Soul legend Smokey Robinson has recorded the new songs "My World" and "Fallin'" for the retrospective "My World: The Definitive Collection." Due May 3 via Motown, the project will be released as a 21-track CD as well as a separate DVD loaded with music videos and live performances.

Beyond such Smokey and the Miracles classics as "The Tears of a Clown," "The Tracks of My Tears," "Ooo Baby Baby," "I Second That Emotion" and "Shop Around," the album includes solo hits such as "Cruisin'," "Being With You," "Just To See Her" and "One Heartbeat," all of which reached the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.

The DVD rounds up a number of vintage clips of the Miracles performing on "The Ed Sullivan Show," "Hollywood a Go-Go" and "Teen Town," live Robinson performances of "Baby That Backatcha," "The Tracks of My Tears" and "Being With You," plus videos for "Just To See Her," "One Heartbeat," "Everything You Touch" and "Ebony Eyes," which features late funk legend Rick James.

As previously reported, updates of "Quiet Storm" and "The Tears of a Clown" are both featured on the upcoming album "Motown Remixed," which the label will release on May 24.

In the spring of 2004, Robinson unveiled his first gospel album, "Food for the Spirit," which he released on his own Robso label. At the time, the artist told Billboard he was working on a new studio album and a DVD project for which he would sing standards, as well as another gospel collection.

Robinson has scattered tour dates on tap through late August, beginning April 15 in Torrington, Conn.

'Obie' Benson, of Four Tops, Dies at 69'Obie' Benson, of Four Tops, Dies at 69

DETROIT - Renaldo "Obie" Benson, a member of the legendary Motown singing group the Four Tops, died Friday. He was 69.

Benson died of lung cancer that was discovered when he had a leg amputated several weeks ago because of circulation problems, said his publicist, Matt Lee.

The Four Tops sold more than 50 million records and recorded hit songs such as "Baby I Need Your Loving," "Reach Out (I'll be There)," "I Can't Help Myself" and "Standing in the Shadows of Love."

Benson's death leaves two surviving members of the original group: Levi Stubbs and Abdul "Duke" Fakir. The fourth original Top, Lawrence Payton, died of liver cancer in 1997. They are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Benson "enjoyed every moment of his life," Fakir told the Detroit Free Press through a publicist. "He put a smile on everyone's face, including my own."

The Four Tops began singing together in the 1950s under the name the Four Aims and signed a deal with Chess Records. They later changed their names to the Four Tops.

The group signed with Motown Records in 1963 and produced a string of hits over the next decade, making music history with the other acts in Berry Gordy's Motown lineup.

Benson was active with the group even into his 60s, spending more than a third of each year performing on the road. The group last played on April 8 on the "Late Show With David Letterman."

Songwriter Fined for Not Reporting Income Fri Jul 22Songwriter Fined for Not Reporting Income Fri Jul 22

LOS ANGELES - Norman Whitfield, who co-wrote a slew of R&B hits such as "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" and "I Heard it Through the Grapevine," has been sentenced to six months of home detention and fined $25,000 for failing to report more than $4 million in income to the U.S. government.

The Grammy-winning songwriter and producer, credited with helping shape the Motown Records' sound of acts such as the Temptations, was also sentenced to one year probation, said Robert Kwan, an assistant U.S. attorney in Los Angeles.

Whitfield, 65, pleaded guilty in January to one count of tax evasion.

A call to Whitfield's lawyer, Chad Hummel, wasn't immediately returned Thursday.

The Internal Revenue Service initially charged Whitfield with five misdemeanor counts of willful failure to file income tax returns between 1995 and 1999.

The unreported income exceeded $4 million, of which Whitfield owed the government $956,000 in taxes, Kwan said.

U.S. District Court Judge Stephen Wilson, who handed down the sentence Monday, opted not to order prison time for Whitfield after considering the producer's health problems, Kwan said.

"He has numerous conditions — diabetes, heart disease and kidney insufficiency," Kwan said.

MOTOWN MINES THE VAULTS FOR NEW EDITION OF 'CELLARFUL OF MOTOWN' DISCS

Motown has been mining its legendary vaults again for the new double disc Cellarful Of Motown Vol. 2. The collection features previously unreleased tracks -- many of which were misplaced for years and presumed to have been stolen. The collection features 42 cuts by Motown legends such as Stevie Wonder, the Temptations, Gladys Knight & the Pips, the Marvelettes, Martha & The Vandellas, Kim Weston, Diana Ross & the Supremes, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles and the Four Tops.

