Gallagher dismayed by Anastasia comparison

Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher furiously abandoned a meeting with a Sony executive when the record company man compared him to pop singer Anastasia.

The Don't Look Back In Anger star was already offended by the American businessman's attempts to make him speed up the recording of upcoming album Don't Believe The Truth, and was left with no option other than to turn his back on the executive when he went one step too far.

Gallagher recalls: "We go to a posh restaurant. He's kind of asking, 'Why can we not get this record done?'

"And I'm telling him how it doesn't sound right, and how I'm going to write more songs, and he says: 'You know who you sound like? Right now, just sitting there? Just talking about your grievances and worries about the record? Do you know who you sound like?'

"Well, I'm scrolling through the Sony acts thinking, 'Is he going to say (Bob) Dylan? I'll go as low as Bruce Springsteen…' Anyway, I go: 'Who?' He says: 'Anastasia!' It didn't compute for a moment. Again I went: 'Who?' And there it was again: 'Anastasia.'"

Taken aback by the executive's lack of tact, Gallagher took drastic measures. He continues: "So I poured another glass of wine, necked it in one, looked at him and said: 'I've got to f***ing go now, cos I've just broken out in a rash.' As I was looking at him I thought: 'You will never see my face again, and I will never lay eyes on you. Whoever you f***ing are, and whatever your f***ing name is, this is where it finishes for me and you.'

"I walk off, down Knightsbridge, collar up, p**sing down with rain. Just when it can't get worse, a black cab pulls up and goes: 'All right Liam (his brother and Oasis frontman)?'"

BIG UK ACTS HEAD FOR CITY LIMITS

OASIS, COLDPLAY and FRANZ FERDINAND are all set to join the same festival bill.
Having established itself as the new band proving ground with South By Southwest, Texan state capital Austin is now hosting more established stars with the Austin City Limits Festival.
Taking place between September 23 and 25 at Austin’s Zilker Park, the event will feature over 150 acts.

DON'T BELIEVE THE UNCOUTH!

Rock’s new school have hit back at OASIS after their controversial NME cover story.

In our recent interview with the band, who are on the comeback trail with new album ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’, the Gallagher brothers rubbished the vast majority of Britpop’s next generation.

Talking about Keane, Noel said: “Traditionally speaking, the three biggest twats in any band are the singer, the keyboardist and the drummer. I don’t need to say anything else.”

But Keane pianist Tim Rice-Oxley slammed Noel, telling NME.COM: “The biggest twats in a band? We don’t really care. I think he’s a c*** to be honest. He was in a band that was very brilliant in the mid-nineties and now they’re just not important anymore. No-one really cares.”

Responding to Liam’s diss that they looked like “a band off University Challenge,” Bloc Party guitarist Russell Lissack told NME.COM: “I used to buy NME in the nineties when Oasis were in their prime and the reason I bought it was ‘cos Liam Gallagher would say something stupid and funny every week. However, I thought that was really poor, that was the same thing he said about Travis and Coldplay. I’m throwing down the gauntlet because we don’t hate Oasis but I want a nice insult.”

However, Kaiser Chiefs singer Ricky Wilson wasn’t so phased to be branded “a bad Blur” who “wear make-up”, beaming: “I was chuffed to bits. To even occupy space in Liam’s mind so he’d open his mouth about us is a compliment. He had a go for me wearing make-up, but the only reason I ever wore make-up was to look like him. It’s hard to get that dark, swarthy look in your eyes when you’re a ginger.”

Liam Gallagher To Make Movie Acting Debut?

Reports are claiming that Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher is to make his big screen acting debut alongside Robert Carlyle in a new gangster film entitled ‘The Apprentice’.

The Ј14 million movie will star starring 'Trainspotting' and 'Full Monty' actor Robert Carlyle and will tell the real-life story of convicted Glaswegian gun-runner Paul Ferris. The film is inspired by his 2001 biography ‘The Ferris Conspiracy’.

Its being alleged that the film’s producers are currently in talks with Gallagher to play the part of a gangland boss - Mr Big Paul Massey - who is currently serving 14 years for a stabbing in 1999.

