После трёх часов на Горбушке я обнаружила 2 палатки Long Live Rock'n'roll. Ни в той, ни в другой и слыхом не слихивали ни про каких Rutles. И в остальных палатках тоже... Люди, поделитесь драгоценной информацией: где вы ЭТО достали??? Ну ведь ГДЕ-ТО вы ЭТО доставали... Москва называется!

Although it started off simply as a TV sketch starring Neil Innes and Eric Idle, The Rutles have become something of a phenomenon.

A gentle parody of The Beatles, the group found themselves revered by such bands as Oasis, and have recently reformed to appear at the Albert Hall with Steve Coogan.

“It’s for the teenage cancer trust, and has been organised by Roger Daltrey. We’re going to be Alan Partridge’s chat show band,” says Innes, who brings The Rutles to Birmingham’s Glee Club on Sunday.

His career kicked off in the early Sixties with The Bonzo Bog Doo Dah Band.

“It was good drinking music,” he says of the jazz-inspired Bonzos. “We used to play five pubs a week in London until we were discovered by Kenny Ball’s brother-in-law and taken to North Shields. We did six weeks on the cabaret circuit, then another six weeks, then another... The music we were playing was taken off old jazz 78s. If they had silly titles, like Hunting Tigers Out In India, we’d do it.” After scoring a bona fide smash with I’m The Urban Spaceman in ‘68, the Bonzos were asked to appear in TV series Do Not Adjust Your Set with a bunch of young upstarts who would later form Monty Python. “It was a mad children’s show, truly inventive, but you’d get adults getting home early from work on a Thursday night to catch it. We’d do things like a three minute version of Aladdin, this was way before the Reduced Shakespeare Company. We did 26 of those, then the Bonzos went to America, and when we came back, Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Eric Idle and Terry Gilliam had teamed up with John Cleese.”

But when the Pythons began to branch out into films (Holy Grail, Life of Brian) and play large theatres and stadiums, they always called on Innes, who Palin refers to as “the seventh Python”, to help.

Yet in between Python commitments, Idle and Innes were also working on the series Rutland Weekend Television, the trials of a fictitious tiny TV company.

Meanwhile, in the US, seminal comedy series Saturday Night Live, which launched the careers of John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray had asked Eric to host a show, and with American promoters offering large sums for the recently split Beatles to reform, Idle and Innes offered them The Pre-Fab Four - The Rutles.

With post bags bulging after the show aired, a TV special, All You Need Is Cash, was to follow in 1977.

“My idea was to come up with a spoof of A Hard Day’s Night, and Eric had an idea about a documentary film maker,” recalls Innes of the programme’s inception, “so we put them together.”

So brilliant were tracks such as Cheese And Onions, Hold My Hand and Piggy In The Middle, the music press mistook them for actual Beatles tunes, George Harrison gave his official seal of approval, and Innes was even invited to the US by fans.

“It was pleasing in a way as I didn’t want to trivialise The Beatles’ legacy,” he says.

Returning to The Rutles in ’96 to coincide with The Beatles Anthology project, Innes and original member John Halsey (Barry Wom) are back again - but don’t call it a comeback.

“How can it be a comeback? I’ve never retired,” laughs Innes.

Beatle Bits #162
Neat little item on Abbey Rd a few days ago on a Rutle reunion.

This got me to thinking about why we have not had any solo Rutle offerings over the past 25 years, although I guess the pre-Fab Four never officially split up.

But in any event, would it not be grand if we had a Ron Nasty and Chastity DVD that captured their Getting Wet For Peace days, as well as when Nasty sat in his wheelchair alone with his thoughts. We could call this Nasty Legend.

(And surely Nasty must have been recording in secret as well.)

Oh, and think of the hullabaloo of Dirk McQuickly and his post Rutles band, The Punk Floyd, touring all over the world, singing "dee-dee-dee-dee-dee-dee."

And don't forget Stig O'Hara, who gave up on guitar and became a hostess for Air India. Can you even imagine what his home movies would be like. All the places he's been? This could be presented in a 3 DVD set entitled, "All The Places I've Passed."

Finally, we can't forget Barrington Womb, who after opening up two hair salons, formed an all star band called the Wombats, and played many hotels and casinos, with a little help from his friends.

On a personal note, I will soon be engaging the Rutles former manager, Ron DeCline, to act as my editor, well, because I need a keen eye and a steady hand.

I'm told Ron's left hand does not know who his right hand is doing.

да. видео AYNIC (с видеокассеты) и Жизнь Браена (с DVD?) были в файлообменных сетях в интернете в AVI формате (естественно без перевода).

В "Антивоенной коллекции рок-н-ролла" есть оба альбома и фильм.

Cпасибо, народ! Я-таки нашла на Горбушке диск Rutles "Archeology" (если б вы знали, каких нервов мне это стоило! :))))) Но увы :((( была очень разочарована. Во-первых, я ожидала услышать там голос Эрика Айдла, но Эрик там упорно молчит. Думала, тексты будут смешнее, чем они оказались в действительности (хотя "Let's be natural" - это, надо признать, гениально :)))) Они просто спёрли Битловские мелодии и всё... Обидно :( От Эрика я ожидала большего

Это Эрик-то не автор лирики и не музыкант? ХА-ХА! Послушайте песни из "Смысла жизни", из "Брайана" и т.д. - там практически всё дело рук Эрика. А знаменитая "Always look on the bright side of life" - написал и исполнил тот же Эрик, при чём гениально написал и исполнил. А вообще очень люблю и Ратлз и Монти Пайтона. Flying Circus - афигенная вещь, только никак не осилю до конца :))

это круто. у них был достаточно смешной сериал, и фильм Священный Грааль - просто супер

Насколько я знаю, Монти Пайтон - это група комедийных актёров и сценаристов и режисёров в одних лицах. Название фильма - Монти Пайтон и Священный Грааль. Я тут, кстати, засабачил статейку про Ратлз, жду, кода опубликуют.