The Temptations' Otis Williams told us that unlike label heads today, Motown founder Berry Gordy never gave up on his artists if they didn't score hits immediately: "What saves the Temps and Stevie (Wonder) and Smokey (Robinson), were cornerstone artists. OK, if one product didn't do as well, you get a chance to go back and carry on. A lot of artists nowadays, if you don't happen in 'bout one, maybe two — if you get to the third chance, that's stretching it. So it has gotten to be more corporate. Back during the days of when Berry had it, it was like, 'Oh, OK, that one didn't do it, let's go back in.' See, the Temps had about eight or nine singles released before we got that big one, which was 'The Way You Do The Things You Do.'"

Cellarful Of Motown Vol. 2, which comes with liner notes and two hidden, bonus tracks, is currently available only as an import.

NEW MOTOWN BOX SET FEATURES NEW EXTENDED STEREO MIXES OF CLASSIC HITS

Motown has released a deluxe four-disc box set featuring 72 tracks -- including dozens of rarities featuring many songs released for the first time in stereo. The Motown Box, which is being released in conjunction with the PBS special Motown -- The Early Years, features hits by the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, the Supremes, the Four Tops and many more. The set applies today's state-of-the-art technology to the vintage recordings -- including 30 new stereo mixes created from the original session master tapes. Check your local listings for PBS' Motown -- The Early Years.

Among the tracks appearing in all-new, extended stereo mixes on The Motown Box are:

The Supremes' "Back In My Arms Again" and "Stop! In The Name Of Love"; the Four Tops' "Reach Out, I'll Be There"; Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"; Jr. Walker & the All Stars' "Shotgun."

The Marvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman"; Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' "The Tracks Of My Tears," "Shop Around," and "Going To A Go-Go"; the Temptations' "My Girl" and "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" -- which features a newly revised "strings" mix.

Martha & the Vandellas' "Quicksand," "Jimmy Mack" and "(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave"; the Contours' "Do You Love Me" and Stevie Wonder's "Uptight (Everything's Alright)."

Diana Ross, who continued to record on Motown until the early '80s, told us that she never takes her early days at the label or it's founder Berry Gordy for granted: "To be able to do what I love to do, to be able to sing and to be able to travel, and to be able to wear beautiful clothes and stand on stage and somehow stand in front of an audience and do what I love to do--which was my life's gifts, my blessings, to be able to sing--Berry Gordy gave me that opportunity. Motown gave me the opportunity to shine."

Motown's Reeves Advances in Detroit Race Motown's Reeves Advances in Detroit Race

DETROIT - Motown legend Martha Reeves felt like dancing. "I want to jump around up in here, but we're in the VIP room and everyone is being very sophisticated," Reeves said early Wednesday following a successful primary run for Detroit City Council.

Competing in a field of 120 candidates, Reeves advanced to the Nov. 8 general election along with 17 other council hopefuls.

With 685 of the city's 720 precincts reporting, or 95 percent, Reeves had 26,306 votes, or about 3 percent, putting her in ninth place in Tuesday's primary. The top 18 vote-getters will be on November's ballot. Nine will win election to the City Council.

"We're going to walk it off at Belle Isle and let everyone know how happy we are," Reeves said. The 64-year-old singer planned to campaign at the city park on Wednesday.

Reeves, who still travels and performs, was the lead singer of Martha and the Vandellas and had Top 10 singles decades ago that included "Dancing in the Street," "Heat Wave" and "Nowhere to Run." She was identified as a "recording artist" on some of Detroit's ballots, which allowed candidates to include short descriptions underneath their names.

Keller Andrews, 70, said Reeves' fame didn't sway him to vote for her.

"We need some people that are for real," the retired contractor said. "Show business is fine."

Still others appeared to be attracted to the celebrity aura of Reeves, who signed autographs and thanked well-wishers while sitting at the lounge with campaign volunteers, including Motown's famed etiquette teacher Maxine Powell.

