THE RUTLES FAREWELL TOUR: JUNE, 2005THE RUTLES FAREWELL TOUR: JUNE, 2005

After occasional bouts of 'Rutle Mania' since the film appeared in 1979, band leader Neil Innes (AKA Ron Nasty) has decided that the end of the road has come for the Prefab Four. A short farewell tour begins with two nights at London's 100 Club and ends in Southampton. Last year's barn-storming performance at the Glastonbury Festival introduced theband and their music to a whole new generation of fans.

Support is NEIL INNES & FRIENDS, an excuse for Neil – accompanied by JJ Jones on drums and double-bassist Tom Fry – to play his own music outside of The Rutles. Expect material from the Bonzo Dog days, Monty Python and the solo albums, including the brand new 'Work in Progress'.

Complete tour dates are:
June 2005

Thu 09-LONDON, 100 Club (020 7636 0933) website

THE RUTLES
On January 21, 1959 the Rutles story began at 43 Egg Lane, Liverpool, where Ron Nasty and Dirk McQuickly first bumped into each other. Ron invited Dirk to help him stand up. Dirk, merely an amateur drinker, agreed and on that spot a legend was created, a legend that will last a lunchtime. They were soon to be joined by Stig O'Hara, a guitarist of no fixed hairstyle, but it would be another two years before they found their regular drummer, Barrington Womble, hiding in the van. When they did, they persuaded him to change his name to save time and his haircut to save Brylcreem. He became simply Barry Wom.
The Rutles forged a career in pop that is unparralled. In 1969 they split. In the midst of public and legal wrangling Let It Rot was released as a film, an album, and a lawsuit. It showed the Rutles as never before; tired, unhappy, cross, and just like the rest of the world.
In December 1970 Dirk sued Stig and Nasty, Barry sued Dirk, Nasty sued Stig and Barry, and Stig sued himself accidentally. It was the end of a golden era, and the beginning of another one for lawyers everywhere.
This rare and very exclusive gig charts the career of The Rutles through their songs. Ron Nasty and Barry Wom are proud to present The Rutles in Concert.
Among the (real) musicians performing are:
NEIL INNES, JOHN HALSEY, MARK GRIFFITHS, MICKEY SIMMONDS, KEN THORNTON, JJ JONES.
(By the way, Eric Idle only mimed in the film and he won't be onstage.)

NOTE FOR REALISTS: Neil Innes was the musical leader of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. His talent for melding sharply satiric lyrics with sweetly catchy pop songs in a variety of musical styles was the group's secret weapon. Over the course of their four albums, Innes subtly moved the group's focus from '20s jazz to '60s pop, including gems like the 'I'm the Urban Spaceman' hit. Innes was also the unofficial seventh member of Monty Python, contributing songs to Python's stage show, albums, and films; appearing in every film and in sketches in their final television series. His other TV credits include 'Do Not Adjust Your Set', 'Rutland Weekend television' (out of which The Rutles developed) and 'The Innes Book of Records'. Neil Innes is the man who put the whistle in Eric idle's 'Always Look On the Bright Side Of Life'... as he says today, 'I've suffered for my music... now it's your turn.'

Насколько понимаю - встреча будет, но Rutles не будет.
Что они будут смотреть - решат на месте.

Feuding founders of the Rutles: You can't buy them love
Life imitates art for Idle and Innes, who parodied Beatles' fighting
Originally published June 2, 2005

First came Paul vs. John, which begat Dirk vs. Nasty, which begat Eric vs. Neil.

Monty Python member Eric Idle and comedic songwriter Neil Innes were the close friends and collaborators who created the Rutles three decades ago as a parody of the Beatles -- a very popular band, you may recall, whose bitter breakup left close friends/collaborators Paul McCartney and John Lennon at each others' throats.

In the wake of the recently released straight-to-DVD The Rutles 2: Can't Buy Me Lunch, Idle, who plays McCartney stand-in Dirk McQuickly, and Innes, who plays Lennon stand-in Ron Nasty and wrote the Rutles' dead-on parody songs, are still going at it.

