Collins Preps Live DVD, U.S. Tour

(08/16/04) -- Former Genesis crooner Phil Collins is preparing to embark on both a North American leg of his first tour in six years, and the release of a live DVD shot during his recent European tour. Due in stores later this year, the DVD captures the singer's June performance in Paris. Later this year also expect Love Songs, a two-CD compilation of romantic tunes from Collins' illustrious career. You can see the man perform some of those songs in person when he plays the Staples Center on August 31st.

Phil Collins has done so well for two decades as a singer-songwriter that some of his fans don't realize he's been one of rock's best drummers since 1970.

"It's incredible," he says with a laugh, when asked about those who know him only as the singer of such '80s solo hits as In the Air Tonight, One More Night and Take Me Home, recorded after he played drums for the art-rock band Genesis at its creative peak in the '70s.

For the concert tour that visits Phoenix on Wednesday, he adds, "I start off on the drums . . . and I finish on the drums - so if you arrive late and leave early, you still won't know that I play drums."

In recent years, Collins has expanded his musical palette even further, becoming an Oscar-winning composer of movie soundtracks and, now, the man behind the music for Disney's Tarzan: The Musical, which opens on Broadway next year.

A contented family man living in Switzerland with his third wife, Orianne, and their young son, Collins has his eye out for new challenges as he mounts what he calls his last tour of arenas.

"I keep getting tempted with these opportunities to do something outside my normal work," says the British-born Collins, 53. "The Tarzan thing, I'm having so much fun with it."

But he's quick to point out that this concert outing, dubbed "The First Final Farewell Tour," is serious business because it represents the end of a phase in a musical life that's taken him around the world several times.

"I'm not retiring," he says. "I'm still going to write, make records, do movie scores if someone asks me. . . . I'm still going to work, but I just won't go on the road. I will even do showcase concerts, the off gig here and there."

It's clear that Collins is at ease with his goodbye to touring, given that he suffered a serious hearing loss in his left ear in 2000 and that he wants to be home when his 3-year-old son, Nicholas, eventually starts school.

Having sold 80 million albums and won eight Grammys, despite being labeled too bland by many music critics, Collins has nothing left to prove to the music industry.

And although the married members of Genesis brought their families and nannies on the road in the '70s and '80s, Collins - who has three older children from previous marriages - acknowledges that he relishes the chance of at-home time with Nicholas and Orianne, 31, who is expecting the couple's second child in November.

"I'd like to think that family's always been a priority," he says. "But when it's running parallel to something (musical) that you have to do, it's a bit like Spinal Tap. You're all together - 'Let's go! Let's go!'

"I realize the importance of being there for my kids more than maybe I did when I first had kids. And I've got a better relationship with my older kids when I've tried to explain that to them."

He says his hearing problem has stabilized, and advanced onstage ear protection helps him minimalize exposure to the decibels that also have affected the career of the Who's Pete Townshend. But Collins admits that his doctors prefer that he work in the better-controlled environs of the recording studio.

That backdrop makes this tour a bittersweet affair for which Collins is sparing no expense.

He's expanded his chorus of backup singers to six, after using multiple singers in his work on another Disney film, Brother Bear, and he'll have a four-piece horn section.

"When I heard six singers together, I thought, 'Man, this takes pressure off me.' "

And despite his joking, there will be plenty of drumming from Collins, who will be joined by percussionist Luis Conte and drummer Chester Thompson.

"I'm a better drummer than anything else, and I never cease to realize that," Collins says.

In fact, rhythm is the starting point for all of Collins' solo work, from Another Day in Paradise to Against All Odds to Sussudio.

"Most of the time, when I'm writing, I get a groove on a drum machine - an atmospheric thing like a Take Me Home pattern or an In the Air Tonight pattern - that will spark a mood or direction in me. The words usually end up having a very percussive rhythm to them."

As much as he's wrapped up in solo projects (an album due Sept. 28 will spotlight his favorite love songs), Collins remains close to most of his former Genesis bandmates, including Peter Gabriel, whom Collins replaced as frontman.

"And that makes the chance of a one-off reunion all the more possible, because we enjoy each other's company."

Вышел новый DVD "Inside Genesis. 1975-1980". Купил, теперь почти жалею. Очень короткие фрагменты из концертных выступлений Genesis времен Trick Of The Tail и Duke, обильно приправленные рассуждениями всяческих критиков о том, что Genesis - это хорошо. Будто мы и без них этого не знаем. Зато когда пианист критик начинает анализировать клавишные гармонии Бэнкса, он их просто врет, что явно не украшает.
Ну, ладно, пусть будет до кучи.

Back from a massive European tour this summer with Phil Collins, Mike + The Mechanics & Paul Carrack are to play London's Shepherd's Bush Empire on 7th September 2004 and release double album package 'Rewired & The Hits'.

