Upcoming Book: "Here, There, and Everywhere: A Legacy of Sound, Music, and The Beatles" by Geoff Emerick
Publisher: Gotham Books ; ISBN: 1592401791
Release Date: March 16, 2006 (as listed on amazon).

Engineer Geoff Emerick Solidifies Book Deal On His Work With The Beatles

New York, NY- William Shinker, Senior Vice President and Publisher of Gotham Books, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA), announced today Gotham Books has acquired the World English rights to Here, There, and Everywhere: A Legacy of Sound, Music, and The Beatles by legendary sound engineer Geoff Emerick and well respected music journalist Howard Massey.

Geoff Emerick began working with The Beatles at Abbey Road studios at the age of 15-and from age 19 on was the chief recording engineer for the band, in charge of the recording of such seminal albums as Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Abbey Road. Emerick's book will bring to life the creative process of the band in the studio and reveal never-before-told stories of the groundbreaking recording techniques he pioneered to give them their unique sound. He will also tell why he quit his position in the midst of the contentious White Album sessions, and how they asked him to return to work with them on Abbey Road-and give insight into his post-Beatles recording career, including working on "Band On The Run" with Paul McCartney & Wings.

Emerick was the recording genius behind the board for The Beatles' most adventurous tracks, and helped the band achieve the experimental sounds that are the hallmarks of their most enduring songs. Since the breakup of The Beatles, Emerick has forged an active career as an engineer and producer, winning four Grammys in the process. He has worked extensively with Paul McCartney, as well as other major artists such as Elvis Costello, Art Garfunkel, Badfinger, America, and Jeff Beck. Costello has committed to write a foreword for the book.

Coauthor Howard Massey is a veteran music journalist who has written eleven books and hundreds of feature articles and reviews for such publications as Billboard, Blender, and EQ.

Brendan Cahill, an Editor at Gotham Books, said, "We're tremendously excited to be publishing Geoff Emerick's book. He's a living legend in the world of music, and this book will give new insight into the creation of the most unforgettable songs by the most beloved-band the world has ever known."

Geoff Emerick said, "I'm proud the work I did with The Beatles has stood the test of time. Now I feel it's time to tell my story, not only to provide a glimpse into the inner sanctum of the recording studio, but to shine a light on the incredible creativity that fueled those great records. I was privileged to be a part of this journey, and I'm delighted that Gotham Books will be giving me the opportunity to share my experiences with the reading public."

The Beatles: 365 Days is a dazzling photographic survey-in 425 black-and-white and color images, most of which are rarely or never before seen-that follows the Beatles through the arc of their spectacular career from 1963 to 1970. John Lennon : The New York Years (Hardcover)John Lennon : The New York Years (Hardcover)
by Bob Gruen (Photographer)

Book Description
Published to coincide with the 25th anniversary of John Lennon's death and the 65th anniversary of his birth, this is an intimate album of photographs, most never published before, of Lennon in his last decade.

A musical genius, an innovator, a peace activist-John Lennon was all these and more, and he continues to be revered a quarter century after his shocking murder in New York elevated him to mythic stature. Published to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Lennon's death, this intimate album of 150 photographs-most of which have never been published before-offers a very personal view of the rock legend in his last decade by someone who had astounding access to his private life.

Bob Gruen first photographed Lennon in 1971 and became his personal photographer and close friend shortly thereafter. Over the course of the next nine years, right up until Lennon was killed, Gruen would photograph him extensively. This book assembles the most revealing of those images, taken during Lennon's years in New York, together with Gruen's reflections on the circumstances surrounding the photos, including John's relationship with Yoko, how he dealt with fame, and his experiences with fatherhood. The result is a remarkable behind-the-scenes look at John Lennon as a performer, a legend, and a person.

About the Author
Bob Gruen is one of the world's most respected photographers of the rock scene, and was John Lennon's personal photographer through the 1970s. He has also worked with major rock and roll figures including Elton John, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, and Tina Turner. His work has appeared in numerous publications and galleries including the National Portrait Gallery in London. He lives in New York City.

