John Lennon Memorabilia to Be Auctioned, Associated Press John Lennon Memorabilia to Be Auctioned, Associated Press

LONDON - Money can't buy you love. But a few hundred thousand can get you a piece of Beatles history. A collection of John Lennon memorabilia valued by auctioneers at more than $2 million is being sold in London Thursday.

The sale includes youthful paintings and handwritten lyrics, jackets, eyeglasses and even furniture from the late former Beatle's home. The most valuable items have been gathered over 25 years by one anonymous American collector. Auctioneer Cooper Owen, a company which specializes in music and film memorabilia, says it constitutes "the most definitive collection of John Lennon memorabilia ever assembled."

The centerpiece of the sale at London's Hippodrome nightclub is handwritten lyrics to "All You Need is Love," salvaged from Lennon's music stand after The Beatles' final TV appearance in 1967 and estimated at between $870,000 and $1 million.

Cooper Owen director Ted Owen said the manuscript was "the Holy Grail of Beatles lyrics."

"It's probably one of the few remaining Beatles lyrics in private collectors' hands and one of the most important musical manuscripts in existence," Owen said. "It was the anthem of the peace movement ... the anthem of 1967."

The sale includes other items that loom large in the history of the 1960s. There's the Vox Continental organ that Lennon played during The Beatles' famous Shea Stadium concert in New York in 1965, expected to fetch more than $350,000.

The tunic of a World War One military band member, worn by Lennon for a 1966 Life magazine photo shoot — and a possible inspiration for the group's martial look on the cover of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" — is valued at least $175,000.

The bedspread from Lennon and Yoko Ono's 1969 Montreal "bed-in," embroidered with the message "all you need is love," carries an estimate of at least $53,000.

While Beatles memorabilia is among the most coveted by rock collectors, past auctions have sometimes been disappointing. Last year an autograph Lennon signed shortly before he was shot and killed outside his Manhattan apartment building in 1980 failed to reach its minimum price of $143,000 at a Cooper Owen auction.

But Pete Nash, a memorabilia expert with the British Beatles Fan Club, said many of the items in Thursday's sale were special.

"It's lovely, lovely stuff," Nash said. "There are some real museum pieces. It's not the usual run-of-the-mill memorabilia."

He said the most expensive items, beyond the reach of most Beatles collectors, would likely go to "about 20 heavy-duty collectors in the world who seem to have unlimited funds."

Owen said pieces like the "All You Need is Love" lyrics were worth every penny.

"They're part of our history now," he said. "In the British Library, opposite the Magna Carta, are three sets of Beatles lyrics next to Beethoven and Bach."

Louise B. Cooper, the Director of Cooper Owen auction house, wears the military band tunic that was worn by John Lennon during the classic 1966 Life Magazine Henry Grossman photo session when the The Beatles revealed their new look and holds an oil painting painted by Lennon when he was unknown and attending art school in Liverpool, during a press preview in central London, Monday July 4, 2005. The tunic and painting will go to auction, along with other Lennon memorabilia, as part of Cooper Owen's John Lennon sale on July 28, 2005. The tunic is estimated to reach around 150,000 pounds (US$264,000/ 221,500 euros) and the painting between 80,000 - 100,000 pounds (US$140,800 - 176,000/ 118,200-147,780 euros).

Thermos, talc and a gonk in auction of Beatles memorabilia
Friday August 19, 2005

Lot 118 is a very rare Paul McCartney Beatles gonk dating from 1964, the year of Can't Buy Me Love and A Hard Day's Night. "What a classic item!" enthused Stephen Bailey, manager of the Beatles Shop in Liverpool.

And what of lot 169, an important collection of original handbills for Heswall Jazz Club, including one for the Beatles from September 25 1962? "A lovely thing," sighed Mr Bailey. The Beatles Shop will stage its 15th Fab Four memorabilia auction in Liverpool on August 27 during the city's annual Beatles convention. The gonk could set you back up to £350 and the handbills are expected to fetch up to £3,000.

"The market for Beatles stuff is still amazing after all these years," said Mr Bailey. "The Beatles Shop opened 18 years ago and I think I'll still have a job in 18 years' time.

"Items are sent in for the auction from all over the world and people bring them with them when they come for the convention. Often they are selling things so that they buy other bits and pieces and keep collecting."

Material this year has come from Australia, the US, Holland and Germany, with much more coming from Merseyside. "Local people still seem to have stuff in their attics and cupboards. After spring cleaning, people come into the shop to ask if something they have found is worth anything.

"I have to tell them that their copy of Please, Please Me is not worth a lot a lot because 700,000 copies of it were sold. But a tatty bit of paper advertising a Beatles concert somewhere might be worth £1,000."