Reg McKay who co-wrote ‘The Ferris Conspiracy’ has confirmed the Oasis singer is being considered for the role, "Yes, Liam has expressed interest in the part,” the writer is quoted by Female First as saying, “Paul Massey is a big fan of Liam and thinks he will be brilliant."

Robert Carlyle is a friend of the Gallaghers and appeared in the video for their single ‘Little By Little’ back in July 2003.

Oasis get seventh UK number one

Oasis have returned to the top of the UK singles chart with Lyla, ending Akon's two-week reign at number one.

The song, taken from their new album Don't Believe the Truth, marks the rock group's seventh UK number one single.

Black Eyed Peas entered the chart at three with Don't Phunk With My Heart, while Jennifer Lopez's Hold You Down debuted at six.

Faithless' Greatest Hits compilation tops the UK album chart on its first week of release.

Numbers two and three were also new entries - Mezmerize from metal band System of a Down, and Magic Time by veteran performer Van Morrison.

Oasis last topped the singles chart in April 2002 with The Hindu Times.

Their other number ones include Some Might Say in May 1995 and Don't Look Back in Anger in March 1996.

Their new album is released later this month ahead of their summer festival and stadium dates.

The other new entries in the Top 10 singles were Owner of a Lonely Heart by Max Graham vs Yes at nine, and the Kaiser Chiefs' Everyday I Love You Less and Less at ten.

OASIS have been crowned the most successful act of the last decade in the UK.

Following the success of ’Lyla’, which topped the charts yesterday, the Book of British Hit Singles & Albums have announced the band have beaten the likes of Robbie Williams, Madonna, Britney Spears, Eminem and U2 to the accolade.

The band have 766 weeks on the Official UK singles and albums charts.

The group release their sixth album, ’Don’t Believe The Truth’ on May 30.

Since Oasis has an instantly identifiable, seemingly simple signature sound — gigantic, lumbering, melodic, and inevitable, as if their songs have always existed and always will — it can be hard to pinpoint what separates a great Oasis song from a merely mediocre tune. It could be anything from overblown production to a diminished swagger, or it could be a self-satisfied laziness in the songwriting, or a panicky attempt to update their defiantly classicist pop with an electronic shine. All of these problems plagued the group's records since their blockbuster 1995 blockbuster second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, and while none of the three albums that followed were outright bad, by 2002's Heathen Chemistry it seemed that even Noel and Liam Gallagher had lost sight of what made Oasis great. While that record had its moments, it often seemed generic, suggesting that the group had painted itself into a corner, not knowing where to go next. Surely, all the reports from the recording of their long-gestating sixth album suggested a faint air of desperation. First, the electronica duo Death in Vegas was brought in as producers, bringing to mind the band's awkward attempts at electronica fusion on Be Here Now and Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, but those recordings were scrapped, and then their second drummer, Alan White, left only to be replaced by Zak Starkey, the son of Ringo Starr, suggesting that the Gallaghers were coming perilously close to being swallowed by their perennial Beatles fixation.