John Lennon : All I Want is the Truth (Hardcover)John Lennon : All I Want is the Truth (Hardcover)
by Elizabeth Partridge

Book Description
Award-winning biographer Elizabeth Partridge dives into Lennon’s life from the night he was born in 1940 during a World War II air raid on Liverpool, deftly taking us through his turbulent childhood and his rebellious rock’n’roll teens to his celebrated life writing, recording, and performing music with the Beatles. She sheds light on the years after the Beatles, with Yoko Ono, as he struggled to make sense of his own artistic life—one that had turned from youthful angst to suffocating fame in almost a split second.

Partridge chronicles the emotional highs and paralyzing lows Lennon transformed into brilliant, evocative songs. With striking black-andwhite photographs spanning his entire life, John Lennon: All I Want Is the Truth is the unforgettable story of one of rock’s biggest legends.

About the Author
Elizabeth Partridge won the Boston Globe/Hornbook Award and was a National Book Award Finalist for her 2002 biography of Woody Guthrie. She lives with her husband in California.

Lennon Revealed By Larry Kane"Lennon Revealed" By Larry Kane

Description: John Lennon-working class hero, rebel with a cause, citizen of the world. He would have been 65 this year.

A quarter of a century after his death, the questions remain: what was John Lennon really like, what drove him to the heights of creativity and the depths of despair, and why do his music and message still resonate for millions around the world? Now acclaimed broadcast journalist and author Larry Kane uncovers the mysteries of Lennon's life and implodes the myths surrounding it. Kane definitely has the right credentials for the job. He was the only American reporter who traveled in the Beatles' official entourage to every stop on their history-making first American tours, and he stayed in touch with Lennon until an assassin ended the former Beatle's life.

Lennon Revealed is filled with revelations about John Lennon's path from public glory to personal destruction, and ultimately to the inspiring rebirth that defines a triumph of the spirit. Drawing on extensive personal accounts and extraordinary new interviews with more than 50 confidants and experts-most notably, with Yoko Ono-Kane brings the reader closer than ever to the man who, in life and in death, has had a singular impact on humanity. Kane also provides stunning new information about Lennon's relationships with Ono, his childhood soulmate Stuart Sutcliffe, his lover May Pang, and Beatles manager Brian Epstein. The book includes an exclusive DVD featuring the final filmed interview with Lennon and Paul McCartney, conducted by Larry Kane in 1968. Brief clips from this famous interview have appeared in just a few places, including the official documentary Imagine

About the Author
Larry Kane, "the dean of Philadelphia television news anchors," has had a 45-year career as a TV journalist covering almost every facet of American life and major world events. But it is the time he spent with the Beatles that remains most memorable, and he told that story to great critical and commercial acclaim in Ticket to Ride (Running Press), which has sold more than 55,000 copies.

The Beatle Generation
For a brief moment in time, John, Paul, George and Ringo might have been the center of the universe

By CANDY LEONARD
Arts Writer

Thirty-eight years before Live 8, Paul McCartney and his then-bandmates were asked by the BBC to perform in the first global television broadcast, "One World" — the event for which the easily translatable "All You Need Is Love" was written. Young Beatle fans all over the world, including Bono (and many others on the Live 8 roster) watched in awe as the Beatles spread their simple message of love to a generation. Though many of us may have found the recent McCartney-Bono-Sgt. Pepper spectacle cheesy and disturbing, perhaps even bordering on blasphemous, it's origins can be understood by reading Steven D. Stark's new book, Meet the Beatles: A Cultural History of The Band That Shook Youth, Gender, and the World. [HarperEntertainment; 352 pps; $26.95; $37.95 (CAN)]

The most recent in the ongoing, four-decade stream of Beatle books, Meet the Beatles offers new insights into the whole Beatle phenomenon — no simple feat, considering there are thousands of books out there already. Stark puts the Beatles, and us as a generation of fans, into a cultural and historical context and makes a strong case for their enormous impact.

