OLIVIA HARRISON AND ERIC CLAPTON ANNOUNCE TRIBUTE TO GEORGE HARRISON NOVEMBER 29, 2002 AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL

Olivia Harrison and Eric Clapton have planned a very special performance tribute in honour of George Harrison. This unique event will take place at London’s Royal Albert Hall November 29, 2002--the one-year anniversary of George’s passing. The evening will feature the music of George Harrison, as well as music he loved.

Performers include (in alphabetical order): Joe Brown, Eric Clapton, Jools Holland, Jim Keltner, Jeff Lynne, Sir Paul McCartney, various members of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Tom Petty, Leon Russell, Ravi Shankar and Ringo Starr. Eric Clapton will supervise the musical content of the tribute.

Proceeds from the concert will be donated to The Material World Charitable Foundation. Funded by George Harrison since its establishment in 1973, the foundation supports the arts, music, education and people with special needs.

Olivia Harrison noted: “The tribute for George will resound not only within the Albert Hall but hopefully reach the spirit of the man so loved by his friends who will be performing and attending."

Tickets go on sale from 9.00am on Friday 11th October. Prices vary from Ј25 - Ј150. Maximum 6 tickets per person. Tickets are available from:

: To take a different tack on the album, there's a line on the song 'Dreamville' that leaps out, which is 'I Keep waking up all by myself, with a bluejay in my brain.' The song 'You and Me' has a certain 'fab' flavor to it and an orchestration that evokes George Martin, and there's even a Ringo-like drum sound at one point. I'm wondering if there's a little bit of a salute to The Beatles in general and maybe to your friend, George Harrison?

PETTY: "I think we can't help it. We're such Beatles fans and always have been. I think that, to me, The Beatles is kind of like the best champagne. That's as good as it gets to me. And I can't help being influenced by it. I try not to be too overt with it, but that's the way it sounds right to me.

"And people point out Beatle influences in things that I didn't even notice sometimes. I played 'The Last DJ' for someone and they said, 'Oh, wow, it sounds like The Beatles.'

"And I thought: 'Gee, I never even thought that.' But, hey, if someone's telling me I sound like The Beatles, I'm very flattered. It's not easy to sound like The Beatles. So, yeah, I'm certainly influenced by The Beatles and that whole '60s period of music. That's what I grew up on."

Apparently there's going to be concert in London on Nov. 29, to commemorate the first anniversary of George Harrison's death, which Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney are putting together. I was wondering if you've been contacted about participating in that?

PETTY: "Yeah, I'm going. I'll be there. We're going to all do George's stuff. It's going to just be music that George liked. And I talked with Eric last week, and he had a few songs that he wanted me to work up of George's and see how they went. So I'm going to do that and see how it goes."

Is there a particular song that, maybe from your friendship with him, you knew was dear to George that most people might not think of?

PETTY: "Of his? He wasn't the kind of person that really dug what he did that much. I think he always thought that of his stuff. (He'd say:) 'Aghhh, it's alright, but this is the real stuff." So there are so many songs that he liked, but I can't think of one in particular. I know he used to play, of my songs, he used to play 'You're So Bad.' He used to sit around my house playing that on the guitar and singing it a lot. He liked that song quite a bit.

"Ah, George, you know I miss him."

Q: What were the songs that Clapton asked you to consider playing at the Albert Hall show?

PETTY: "He thought I could do 'Isn't It a Pity?' -- I'll try to remember them all -- 'Taxman,' and 'If I Needed Someone.' I think those were the ones; I wrote them down."

Q: And I take it that all of you are playing together as one band?

PETTY: "Yeah, there's gonna be, I think Eric's got a band together that's going to be the basic band, because it's just too much to change over (between songs) with band after band after band. Everyone's gonna just augment that core group, so I'll probably take Mike (Campbell) and maybe Scott Thurston (from the Heartbreakers)."

Q: Is the concert going to be a benefit?

PETTY: "Olivia Harrison talked to me about this a long time ago, and the idea was just to remember George, just a tribute, as they say. Just a nice thing. We all -- George was just a really special person. And not just because he was a Beatle or whatever, but just a really, really special person. And I think he should be saluted once a year."

Q: Is it a one-night-only thing?

PETTY: "I think it's one night, as far as I know, at the Albert Hall. It's near the end of November."

Given what a fan you are of The Beatles and George's solo work, can we assume this isn't going to take a whole lot of work -- that you probably know these songs in your DNA?

PETTY: "I know them pretty well. I do have to sit down and brush up on them. But, yeah, I know them basically."

The concert will be filmed for a TV special to air in early 2003

I just got back from a killer Bob Dylan show at Madison Square Garden. After playing "Blowing In The Wind" and "All Along The Watchtower" Bob and the band came out for another encore. Bob said that he was going to be unable to attend the George Harrison tribute concert and that George was a "good good buddy". He said he wanted to dedicate a song to George's memory and then played a perfect version of "Something". I got goosebumps!

Olivia Harrison was quoted by the Mail On Sunday (no link) as being "extremely disappointed" that tickets for the tribute concert were being sold on the black market. "This completely goes against the spirit in which this celebration was conceived," she told the paper.

I was lucky enough to see Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers in concert last evening here in Austin, and they did a magnificent cover of 'Isn't It a Pity', Mike campbell doing a wicked slide part to duplicate the strings on the original. It was incredible, and earned a standing ovation. If this is a preview, the George tribute show in London will be truly unforgettable!

Last night (11/23), Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers played "Isn't It A Pity" again at their concert in Inglewood, CA. Like the reports from its debut in Austin indicated, it sounded fantastic. Tom mentioned they were flying today to London to prepare for the tribute show. He also said something to the effect that George was probably watching over them.
