В одной из тем форума я как-то писал, что в начале 70-х у меня был альбом очень интересной психоделической группы AORTA. Я давно искал любые материалы о них и вот, что мне удалось собрать...
Я был бы очень признателен тому, кто перевел бы их на русский язык, а я в свою очередь обещаю сделать из них одну общую статью и разместить ее на сайте в теме "Неизвестные 60-е, группа Aorta". Заранее БОЛЬШОЕ СПАСИБО! Итак...

AORTA

During the mid-'60s, the members of Aorta — originally hailing from Rockford, IL — had previously been in a group called the Exceptions. Early members of this group included Kal David (later of Illinois Speed Press and H.P. Lovecraft), Marty Grebb (the Buckinghams), and Peter Cetera (Chicago). The Exceptions were a soulful, if unremarkable, Top 40s cover group who were nevertheless acclaimed for their "exceptional" musicianship. They were one of the more popular acts on the greater Chicago local scene, and released a handful of singles on numerous Midwest labels — Tollie, Cameo, Quill — and for L.A.-based Capitol. For the last of these releases, the band dropped the "s" from their name and began calling themselves the Exception (a compilation for the Collectables label, The Quill Records Story, collects two of their singles). They also recorded an EP called "A Rock & Roll Mass for the Flair label; it featured six different rock songs with words taken from various religious prayers. As each member of the group — with the exception of bassist Peter Cetera — already had an eye toward expanding their original material to include a more "psychedelic" sound, they soon reconfigured themselves as Aorta, and, in late 1968, recorded a single for Atlantic. Eventually, producer Bill Traut (American Breed) approached them on behalf of Dunwich Productions, Inc., and — with Bobby Jones taking over on bass after Cetera's departure — they accepted his offer to record their debut album for Columbia in 1969. They recorded two albums under the name Aorta. The first of these, the self-titled Aorta, is today highly acclaimed as a lite-psych album of some minor renown, and though it managed to chart on Billboard's album charts, it failed to do what was expected. A revised version of the group — still led by Jim Donlinger and now featuring Michael Been on bass/guitar/vocals — recorded the drastically different second album, Aorta 2, for the Happy Tiger label. Jim Donlinger — who along with his brother and Jim Nyeholt (during a brief period between the two albums), had all played in the Rotary Connection — later left Aorta to join Lovecraft (formerly H.P. Lovecraft, who were signed to Reprise at the time), while Billy Herman would eventually move on to join New Colony Six. Michael Been later played with Moby Grape members Jerry Millerand Bob Mosley in Fine Wine, and ultimately achieved his biggest success with the Call. Been is also the father of Robert Turner of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. The original Aorta later re-formed (joining another great Chicago-area group, the Cryan' Shames) to do promo spots for the U.S. Armed Forces on a very rare promotional LP. They've appeared on numerous compilations over the years. Aorta was re-issued on CD in 1996.

ALBUM "Aorta" (1969)

This is the debut album by a relatively obscure Chicago-based group whose membership can be linked to various other Chicago-area groups who have wider name recognition, including the Rotary Connection, Lovecraft (formerly H.P. Lovecraft), and New Colony Six. After first recording a single for Atlantic Records in 1968, the group — previously a lounge act called the Exceptions — signed with Columbia Records, the label who issued this eponymous debut, in 1969, during the same month that debut albums by three other Chicago-area acts were issued by Columbia: Illinois Speed Press, the Flock, and Chicago Transit Authority (featuring Peter Cetera). Columbia marketed each of these albums together as a part of a so-called "Chicago Sound," and all four entered the Billboard Top 200. Despite using numerous sound library effects (crying babies, ringing telephones, etc.) and the fact that songs on each side of the album run together with no break in between, Aorta probably shouldn't be viewed as a "psychedelic" album. Instead, a more accurate description would emphasize the group's jazzier art rock side, not to mention their abundant use of dramatic pseudo-soul vocals and histrionic guitar/organ arrangements. In truth, Aorta sound more like a few other keyboard-heavy rock acts of their day, especially Three Dog Night and Argent. The only single taken from the LP was "Strange" (an edited version of the track issued earlier by Atlantic) b/w the wonderfully titled "Ode to Missy Mxyzosptlk." Aorta's album ended up peaking at around number 168 and remained on Billboard's charts for a respectable six weeks. Aorta was reissued on CD in 1996.

