Shemekia Copeland Named ’Blues Artist of The Year’
Readers of Living Blues magazine's annual Reader's Poll voted singing sensation Shemekia Copeland as Blues Artist Of The Year (Female). Copeland's latest CD, THE SOUL TRUTH, produced by legendary guitarist Steve Cropper, was widely hailed as the strongest of her career. Born in Harlem, New York in 1979, Shemekia came to her singing career slowly. "I never knew I wanted to sing until I got older," says Copeland. "But my dad knew ever since I was a baby. He just knew I was gonna be a singer." Her father, the late Texas blues guitar legend Johnny Clyde Copeland, recognized his daughter's talent early on. He always encouraged her to sing at home and even brought her on stage to sing at Harlem's famed Cotton Club when she was just eight. At that time Shemekia's embarrassment outweighed her desire to sing. But when she was 15 and her father's health began to slow him down, she received the calling. "It was like a switch went off in my head," recalls Shemekia, "and I wanted to sing. It became a want and a need. I had to do it."
Shemekia's passion for singing, matched with her huge, blast-furnace voice, gives her music the timeless power and heart-pounding urgency of a very few greats who have come before her. The media has compared her to a young Etta James, Koko Taylor, Aretha Franklin and Ruth Brown, but Shemekia - who was raised in the tough, urban streets of Harlem - has her own story to tell. Although schooled in Texas blues by her father, Shemekia's music comes from deep within her soul and from the streets she grew up on, where a daily dose of city sounds - from street performers to gospel singers to blasting radios to bands in local parks - surrounded her.
With all this experience under her belt, 16-year-old Shemekia joined her father on his tours after he was diagnosed with a heart condition. Soon enough Shemekia was opening, and sometimes even stealing, her father's shows. "She grabbed the crowd with her powerful voice, poised and intense," raved Blues Revue at the time. Eventually, though, it became clear to Shemekia who was helping whom. "Dad wanted me to think I was helping him out by opening his shows when he was sick, but really, he was doing it all for me. He would go out and do gigs so I would get known. He went out of his way to get me that exposure," recalls Shemekia.
Shemekia stepped out of her father's shadow in 1998 when Alligator released TURN THE HEAT UP to massive popular and critical acclaim. Rave reviews ran everywhere from Billboard to The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The Chicago Sun-Times, The Boston Globe, Emerge and many others. "Nothing short of uncanny," said The Village Voice. "She roars with a sizzling hot intensity," shouted The Boston Globe. She appeared in the motion picture Three To Tango, and her song I Always Get My Man was featured in another Hollywood film, Broken Hearts Club. She even guested on the television program Early Edition.
With her Dr. John-produced follow-up, TALKING TO STRANGERS, Shemekia again turned up the heat, with far-reaching material treading the ground where blues and soul meet rock and roll. The album debuted in the #1 spot on the Billboard Blues Chart and received critical praise all around the world. The Associated Press declared, "Copeland blazes through TALKING TO STRANGERS with fervor and grace. Her singing can be as thunderous as Etta James and as mellow as Chaka Khan." Vibe agreed, saying, "TALKING TO STRANGERS is a masterful blend of ballsy rockers and cheeky ballads." Features and reviews ran in The Washington Post, Billboard, Essence, Vibe, USA Today, DownBeat, Ebony and many other national and regional publications. She appeared on the Late Show With David Letterman (along with B.B. King), was featured in the Martin Scorsese-produced concert film Lightning In A Bottle, the PBS television series The Blues and even opened a show for the Rolling Stones in Chicago.
Joe Satriani and Steve Vai Announce Benefit Concert
Legendary guitarists Joe Satriani and Steve Vai announce plans for a benefit concert for music industry veteran and friend, Cliff Cultreri. "The Cliff Show" will take place on Saturday, September 30th at the House Of Blues, Hollywood, and will feature performances by both Satriani and Vai, as well as special guests to be announced.