Like most Beatle books, Stark tells their story chronologically, beginning with the childhood and family circumstances of each future Beatle. But unlike many Beatle historians, Stark makes post-war Liverpool an integral part of their creation story, offering a rich account of their early days and influences that seemed fresh, even to this reader who has not only read numerous Beatle books, but has also walked the hallowed streets of Liverpool.

In fact, Stark manages to present their entire story — from John and Paul's fateful meeting in July of 1957 to the band's breakup in 1970 — in a way that would be interesting and accessible to younger readers just discovering the Beatles, but also engaging for fans who know the story and all its footnotes by heart.

Starks sharpest departure from other Beatle books and his major contribution to Beatle analysis is his focus on how the group understood, presented, and transformed gender. Stark explains how early gender bending in British theatre, the latent homosexuality of seaport culture, the sensibilities of art school, their encounter with young European artists and intellectuals, Brian Epstein's obsession with style, their love of American girl groups, and John and Paul's shared experience of a mother's death all contributed to the Beatles' fluid understanding of gender which was reflected in their unique personal style, on and off the stage

Their uniqueness captivated us immediately when they stepped off the plane at JFK Airport. Two days later, 73 million people heard the unique, androgynous sound that went with the androgynous look. The Feb. 9, 1964 broadcast of the Ed Sullivan Show was seared into the hearts and minds of a generation — an event remembered in terms of "before" and "after."

According to Stark, all their gender-bending influences enabled John and Paul to speak from a female perspective, and the resulting egalitarianism in their lyrics (relative to other pop songs), along with their broader, gentler presentation of maleness helped launch the women's movement and the new understanding of gender that followed in it wake.

Without rehashing the old and familiar, Stark looks at John's relationship with Yoko and Paul's' with Linda, showing how these strong, nurturing, unconventional women gave them something they lost as teenagers when their mothers died. Cynics have argued that both of these women, after carefully studying their prey, positioned themselves in the right place and pounced when the time was right. Stark's analysis neither accepts nor refutes that view, but he takes a thoughtful look at why those relationships developed and why they endured with such intensity.

Stark offers what I call a "Beatlecentric" argument in that he directly and indirectly attributes much of the 60s tumult and rise of youth culture to the Beatles. He claims that they modeled a "brotherly collegiality" along with an emphasis on egalitarianism and communalism, lack of pretension, optimism, belief in the power of love, and a childlike sense of playfulness and wonder, all of which were key parts of the youth culture and hippie ethos. They did this, he explains, by creating a kind of "social epidemic" — with their fans and the press as "carriers."

Stark does a good job of supporting the Beatlecentric position — especially with regard to gender. He offers compelling examples of how everything they presented us with became the next big thing — not merely in the "fad" sense, but as lasting cultural change. As true artists and innovators, the Beatles perceived the world around them but reflected the world back to us in new ways. Continuing Stark's "epidemic" metaphor — they picked up viruses that were out there, and in the petrie dishes of their fertile minds, the viruses mutated, then spread.

There is a long history of drug use among artists and musicians, but the Beatles celebrated use of marijuana and hallucinogenic drugs helped bring these drugs into the mainstream, along with the psychedelic aesthetic and interest in alternative consciousness. But as Stark sees it, "Drugs were out there, I don't see them as the drug salesmen of the sixties; just as alcohol was part of the Jazz Age, drugs were part of the sixties." He maintains that their drug use was far more extensive than anyone knew at the time, and questions producer George Martin's assertion that they "were more brilliant than they realized and it would have happened without drugs." In fact, Stark goes so far as to say that the Beatles "would not have happened" without drugs. "Without pot and acid, there would have been no "Rubber Soul," no "Revolver, "no "Sgt. Pepper;" we don't know what they would have created, but these would not exist as we know them."

Though he doesn't dwell on this point, his entire argument hinges on it to some extent in that all the social change he attributes to them — the feminization of culture, the popularization of Eastern philosophy, the revolution in the recording industry, rock'n'roll morphing into "rock" and becoming an art form, and even the collapse of the Berlin Wall — he is indirectly attributing to their use of creativity-enhancing drugs. It begs the question as to which was the real agent of change: the Beatles or the drugs.

