AC/DC To The Rescue

(08/30/04) -- AC/DC singer Brian Johnson and bassist Cliff Williams are teaming up to play a benefit concert in Florida that could bring in more than $100,000 for the American Red Cross and their effort to help the victims of Hurricane Charley. The concert will take place on September 10th at the Germain Arena in Fort Myers and will also include Bad Company singer Brian Howe. AC/DC guitar players Angus and Malcolm Young are currently in New Zealand and will regretfully be unable to participate in the show. Rock on!

Report: Melbourne Officials To Drop AC/DC Street Proposal - Sep. 2, 2004

Australia's The Age is reporting that the Melbourne City Council looks set to disappoint AC/DC fans by dropping a popular plan to honor the Australian rockers with a city street name.

Planning committee chairwoman Catherine Ng confirmed Thursday night (September 2) the council would consider other options next week, including a plaque on the footpath in Swanston Street.

AC/DC would be the first entry on an "honour roll" of renowned musicians with strong links to Melbourne.

Cr Ng said a Swanston Street plaque was more appropriate because AC/DC's strongest link to the central business district was the 1975 film clip for the classic track "It's A Long Way To The Top", which shows the band performing on a flatbed truck travelling down Swanston Street.
She also said a roll of honour would be more sensible than finding an alternative lane and having to search for an association between the lane and the band.

The proposed renaming of Corporation Lane, off Flinders Lane, was not welcomed by some property owners and businesses in the area, who argued AC/DC did not reflect the diverse character of the area, she said. But Bill Walsh, an AC/DC fan who runs a rock 'n' roll bar, Cherry, in Corporation Lane disagreed. He said the public response to renaming the lane had been overwhelmingly positive.

"Everyone I spoke to about it thought it was a great idea... people were already coming here (to the lane) to have their photo taken," he said.

Another vocal supporter, former Triple R broadcaster James Young, said that after proposing the name change, the council's compromise was akin to "offering supporters the world and giving them an atlas".

But the renaming is not dead yet, with some councillors last night vowing to hold firm.

"To put a plaque up instead sounds fairly weak-kneed to me... it just sounds crazy," said Cr David Risstrom of the Greens.

"We've had a proper consultation and I'll still be backing AC DC Lane," he said.

In July, the council decided to rename the lane AC DC Lane, subject to public consultation and other conditions. Public submissions were eight to one in favour of honouring the Australian rockers with their own laneway.

AC/DC-Inspired Movie 'Thunderstruck' To Be Released On DVD - Sep. 11, 2004

"Thunderstruck", a new Australian feature comedy which tells the story of five fans who make a pact during AC/DC's Australian tour in 1991 that if one of them dies before they reach 40 the others will bury him beside the grave of AC/DC's late singer, Bon Scott, will be released in Australia on DVD on November 10 via Warner Home Video, according to DVDAnswers.com. The disc itself features a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, an audio commentary with the director and producer, deleted scenes, a making-of documentary, and a theatrical trailer.

AC/DC Street Name Tribute To Be Officially Unveiled This Friday - Sep. 27, 2004

Next Friday, October 1, 2004, Melbourne will be the first city in Australia to honor a rock 'n' roll band by having a street named after them. On that day a laneway called Corporation Lane (off Flinders Lane) will be renamed ACDC Lane after much campaigning by fans of the band.

This is a huge coup for AC/DC fans, and to commemorate the changeover, Australian bands THE CASANOVAS, DALLAS CRANE and OSTERBERG will be performing at Cherry Bar (located on ACDC Lane) where the official celebrations will be taking place in the evening. In addition, a 15-vinyl AC/DC boxed set will be given away to one lucky concert attendee. All you need to do is buy a ticket to the gig and you receive a raffle ticket to enter the draw automatically. The prize is announced on the night. Tickets can be pre-purchased from the bar and are very limited.

Report: AC/DC Lane Name Change Irks Councillors - Sep. 30, 2004

Australia's News.com.au reports: The City of Melbourne will tomorrow (Oct. 1) rename a back lane in the city centre after legendary Australian rock band AC/DC.

Guitarist Angus Young, a founding member of the band, had a special message for fans and users of the lane: "Welcome to the Highway to Hell."