All of which makes the resulting album, Don't Believe the Truth, a real shock. It's confident, muscular, uncluttered, tight, and tuneful in a way Oasis haven't been since Morning Glory. It doesn't feel labored nor does it sound as if they're deliberately trying to recreate past glories. Instead, it sounds like they've remembered what they love about rock & roll and why they make music. They sound reinvigorated, which is perhaps appropriate, because Don't Believe the Truth finds Oasis to be quite a different band than it was a decade ago. Surely, Noel is still the first among equals, writing the majority of the songs here and providing the musical direction that the rest follow, but his brother Liam, bassist Andy Bell, and guitarist Gem Archer are now full and equal partners, and the band is the better for it. Where Noel struggled to fill the post-Morning Glory albums with passable album tracks (having squandered his backlog of great songs on B-sides), he's now happy to have Bell and Archer write Noel soundalikes that are sturdier than the filler he's created over the last five years. These likeable tunes are given soul and fire by Liam, who not only reclaims his crown as the best singer in rock on this album, but comes into his own as a songwriter. He had written good songs before, but here he holds his own with his brother, writing lively, hooky, memorable songs with "Love Like a Bomb," "The Meaning of Soul," and "Guess God Thinks I'm Abel," which are as good as anything Noel has written for the album. Which is not an aspersion on Noel, who has a set of five songs that cut for cut are his strongest and liveliest in years. Whether it's the insistent stomp of "Mucky Fingers" or the Kinks-styled romp of "The Importance of Being Idle," these songs are so good it makes sense that Noel has kept them for himself, singing four of the five tunes himself (including the soaring closing duet "Let There Be Love," the brothers' best joint vocal since "Acquiesce"). But the key to this new incarnation of Oasis is that this move by Noel doesn't seem like he's hoarding his best numbers, or a way to instigate sibling rivalry with Liam. Instead, it emphasizes that Oasis is now a genuine band, a group of personalities that form together to form one gang of charming rogues. Apart from the tremendous, rambling "Lyla" that channels the spirit of the Faces and the occasional ramshackle echo of Beggars Banquet, there's not much musically different here than other Oasis albums — it's still a blend of British Invasion, the Jam, and the Smiths, all turned to 11 — but their stubborn fondness of classic British guitar pop is one of the things that makes Oasis great and lovable. And, of course, it's also what makes it hard to discern exactly what separates good from great Oasis, but all the little details here, from the consistent songwriting to the loose, comfortable arrangements and the return of their trademark bravado makes Don't Believe the Truth the closest Oasis has been to great since the summer of Britpop, when they were the biggest and best band in the world.

Раздутые аранжировки, ленивое, полное снисходительности к самим себе сочинительство, панические попытки освежить вызывающе консервативный гитарный саунд электронным блеском – все это портило альбомы группы, вышедшие после блокбастера 95-го года (What's The Story) Morning Glory? И хотя ни один из этих альбомов не был однозначно плох, после Heathen Chemistry казалось, что даже сами Ноэль и Лайам не в состоянии понять, что же делало их в свое время столь впечатляющим явлением. Да и от вестей о записи нового долго-вынашиваемого альбома веяло отчаянием. Сначала в продюсеры был взят электронный дуэт Death In Vegas, что приводило на ум неуклюжие попытки электронных вливаний в Be Here Now и Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants. Песни хороши настолько, что создается впчатление, будто Ноэль нарочно оставил их себе, сам исполнив четыре из пяти, включая возвышенную Let There Be Love, вокальный дуэт братьев в которой - лучший со времен Asquisce. Oasis hit is named 'best UK song'

The Oasis song Wonderwall has beaten tracks by The Beatles and Led Zeppelin to be named the best British song of all time in a radio listeners' poll.
The 1995 song topped the Virgin Radio poll of more than 8,300 listeners.

"It is the perfect song to stick your arm around your mate and sing out at the top of your voice after a few beers," said DJ Pete Mitchell.

Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody was in second place with Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven third.

Despite not taking the top spot Queen and the Beatles notched up the most entries in Virgin Radio's top 100, scoring eight entries each.

The Rolling Stones and David Bowie had six entries each but new band Coldplay, who had their first chart single in 2000, had five tracks in the top 100.

The male-dominated chart featured only one song by a female solo artist - Kate Bush at number 16 with Wuthering Heights.

Alison Moyet is included as half of electropop duo Yazoo, whose 1982 hit Only You is at number 73 and Annie Lennox appears in The Eurythmics, whose 1983 hit Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) is at number 93.

Wonderwall topped the Virgin Radio chart despite failing to top the UK singles chart on its release, being kept in second place by Michael Jackson's Earth Song.

Nevertheless Oasis secured their seventh UK number one last week, topping the chart with latest single Lyla before being ousted after one week by The Crazy Frog's ringtone hit Axel F.

STARKEY PLAYS CEREAL BOX FOR OASIS

OASIS' drummer ZAK STARKEY discovered an unusual new instrument to appear on the band's new album DON'T BELIEVE THE TRUTH - an empty cereal box.

Starkey, the son of former BEATLE RINGO STARR, has played with the LILA rockers since the band sacked their drummer ALAN WHITE last year (04).

The talented drummer tapped out the rhythm on a cardboard box for the sixth track on the new record, titled THE MEANING OF SOUL - a song penned by LIAM GALLAGHER.

Gallagher says, "The drums sounded a bit BUDDY HOLLY at first.

