Brian Wilson Honored by BMI

Beach Boy to be saluted at publishing company's annual dinner

Brian Wilson will be honored with the 2004 BMI Icon Award at the 52nd annual BMI Pop Awards dinner. The event is scheduled for May 11th at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles, and Wilson will be saluted along with the songwriters and publishers of the most performed pop and rock songs of 2003.
Past Icon Award winners include the Motown songwriting team of Holland/Dozier/Holland, James Brown, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Isaac Hayes, Dolly Parton and Little Richard.

"I was so thrilled to hear that I've been chosen to receive the BMI Icon award, especially as so many of my all-time favorite songwriters have previously received this honor," says Wilson. "I still have a rock & roll heart, so to be included with a list of all-time greats that includes my heroes like Chuck Berry and Little Richard is unbelievable."

Founded in 1939, BMI is a U.S. performing rights organization that represents nearly 300,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers.

Keith Badman's next book will be on the Beach Boys. Here's some info on the book from the author:

"The title of the book is 'The Beach Boys - The Definitive Diary Of America's Greatest Band, On Stage And In The Studio'. Focusing strongly on the years between 1961 and 1976, the book will contain approximately 384 pages and feature approximately 250,000 words. In a day-by-day style, practically every television and studio recording will be featured, along with a listing of over 1,000 Beach Boys concert appearances. Rarely seen and previously unpublished Beach Boys photographs and studio log sheets round off this book, which is released on July 4. An exclusive message from Brian Wilson himself graces the front cover."

Brian Wilson Preps New Album, Gives Advice To Ducks

He’s not exactly known as the most articulate musician in the biz, but Brian Wilson has been hired to do some voiceover work.

According to Billboard.com, Wilson will appear on an upcoming episode of Duck Dodgers, which is essentially a Donald Duck vs. Marvin The Martian kind of affair. Wilson will play an animated version of himself — we’re not sure if he’ll be human or duckified. The cartoon Wilson will act as a spiritual adviser to the title character, as played by Donald Duck. The show airs in Canada on Teletoon.

How did the former Beach Boy hook up with the Duck Dodgers people? No, they didn’t hunt him down after catching a rerun of the Beach Boys episode of Full House (you know, the one where Uncle Jesse joins the band on stage for a rendition of "Kokomo"), it was actually Wilson’s people who came up with the idea. Billboard reports that the people behind Wilson’s publishing company approached the Duck Dodgers staff, who quickly whipped up a Wilson-centred script.

In addition to his acting talents, Wilson also contributed a song to the cartoon’s soundtrack. The track, "Believe In Yourself," which was inspired by the good times Wilson had in the sound booth, plays several times throughout the episode.

In addition to the cartoon action, Wilson has also been hard at work on the musical front. His upcoming solo album, Gettin' In Over My Head, will hit stores on June 22.

37 years on, Brian Wilson to release Smile

Brian Wilson is to release an all new recording of the lost Beach Boys album Smile.

It follows his acclaimed UK concerts where the music was performed in full for the first time.

Smile was to have been Wilson's "teenage symphony to God," designed to better The Beatles and surpass his own Pet Sounds.

But it was put on hold as the rest of the Beach Boys were uncomfortable with its avant garde nature and ambitious structure.

Wilson and lyricist Van Dyke Parks, who collaborated on the original Smile sessions in 1966-67, listened together to the 37-year-old tapes in November last year.

Now, an all-new studio recording of Smile will be made available by Nonesuch Records on September 27.

The album will be produced by Wilson and will feature the ten-member band that has supported him on tour over the past five years, and will also feature The Stockholm Strings and Horns.

The ex-Beach Boy is currently working on the new version of the record at the Sunset Sound studio in LA.

Wilson will also release another studio album on June 21. Gettin In Over My Head features all new material including collaborations with Elton John, Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney.

Nonesuch To Release Legendary 'Smile' Album

Nearly four decades after it was initially slated for release on Capitol, Brian Wilson's "lost" Beach Boys masterpiece "SMiLE" will finally be heard by the record-buying public. A newly recorded version of the album is to be released Sept. 28 worldwide by Nonesuch Records.

The new "SMiLE" was produced by Wilson and features the pop icon's 10-member touring band along with the Stockholm Strings and Horns ensemble. Wilson first revisited the project in November 2003 along with lyricist Van Dyke Parks and keyboardist Darian Sahanaja, reviewing the original 37-year-old tapes with the intent to prepare a version of the album for live performance.

The material was debuted Feb. 20 live at London's Royal Festival Hall and played to audiences on a brief European tour. Following the album's release, Wilson plans to take the performance on the road in the United States this fall.