These two albums of acid psychedelia are highly rated by some. Their first album is consistently good throughout and is certainly recommended. A wide range of material is held together by tight playing and some fine guitar/organ interplay.
Unfortunately, the second album pales by comparison and is largely uninspired with no real highlights.
The band came from Chicago and during the mid sixties were a popular Top 40's lounge group, going by the name of The Exceptions. After a couple of years of regurgitating the latest hits, they were getting bored and were looking for room to explore their musical talents, when producer Bill Traut (of Dunwich Records) approached them with an offer to record an album of original material. All of the group with the exception of Pete Cetera lept at the chance, and with the bass slot now filled by Bobby Jones, they renamed themselves as Aorta.
Curiously their first album was released the same month as three other Chicago acts signed to Columbia Illinois Speed Press, The Flock, and Chicago (who incidentally included Pete Cetera). This was a marketing ploy to push a "Chicago" scene and all four albums entered the Billboard Top 200, with Aorta's peaking at around 168 and remaining in the chart for a respectable six weeks.
Incidentally, the basic tracks and vocal tracks for the first album were recorded at Great Lakes Recording studio in Sparta, Michigan, with one track Sprinkle Road To Cork Street referring to two roads in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Been and the Donlinger brothers had all formerly played in The Rotary Connection, another Chicago act, and Been and Jim Dolinger were later in Lovecraft. Nyeholt also played with The Rotary Connection during a brief period between the two albums, and Billy Herman went on to play for New Colony Six.
Michael Been later played with Moby Grape members Jerry Miller / Bob Mosley in Fine Wine, and is still active on the music scene.
The compilation Psychedelic Dream features three tracks from their first album:- What's In My Mind's Eye, a beautiful piece of orchestrated pop-psych; Sleep Tight, a rather disjointed song which wasn't one of their finest moments but ended with some pleasant keyboards and Catalyptic, a cover of a Colours song, which is another keyboard dominated number with some occasionally scintillating guitar. The latter track has often puzzled collectors, as it fits neatly into the 'concept' of Aorta, but is pre-dated by the Colours version. In fact, Bill Traut had received a demo of the track, and suggested it to Aorta for their album, but other than that there's no direct link between the groups.
Anyone interested in digging into Aorta's roots may be interested in the Collectables CD The Quill Records Story: The Best of Chicago Garage Bands, which includes two Exceptions singles: As Far As I Can See and Business As Usual.
Also recommended is the 45 version of Strange, which includes different guitar and can be found on U-Spaces: Psychedelic Archaeology Vol. 1 (CDR)

Last week, at the documentary gala screening of Apple Films Inc. "The Concert for Bangladesh Revisited with George Harrison and Friends" to celebrate the launch of the DVD and CD, Olivia Harrison announced The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF.

The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF is a joint undertaking between the Harrison family and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to support UNICEF programs that provide lifesaving assistance to children caught in humanitarian emergencies.

In the tradition established by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar, The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF will continue to support UNICEF programs in Bangladesh while expanding its influence to include other countries in crisis where children are at risk. In emergencies, UNICEF's priority is to ensure the immediate care and protection for the most disadvantaged children: victims of war, disasters, extreme poverty, all forms of violence and exploitation.

As with Bangladesh in the 1970s, many of these emergencies are still virtually ignored by the media and critically underfunded. Earlier this year, UNICEF appealed for more than $750 million to help millions of children struggling to survive conflicts and other emergencies in countries around the world such as the continuing conflict in Democratic Republic of Congo, which has taken the lives of over 3 million people in just five years, and the crisis in northern Uganda, which is one of the worst emergencies facing children anywhere.

During emergencies, children are especially vulnerable to disease, malnutrition and violence. Nearly half of the 3.6 million people killed in conflict during the 1990s (45 per cent) were children. Millions more children were seriously injured or permanently disabled, or endured sexual violence, trauma, hunger and disease. Around 20 million children were forced from their homes and communities by conflict.