"There was this box of cereal lying round in the studio and Zak started hitting that and it sounded mega."

'Don't Believe The Truth' is a big stinking pile of rubbish.

Fact: Oasis have not made a good record for almost ten years. TEN YEARS. That's a very long time to be mediocre.
Fact: Oasis will never again make a great record. Why? Because, quite simply, they're not good enough. Lazy, disinterested, musically retroactive and professionally bankrupt.

Fact: 'Don't Believe The Truth' is a big stinking pile of rubbish.

Audio mediocrity wafts out of the stereo from the start; 'Turn Up The Sun' is a terrible dirge, while 'Mucky Fingers' is a ridiculous pastiche of the Velvet Underground that gets its name all mixed up - a Rolling Stones homaging title but a Lou Reed-ripping song. 'Lyla' we've all heard and ignored, whilst 'Love Like A Bomb' is one of those cringing Liam Gallagher efforts that proves why he should stick to croaking rather than composing sickly acoustic ballads; "Yer love's like a bomb / yer blowing my mind / yer turning me on." Honestly. Another Liam composition, Acoustic rocker (really) 'The Meaning Of Soul' is much better, but in the world of Oasis anthems, it ranks a little under halfway. His final effort, the barefaced Kinks steal of 'Guess God Thinks Im Abel' oozes sterility as does the humdrum take on 'regular life' that is 'Part Of The Queue', which is another Kinks-ian world view married to thrashed acoustics ala Oasis b-sides circa 1994.

Those of you worried that Noel Gallagher only offers less than half the songs; don't worry - his contributions are amongst the worst. On top of the aforementioned 'Lyla', 'Part Of The Queue' and 'Mucky Fingers', there's the benign 'Importance Of Being Idle' and album closer, the typically overwrought 'Let There Be Love' a psuedo-blustery anthem which attempts to be understated but merely succeeds in sounding shallow and thin.

Oddly, it's Andy Bell (he of Hurricane #1, don't forget) who offers one of the better songs; 'Keep The Dream Alive' is the sort of towering stadium crooner that they should be able to knock off in their sleep after all these years but don't seem able to anymore. That's not to say that it's particularly good, please note. Possibly, it's best not to mention Gem's effort.

Go to your outdoor shindigs, hear the hits, have fun. Just don't pretend to yourself that Oasis are moving foward. There's nothing wrong with staying afloat if that's the best that you can do. And that is the best that Oasis can do.

А у меня пока пластинки нет. Надо сказать откровения и не жду)) Но послушать - ээээ Как минимум забавно. Я вот первые два альбома переслушиваю время от времени. И то есть гуд, это как минимум.

Рецензия же последняя - вполне станадартна. Такую можно написать на любой их альбом. Говорить о Галлахерах - это ведь "приятный моветон" такой: если ты слушал группу Кинкс, или просто мало-мальски знаком с 60's - ты можешь даже не слушать Oasis, а просто в свое удовольствие писать такие вот рецензии)) Это свидетельствует, как минмимум о том, что у Вас есть Вкус, с большой буквы 'В'))

Но утверждение о том, что Lyla мы все слышали и проигнорировали, как-то очень уж субъективно звучит))

А с чем именно не можете не согласиться?

Альбом отличный!! Также ругали каждый альбом Oasis, типа они не творят ничего нового и т.п., ну и не надо, зато они пока играют лучшую в мире музыку. В альбоме, по моему, только две средненьких трека: Mucky Fingers и Meaning of Soul. Остальные - отличные песни, хотя среди них и нет хита равной Live Forever, например. Еще этот альбом наверно самый "битловский" из всех. Для меня это только плюс. В общем мне альбом очень нравится!

"Don't Believe The Truth," Oasis

Their sound is still a bit bombastic, operatic even at times, but Oasis is so seasoned and full of heart the British band pulls off their sixth album "Don't Believe The Truth" without too many missteps.

Yes, the lads have a tumultuous history and, yes, lead singer Liam Gallagher will likely tweak someone's nose to garner a few headlines in time for this release. But ignore the usual sideshow that is Oasis-the-rock-stars and crank up the speakers. They are, again, worth a listen.

