Opening Doors

Wild Child, the Jim Morrison and the Doors tribute band, appropriately performed "Break On Through" to start the night, and wrapped up the "The End" at Don Quixote's last Friday night. What happened throughout the evening was pure magic.

Lead singer Dave Brock totally pulls off the Morrison persona and sound. The musicianship is also impeccable, with the band's equipment the same as what the guys in The Doors used back in the day, so the sound is very authentic.

If you're a fan of The Doors' music, I highly recommend seeing this band should they come around again.

Meanwhile, this Saturday at Don Quixote's features a concert with Aja Vu, a Steely Dan tribute band I've heard is also very good.

And then The Attic on Pacific Avenue in downtown Santa Cruz is taking The Doors thing a step further by presenting Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist from The Doors, in a concert Saturday, also featuring slide guitarist Roy Rogers.

Manzarek and family uprooted from L.A. and moved to northern Napa Valley some years back and no doubt he has begun to make connections to the local music scene; thus the Rogers collaboration.

The music is not about The Doors. "It will be an evening of piano and guitar improvisations, based on themes that we have developed and certain pieces of music. There will be some blues, some meditative music and, even an Erik Satie composition," says Manzarek.

The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. and dinner is available at the show. Tickets are $30 advance, $35 the day of show. Also available at www.Ticketweb.com.

The Santa Cruz Blues Festival is one of the best Central California music festivals for several reasons.

It's not too big and it's in a beautiful park setting. It's very relaxing because once you're set in your spot, there's no confusion or consternation over what music you want to hear. It's all right in front of you.

The weather was absolutely stellar, creating that basking-in-the-warmth feeling we've been waiting for after the wet winter.

Saturday's showcase of familiar regional blues artists had many great performances.

And when it came time for B.B. King, everyone held tight and they were rewarded with a remarkable show by the king of blues.

The heartwarming moment of the festival came after King finished his set. The long, white limousine pulled up to the stairway leading out from backstage, and as King made his way up the steps, those in the audience who gathered nearby and people backstage gave him a rousing send off, with shouts of "we love you B.B." as plentiful as good vibes.

A young boy carried his red electric guitar to the stairway and asked for an autograph. When King obliged, the look on the boy's face was priceless.

Sunday's moment came during Los Lobos' set when an all-star jam broke out with John Hiatt, Dave Alvin, and several other supporting musicians joining the East L.A. group for a couple songs.

All weekend, good ol' Wavy Gravy, the court jester of the '60s and an icon for his activist antics and good deeds, held court backstage and from time to time, came out front to blow bubbles, smile and raise a little you-know-what.

Thanks to Bill, Phil, Michael, David, KPIG and all the rest of the crew and volunteers for a great weekend!

The White Album Ensemble joins the Santa Cruz County Symphony for "All You Need Is Love" Saturday at 8 p.m.

If you're a big fan of the Beatles repertory group, then this is just one more way to hear the beauty of the iconic rock group's best songs and at the same time supporting the Symphony's free youth concerts.

Cabaret table seating may still be available on the Civic Auditorium floor (462-0553, ext.10), while raised seating around the perimeter is plentiful (420-5260).

Pre-concert festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. in front of the Civic. An invitation stands to dress in your finest '60s attire.

One of the most visited graves in the world, for example, is that of The Doors' front-man Jim Morrison, so ad space on his tombstone could fetch a very high price. DENSMORE PLANS 'QUIET' CELEBRATION FOR DOORS ANNIVERSARY

THE DOORS drummer JOHN DENSMORE is being very careful about signing on for projects to mark the 40th anniversary of the rock supergroup's first album in 2007 - because he doesn't want to tarnish their legacy.
The thoughtful star, who now fronts jazz group TRIBALJAZZ, insists he plans to celebrate the anniversary "quietly" and will think very carefully about plans to reunite with bandmates ROBBY KRIEGER and RAY MANZAREK.
Densmore won a court battle to prevent the duo from hitting the road as THE DOORS OF THE 21ST CENTURY.
He says, "I'll remember the anniversary quietly at home. There's a documentary and a coffee table book that I'm part of.
"But there was a certain magic that came to the garage in Venice (California), when we all started playing together and it was bigger than us.
That magic is not ours."
