The Yardbirds take flight to back first new album in 35 years

The Yardbirds hit the road this summer for a U.S. tour that supports "Birdland," the group's first new studio set since 1968.

The album--which comes 35 years after the group's previous studio release, "Little Games"--landed in stores on Tuesday (4/22).

Founding members Chris Dreja (rhythm guitar) and Jim McCarty (drums/songwriter) recorded "Birdland" with new members Gypie Mayo (lead guitar and backing vocals), John Idan (bass and lead vocals) and Alan Glen (harmonica and backing vocals). The album features seven new cuts, as well as remakes of eight of the group's '60s-era classics: "I'm Not Talking," "The Nazz are Blue," "Train Kept a Rolling," "Mr. You're a Better Man Than I," "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago." "Heart Full of Soul," "Over Under Sideways Down," "For Your Love" and "Shapes of Things."

Former Yardbirds guitarist Jeff Beck makes a guest appearance on one of the album's tracks. Slash, Steve Vai, the Goo Goo Dolls' Johnny Rzeznik and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter also make contributions.

Dreja talked about the new album in a recent statement.

"To make our first album in so many years has been a lasting ambition of ours," he said. "We wanted to do our original songs and our new ones with modern production while preserving the essence of our sound. It was a labor of love, and we're grateful to everyone who helped--our guest musicians and especially to Steve Vai."

Dreja went on to say that he doesn't think that the band has lost a step in the three-and-a-half decades that have passed since the group issued "Little Games."

"To me, it doesn't sound like we've been away for 35 years," he said. "The Yardbirds are still a kick-ass, high-energy band--and that comes across on this album."

Aside from its string of '60s-era hits, the Yardbirds are perhaps best known for spawning rock-guitar gods Beck, Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton.

Clapton Covers Robert Johnson

New album finds guitar legend honoring blues predecessor

Back at the crossroads

Eric Clapton will release an entire album of covers of songs by Robert Johnson on March 23rd. Me and Mr. Johnson will feature the guitar legend's interpretations of fourteen songs by the Delta blues legend, including "Love in Vain" and "Hellhound on My Trail."
Though Clapton released a blues covers album (From the Cradle) in 1994 and made a record with B.B. King in 2000, Me and Mr. Johnson is his first full tribute to Johnson.

Still much of Clapton's career has been inspired by, and a tribute to, the doomed bluesman who died in 1938 at age twenty-seven of strychnine poisoning and was buried in an unmarked grave. Clapton was on the frontline of the British blues movement in 1965, playing with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. With Cream he scored a charting hit with a cover of Johnson's "Crossroads" in 1969, a song that would provide the title of his 1988 box set. Clapton regularly included Johnson covers in his live performances, two of which, "Walking Blues" and "Malted Milk," appeared on his 1992 Unplugged album.

"It is a remarkable thing to have been driven and influenced all of my life by the work of one man," Clapton said. "I think of it as a landmark that I navigate by, whenever I feel myself going adrift. Up until I heard his music, everything I had ever heard seemed as if it was dressed up for a shop window somewhere. At first, it scared me in its intensity, and I could only take it in small doses. I could never really get away from it, and in the end, it spoiled me for everything else."

Clapton was joined on the record guitarists Andy Fairweather Low and Doyle Bramhall II, keyboardist Billy Preston, bassist Nathan East, drummer Steve Gadd and harmonica player Jerry Portnoy.

Eric Clapton Sets Up Guitar Festival

Eric Clapton has announced a one-off three day guitar festival in Dallas, Texas to benefit his Crossroads charity.

The Crossroads Centre Antigua was founded by Clapton in 1997 as a treatment and education centre and is now independently run.

The Crossroads Guitar Festival will take place at Fair Park in Dallas from June 4 to June 6.

The final day will feature an all star concert featuring Eric Clapton and Doyle Bramhall II, J.J. Cale, Larry Carlton, Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, David Hidalgo, Eric Johnson, B.B. King, Sonny Landreth, Brian May, Pat Metheny, Robert Randolph, Otis Rush, Carlos Santana, Hubert Sumlin, Dan Tyminski, Steve Vai, Jimmie Vaughan, Joe Walsh and ZZ Top.