The reworked "SMiLE" features recreations of songs and musical motifs first recorded in 1966-1967, as Wilson attempted to produce a highly ambitious follow-up to the Beach Boys' orchestral pop classic "Pet Sounds." The project was famously abandoned in 1967 after it already appeared on a Capitol release schedule. Instead, the group released the patchwork album "Smiley Smile" later that year.

Parks, who collaborated with Wilson on the original "SMiLE" sessions, also co-wrote new material with Wilson to complete the album for performance and release.

As previously reported, Wilson will release a new solo studio album, "Gettin' in Over My Head," June 22 via Rhino.

THE SOUTH BANK SHOW!THE SOUTH BANK SHOW!

BEACH BOYS star BRIAN WILSON heads the list of performers at the HEROES & VILLAINS festival on LONDON's SOUTH BANK later this year.

The singer premiered his lost classic 'Smile' in the UK earlier this year to huge acclaim, watched by the likes of Paul McCartney, Roger Daltrey and Paul Weller. The concept album was originally intended for release in 1967, around the same time The Beatles put out 'Sgt Pepper'. However, Wilson had a breakdown and the album was never finished, giving it almost mythical status amongst fans.

As previously announced on NME.COM, the legend is to perform a residency at London's Royal Festival Hall, his fourth since early 2002. The originally announced four-night run has now been extended to six for Heroes & Villians.

The event, taking place between July 24 and August 7, aims to showcase artists who have "consistently dedicated themselves to an area of song-writing and music production that is both up-close personal and outrageously ambitious".

Other artists performing include French duo Air, cult songwriter Lee Hazlewood and a two-night stint from Badly Drawn Boy.

The shows are :

Brian Wilson (24, 25, 27, 28, 30, 31)
Spiritualized/Pere Ubu/David Viner (August 1)
Air (3)
Lee Hazlewood & Morcheeba (4)
Badly Drawn Boy (6/7)

Brian Wilson To Smile In SeptemberBrian Wilson To Smile In September

Brian Wilson's masterpiece Smile will finally be released in September, 37 years after it was written.

The Beach Boys legend had planned to release the album as the follow-up to 1966's Pet Sounds but shelved the project after The Beatles released 'Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band'. The irony was that Sgt Pepper was inspired by Pet Sounds in the first place.

The forthcoming album, to be released by Nonesuch Records, will be a new studio recording. Wilson is currently completing the album at a studio in Los Angeles.

The first public performance of Smile took place at the Royal Albert Hall in London on February 20, 2004.

Wilson plans to tour Smile in the USA later this year.

WILSON SMILES AGAIN

BEACH BOYS star BRIAN WILSON has returned to the venue where he played the 'lost' album 'SMILE' for the first time ever.

The singer, who first played 'Smile' at the London Royal Festival Hall earlier this year (February 20), was back at the venue last night (July 24) to open a new residency at the Heroes & Villains festival.

Like previous shows the gig is split into two sections. Opening with a fifteen minute acoustic set, a 'Greatest Hits' show follows where Wilson is backed by an 18-piece band.

After a short interval Wilson then returned to the stage where 'Smile' was played in full.

The concept album was originally intended for release in 1967, around the same time The Beatles put out 'Sgt Pepper'. However, Wilson had a breakdown and the album was never finished, giving it almost mythical status amongst fans.

The Heroes & Villains series runs until next month.

Привет!

Моя любимая песня Beach Boys - Breakaway. Так же как у Hollies есть великие вещи, не уступающие песням Beatles - He ain't heavy, he's my brother и I Can't Tell The Bottom from The Top, так и эта вещь прекрасна. У Бич Бойз есть сборник 20 Greatest, там все что я люблю у них.

A record crowd rocks at Harris Park with the classic summer band.
London Free Press

Harris Park, London Monday, August 2, 2004

The Beach Boys made a little fun, fun, fun history at the 2004 London Balloon Festival yesterday afternoon.

The ageless California pop rockers, led by original Beach Boy Mike Love, pulled a crowd estimated at 40,000 to 50,000 fans to a jammed Harris Park and any comfortable listening spot around it.

The concert was free, with admission charged only for selected areas, making a more exact count impossible. Balloon festival president Barry McGonigle's estimate of the crowd numbers at the start of the Beach Boys' set backed up the festival's hopes of attracting the biggest crowd in Harris Park's history.

The Beach Boys put up some impressive numbers of their own. By the time they finished their three-hit encore with Fun, Fun, Fun -- one of their 1960s classics and the touring band's anthem -- Love and the band had played almost 40 songs. Their set was around the two-hour mark, non-stop.

A London band, the Caution Donkeys, opened the show.