"Neil is a clever and gifted singer and songwriter who's determined to be a failure, and his determination succeeds," volleyed Idle, who wrote and co-directed the 1978 NBC special All You Need Is Cash and made a virtual solo project out of the new sequel.

Innes, who tends to be more restrained in his rhetoric, returned, "I look at it all with some kind of amusement because I'm not showbiz-y, and I think probably Eric is, and if people want to be possessive and don't want to share their toys in the sandpit, I couldn't care less."

British-born humorist Martin Lewis, who has helped produce various projects involving the Beatles and Rutles, couldn't help but notice the parallels.

"The word 'irony' can be certainly applied to the fact that some of the problems that manifested themselves within the Beatles' personal relationships also manifest themselves in the Rutles' personal relationships," Lewis said. "The person who found it most amusing was George Harrison, who said, 'You're supposed to be sending us up. You're not supposed to be emulating us.'"

Idle and Innes go way back. "Too far," Idle said, with a laugh. "And no farther."

All You Need Is Cash put the "mock" into "mockumentary" six years before Rob Reiner's This Is Spinal Tap coined the phrase.

The story would end happily there if not for subsequent attempts to extend, and lay claim to, the Rutles legacy. Innes revisited the music side with the well-received 1996 Rutles album Archaeology, a take-off of the Beatles' Anthology CDs being released at that time.

Idle, who didn't write or perform on either Rutles album (he lip-synched as Dirk), actively opposed Archaeology.

Idle liked the Archaeology songs well enough to include them in Rutles 2, which he made in 2002 and which gathered cobwebs until Warner Bros. released it on DVD this spring.

While Innes was in New York, he had a chance to check out Spamalot, Idle's far more commercially successful plundering of his past that was nominated for 14 Tony Awards, which will be handed out Sunday night. Innes wrote the music for two of its songs, which originally appeared in Holy Grail: "Knights of the Round Table" and "Brave Sir Robin."

"Last year, about April, I said, 'Eric, do you want any more songs for Spamalot?" Innes recalled. "But he said, 'No, it's all done, and Mike Nichols loves it.' So I said, 'Oh, hell.'"

Still, Idle was miffed that Innes missed the show's March premiere, attended by the other living Python members.

Innes noted that he was touring when the show opened but said he enjoyed it when he saw it. And he couldn't help but notice that the monks' chant that he had written for Holy Grail had been replaced.

"Someone changed the monks' chant, which I thought was a little petty, because it must have been all of 50 cents [in royalties] to use it," Innes said.

An Interview with Eric IdleAn Interview with Eric Idle

The Monty Python member discusses his Beatles parody The Rutles, and his latest project, The Rutland Isles

As a member of Monty Python, Eric Idle's spot in the comedy firmament is already well secured.

Add to that the brilliant Beatles parody The Rutles, numerous comedy albums, books, and roles in films ranging from The Adventures of Baron Munchausen to Casper, and what you get is a comic legend who doesn't rest on those already impressive laurels.

His most recent project is Eric Idle Presents The Rutland Isles – a mock travelogue about a mythical island chain that's just been released on CD. Hosted by short-pantsed Brit Nigel Spasm, the audio documentary examines the people, places, and sheep that make up this fascinating group of islands.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IGN FILMFORCE: Would you prefer Mr. Idle? Eric? Sir?

ERIC IDLE: I think Sir Eric would be the best.

IGNFF: Sir Eric it is.

IDLE: Yeah.

IGNFF: Should I say it with a flourish.

IDLE: I think you can say it in whatever accent you want...

IGNFF: My plain American one will probably have to do.

IDLE: It'll do fine.

IGNFF: I wanted to go back in time a bit, in preface to speaking about the Rutland Isles CD, back to Rutland Weekend Television. What exactly was the genesis of that program?