Cliff Cultreri is the A&R executive who "discovered" both Satriani and Vai as well as many other popular recording artists, while working at Relativity Records. Cultreri is currently suffering from a host of Auto-Immune and Connective-Tissue disorders that are attacking his immune system, a one in 100 million occurrence that causes severe pain and physical problems. Satriani and Vai hope to raise funds to help Cultreri and his family's financial needs.
Cultreri is currently VP of A&R at KOCH Records where he has worked with such artists as RZA, B.G., Turk, Ying Yang Twins, Kurupt, Death Row, Big Gipp & Goodie Mob, Master P, and many others. During his years in the industry, Cultreri has served as A&R for a number of top names, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Allan Holdsworth, Billy Sheehan & Talas, Peter Frampton, Megadeth, Corrosion Of Conformity, Exodus, Anthrax, Death, Venom, Slash's Snakepit, Cradle Of Filth, Godflesh, Our Lady Peace, My Bloody Valentine, The Cure, Modern English, Gene Loves Jezebel, Fat Joe, Common, Bone Thugs 'N Harmony, 3-6 Mafia, KRS 1, Beatnuts, C Murder, Soulja Slim, and many others in all genres of music. In addition, he has received 18 Grammy nominations, 13 Gold and 14 Platinum and Multi-Platinum awards for albums on which he was the executive producer, co-producer or A&R. He won Grammys for "Song of the Year" and "Album of the Year" with Bone Thugs 'N Harmony for which he served as A&R.
"Cliff has been a musical force and guiding light in my career and my life for 2 decades. He introduced and championed my music to the music business. He is a dear friend and musical ally and quite the guitar player himself, " said Satriani. "Steve and I wanted to help Cliff and the idea of a show in LA with other members of the guitar community seemed to be the obvious way to celebrate and help him."

Thursday, September 28th, 2006jazz icon Miles Davis to be inducted into Hollywood's RockWalk. Throughout his 50 year career, Miles Davis has embodied everything that is cool. His innovative style of jazz defined the evolution of the genre -- and some argue that jazz stopped evolving when Davis wasn't around to push it forward. His love for music began at the age of 13, when he first picked up the trumpet.
He went on to study at Juilliard, then known as the Institute of Music, before leaving school to begin a full time career as a jazz musician. Making his recording debut in 1947, Davis went on to record many legendary albums including Round About Midnight, The Birth of Cool, Kind of Blue, which sold more than 2 million copies, Bitches Brew, and Tutu. Having received eight GRAMMY Awards in his career, Davis was also the sole jazz artist inducted into the 2006 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. More recently, Concord Records released a 4-disc box set entitled The Miles Davis Quintet: The Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions on May 23 to commemorate his 80th birthday on May 26. The 15th anniversary of his passing on September 28, will be honored with the Sony/Legacy Jazz release of Cool & Collected on September 5, along with a live performance DVD release. A special remix project entitled Evolution of the Groove, featuring Santana and Nas, will be released this fall. A biopic on the life of Davis is also in the works with Golden Globe winning actor Don Cheadle set to portray Miles.
Miles Davis will be posthumously inducted into Hollywood's RockWalk the only sidewalk gallery dedicated to honoring those artists who have made a significant impact and lasting contribution to the growth and evolution Rock 'n' Roll, Blues and R&B. His bronze bust will reside alongside the handprints and signatures of other equally accomplished musicians and innovators such as Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Bonnie Raitt, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, John Lee Hooker, Lou Reed, Sonic Youth, The Cure, X, AC/DC and Van Dyke Parks among numerous others.

"Miles Dewey Davis III – trumpeter, visionary, and eternal modernist – was a force of nature, " wrote Ashley Kahn (author of Kind Of Blue: The Making Of the Miles Davis Masterpiece, Da Capo, 2000) in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame dinner journal on the occasion of Miles' induction. "With an ear that disregarded categories of style, he sought out new musical worlds, and generations followed in his footsteps. While the creative rush and experimental charge that come to most musicians in youth eventually run down, Davis held an exploratory edge for most of his 65 years. It had to be fresh, or forget it."