City of Melbourne councillors on Wednesday agreed to change the name of Corporation Lane, which runs off Flinders Lane near Swanston St in central Melbourne, to ACDC Lane after considering the proposal since June this year.

Council workers will tomorrow erect new street signs proclaiming the name change.

The band resided in Melbourne during the 1970s and filmed a video for its 1975 classic "It's a Long Way to the Top" on the back of a truck rolling down Swanston St.

Two members of the band were also born in Melbourne.

In a brief recorded statement, Angus Young and brother Malcolm thanked the City of Melbourne and fans for the honour.

The council briefly dropped the proposal last month in the face of opposition from businesses in the lane concerned the name change did not reflect the lane's character or history.

It instead considered an alternative plan for a Hollywood Boulevard-style strip of plaques recognising top Australian musicians along nearby Swanston St.

But at a September 9 council meeting on Wednesday night, the councillors switched their support back to renaming the lane after more than 50 submissions from fans, and five objections.

One objection was from a church in Queensland, a council spokesman said.

AC/DC Fans Warned To Leave New Street Sign Alone - Sep. 30, 2004

Australia's Herald Sun is reporting that extra security measures are planned to prevent fans from removing the ACDC Lane signs in Mebourne after they are installed Friday (Oct. 1).

Lord Mayor John So will install the signs at what was Corporation Lane, off Flinders Lane in the block between Exhibition and Russell streets.

Councillor Kimberley Kitching hoped fans would leave the signs alone. "They'll be well secured so don't even bother trying to take them," she said.

"Also, some of the bars in the lane are strong supporters of the renaming and they will be working with us to make sure the signs stay there."

Lord Mayor John So erected the sign for ACDC Lane Friday to cheers and bagpipes playing their classic "It's a Long Way to the Top", according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

Cr So called Melburnians to pump their collective fists in the air in honour of the new thoroughfare, formerly known as Corporation Lane.

"As the song says, this is a highway to hell. But I say this is a lane to heaven. Let us rock," Cr So said.

Members of Australia's music scene were present to honour the rock legends who made Melbourne their home in the 1970s.

"I think the whole band would be blown away," music guru Ian "Molly" Meldrum said.

"I'm sure if (late AC/DC singer) Bon (Scott) was still alive he would be very proud. If Bon was still alive he would definitely be here because he'd be a very proud man."

ACDC Lane is parallel with Swanston Street, where the video clip to "It's a Long Way to the Top" was filmed, and Spring Street, near the site of the band's Melbourne musical home, Berties.

The City of Melbourne has had copies of the laneway's sign made, in anticipation fans might steal it.

"We expect businesses to protect their address, so we don't expect there will be too many problems," Cr Kimberley Kitching said.

"We would expect it would be pretty hard to get it off though, you'd have to come with some pretty good equipment."

Дык, это мнение разделяют и многие, кто побывал на торонтовском "САРС-фесте" в прошлом году: после эй-си/ди-си роллинговское,увы, не самое удачное выступление, выглядело бледненьким и не слишком "драйвовым", и, толповые-массы-пипла после "слажавшего" в "Старт ми ап" Джаггера потихонечку стали покидать место действа...
Интересно, как смотрелись эти две команды в одном туре - в одной обойме ("Рок ми, бэйби" не в счёт)?

According to a posting at AC-DC.net, Epic/Sony will issue an AC/DC double DVD, entitled "Family Jewels", on March 29. The two-disc set will include video material from the periods 1975 to 1980, and 1980 to 1993, respectively.

In other news, Bubi Heilmann, a German photographer for the Bravo magazine who first brought AC/DC to Germany in 1976 has just published a book (200+ pages, hardcover) containing hundreds of his best photos of the band taken from 1976 to 1980. Currently only available in Germany, the book can be ordered from Amazon.de.

Also on the AC/DC-related front, a special AC/DC issue of Guitar Legend was published last month, featuring reprints of all AC/DC interviews done by Guitar World magazine over the years (including tons of rare photos).

Live versions of "Riff Raff", "Whole Lotta Rosie" and "Show Business" are also included, as are a host of small-screen appearances, among them a performance on Spanish television just 10 days before Scott died in 1980.

AC/DC's Brian Johnson-led era is chronicled on the second disc, beginning with videos for "Hells Bells", "What Do You Do for Money Honey", "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution" and the title cut from the 1980 album "Back in Black".