"My biggest concern are the youths of the city," Reeves said. "I want to see them have as much love as we received while creating the Motown sound. Music has been my life, and it will always be my life."

Reeves moved to Detroit from Alabama when she was 11 months old. She said in a recent interview that her top priority is ensuring the city's neighborhoods are adequately policed. She said she's been unable to fix up some of the 18 old buildings she's acquired since 1999 with the intention of renovating because the neighborhoods are wild areas.

"Junkies and crackheads have been taking down boards and even held some of the workmen at gunpoint until they ran away," she said. "The policing needs to be there, and it needs to be visible."

She also has her own vision of sprucing up the struggling city's downtown: a mall to draw businesses and keep shoppers in the heart of the city, a landscape dotted with Motown's musical legends and a nightclub devoted to the record label's legendary sound. Those endeavors, she said, "could increase our tourism 100-fold."

"One of my biggest dreams is to put up statues downtown — statues of Stevie Wonder ... and Smokey Robinson. That would be really great," Reeves said.

HOLLAND-DOZIER-HOLLAND REUNITE FOR NEW MUSICAL, RELEASE MOTOWN COMPILATIONHOLLAND-DOZIER-HOLLAND REUNITE FOR NEW MUSICAL, RELEASE MOTOWN COMPILATION

Motown's most successful songwriting team -- Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier and Brian Holland, better known as Holland-Dozier-Holland (H-D-H) -- are back together writing their first new songs in over 30 years. The trio teamed up to write the score for the upcoming stage musical version of The First Wives Club. To celebrate the reunion, the trio have released the new Motown compilation Heaven Must Have Sent You: The Holland-Dozier-Holland Collection. The three-disc set racks up all the trio's hits made famous by the Supremes, the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye and many more. The collection marks the first time all the H-D-H hits have been available in one package.

Lamont Dozier explained to The Detroit News that, "We've gotten back together. We pushed back a lot of the old things, trying to get rid of the negative stuff and look at this as a new day, a refreshing, reinventing type of thing." He admitted, "Doing a musical is something that's been in my heart for years. We finally decided to do it together." No word yet on an opening night for The First Wives Club.

Eddie Holland explained to us why the Holland-Dozier-Holland team worked so well together:"The basic thing is that, sometimes the track, they'd cut it, they'd give me a demo with the melody line. Sometimes it would have an idea, sometimes it wouldn't. But whatever the situation was, I would have to come up with an idea, write the song, teach the artist the song, take the artist in the studio to dub them in. "

The trio have written over 300 songs, including the Four Tops' Top Ten hits "Standing In The Shadows Of Love," "Bernadette," "It's The Same Old Song," and their Number Ones "I Can't Help Myself," and "Reach Out (I'll Be There)."

H-D-H are also responsible for writing and producing Martha & the Vandellas' "Nowhere To Run," "Heatwave" and "Jimmy Mack" -- as well as the Supremes' Number One hits "Where Did Our Love Go," "Baby Love," "Stop! In The Name Of Love," "Come See About Me," "Back In My Arms Again," and "I Hear A Symphony."

Holland-Dozier-Holland were inducted into The Songwriters Hall Of Fame in 1988 and The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1990.

Motown Star Advances in Detroit RaceMotown Star Advances in Detroit Race
Wed Aug 3

DETROIT - Martha Reeves says the Motown Sound was all about love during the 1960s, when she was the lead singer of Martha and the Vandellas and belting out hits like "Dancing in the Street" and "Heat Wave." Reeves, 64, felt the love Tuesday when Detroit voters nominated her for the City Council.

The top 18 vote-getters earned slots on November's ballot, and she finished ninth with 27,313 votes. Nine City Council members will be elected in the fall.

"People love me everywhere. On an unofficial level, I'm an ambassador and a civil servant for Detroit. Now I'm going for the official title," Reeves said, waving her arms and jangling her gold charm bracelets.

"I could've been in L.A. and forgot about all this stuff. I could sell my property, move to Las Vegas and just play the slot machines. Why should I be bothered? Because I love Detroit. We have an obligation to hold onto its history."

Reeves still travels and performs and has her own record label and production company. She said she plans to go into the studio later this week to record a gospel CD.

"I've been dancing in the street," she said. As for the City Council post, "this is not a need for a job. It's a job that needs to be done."

