Led Zeppelin's Page Made an Honorary Citizen of Rio de Janeiro

Sept. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Rock guitarist Jimmy Page, founder of the band Led Zeppelin, was awarded honorary citizenship in the state of Rio de Janeiro for his work with Brazil's poor and abandoned children.

Page, whose song ``Stairway to Heaven'' is still heard on U.S. radio more than thirty years after it was written, was honored for supporting ``Casa Jimmy,'' a residential shelter. A 61-year-old London native, Page first went to Brazil in 1975, where he met up with Jim Capaldi, the drummer in the band Traffic, whose Brazilian wife showed them Rio's slums.

``I was visiting 20 years later to promote a record and at the time there was a lot of trouble in the favelas,'' Page said yesterday in an interview, using the Portuguese word for Rio's mountainside shantytowns. ``The whole gravity of the situation hit me and I decided I wanted to try to do something to help.''

Casa Jimmy provides a home for 15 orphaned or abandoned children and as many as five teenage mothers and their children, said Ligia da Silva, founder of Task Brasil. It is located in Santa Teresa, a neighborhood in the city close to areas known for violence, drug dealing and children with economic, educational and other difficulties, according to Task Brasil, which runs the shelter.

More than 300 children and adolescents have lived in the facility since it opened six years ago. Children stay at the home until they can be reunited with their families or are adopted. It has a budget of 1.1 million reais ($480,000) a year, according to a Casa Jimmy statement.

More Projects

ABC Trust, a U.K. charity founded in 1998 by Page's wife Jimena Gomesz-Paratcha, funds the facility as well as at least 14 other projects in Brazil, most in the northeast region, an area that includes the state of Bahia where Page said he owns a home. Among Task Brasil's backers are Bear Stearns Cos. and British Airways Plc.

Page's work in Brazil helped earn him the title Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, one of Britain's highest honors, by Queen Elizabeth in June.

The honorary citizenship Page received in Rio was approved by the state legislature on Sept. 9, 2004, said Luisi Carlette, press secretary for Paulo Melo sponsor of the bill and house leader of Brazilian Democracy Party, the largest in the assembly. The state was unable to arrange for Page to receive the award until yesterday, she said.

Page wrote ``Stairway to Heaven,'' one of the most requested songs on FM radio, according to Wikipedia, with fellow Led Zeppelin band member Robert Plant. It is also the 31st best rock song of all time, according to Rolling Stone magazine's top 500 list.

Led Zeppelin disbanded in 1980 after drummer John Bonham died, according to Wikipedia, a Web-based encyclopedia. Page has most recently recorded with Plant, Led Zepplin's lead singer, and Sean ``Diddy'' Combs, a hip-hop artist and chief executive of Bad Boy Entertainment Inc.

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Former Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page has been made an honorary citizen of Rio de Janeiro for his work with underprivileged kids in the Brazilian city.

Page was presented with the honor at a ceremony on Tuesday at Casa Jimmy (Jimmy's House), a facility set up in 1997 in the Rio district of Santa Teresa with funds from the veteran rocker.

"Jimmy is not a Carioca (Rio resident) or a Brazilian but he has solidarity with Brazil," state legislator Paulo Melo said at the event, where Page was hugged and kissed by children currently in the project.

Run by the British charity Task Brasil, Casa Jimmy offers medical and psychological support for street kids and pregnant teenagers as well as food, clothing and help in job training. More than 300 children have benefited from it.

"The greatest satisfaction is not the decoration. It is knowing that I am able to help someone who needs help," Page said.

Page's interest in the plight of Rio's poor children started in 1994 when he visited the city to promote an album and fighting broke out between street gangs. He then became involved with Task Brasil (Abandoned Street Kids of Brazil Trust).

Page, aged 61, is considered one the greatest rock guitarists of all time and Led Zeppelin were hugely popular before they broke up in 1980, with songs such as "Whole Lotta Love" and "Stairway to Heaven" still classic rock staples.

Since 1992, Task Brasil Trust had been raising awareness of the plight of street children. It had also started the educational programme. Yet it was clear that what was needed was a permanent base in Brazil where street children could receive health care and education and above all find a loving home.

Help came in the form of rock legend Jimmy Page. Whilst he was in Brazil in 1994, promoting the album 'No Quarter', a minor civil war broke loose in the biggest and most infamous favela (shanty town) in Rio de Janeiro. From his hotel room, Jimmy could see army tanks moving up the hill into the favela. It shocked him to see this happening while he was there.

Feeling he needed to do something to relieve the plight of the street children, Jimmy became involved with Task Brasil. With his very generous donation in 1996/97, Task Brasil were able to purchase a house with a large paved yard in the hilltop district of Santa Teresa in Rio de Janeiro. The house was adapted and equipped to house fifteen young children and five teenage girls, with ample space outside for them to exercise and play. There was also room for an office to manage the projects.

Fundraising events such as the Scream concert in 1999 have provided further funding, as have sales of limited edition silk screen prints of Jimmy Page and a guitar belonging to Iron Maiden. An annex was added in 1998 to provide storage space and accommodation for volunteers and caretaker.

Casa Jimmy started functioning in October 1998 and took its first intake of abandoned street children. Local care workers, youth workers and social workers were employed to provide the best possible care for the children. Since then, over two hundred and fifty children have benefited from the home.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - The surviving members of legendary rock band Led Zeppelin have been invited to the land of ice and snow to collect Sweden's most prestigious music award and a check for 1 million kronor (€104,290; US$123,180).

The British band and Russian conductor Valery Gergiev on Monday were named winners of the 2006 Polar Music Prize. The award was founded in 1989 by Stig Anderson, manager of Swedish pop group ABBA, through a donation to The Royal Swedish Academy of Music.

Calling Led Zeppelin "one of the great pioneers of rock," the academy said the group's "playful and experimental music combined with highly eclectic elements has two essential themes: Mysticism and primal energy."

Those features have come to define hard rock, the academy said.

Gergiev, a globe-trotting conductor, was cited "for the way his unique electrifying musical skills have deepened and renewed our relationship with the grand tradition; and for how he has managed to develop and amplify the importance of artistic music in these modern changing times."

Led Zeppelin and Gergiev will each receive 1 million kronor (€104,290; US$123,180). The prize is typically split between pop artists and classical musicians.

Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Robert Plant and John Bonham formed Led Zeppelin in 1968 and released their first album, named after the group, a year later. The band disbanded in 1980 when Bonham died, but its music remains hugely popular worldwide.

Gergiev is artistic and general director of St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theater, home of the Kirov opera and ballet companies, principal guest conductor of New York's Metropolitan Opera and music director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic.

In May, the London Symphony Orchestra named him its next principal conductor, starting Jan. 1, 2007.

Previous winners of the Polar Music Prize include former Beatle Paul McCartney, violinist Isaac Stern, rock musician Bruce Springsteen, conductor Pierre Boulez and music producer Quincy Jones.

The Prize will be awarded May 22 by Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf.

Gergiev has confirmed that he will attend the ceremony, and Page, Jones and Plant were also expected to come to Stockholm to collect the award, organizers said.