Originally started in the 1980s as a solo project for Mike Rutherford, The Mechanics have released a total of 5 albums to date with the most recent, Rewired, being the first since the sad loss of co-lead vocalist Paul Young in July 2000. Phil Collins on his final tour

Phil Collins says his current tour, called My First Final Farewell Tour, will be his last because he wants to spend more time with his young children.

Collins, married for the third time to Orianne Cevey, has a three-year-old son and the couple are expecting a baby in December.

"I'm riddled with guilt about not seeing my other children grow up," he told the New York Post.

"I'm 53, and I feel differently about life. I'm doing this for all my kids. I want to be around so we can enjoy each other."

Switzerland-based Collins whose net worth is said to be £335 million, is currently on tour in North America in support of his upcoming double album Love Songs: Old & New.

His debut musical, Tarzan, backed by the Walt Disney Co., is due to open on Broadway in 2006.

Ребята, ну неужели вы считаете,что OK Computer лучше Calling All Starions? Да одна только Uncertain Wether стоит всего творчества Radiohead, при всем к ним уважении.Давайте все-таки будем объективны!Calling All Stations не был похож на старый Genesis, но это вовсе не значит,что он хуже.Трезвее надо оценивать положение дел в современной музыке.

Неделю назад я приобрел, наконец, себе в коллекцию виниловый британский альбом GENESIS "Calling All Stations", с четвертой пустой стороной и выгравированными на ней портретами музыкантов. И хотя я, как давнишний поклонник этой замечательной группы прекрасно понимаю, что "золотой период" группы уже давно закончился, но для меня все равно этот диск гораздо приятнее слушать, чем упомянутый уже выше Radiohead.

Да даже сравнивать смешно!

Высказываю свое субьективное мнение. Мне очень нравится ранний Genesis. Любимый диск того периода - Фокстрот. С очень большим уважением отношусь к работам группы без Габриеля. С огромным удовольствием переслущиваю диски Duke, Абакаб. Но Calling All Station, несмотря на неоднократное прослушивание, диск мне абсолютно не пошел.
P.S. Сравнивать O.K. Computer и Calling all station не смешно, а очень грустно и не в пользу последнего... имхо.

моя имха: я ОЧЕНЬ люблю Genesis, и для меня они всегда будут в личном Top 5. И я довольно спокоен к брит-попу, но именно объективности ради нужно признать, что OK Computer - выдающееся произведение во всех отношениях, тогда как Callin All Stations - полная посредственность, которая может тронуть только самых преданных (сказал бы "упертых", но это будет уже перебор :-))) поклонников Genesis. Об этом неприятно говорить, тем более, что ранние альбомы Genesis (первой половины 70-х), не побоюсь пафоса - уникальное явление мировой музыкальной культуры.

The Musical Box объявили The Lamb Lies Down... на 20 ноября в Торонто. К сожалению, вряд ли удастся сходить в этот раз, но очень хочется. Они готовили эту постановку года три, и это должно быть нечто. Вообще, в отличие от многочисленных cover bands эти ребята мало что музыкально феноменально одарены, их еще и благославили практически все участники классических Genesis, Хаккет даже с ними джемовал несколько раз, и Гэбриэл всячески выражает собственное расположение, чего от товарища Питера мало кто удостаивается по жизни... Парадокс, но именно на их концерте я в полной степени оценил музыкальное величие оигинальных Genesis - так много изысканных музыкальных нюансов окрыли для слушателей The Musical Box. Когда наконец выйдет их давно обещанный DVD, его просто необходимо заиметь всем любителям Genesis.

Читаю сейчас статью дня, и сразу задаю себе и вам ряд вопросов.
Во-первых, почему упомянуты "народные" названия первого сольного альбома, но "забыты" общеупотребимые Scratch для второго и Melt для третьего?
Абсолютно не соответствует истине сообщение: "В кулуарах говорили, что GENESIS предлагали Гэбриэлу покрыть его долги от упомянутого фестиваля, но Питер отказался, и тогда его пригласили для участия в совместном концерте."
Совместный концерт состоялся ИСКЛЮЧИТЕЛЬНО для того, чтобы покрыть долги Габриела от первого фестиваля WOMAD, именно поэтому Габриел настоял на том, чтобы не записывалось ни видео, ни аудио записи данного события. Да и самого Питера вынесли на сцену в открытом гробу, что символизировало его окончательный и бесповоротный разрыв с Genesis.
Джерри обычно зовут Марутта, а Ларри - Фастом, но это столь же незначимо, как и наименование Муга - Могом.
Почему-то не упомянуто участие Габриела в кинопроекте Babe, где он написал финальную песню. Преувеличен успех OVO и многое другое.
А в целом, интересно.