IDLE: A remark of John Cleese's, actually. I paid him a pound for the title. Rutland Weekend Television was a show I did in England – with Neil Innes, actually. It was based on the premise... It was a television station – purported to be the smallest television station in England – and it came on for a half an hour every week, from the smallest county in England, which is Rutland. Which the then-conservative government had bureaucratized out of existence after a thousand years of history.

IGNFF: A very English way of doing things.

IDLE: A very English way. I'm glad to say that the conservative government is now history and the county is back. You can't just rule out English history because it's convenient for you. The people never accepted it, and they put their road signs back up. It's about 54 square miles, I think. But it's very ancient, and has several very major castles and a major public school. So the gag obviously was a small television station, which parodied everything on television – it did its own drama and its own documentaries... Hence The Rutles, which came out of that.

IGNFF: How long did the show run?

IDLE: I did two series, in which I write and did everything. We met in a small upstairs studio at the BBC, but the entire series was £30,000. I think one was six (episodes) and one was seven, and I did a Christmas show, which George Harrison starred on.

IGNFF: Who owns the rights to the series?

IDLE: It's a moot thing, but the BBC owns it. I own the sort of... They can't do it without my permission.

IGNFF: Has there been any discussion regarding a DVD release?

IDLE: No. Not really, no.

IGNFF: It seems to be the one missing part of your career that's not out there... that just isn't available.

IDLE: How 'bout that?

IGNFF: I take it that it's your desire that it not be out there?

IDLE: I always thought it would be fun to put out a highlight DVD, absolutely, but I could never be bothered to track down all the business things. Trying to do business with the BBC... you know, it's one of the most bureaucratic organizations in the world. It isn't worth the candle to go flog through the various... There's always about three different departments. So it's not as simple as you think. I'd love to be able to release it, but I'd need them because they have all the contracts with the other people, as I control all the other rights. It's worse than reinstating Rutland.

IGNFF: English bureaucracy pales when compared to BBC bureaucracy, doesn't it?

IDLE: Yes, but at least the French leads the world in these things.

IGNFF: Almost into the ground.

IDLE: Yes... that's bureaucracy for you.

IGNFF: What led to your many guest appearances on Saturday Night Live?

IDLE: I met Lorne Michaels when we were appearing at the City Centre with Python, about 1975. I went backstage during the first season when they were doing one live... the Muppets were still on it. And then I hosted the first or second one of the second series. I took, as an example of my work, two things that I had made. One was a parody of Tommy, called "Pommy" – about a deaf, dumb, and blind pop star trying to get himself out of a Ken Russell film – and the other was The Rutles, with Neil Innes. And there were just fan letters written to The Rutles – there was just a big, enormous response to SNL. I had actually planned to do a documentary with the BBC on them – indeed a "mockumentary" on the lives of The Rutles, and Lorne said, "Why don't you do it for NBC? You'll have more money to make it with." Which was a fabulous idea. So I did.

IGNFF: I don't see how you could turn down more money...

IDLE: Well, more money to spend on it was actually the key. I mean, I didn't make any money on it, of course!

IGNFF: What was the most difficult part about mounting the mockumentary?

IDLE: It wasn't difficult, really, at all. I knew Neil Innes would write all the songs, I co-directed it with Gary Weis – I'd made two short films for Saturday Night Live with him. One was "Body Language," and one was "Drag Racing," where Dan Aykroyd and I were actually in drag down at Flushing Airport. So I knew I could work with Gary, and that would cover it – he shot it and I stood in front of the camera and made the editorial decisions. It was a good combination, and Lorne Michaels was the producer.

IGNFF: You mentioned at one point on the DVD commentary that you weren't sure what Paul (McCartney) thought of the piece.

IDLE: Paul's never been one who enjoys criticism – which is to his detriment. I think it was a mistake, because I think it's important to get criticism. I saw Ringo again the other night, and he's the most balanced of all of them. He came out of it the most sane, because he had to have therapy to overcome alcoholism, so he has some perspective on it, and an appreciation of it – rather than just trying to run and hide from it all, all the time. It was so big... it's ridiculous. I think it's a difficult thing to overcome. Linda loved it. She loved it.

