Pink Floyd's song "Hey You" is featured prominently in Noah Baumbach's "The Squid and the Whale," so a perfect excuse to invite former Pink Floyd bandmember Roger Waters (left) to the party for the film, held Monday night at the American Museum of Natural History. Many party attendees were hoping to sneak a chat with the music legend, and some even sat down for some pretty lengthy chats with Waters, who seemed very casual about the whole thing. At one point, Samuel Goldwyn Films head, Samuel Goldwyn, Jr. (middle) happened by along with the company's acquisitions exec, Peter Goldwyn, so we orchestrated this "impromptu" photo.

4 minute or so clip w/ a question or two about the opera and some
discussion of the possibility of another Floyd event/tour. Interesting
clip, not earth-shattering (though I was encouraged by his demeanor and
content of the Floyd answers).

Roger Waters Opera With Bryn Terfel Released on CD

Ca Ira, a new opera by rock star Roger Waters, was released on CD by Sony BMG today.

The recording features baritone Bryn Terfel, tenor Paul Groves, and other singers from the opera world.

Ca Ira is set during early years of the French revolution; characters include Marie Antoinette, Louis XVI, and Marie Marianne— "the Voice of Liberty, Reason, and the Republic." It uses a circus as "a central theatrical framing device and metaphor," according to a statement.

The libretto was first written, in French, by songwriter Etienne Roda-Gil and his wife Nadine to mark the bicentennial of the revolution in 1989. Waters began work on a score at the time, but stopped when Nadine Roda-Gil died of leukemia. In 1997, he took up the project again and completed an English translation.

"Although it's rooted in the history of the revolution, its philosophical slant is, I suppose, contemporary as well," Waters said in a statement. "It's more than just a history of the French Revolution, it's a piece about the human potential for change."

On the recording, Terfel plays the parts of Louis XVI, the Ringmaster, and the Troublemaker; soprano Ying Huang is Marie Antoinette and Marie Marianne. Groves is a Revolutionary Priest and a Military Officer; Nigerian pop singer Ismael Lo plays a Revolutionary Slave.

The opera will get its live premiere in at the Santa Cecilia Auditorium in Rome on November 17, with Waters conducting the Rome Symphony.

Waters was a founder of the band Pink Floyd, with which he helped create the "rock opera" The Wall, among other bestselling albums.

Roger Waters has long been known for his musical ambition. The bassist and

leader of Pink Floyd made that band famous in the 1970s and 1980s with
concept-heavy albums as well as a certain self-aggrandizing
image--attributes he maintained in his solo career. No wonder, then, to see

that he's written what he calls as an opera. But don't be fooled: Waters's

work has little to do with contemporary operas by the likes of John Adams
or John Corigliano--even if the latter's 1991 The Ghosts of Versailles is
set in Marie-Antoinette's Versailles, just as Waters's Зa Ira takes place
during the French queen's last years, as the French Revolution unfurls.
Based on a clunky libretto by Etienne and Nadine Roda-Gil, the show could
have been a successful musical theater-­opera hybrid in the vein of Sweeney

Todd but it falls closer to Andrew Lloyd Webber's historical pageants,
without their recognizable melodies. Thankfully the cast holds the material

aloft, especially Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel (no stranger to the world of
musical theater, as shown on albums such as his tribute to Rodgers &
Hammerstein) and Chinese soprano Ying Huang. Note that this version comes
as a double SACD set that includes a making-of DVD and a 60-page booklet.

Роджер Уотерс – один из основателей легендарной группы «Пинк Флойд» - заканчивает работу над классической оперой. Тема французской революции увлекла музыканта еще 15 лет назад, когда он впервые взял в руки либретто Этьена Рода-Жиля. Однако по разным причинам дописать эпохальное произведение удалось лишь недавно. Премьера уже намечена на 17 ноября. Пройдет она в Риме, дирижировать увертюрой будет сам Уотерс. Сейчас же - в самом разгаре репетиции.

Уотерс с трепетом ждет, что скажут музыкальные корифеи по поводу его сочинения. У композитора, по его собственным словам, ощущение, что его голова лежит на плахе.

Выход календаря на 2006 год отложен

Выход официального календаря Pink Floyd на 2006-й год откладывается на 3-4 недели в связи с тем, что музыканты решили включить туда несколько снимков с выступления на Live 8. Дизайн нового календаря посвящен альбому “Dark Side Of The Moon” и выполнен Джорджем Харди (George Hardie), коллегой Сторма Торгерсона (Storm Thorgerson).

Календарь на 2005-й год был посвящен 30-летию альбома “Wish You Were Here”.

Оперу Уотерса покажут в Риме дважды

Уже давно известно, что долгожданная премьера оперы Роджера Уотерса состоится в Риме, 17-го ноября. Но теперь принято решение исполнить ее дважды. Второй раз “Ça Ira” будет представлена публике 18-го ноября. В Интернете можно заказать билеты и на 17-е, и на 18-е ноября.

Продан редчайший сингл Pink Floyd

27 сентября на интернет-аукционе eBay был продан редчайший экземпляр пластинки Pink Floyd. Это семидюймовый сингл "See Emily Play" японского производства, изготовленный на красном виниле. Цена его составила $4,549. (Такие же пластинки на обычном, чёрном виниле стоят порядка $1,000.)

Долгие годы велись споры о том, существует ли вообще подобное издание. Считается, что было отпечатано всего четыре красных сингла. Возможно, это был некий неосуществлённый промо-проект Odeon Records.

NEW OFFICIAL ROGER WATERS PORTRAITS
Roger Waters is hard at work at present, promoting his new work, Ca Ira. To coincide with this, he has had some new, official, portraits created, and we are pleased to be able to unveil them to you exclusively. This is with thanks to Jimmy Ienner, Jr., who took the pictures.

Jimmy has worked closely with Roger for some time now, and last year created a fascinating video interview with him. He recently produced an EPK (Electronic Press Kit) for Ca Ira, which was shown at the New York launch of the opera in July, to great acclaim from the BD reporters who were there.