Reeves said her top priority is improving police protection for the city's neighborhoods. She said thugs have prevented her from fixing up some of the 18 old buildings she has acquired since 1999.

"Junkies and crackheads have been taking down boards and even held some of the workmen at gunpoint until they ran away," she said. "The policing needs to be there, and it needs to be visible."

To spruce up the struggling city's downtown and boost tourism, she is proposing a shopping mall, a nightclub devoted to Motown's legendary sound, and a landscape dotted with tributes to the record label's biggest stars.

"One of my biggest dreams is to put up statues downtown — statues of Stevie Wonder ... and Smokey Robinson," she said. "That would be really great."

MOTOWN SONGWRITERS DEBATED WHICH SUPREME SHOULD SING 'WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO'MOTOWN SONGWRITERS DEBATED WHICH SUPREME SHOULD SING 'WHERE DID OUR LOVE GO'

Motown's legendary songwriting team Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier and Brian Holland -- better known as Holland-Dozier-Holland (H-D-H) -- have released an all new compilation titled Heaven Must Have Sent You: The Holland-Dozier-Holland Collection. The three-disc set features all the hits that H-D-H wrote for the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye and the Supremes.

Lamont Dozier says that he originally thought Diana Ross was wrong for the lead vocal on the group's first Number One "Where Did Our Love Go." He recalled to The Detroit News that, "Diana had a high thin voice that used to annoy me. Eddie too. We'd say, 'Why don't we let Mary Wilson sing the song?' But Brian was adamant, it's got to be Diana. Two against one, (so) we finally let her sing."

Eddie Holland agrees that Mary Wilson would've done a great job: "I wanted Mary to do it. I felt her voice was very soft, and I thought anyone who could sing it in a soft, sensuous way, that would be good."

Dozier added that after they lowered the song's key for Ross she made it her own: "She pulled it off. It was her voice and that take-no-prisoners attitude when she's onstage, she was just out there, hungry to be the star."

Mary Wilson told us that she's amazed that Holland-Dozier-Holland never saw the Supremes perform live: "I remember when we had our first hit record, "Where Did Our Love Go?" And "Baby Love." We went to the Copacabana and we were trying to get Eddie, Brian and Lamont to come out and see us onstage. They never wanted to come out and see us onstage. All they wanted to do was to stay back there, and write and produce. And that's pretty much what they did. I don't know if they ever saw us onstage."

Holland-Dozier-Holland are currently collaborating on the musical version of The First Wives Club -- their first project together in over 30 years. No opening night has been set.

The trio wrote most of the biggest hits of the Motown era including the Four Tops' Top Ten hits "Standing In The Shadows Of Love," "Bernadette," "It's The Same Old Song," and their Number Ones "I Can't Help Myself," and "Reach Out (I'll Be There)."

Motown singer/songwriter Willie Hutch diesMotown singer/songwriter Willie Hutch dies

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Veteran singer-songwriter-producer Willie Hutch, who helped compose several hits for the Jackson 5, died Tuesday of undisclosed causes in Dallas. He was 59.

Best known for his work at Motown, his association with the label began in 1970 when record producer Hal Davis asked Hutch to help complete a song for the Jackson 5. "I'll Be There" became a hit for the group as did Hutch's subsequent collaborations with the quintet: "Got to Be There" and "Never Can Say Goodbye."

Hired to work regularly with other Motown artists by label founder Berry Gordy, Hutch logged production credits on albums by the Miracles, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, among others.

Branching into soundtracks, Hutch penned the music for the 1973 blaxploitation movie "The Mack." The critically acclaimed soundtrack spun off two of Hutch's biggest R&B hits, "Brother's Gonna Work It Out" and "Slick."

Hutch's other Motown solo albums during the 1970s include "Fully Exposed," "Foxy Brown" and "Concert in Blues," as well as his 1975 top 10 R&B hit, "Love Power." His most recent work includes "From the Heart" (1994), "The Mack Is Back" (1996) and 2002's "Sexalicious."

Born Willie McKinley Hutchinson in Los Angeles in 1946, Hutch was raised in Dallas where he began singing as a teenager. He released his first solo single in 1964, "Love Has Put Me Down." Before working at Motown, Hutch penned songs for the 5th Dimension.
