Fender Custom Shop Recreates the 1955 Strat

2005 marks the 50th anniversary of one of the finest guitars ever made--the Stratocaster.

To celebrate the occoasion, the Fender Custom Shop has recreated the 1955 version of the Strat in a limited edition run, exactly fifty years on from the original.

Vintage features have been retained, such as:

*A tone-colour sunbust finish over a Comfort Contoured Premium Ash Body
*Soft "V"-shaped neck
*1-Ply Parchment (8 Hole) pickguard
*Maple fingerboard with a 9.5Б─² (241 mm) Radius
*Chrome-plated "ashtray" bridge cover
*Bone nut

The Eric Clapton Stratocaster was the first "signature model" guitar ever released by Fender, in 1988.

In 1981, Fender had informally discussed the idea of a signature Telecaster with James Burton; however, this would not come to be until 1990. Jeff Beck had also been offered a signature edition Stratocaster, but he rejected the idea at the time.

Eric Clapton, though he had played Fenders in his brief career with The Yardbirds, would attain "guitar god" status while playing models such as the Gibson Les Paul and SG with supergroup Cream. However, in 1970, for his landmark Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, Clapton switched to a vintage sunburst Stratocaster nicknamed "Brownie". He later fused the best parts of three vintage Strats to create his favorite guitar, "Blackie", which he played for many years. (Both guitars would later sell for record prices at auction.) When Blackie finally wore out, Clapton and the Fender Custom Shop began to work on a signature edition.

Features
Clapton asked Fender for a V-shaped neck similar to his Martin acoustic and what he called a "compressed" sound from the pickups. The final product used three of Fender's new low-noise pickups, the Lace Sensors. Active electronics helped deliver the tone Clapton desired. Also, the guitar had an interesting feature; a tremolo arm-style bridge blocked off to tremolo arms. This came about as Clapton shunned the tone of hardtail Stratocasters but never used the tremolo arm.

In 2001, reflecting the changes Clapton had made to his own guitar, the Lace Sensors were replaced with Vintage Noiseless pickups.

Diamond Anniversary concert celebration to feature star-studded lineup


Fender plans a very special Diamond Anniversary celebration right in its own Phoenix-area backyard this spring, as it welcomes a stellar lineup of artists and presents an impressive array of Fender exhibits for what promises to be a pair of unforgettable outdoor concerts.

To celebrate 60 legendary years of musical innovation, Fender has all but taken over the entertainment roster for the fourth annual Tempe Music Festival, March 31-April 1 at Tempe Beach Park in sunny Arizona. The Friday night show will feature the way-beyond-legendary Jeff Beck in his first U.S. performance in years, topping a bill that also includes Texas guitar wizard Eric Johnson, savage guitar alien Greg Koch and eclectic acoustic magician Willy Porter. At Saturday’s show, the blueswailing John Mayer Trio will undoubtedly turn in a set hotter than Phoenix asphalt in July, plus performances by Train and Vertical Horizon.

Visitors at the two-day festival will be met with a concentrated blast of full-on Fender mojo that will leave players breathless and those who don’t wanting to learn.

The immense 60th Anniversary Village features the Fender/Jeep® SPIRIT OF ROCK-N-ROLL® interactive exhibit, which will be Fender’s largest-ever display and will include a barrage of amplifiers and Custom Shop Master Builder stations at which the public can watch Fender’s renowned Corona, Calif.-based craftsmen hand-build instruments, while legendary “pickup artists” Abigail Ybarra and Seymour Duncan hand-wind pickups side by side nearby! An equally immense Fender store will offer a wealth of company clothing, collectibles and other merchandise, and the don’t-miss GuitarMania® collection of hand-painted 10-foot-tall fiberglass Stratocaster® guitars will be on prominent display.

The entire weekend will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see some legendary artists and craftsmen, hear some fantastic music, bask in the radiant glow of all things Fender (to say nothing of the springtime Arizona sun), and participate in the 60-year Diamond Anniversary of a beloved American icon: Fender.