It's unlikely that mainstream historians will credit the Beatles rather than Ronald Regan for the fall of communism— although several former-Soviet artists, writers, and political insiders share that view. The John Lennon Wall of forbidden lyrics created by student protesters in Soviet-controlled Prague has become a tourist attraction, and there's a Yellow Submarine ride where the Berlin Wall once stood.

According to Stark, the Beatles' role as agents of change can be easily dismissed because people tend not see the connection between popular culture and politics. "In the sixties, music, drugs, and the counterculture were inseparable, and the Beatles were the centerpiece. " What few realized at the time, according to Stark, is that as they became more outspoken, they were "vehemently attacked by the establishment," thus "solidifying their position as leaders of the counterculture."

In retrospect, it can be said that John's famously misconstrued comment about the Beatles being more popular than Jesus set off one of the earliest battles in the "culture wars" we hear so much about today— with most of the record and poster burning occurring in the Red States.

Definitely more "serious" than many other Beatle books, Meet the Beatles contributes to our understanding of the entire phenomenon — yet it's also fun to read. It's not bogged down with gossip (although there are a few new tidbits) or inflated with fan gush (although Stark is obviously a fan). The one area where it did drag a bit was his detailed discussion of the legal wrangling around the band's breakup. It's an important piece of the story, but it doesn't add anything to Stark's main thesis.

I recently read Jane Fonda's autobiography, and even though I'm not particularly interested in Jane Fonda, I enjoyed the book as a well-written cultural history, and would recommend it. Similarly, the appeal of Meet The Beatles extends far beyond their fan base. Of course it's a nostalgic trip for those of us infected with that virus back in 1964, but it's also an interesting, reader-friendly history of a brief moment in time when we thought we could change the world with music.

Gee, what a silly idea.

Gods of Rock
An interview with veteran rock journalist Anthony DeCurtis

By Paul Raushenbush

Rock and roll music played an enormous part in the way I came to understand the world and my role in it. As much as any sermon, rock lyrics enlightened and challenged me and were instructional in my eventual calling as a Baptist preacher. So, it is not surprising that I have a fascination with the musicians behind the music. Fortunately, for people like me, there are people like Anthony DeCurtis. In his new book "In Other Words," DeCurtis provides in-depth introductions to 39 of the high priests of rock music, including George Harrison, Johnny Cash, Bono, and Bruce Springsteen. Over his 25 years of rock journalism with Rolling Stone, VH1, and many other magazines, Anthony has interviewed just about every rock and roll artist who matters. I first met Anthony when I was shopping an idea for an MTV show blending spirituality and pop culture. He was incredibly generous with his wisdom and time. It was a pleasure to talk to him about his newly released book.

One of the things that comes out in this book are questions of spirituality--for instance with David Bowie, his obsession with atheism vs. belief in God.
Oh yeah, when you have the time [for a lengthy interview], more serious things come up than just what the new album's about. For instance, with Trey [Trey Anastasio, from the jam band Phish], he was talking about how music comes to him. It was very spiritual; he has a musical view of how the universe works.

Do you feel that the art of interviewing is a spiritual practice?
If you believe that anything that connects human beings deeply is spiritual, then interviewing is absolutely a spiritual practice. You have to accept the reality of another human being and be prepared to really meet someone, regardless of what you have read about them or what you might know about them. The best interviews are motivated by genuine curiosity, transcending yourself and paying attention to another person; and there is a spiritual exercise to that.

Is there a way that the interview technique is something that we could use in our personal lives with loved ones.
Well, I would flip it and say that I use the techniques that I employ in my personal life when I do interviews.

But, are you tempted to think, "Oooooh, it's George Harrison, that's much more interesting than my wife." Aren't we tempted to take our loved ones for granted?
Interviewing, like relationships, requires seeing other people in three-dimensional terms, not our fantasy, not what we would like for them to be, not what our fears are, not our idol, but genuinely relating to them for what they are. So whether you are sitting across the lunch table from a woman and realizing that 'she too is a human being,' or you are with a rock star and realize that they don't just exist on CDs and videos and on the pages of magazines--it's kind of the same lesson.