The "house bands" will be Booker T & The MG's, Jimmie Vaughan's band and Eric Clapton's band.

Over the three days, the festival will feature guitar clinics, manufacturer's displays and live events.

Clapton has also put together a Crossroads Guitar Auction to be held through Christie's on June 24. He has donated 50 guitars that he has personally owned for the auction. Friends like Pete Townshend and Steve Vai have also contributed guitars. Proceeds will also go to the Crossroads Centre.

Clapton EP available on iTunes

A four track EP preview from Eric Clapton's upcoming album, Me And Mr Johnson, goes on sale exclusively on Apple's iTunes Music Store from tomorrow.

The four tracks are When You Got A Good Friend, Come On In My Kitchen, Milkcow Calf Blues and If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day.

Clapton's album, a 14-tack set dedicated to legendary blues guitarist Robert Johnson, will be available in UK stores on March 22.

Clapton plays a six-night residency at the Royal Albert Hall in May as part of his first UK and Irish tour in six years. The tour also includes concerts in Dublin, Belfast, Glasgow, Newcastle, Manchester and Sheffield.

No more tears for Clapton

Eric Clapton has dropped two of his best-known songs from his concerts.

He found he couldn't perform Tears in Heaven and My Father's Eyes - which deal with the loss of his son.

Four-year-old Conor died when he fell from a New York apartment in 1991.

Clapton said: "I didn't feel the loss anymore, which is so much a part of performing those songs. I really have to connect with the feelings that were there when I wrote them.

"They're kind of gone and I really don't want them to come back, particularly. My life is a different life now."

He said he would feel conflicted to sing the songs at a time when he's happy, adding: "They probably need a rest and maybe I'll introduce them from a much more detached point of view."

Что-то не впечатлили эти четыри песни.Попсовато как-то. From the Cradle кажется поблюзовее,посолиднее был.

Milkcow Calf Blues стал чем-то вроде Crossroads, даже стиль где-то похож. А уж рифф.....

А вообще, что по мне, то оригиналы лучше. Ну, или по крайне мере не стоило из дельта-блюза делать поп-блюз.
Ну и, кроме того, еще странно, что из 4-х вещей только одна исполнена на акустике.
Хотя в любом случае куплю альбом.
А пока пойду переслушаю Disraeli Gears)

"Попсовато"? Это как?

Rollin' And Tumblin' была записана Hambone Willie Newbern'ом в 1929 году, и у самого Джонсона в If I Had Possession Over Judgement Day цитата из нее имеется. Так что не Клэптон первый :) По поводу того, что и откуда Джонсон брал, можно книги писать, вспомните хоть Sweet Home Chicago.

Насчет акустики - согласен. Очень не понравилось электричество и присутствие бэнда.

Попсовато...Прежде всего имею в виду не аранжировки (хотя и по ним можно сказать пару ласковых слов,в частности ,об использовании клавиш в виде подклада и "моторной" ритм-секции).Имею в виду прежде всего вокал.Не секрет,что в последнее время Эрик стал петь заметно качественнее.Порой просто шикарно.Особенно это заметно на предпоследнем "околоблюзовом" альбоме "Рептилия".Но в такой же манере петь "настоящий" блюз,а тем более Джонсона,мне кажется ,не правильно.Вот у Грина почти совсем голоса нет,а слушать,как он поёт этот же материал ,гораздо интереснее.

Кстати,чаще всего автором Rollin' And Tumblin' указывается товарищ Morganfield (Мадди Уотерс),но возможны и другие варианты:-).А ещё советую послушать "Rambling Pony" Питнра Грина.При том порядке с авторством,который традиционен для блюза,Лед Зеппелин выглядят сущими ангелами:-).

2 papan: ну так у Newbern'a название было Roll And Tumble Blues. Известна она, конечно, благодаря Мадди. Но сочинена раньше, 29-й год для Мадди это рановато.