In all emergencies, UNICEF focuses firstly on the survival of the children, which means providing health care, water and sanitation and adequate nutrition. UNICEF is also there to bring immediate protection to children who have been abandoned or separated from their families, enrolled in army or rebel groups or otherwise exploited and abused. UNICEF also helps children recover from the psychological distress associated with emergencies, a key component of which is getting children back to school as soon as possible. In schools, children are also in easier reach of health care, food, water and sanitation.

The international space station crew, 220 miles above Earth, will take a special live musical wakeup call from Paul McCartney November 12th in a first-ever concert linkup. The broadcast is slated to include “English Tea,” from his latest critically hailed album Chaos And Creation In The Backyard, as well as the Beatles classic “Good Day Sunshine.”

The call will emanate from McCartney’s "US" Tour performance from Anaheim, California’s Arrowhead Pond. Aboard the house-sized orbiting station, NASA Astronaut Bill McArthur and Russian Cosmonaut Valery Tokarev are in the midst of a six-month flight. McCartney is nearing the end of his 11-week "US" concert tour done in support of his latest critically acclaimed album, “Chaos And Creation In The Backyard.”

During his tour, McCartney has paid tribute to the crew of the Space Shuttle Discovery, a mission that took place earlier this year. On Aug. 9, the crew of Discovery received a good weather forecast for a second landing attempt, during which the Beatles' classic "Good Day Sunshine" was played as a wakeup call by Mission Control.

"I was extremely proud to find out that one of my songs was played for the crew of Discovery this summer," McCartney said. "In our concert we hope to repay the favor.”

The call to the station will mark the first time a live concert has been linked to a U.S. spacecraft.

The call will take place at 12:55 a.m. EST Nov. 13 (9:55 p.m. PST Nov. 12), as the concert is nearing its end and McArthur and Tokarev are awakening for their 44th day in space. The call will be broadcast live on NASA Television, with audio from both the concert and the station and video expected of McArthur and Tokarev.

McArthur and Tokarev are the 12th crew of the station, which has had a continuous human presence aboard for more than five years. The station has an internal volume larger than an average three-bedroom house and includes the most sophisticated space laboratory ever flown.

This morning on Los Angles radio station 97.1 KLSX-FM 's Breakfast w/ the Beatles hosted by Chris Carter, Sir Paul McCartney surprisingly phoned in to answer and win the morning's quiz question, ( Q> Who took the cover of Paul on his latest album Chaos & Creation in the Back yard).

The answer was Paul's brother Mike who took the shot of his Beatle brother in their backyard in 1962.

Paul seemed happy to be today's winner as the prize was Ringo's latest CD, "just what I always wanted" said Paul. Mr. McCartney then proceed to give an 18 minute exclusive interview discussing at length all things "Macca" including his current album & tour, singing to our Astronauts in space (last night), and even a nice little Bob Dylan impersonation while talking about the Beatles "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away".

This was Paul's second time on Breakfast w/ the Beatles (his first time on the show was featured in his film Back in the US) and yes his second time as a quiz winner as well. Next week Dick Cavett will join Chris to talk about his new DVD set the John & Yoko Collection.

Avril Lavigne, Black Eyed Peas, Sum 41, the Deftones and Duran Duran are among the artists recording John Lennon songs to raise funds for human rights organization Amnesty International. The recordings, which will be released as downloads through amnesty.org, will be part of Amnesty's new youth-oriented music campaign that begins in January.

Three years ago, Yoko Ono donated the rights to her late husband's solo tracks to Amnesty for use in its Imagine campaign, which asked children around the world to sing the 1971 peace anthem. (December 8th is the twenty-fifth anniversary of Lennon's death.)

For the new campaign, Lavigne recorded "Imagine," with accompaniment by pianist Chantal Kreviazuk and production by Butch Walker. Lavigne stayed faithful to the original. "I did a mellow version," she says.

On the other side of the spectrum, Warped Tour vets Billy Talent turned up the volume on "Cold Turkey," which they recorded at Bryan Adams' Warehouse Studios in Vancouver. "They asked us what song we wanted to do, and that was the first one that came to my mind," says guitarist Ian D'Sa. "It's an awesome song. But we sped it up a bit because it's kind of slow."

Black Eyed Peas are recording "Power to the People" for the project, while singer/rapper K-Os tackled "Jealous Guy." According to an Amnesty spokeswoman in Ireland, more details will be announced in the coming weeks.