IGNFF: That actually says a lot.

IDLE: It does. She only liked it after 1968 – a remark I always found quite puzzling.

IGNFF: You obviously heard back from Ringo and George, but what did you hear back from John and Paul?

IDLE: George loved it and was in it, you know, and supported it. In fact, about two years ago I was at George's – I was with Neil Innes – and George and Ringo picked up guitars and started to sing "Ouch!", which I thought was hilarious. Seeing Beatles sing a Rutles song was just... it was a magical moment. It was fabulous. And we were sort of conceptually the missing ones in their group – it was odd, because I was like the ersatz Paul and Neil was like the ersatz John. So it was a strange, poignant, and fabulously hysterical situation.

IGNFF: Its fascinating to read the Beatles Anthology book and see how often George would reference The Rutles in order to illustrate a point about the history of The Beatles.

IDLE: Oh yes... all the time. He used it all the time. And I'm glad to say that the sequel that I made, which is called Can't Buy Me Lunch – and which is locked in the vault at Warners till I should pass away. I actually got it to George, and he actually saw it before he died, and watched it with a beatific smile on his face, a month to live, and his lovely son, had an audience of one.

IGNFF: Will it ever have an audience greater than that?

IDLE: I don't know if it needs an audience greater than that one. I would like it one day to come out, absolutely.

IGNFF: What are the circumstances behind that being locked away?

IDLE: It's difficult to get a sale of a one-off on any part of American television, because nobody's really interested. They can't pay enough to justify the lure of Warners, who want to sell it for first viewing. We could sell the second and the 300th showing immediately, but the first showing, they want to see a bit of money up front – you know what I mean? And that's hard for any channel to sort of buy. I don't know what the excuses are... it beats me.

IGNFF: You would think there would be an audience.

IDLE: I know there's an audience. That's not the issue. The issue is whether there's a buyer, which is a business/network decision.

IGNFF: So it's all a matter of a business perception.

IDLE: Absolutely. I mean, they could sell it cheaply and it would be on the air tomorrow, you know what I mean? That's not the issue.

IGNFF: They could make their money back on the back-end with DVDs and video.

IDLE: One would hope, but companies have their own... You know, if you make one, it's really hard to sell one – because nobody can make a profit off one. The advertisers – it's not worth their while to advertise on it. It's only one. If there was 32 more coming, it would be fine.

IGNFF: Well, get cracking!

IDLE: Me! Oh yeah, right...

IGNFF: What is the content of the sequel? I know there was some found footage.

IDLE: Yes, there's found footage, which I went to New Jersey and found the original outtakes – the negatives – which are fabulous. Mechanically, you could just process them, and the positive was all fresh and great. Neil had put out a sort of follow-up Rutle album with new songs on it, and I lifted some of those songs and put them over the old footage, and in-between I have my character – who is now 25 years older – still running around in a breathy fashion, interviewing people about the effect of The Rutles on their lives. So we have Tom Hanks, Garry Shandling, Salman Rushdie, Steve Martin, Robin Williams, David Bowie, James Taylor, Clint Black, Bonnie Raitt – you know, on and on, hundreds of celebrities talking about the effects of The Rutles on their lives.

IGNFF: Whoever you could corner.

IDLE: Whoever I could find. You know, Mike Nichols, Jann Wenner – it's a huge roll call of people all lying. It's fabulous.

IGNFF: Guy on the Street #4...

IDLE: A few of them.

IGNFF: As a sequel, how closely does it still hew to an ersatz Beatles story?

IDLE: Well, it doesn't do the story. It's more of a parody of that ABC documentary. It's more like a look back at this fabulous time, you know, and what we all think of it, and what effect The Rutles had on the world.

IGNFF: A retrospective on the impact of The Rutles.

IDLE: Exactly.