Car songs and surfing hits by the dozens flowed in and out of Love's and sidekick Bruce Johnston's jokes about hip-replacement taking over from hip-hop, their old tour mate John Cougar Mellencamp, who once stomped off a London show headlined by the Beach Boys, and boy band singer Justin Timberlake -- "Justin Timberwolf or whatever he's called."

Classics such as God Only Knows, Wouldn't It Be Nice, In My Room and Good Vibrations also received their tour-band best from Love and company, who should be commended for celebrating a big sweep of the Beach Boys' legacy.

Love shares that legacy with his cousin and frequent co-writer in the band's glory days, Brian Wilson. For almost every happy hit Love loves to sing, there is an undertow of anxiety and even despair -- the Wilson version of life on the beach.

Wilson is touring separately and it would be great to hear his take on many of these same songs and his own music.

Love's touring band includes former UWO music student Tim Bonhomme, who spent a year in London before returning to his hometown Sudbury and eventually continuing his studies in California.

A beautiful version of God Only Knows, a 1960s ballad that is their best song, was dedicated to Wilson's late brothers, Dennis and Carl Wilson, who were part of the band's most famous lineup.

That moment of rock history was lost on many. One of the perils of reviewing a free concert is that hundreds in the crowd feel free to chat during such quiet interludes.

It is also true that the crowd diminished steadily as the Beach Boys played on. That is not a criticism of the concert, but a reflection of what it's like to listen at the back of a big crowd. Other fans, closer to the stage, were dancing and singing along from start to finish.

A walk around the park and across the Thames River found the sound came and went. There were places across the Thames where Love's red Canadian Olympic cap wasn't even a dot through the trees, but the harmonies sounded splendid.

At various points in the park, far from the stage at the north end, a Beach Boy sighting and a surf music sound were rare. That's always going to be a fact at a free, mass-audience event.

London Beefeaters' football coach Rob Bloomfield, a super fan and friend of the band, taking in his 200th Beach Boy concert, announced yesterday's crowd as being the biggest at a music event in London's history. The band played Still Cruisin' for Bloomfield.

Later, a happy Bloomfield rated yesterday's concert as being right up with the best he's heard from his friends. That would qualify as history, too.

Brian Wilson to 'Smile' on American Audiences
Thu Aug 5

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Former Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson will bring his long-awaited "Smile" live performances to the North America this fall, after debuting the "lost masterpiece" in concert in the United Kingdom and Europe earlier this year.

The tour will kick off Sept. 30 at the Orpheum Theater in Minneapolis, with 21 dates announced so far.

Shows are scheduled through Nov. 2 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and include a two-night stand at New York's famed Carnegie Hall.

A re-recorded version of the album will be released Sept. 28 on Nonesuch Records. "Smile" was intended as the follow-up to the Beach Boys' classic 1966 album "Pet Sounds," but the sessions were cut short and the project abandoned. It has since grown in cult status as one of rock's most notorious "lost" albums.

In concert, Wilson performs the reconstituted album in its entirety with his 10-piece band and a strings-and-brass ensemble. He'll also perform a separate set of Beach Boys and solo tunes, including material from his most recent solo album "Gettin' in Over My Head" (Rhino).

Wilson is also scheduled to appear Aug. 19 on CNN's "Larry King Live."

Beach Boys Musical Coming to Broadway Beach Boys Musical Coming to Broadway
Mon Aug 9

NEW YORK - Surf's up! "Good Vibrations," a new musical using more than 30 Beach Boys songs, will open on Broadway in January.

The show, which does not tell the story of the famous '60s singing group, will begin preview performances in early December at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre. An opening date will be announced shortly.

"Good Vibrations" has a book by Richard Dresser and concerns a group of small-town teenagers who come to Southern California. It will be directed and choreographed by John Carrafa, who created the dance sequences for "Urinetown" and the Vanessa Williams revival of "Into the Woods."

Among the songs expected to be used in the show are such Beach Boys classics as "Good Vibrations," "Fun, Fun, Fun," "California Girls," "Help Me, Rhonda," "Surf City," "Surfer Girl" and "Surfin' Safari."

The show had a recent workshop production at New York Stage & Film, a summer festival located on the campus of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Pickin' up bad vibrations
There's not much fun, fun, fun as The Beach Boys biggest tune of late seems to be suin' U.S.A.
Toronto Sun

The Beach Boys still get around, despite years of bickering and lawsuits. Now consisting of singer Mike Love and guitarist Bruce Johnston, they are at Casino Rama tonight.

When they started out in the early '60s, The Beach Boys were on a par with The Beatles in terms of hit albums and singles such as Good Vibrations, Fun, Fun, Fun and California Girls.