Columbia/Legacy Jazz releases Miles Davis - Cool & Collected on September 5, featuring 13 career-defining recordings spanning 1956 to 1985. Cool & Collected is the first single CD anthology to zero in on a baker's dozen of the recordings which created the swirling mythos of 'cool' that defines Miles, spanning 1956 to 1984, with a new previously unreleased bonus remix track to close the program. This definitive package of all-classic selections, which will be supported by one of the most aggressive multi-tiered consumer lifestyle marketing campaigns ever launched by Legacy Recordings, will arrive in stores September 5th on Columbia/Legacy Jazz, a division of Sony BMG Music Entertainment.
Underscoring the 'hip' factor associated with Cool & Collected is its fascinating cover design by Bert Stefano of Instituto Europea of Design in Italy. His design won a contest arranged with top design schools in 12 countries around the world. Students from these schools created their artwork based on Legacy's criteria for this Miles Davis album (demographics, marketing concept).
Other schools enlisted for the design competition were: New York's School of Visual Arts; ESDI (Escola Superior de Desenho Industrial) of Rio de Janeiro; Tokyo Gakugei University; Chelsea College of Art & Design in London; Köln International School of Design in Germany; Royal Academy of Arts at the Hague; CEV (European Volunteer Centre) of Barcelona; Instituto Europea of Design in Rome and Milan; and Instituto Europea of Design in Madrid.
If 'cool' is the magnet that has been drawing jazz hipsters together for these past fifty-five-plus years, then nowhere is that synergy better represented than on the brand new remix of 1969's "It's About That Time" heard on Cool & Collected. Newly recorded parts by Carlos Santana (lead guitar), drummer Vince Wilburn, Jr. (Miles' nephew and former band-member), bassist Charley Drayton, Geri Allen on Fender Rhodes piano, Pat Thrall, recording engineer/guitarist/programmer, and African drummers Azize Faye and Ndongo Mbaye are engaged in the remix of the original track (from the In A Silent Way LP sessions) that featured Miles on trumpet, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Joe Zawinul on keyboards, Wayne Shorter on tenor saxophone, bassist Dave Holland, guitarist John McLaughlin, and drummer Tony Williams. The Davis remix was produced by Wilburn, Thrall and Drayton; and was executive produced by Steve Berkowitz and Wilburn.
The remix of 1969's "It's About That Time" is the icing on a collection containing music that ranges from Miles' second year of recordings on Columbia – 1956's "Bye Bye Blackbird" and 'Round Midnight" (both with Miles' so-called "first great quintet" featuring tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, as heard on the 'Round About Midnight LP) all the way through the two cover versions from his final Columbia album, 1985's You're Under Arrest, namely Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" (with John Scofield on guitar) and the Michael Jackson hit "Human Nature" (with John McLaughlin on guitar).
The late 1950s were abundant with Miles Davis recordings that re-established him as the paradigm of cool, long after the Birth Of the Cool sessions (released in 1950) that signaled his graduation from the frenetic bebop movement of the '40s. Cool & Collected lives up to its title by gathering a brilliant quartet of 1958 sides – "Milestones" (the first session in which Coltrane was joined by Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on alto saxophone), "Stella By Starlight" and "Fran-Dance" (from the first session in which pianist Bill Evans joined the quintet), and the Gershwins' "Summertime" (from Porgy And Bess, arranged and conducted by Gil Evans) – topped off by this CD's opening gem, "So What, " from the undisputedly coolest jazz LP ever recorded, Kind Of Blue.
In December 1957, Miles took a side-trip to Paris where he hooked up with old friend and expatriate musician, drummer Kenny Clarke for sessions that yielded the French LP movie soundtrack on Fontana for Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Elevator To The Gallows). The third track on the album, "Générique, " marks an extremely rare and historic appearance of a recording from that LP on a Columbia anthology.
