I wished to remain anonymous in a world of Philadelphians. I ticked myself off and put myself in my place, a two-bedroomed brownstone of ill repute. I was convinced I'd been here before. Call it what you will, I call it daft. Had I walked these same dusty springfields before? Or was I just a victim of circumnavigation? Yea, tho' I walk thru Rudy Valle, I will fear no Evel Knievel.
Еще немного о Goodbye - на прощание Пол подарил Мэри жемчужину:
“Goodbye” was written by Paul and credited to Lennon-McCartney. On March 1-2, 1969, Paul accompanied Mary at London’s Morgan Studios for the recording session. Mary sang and played acoustic guitar, changing a few words in Paul’s final verse (from “sound of lonely drums” to “song of lonely love”). She also raised the key from ‘C’ to ‘E’ to better fit her vocal range. Paul added an acoustic guitar intro, bass, and slapped his lap as a percussion technique learned from Buddy Holly). He also put some drums on the record. Additional strings, horns and backing vocals were also overdubbed in. Mary’s recording of “Goodbye” is most easily found on the compilation CD Come And Get It – The Best Of Apple Records (Amazon link provided below).
For this week’s BROW I am featuring Paul’s original demo of the song recorded in December 1968. It was this recording that Paul gave to Mary so that she could learn the song and prepare her own rendition of it. Paul is playing all instruments in the demo.
Extra info: “Goodbye”, like it’s predecessor, would have also been a #1 single in the U.K. but was held out of the top spot for two weeks by another of Paul McCartney’s songs – The Beatles recording of “Get Back,” which held firm to the #1 spot during the entire month of May 1969. In the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, “Goodbye” peaked at #13.
Насколько понимаю, о своей демо-версии Пол не менее высокого мнения, чем о версии Мэри :)
I did a demo for `Come And Get It' for Badfinger which took about 20 minutes, it was before a Beatles session. Phil McDonald was there and I got in – I always used to get in early because I lived just around the corner – and all the equipment was set up from the day before so I ran in and said "Just do this, Phil, go on, it'll only take 20 minutes" and I threw it away, I mean it's really nice. I did two demos that I was very pleased with. That one and ` Goodbye', for Mary Hopkin, they were nice demos.
Интересно, сколько песен Битлз появилось таким образом, когда Пол в одиночку "делал группу", а остальным предлагалось только выучить свои уже готовые партии.
Sir Paul McCartney and Sir George Martin sign and discuss the 500 specially framed lithographs of the original 1965 score of the world's most loved song - Yesterday.
martin and macca at auction George Martin and Paul McCartney have faithfully reproduced the score that they used for the Yesterday recordings complete with mistakes, coffee stains and certificate of authentication.
The aim of the auction, organised by Yahoo!, is to raise much needed funds for The Sir George Martin Music Foundation to aid the island of Montserrat, devastated in June 1997 when the Soufriere Hills Volcano erupted killing 19 people. June 14 has been chosen for the launch as on this day, 36 years ago, the original recording was made of Yesterday at Abbey Road studios: the string quartet, for whom the score was written, was added three days later.
