Walter Kolosky's new book, Power, Passion and Beauty: The Story of the Legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra, was published by Abstract Logix Books and available May 22.
Power, Passion and Beauty is the first full-length book about the incredible yet elusive MO to include collaborations with the five original members of the legendary jazz-rock fusion group-guitarist and band leader John McLaughlin, drummer Billy Cobham, bass player Rick Laird, pianist Jan Hammer, and violinist Jerry Goodman.

With over 300 pages including rare, never-before-seen images, and exclusive comments from such luminaries as musicians Jeff Beck, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, producer Sir George Martin, legendary sound engineer Ken Scott, contemporary art giant Peter Max and many others, Power, Passion and Beauty captures the richness and diversity of the original MO's short-lived career that began in 1971 and focuses in on the influence the music has had ever since.

As befits an attempt to historicize one of the world's loudest and yet most elusive bands, the book also has a companion interactive Web site, which will include additional rare images, musical analysis, special gig list and album cover art sections, a shop for exclusive Mahavishnu Orchestra products and a discussion forum.

The Mahavishu Orchestra was part Jimi Hendrix, part Miles Davis, and part of all that came before and all that would come after. Its genre-busting innovation stemmed from the raw talent of its members which, combined together, produced a never-before-heard and never-since-replicated hybrid sound. Somehow, despite all the mainstream odds and the fact the band featured no vocals, the MO managed to make a large dent in the pop music world of the time. Today, over thirty years since its demise, its sound is at the core of much of the jamband scene and serves as a foundation for a burgeoning fusion music renaissance.

Walter Kolosky, who Allaboutjazz.com called "an extremely versatile writer who provides a good deal of serious information, infused with a healthy dose of humor" for his book Girls Don't Like Real Jazz (Abstract Logix, 2004), employs sound, eclecticism, history, memory and fandom to create a truly memorable slice of musical history. Flipping through the pages of Power, Passion and Beauty will take the reader on a journey through an era of composing and performing that has left its mark on multiple musical genres ranging from classical, hip-hop and progressive rock, to Indian, heavy and death-metal, and even some country tunes. Power, Passion and Beauty will take you back to the moment where it all began and where it is still continuing.

Trio Beyond | ECM Records

This energetic November 2004 London concert was billed as “Lifetime and Beyond: Celebrating Tony Williams.” The trio's instrumentation—organ, electric guitar, drums—mirrors the late drummer’s seminal jazz-rock Lifetime outfit, but its name emphasizes what lies beyond.

Lifetime is not forgotten in the process, of course. Each of two long sets ends with a number from the trio’s explosive 1969 debut, and these new readings still echo some of the excitement and incomprehensibility that the music caused more than thirty years ago. Unlike most of the other jazz-rock fusion of the era, Tony Williams’ conception of rock embraced not only Sly Stone, James Brown and Jimi Hendrix, but also, on the aural evidence, the likes of Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes.

Larry Goldings, John Scofield and Jack DeJohnette play the uncompromising rock ’n’ roll of the ”Emergency” theme with great vigor, but quickly segue into a less frenetic (and sublime) post-bop vibe. Indeed, the record’s best moments draw more deeply upon music associated with Williams’ membership in Miles Davis’ classic mid-’60s quintet, before he left to form Lifetime: “Seven Steps to Heaven,” “Pee Wee” and a beautiful “I Fall In Love Too Easily” with a long blues coda. When Trio Beyond goes “beyond” Lifetime, they mean before Lifetime.

DeJohnette’s idiosyncratic gifts are especially suited to this setting. In the original trio, Larry Young and John McLaughlin liberated the organ/guitar aesthetic from the funky but narrow supremacy of the Lonnie Liston Smith/George Benson sound; for them, as for Goldings and Scofield, the organ does not always double for the missing bass. Thus DeJohnette thus finds plenty of space to thrash about in his preferred booming bottom range.

Likewise, the assertive loudness of the electric instrumentation stands up better to the drummer’s aggressive proclivities (though after all those years playing in Keith Jarrett’s Standards Trio, DeJohnette is much more at ease in the gentler passages, as on “Big Nick”). As a result, DeJohnette is the key ingredient in a very successful combination that might be called, improbable as it sounds, stadium chamber jazz.

Scofield is fluent, flexible, and thoroughly at home with the particular timbres of the electric instrument. He frequently opts for a cool, R&B-inflected understatement, an efficient contrast to the florid, almost hyperactive vocabulary of the trio’s other members. Listen in particular to his playing on the power ballad “As One” and the funky, trio-composed title track, whose short melodic line is purloined from Miles Davis’s “Spanish Key.” Goldings is the least mature voice in the the trio, but his proficiency, his inventiveness, and more importantly (given the company he’s keeping), his stamina never waver.

Not rigidly constrained to a literal rendering of Williams’ music, the members of Trio Beyond instead sample the late drummer’s musical universe, bringing their own perspectives into the mix. Saudades is a fitting tribute to Williams’ considerable legacy, but it is also a part of that legacy.

Ну, кому как. Мне пока нравится все что слышу, мягко говоря, хоть я и сторонник более ритмичной музыки. Так что не зря завидуете :-). Кайфффф.
А Пасториус - бассист, от него я как раз чего-то более ритмично-динамичного ожидаю. О как. Я сам себе завидую :-)

Последние 3 месяца сильно запал на сабж. Очень сильно. Что же это такое, мне начинают нравиться англиские гитаристы! Неужто Хендрикса разлюблю?
Еще, хотел спросить - у Кобхэма на спектруме в качестве гитариста указан некто Bolin. Это тот самый, дип перпловский?