Big money items in the sale include Beatle autographs obtained at the El Rio club, Macclesfield in January 1963; a fully autographed Beatles page from the 1963 programme for Roy Orbison's UK tour; and a menu from La Dolce Vita in Newcastle from the same year, signed not only by the Beatles, but also by Orbison and Gerry and the Pacemakers. Items that should not break the bank include a Beatles talc tin by Margo of Mayfair (excellent condition; up to £180) and a Beatles Thermos flask (missing red lid; up to £70).

"I've seen everything including bits of toilet paper stolen from the Apple building and bits of George's shirt sent to fans by his mother," said Mr Bailey. "But I like the little things. We have a membership card for the Cyn Lennon Beatles fan club in the US. It's probably worth only about £30 but it's amazing the club existed and someone collected the card."

But while there is plenty of Beatles memorabilia for sale, Mr Bailey regrets the lack of Merseybeat material on the market from the Searchers, the Hollies, Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas, Gerry and the Pacemakers and Rory Storm and the Hurricanes.

"Many people think that in 1961 these bands were musically a lot better than the Beatles, who were just starting out and were a bunch of scruffs who could hardly play their instruments. But it just happened that two of the Beatles were exceptionally good songwriters."

Also for sale is a signed first edition of Paul McCartney's 2001 poetry collection, Blackbird Singing. But it is not Mr Bailey's copy, acquired four years ago. "I queued 29 hours to get it. It was great fun. Wonderful, especially at three in the morning when it started snowing. But I wouldn't do it again."

Beatles' `Revolver' Lyrics May Fetch $369,000, Christie's Says

Sept. 5 (Bloomberg) -- A draft of the Beatles' ``I'm Only Sleeping'' lyrics, written by John Lennon for the ``Revolver'' album, may fetch more than 200,000 pounds ($369,000) at a London sale on Sept. 28, said Christie's International.

Lennon wrote the 17 lines of the song mostly in blue ink on the back of a bill for his car phone dated April 25, 1966, the London-based auction house said. The lyrics are being sold by a collector who kept them for more than 30 years after receiving them as a gift from Lennon, Christie's said.

Beatles documents are top sellers at pop memorabilia auctions. A handwritten copy of the Beatles' song, ``All You Need is Love,'' sold for a hammer price of 600,000 pounds at a July sale at London's Hippodrome rock-music venue held by Cooper Owen Plc, even though it wasn't a draft version, which tends to be more prized because it shows the creative process.

Lennon said in a Rolling Stone interview in 1968 that ``I'm Only Sleeping'' was one of the songs, along with ``Lucy in the Sky'' and ``Strawberry Fields,'' that really meant something to him, according to Christie's.

Christie's sale will have more than 230 lots of memorabilia relating to groups from the Beatles to Oasis, priced at 200 pounds to 200,000 pounds. The only existing recording of the Beatles' 1964 concert in Hong Kong, made by a freelance journalist at the Princess Theatre in Kowloon and never broadcast, has a top estimate of 40,000 pounds, it said.

The Beatles had 17 U.K. No. 1 singles, second only to Elvis Presley, who had 21.

Lennon, born in Liverpool in 1940, was shot dead outside his New York apartment house in 1980.

Items in the sale will be on view at Christie's South Kensington rooms at 85 Old Brompton Road from Sept. 24 to 28.

John Lennon White Suit from Abbey Road Album CoverJohn Lennon White Suit from Abbey Road Album Cover
A two-piece ivory wool blend suit worn by John Lennon as he appeared on the cover of the final Beatles album Abbey Road (Capitol Records, 1969).

Consisting of a two button jacket having maker's medallion and chain at inner left pocket reading: "Tedd/6 Place Victor Hugo/Paris" and matching flat front pants having label reading: "Tedd/6, Place Victor-Hugo-Paris/John Lennon." Also present is facsimile copy of a letter of authenticity.

The indelible single file image of The Beatles crossing the street outside London's Abbey Road Studios transpired in a brief, impromptu half hour session between one of their final recording sessions in August 1969. Paul McCartney recalls the session, "The crossing was right outside, and we said, 'Let's just go out, get a photographer and walk out on the crossing. It'll be done in half an hour.' It was getting quite late and you always have to get the cover in ahead of the sound. So we got hold of the photographer Iain Macmillan, gave him a half hour and walked across the crossing."

Lennon remembers, "We were just wishing the photographer would hurry up. Too many people were hanging around…We're meant to be recording, not posing for Beatle pictures -- that's what we were thinking. And, I was muttering, Come on, hurry up now, keep in step." (Both excerpts from "The Beatles Anthology," Chronicle Books, San Francisco, 2000, page 341 & 342). The suit was gifted from Lennon to close friend Richard Ross; the owner of the famed New York club and restaurant, Home.

The final Abbey Road re-mix on August 20th would be the last time all four Beatles would share the same studio space.