While the Fab Four had their share of personality differences before they broke up in 1970, theirs pale in comparison to the recent messy history of The Beach Boys. The band's discography is only rivaled by their recent lawsuit-ography.

The band's first tragedy -- aside from Brian Wilson's breakdown and years of being a recluse -- was the passing of drummer Dennis Wilson in 1983. In 1994 Love sued Brian Wilson over royalties from some 79 songs Love claimed to have co-written with him. Love prevailed in that dispute.

In 1998, guitarist Carl Wilson passed away from lung cancer. Since that time, Love and guitarist and singer Al Jardine have been involved in a number of lawsuits over usage of The Beach Boys name and trademark. Last October, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Jardine's appeal against Brother Records -- the owner of the trademark -- regarding the dispute.

It all makes for a rather sad ending for such an important group.

"Well, I'm sure it hasn't helped it any," Mike Love says on the phone before boarding an airplane Tuesday afternoon. "But with Brian travelling and doing shows, and me travelling with Bruce and doing The Beach Boys, there are a lot of positive things going on out there.

"Ultimately, the lasting nature of the songs is pretty phenomenal. When the lights go down and the show starts, people are curious to see if we sound like we did on the record. The average person going to Casino Rama probably has other things in life that they're more concerned about" than the lawsuits.

Love says he's happy to see Brian Wilson on the road again. Wilson will begin a North American tour later this year that will feature a reworked version of SMiLE, an album that was considered "lost" after being scrapped following sessions in 1966 and 1967. Wilson is set to perform at Toronto's Massey Hall on Oct. 6.

Love, who was against the album's release 37 years ago, says he hasn't heard the new version yet.

"When I was asked by Rolling Stone what I hope the album would do, I said, 'Well I hope it creates smiles all around,' " he says with a laugh. "But I haven't heard anything so I wouldn't know what to say to that."

Another thing he hasn't heard about is the upcoming Broadway production, Good Vibrations. And he also says he hasn't heard Wilson's new studio album Gettin' In Over My Head, featuring collaborations with Paul MacCartney, Eric Clapton and Elton John.

"It's nice to see Brian getting busy. He's doing something productive. Brian and I wrote some very big hits together and we're able to perform them still to this day. That's kind of a miracle in itself.

"I had to sue Brian nominally because the credits are with him. That wasn't because of Brian, but the attorney that was advising him wrongly. Even on the witness stand he was saying, 'Yeah, he (Love) wrote that.' It was pretty classic."

Love says he would enjoy working with Wilson again, but doesn't see that happening in the near future. There's a better chance of that happening than with Jardine though.

"Well, when Al stops suing us we can talk, but with Brian, yeah!" Love says.

"I'm always up for writing with Brian because he and I go back so far and know each other so well. If you look at the success of The Beach Boys' music and the songs we co-wrote that are still being played, it would indicate that there's chemistry there. That's the kind of chemistry that doesn't go away with time."

Showtime Airing Beach Boys' 'Smile' Showtime Airing Beach Boys' 'Smile'
Thu Aug 19

LOS ANGELES - "Smile," the Brian Wilson album that was famously unheard by the public for nearly 40 years, will be the subject of a Showtime documentary.

"Beautiful Dreamer: Brian Wilson and the Story of Smile" is in production and will debut Oct. 5 on Showtime, the channel announced this week.

The film will include interviews with Wilson, the Beach Boys' creative genius, and footage of February's triumphant "Smile" debut concert in London.

"'Smile' is the most important piece of music that I ever composed, and I'm thrilled that Showtime feels so strongly about it that they are going to let me tell the story of 'Smile' in this film," Wilson said in a release.

"Smile" was to follow the Beach Boys' groundbreaking 1966 album "Pet Sounds." After carefully crafting the album's multilayered sound, Wilson shelved it shortly before its scheduled 1967 release. He said the songs were "not commercial."

Over the years, "Smile" gained a reputation among fans as the band's lost masterpiece and was hailed by critics at its London debut.

Wilson speaks out about feud with Love
25/09/2004

Former Beach Boy Brian Wilson still refuses to speak to his cousin and ex-bandmate Mike Love - because of his "attitude" and dislike of Wilson's music.

The singer, 62, fell out with his fellow group member during the initial recording of legendary lost album Smile during the mid-1960s, when Love commented it "was a whole album of Brian's madness".

Wilson says: "I don't speak to him and I don't even like Mike to speak to. I don't like his attitude and the way he talks to me.

"He doesn't like what I'm into and the music that I'm making. So hell to him."

Smile has finally been completed and is being released this month.