The 1960s are represented by two crucial recordings: 1963's "Seven Steps To Heaven" was the title tune from the first LP to spring forth from Miles' new quintet of Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams, and saxophonist George Coleman; a year and a half later, 1965's "E.S.P." was the title tune from the first LP (and first record date) by the fully-formed "second great quintet" – Hancock, Carter, Williams, and Wayne Shorter. Both of these tracks hold primal positions in the annals of cool.
When Miles Davis became the first (and only) modern jazz figure ever to be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame this year, it demanded reflection upon his impact on popular culture in general – not just the worlds of jazz and rock that he forever welded together at the hip in the late 1960s. Decades later, in this landmark year of 2006 – in which Miles would have turned 80 years old on May 26th, and in which the 15th anniversary of his death is commemorated on September 25th – his mystique looms as large as ever on the landscape of 'cool.' The world of hip belongs to Miles, to paraphrase a line from Ol' Blues Eyes' handbook, and we are all just guests.
The marketing campaign devised for Cool & Collected will take full advantage of the celebrations that have already begun surrounding Miles' 80th birthday. Targeting a very broad market on a lifestyle basis, this campaign seeks to introduce the legacy of Miles to a new generation of music listeners. Legacy will faithfully represent Miles as a fountainhead of inspiration, innovation, and style, in other words: Cool.
A combination of marketing tools will include a 30-second TV Commercial, and written testimonials from Brian Wilson, Joni Mitchell, Trey Anastasio of Phish, Herb Alpert, Sting, Chris Botti, and more.
A full complement of media events – including induction onto Hollywood's RockWalk (sponsored by Guitar Center Music Foundation) and a football half-time tribute to Miles by the legendary USC Marching band on November 11th – are also scheduled. Various contests and sweepstakes, along with a growing list of third party corporate sponsorships, grassroots marketing efforts, and a strong online presence is also being coordinated.

Robert Cray Band: First Live Album In 30+-year Career
The Robert Cray Band is famous for touring more than six months out of every year. Yet in their 30+-year career, there has never been a live album — until the imminent release of The Robert Cray Band: Live From Across The Pond, that is. The two-CD live set was recorded over the course of seven shows in May 2006 at London's Royal Albert Hall while Cray was on tour with Eric Clapton. Still on the road together in Europe (and the only rockers to play Moscow's Red Square in 2006), the Cray Band will tour with Clapton in the U.S. once again on the heels of the live album's September 12 release. The U.S. Clapton dates commence on September 16 in St. Paul, and continue through October 23 in Miami. A second leg of American dates to be announced shortly will cover the Western states in February 2006. Cray will also tour with Buddy Guy and as a headliner during the August and early September.
The album marks the inaugural release for Cray's new independent label, Nozzle Records, which will be distributed by Vanguard Records. It was mixed by Grammy Award winner Don Smith (Rolling Stones, Ry Cooder, Miles Davis.)
The Robert Cray Band: Live From Across The Pond contains live versions of Cray classics alongside newly recorded gems like "Poor Johnny, " "I'm Walkin', " and his song about a young soldier watching the horror unfold in Iraq, "Twenty."
The album spotlights Cray's stellar guitar playing along with the expertise of his long-time band: Jim Pugh, keyboards; bassist Karl Sevareid; and drummer Kevin Hayes. Together they have played more than 1, 000 dates.
"It's like we know how to play with one another, we support one another on solos, and we work hard to make the shows sound good, " Cray explains. "We can make a song become something different from what it was the night before. It gives us the opportunity to stretch something out and then come back together. And those things make playing a lot of fun."
Commenting on his first live album in 30 years, Cray added: "Fans have asked us for a live record for a long time. Many attempts have been made, but the seven shows at Royal Albert made it possible to do it right."