It's smooth sailing once you get past the wall-of-sound monotony of the first two tracks. Who can remember what "Turn up the Sun" is about when all that's ringing in your ears is the repetitive refrain "Love one another?" The chorus rings a tad disingenuous, even from the kinder-and-gentler Oasis.

Things pick up quickly with the beautiful track "Lyla." "I waited for a thousand years for you to come and blow me out my mind," Liam wails. It's a strong with a marching-paced cadence, sure to have fans arm-and-arm and frothing as the band lands stateside for their tour beginning in mid-June.

Top track honors, however, go to "Let There Be Love," described in the band's press notes as "...a defining moment in Oasis history." It certainly is a departure from the raw braggadocio that we're used to on even the most romantic and heartfelt past offerings from Oasis. The light piano and soft guitar strums don't feel contrived when they're backing one of the best vocalists in rock.

"Don't Believe The Truth" is just as solid for tried-and-true Oasis fans as it is for newcomers.

Не могу не согласиться со следующим:
1) с тем, что Oasis уже давным-давно ничего выдающегося не записывали;
2) с тем, что они больше никогда и не запишут что-либо уровня первых альбомов;
3) с тем, что 1,5 из 5 - самая, пожалуй, объективная оценка этого диска
4) и с тем, что альбом-то этот, по большому счету, фуфло.
И ладно бы они, что называется, топтались на одном месте...нет, так уж получается, что каждая
новая их пластинка оказывается слабее предыдущей.
Для общего развития, конечно, этот альбом послушать стоит, только вот все дело в том, что Oasis
давным-давно перестали быть актуальными, и даже в этом году вышло много гораздо более интересных
пластинок, взять хотя бы тех же Kaiser Chiefs, ну или, на худой конец, - Departure.
Но это, конечно, мое личное мнение.

Да бросьте, на каждом альбоме после Mornig Glory есть по два-три отличных трека)) Что в сумме даст вполне приличный The Best. Чего не выпустят его - непонятно.

Вот тут действительно печальная история. Именно так и мне кажется, да. Потому-то и рецензия с allmusic.com понравилась (4,5, кстати, из 5). Я помню, после Morning Glory Ноэль говорил, что его не устраивает нынешнее состояние дел (мол, не хочется оставаться тем поп-феноменчиком, каким является Oasis, его ближайшая цель - "хотя бы" уровень U2 (да, помнится в интервью Эдж включил тот самый Morning Glory в пару лучших альбомов 95 года. Другой альбом из той пары не помню)) Так что после всего этого шума лично мне интересно новый альбом поп-феноменчика послушать. Хотя исходные limitations - были, как говорится, очевидны.

Своей оценки не имею пока (интересно так беседу вести в самом деле. Вот как послушаю - все сверю))) Устройство этой шкалы и вашего счета - черный ящик, или можете детали сообщить? А то никакой конкретики. Вот почему, к примеру, Lyla кажется фуфлом?

Да ну, я сразу могу сказать, что есть масса других исполнителей, которых можно слушать "для общего развития". Oasis - как раз такой нормальный традишенал рок-н-ролл. Чем и милы. Не менее чем поведением своим)) Помнится на каком-то сингле-би-сайде Лайам сурово так с аудиторией общался: "А сейчас, б*@дь, будет песня с нашего нового сингла, который скоро выйдет. И вы, вашу мать, его купите!" Так примерно)))

Не согласен с тем, что "каждая

Далеко не так. Имеющий уши, как говорится...

Liam Gallagher has been mouthing off yet again...this time he’s having a rant over the not so rock and roll lifestyle of U2.

Apparently the Oasis frontman heard a story about the Irish band that said the band watch videos of their live shows after they come off stage.

Liam said to the Sydney Daily Telegraph: “Wankers. Haven't they got fuck all better to do? I'd rather be out there getting pissed.

"I certainly wouldn't go back after a gig and analyse it. No wonder they're the biggest band in the world: 'Oh Edge, the fourth guitar solo wasn't right tonight'. 'Oh, sorry Bono'.

"If that's what people think rock 'n' roll is ..."

He added: "This is the best job in the world. It's even better when you're the best rock star.

"I'm the best fucking rock 'n' roll singer this country's ever had."