Have you ever had someone put you in the role of confessor?
Well, certainly the interview with Rufus Wainwright about his struggle with crystal methamphetamines--that was right there. However, I did not sit there thinking, "Gee this poor guy," I was thinking about situations in my own life that I couldn't control. It was scary. At one point, he said in the conversation, "I'm kind of uncomfortable talking about my sobriety because that could end right after this interview." Just saying that now I have chills going up my spine, and I had them when he said it. We are all walking that line. I don't see it as a confession in that I don't consider myself exempt from whatever it is that others are struggling with. A Catholic background helps in this regard. The feeling that you are capable of all sin is readily available. You think, "That could well have been me."

Is that grace? The fact that you can see yourself in that position, and perhaps by not judging them and being with them and saying, "You know what--I get it, and I still want to hang out with you and I admire you."
Well, with the Rufus Wainwright interview, we knew that we were doing something. I mean that story went in the f---ing New York Times. It hit hard, and people are still talking about it. The grace for me was that it was real. Whether it was good or bad, we are taking the reality of his life out there and putting it in the Sunday New York Times--deal with it.

But remember, when you are interviewing someone you are having a very private conversation that is going very public--that doubleness is there and so you are also excited by the story.

Is there an artist gene? Is there anything that connects all artists?
Well, why would anyone sit down and write a song? If you have something to say, why don't you just tell it to your sister or write it in a letter? The author Joan Didion once said that her novel "The Book of Common Prayer" was inspired by her seeing a woman in an airport and asking herself the question 'what is she doing there?' So, how we answer those questions--doing nothing, writing an essay or song or movie or novel…. It's a way of engaging the world or trying to discover it. In your interview with Marilyn Manson, he says that the creative act allows him to be God.
Well, there is that amazing thing. There was nothing, and then there is a song. What fascinates me is the stuff of everyday and how it finds it way into a lyric.

Were there any moments when interviewing any of these people when you felt, "I am in the presence of greatness"?
Well, yeah, meeting Johnny Cash or George Harrison certainly.

George Harrison became very spiritual. Was that part of your experience with him?
George was the youngest of the Beatles and what was happening to the Beatles was very confusing to him. His spiritual exploration--first through LSD; and then his exposure to Ravi Shankar, yoga, and exploration of eastern spirituality brought him some peace and gave him some perspective on things. It's difficult to reconstruct for people who weren't there how important the Beatles were and how people treated them. Everybody thought these records were filled with meaning for everyone.

And Harrison had a difficult time with being treated as if he himself was a guru at a time when he was meeting people he believed were genuine gurus. To him, people saying "a line you wrote in a song changed my whole life" seemed ridiculous. So, he as he put it, "When you're beginning to understand your place in a much, much greater whole, how do remain one of the Fab Four with people are saying that you are among the most important people in the world? You laugh at it."

But at the same time, you yourself were saying: "I'm in the presence of greatness."
Yeah, well, when John made his comment that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus, some people burned their records. But believe me; I didn't bat an eye. It didn't bother me in the least.

Because it was true for you?
Absolutely, I was far more interested in John Lennon. But he wasn't saying it like they were better than Jesus; he was just saying it like 'this is the cultural moment we've arrived at.' Of course, I was 15 and in Catholic school, and to me the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan were my paths to self-awareness and freedom, and my Catholic School was a jail.

Has that continued for you? Have these artists been a way of freedom for you instead of an institutional religious path?
I have learned a lot from pop songs. I don't have the slightest embarrassment about saying that there are songs on the radio that have moved me to tears and led me to deep understandings about myself even if they were written in 15 minutes by someone desperate to have a hit. People like Bono or Michael Stipe [from REM]--these are people whose music has meant a great deal to me. But I was an adult when I met them and heard their music. I was pretty fully formed; but I am who I am because of the music of George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Keith Richards--that's what made me. So, to meet those people is jarring because it is hard to get over the idea that somehow our lives brought us to this room and we just sat down and talked – that simple fact was very hard to absorb and the process of absorbing it became the interviews in the book.
