Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton find their way home

NEW YORK -- They belong together, like Lennon and McCartney, or Jagger and Richards, or Springsteen and Clemons. That was the impression, at least, that a concert by Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton at Madison Square Garden on Monday created.

Winwood and Clapton (they were billed in that order) were bandmates once, in Blind Faith, which released a self-titled album in 1969 and toured briefly, then broke up. They played four of that album's six songs at Madison Square Garden. But the show, which opened a sold-out three-concert stand that ends tonight, wasn't really about re-creating past glories. It was more about resurrecting a partnership that had infinite potential, but ended prematurely.



Because of that -- and because the golden-voiced Winwood, 59, and uber-guitarist Clapton, 62, can still sing and play exceptionally well -- it was the best kind of reunion.

Clapton and Winwood haven't played together in decades, except for a six-song collaboration at Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival in Bridgeview, Ill., last summer. Yet, they couldn't have seemed more in synch with each other than they did on Monday.

With Winwood playing organ, and he and Clapton trading gruff, pleading vocal lines, they recaptured the raw-nerved spirit of Clapton's Derek and the Dominos band on "Little Wing" and "Tell the Truth." Clapton nimbly handled the twists and turns of songs by Winwood's progressive-rock group Traffic, such as "Dear Mr. Fantasy," "Pearly Queen" and the instrumental "Glad."

Airy, mid-tempo Blind Faith songs "Had To Cry Today" and "Can't Find My Way Home" sounded more like Traffic than anything Clapton has recorded, on his own. Another Blind Faith song, the Clapton-sung "Presence of the Lord," was pure gospel.

Clapton's "Forever Man" (recast as a duet with Winwood) and Winwood's "Split Decision" evoked the pop sheen of their '80s music. "After Midnight" and "Low Down," both written by Clapton buddy J.J. Cale, gave Winwood, Clapton and their band (bassist Willie Weeks, drummer Ian Thomas, keyboardist Chris Stainton) an opportunity to play some looser, scruffier roots-rock.

The standout among the night's blues songs was an epic jam on Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile." Winwood seemed to channel some exotic, mystical force as he sang lines like "The night I was born, I swear the moon turned a fire red." And Clapton, stretching out on his guitar solos, drew listeners in with his elegant melodic explorations, then shook them up with some stinging riffs.

The two stayed onstage together for the whole show, except for two solo songs paying tribute to their shared roots. Clapton accompanied himself on acoustic guitar on blues titan Robert Johnson's "Ramblin' On My Mind," and Winwood backed himself, on organ, on a masterfully warm, Ray Charles-like take on "Georgia On My Mind."

There was really only one problem with the show. It ended with an anticlimactic one-song encore: a funky take on Johnson's "Crossroads" (memorably covered by Clapton's pre-Blind Faith group, Cream). It wasn't bad, but it failed to match the fireworks of many of the previous songs.

The two co-stars didn't say much between songs, and made their longest speeches before their respective solo numbers. They both spoke about how glad they were to be there; Clapton also said that he and Winwood were having such a good time "maybe we'll do a bit more," meaning there could be more shows.

This year will also mark the return of the Winwood/Clapton team on CD, since Clapton made a cameo on Winwood's album "Nine Lives," due out in April. But since Winwood is already booked for the summer, opening a Tom Petty tour that comes to the Garden on June 17, and the Prudential Center in Newark on June 18, an extensive joint tour is impossible, at least for the immediate future.

It was natural to wonder whether original Blind Faith drummer Ginger Baker would jump onstage Monday, for a song or two. But Baker, who joined with Clapton and singer-bassist Jack Bruce for Cream reunion shows in 2005, was nowhere in sight. (Blind Faith bassist Ric Grech died in 1990, so a complete Blind Faith reunion was impossible, anyway.)

Maybe Baker was there, watching. But if he wasn't, and he missed last night's show as well, he should think about rushing to New York for the last show, tonight. He may never get a chance to see something like this again. And it really shouldn't be missed.

Музыканты ломают «железные занавесы»

Недавно английский музыкант Эрик Клэптон получил от властей Северной Кореи предложение дать концерт в столице страны Пхеньяне. По слухам, 62-летний гитарист собирается принять его и, ориентировочно, выступить перед северокорейской публикой летом 2009 года. Если все сложится, то Клэптон станет первым западным рок-музыкантом, получившим доступ в одну из самых закрытых стран мира. Это далеко не первый случай, когда «железный занавес» приподнимали не политики и дипломаты, а деятели культуры и искусства.

Порой желание увидеть у себя на родине любимых музыкантов или актеров порождало целые легенды. Например, в СССР долгое время ходила история о том, что в Москву когда-то тайно приезжали The Beatles. На самом деле легендарная четверка никогда не выступала в Советском Союзе, но фанаты желали этого так сильно, что создали себе эту великую иллюзию. Зато в декабре 1978 году в Москве побывала диско-группа Boney M. Число желающих попасть на концерт достигло тогда 100 тыс. человек. А в 1979-ом в СССР явился Элтон Джон, тогда еще не получивший рыцарского титула. В декабре 1987 года «железный занавес» приподнялся для команды Uriah Heep, а год спустя в Ленинграде побывали легендарные немцы из Scorpions. В 1989 году они выступили на московском рок-фестивале, после чего вокалист команды Клаус Майне написал пронзительную балладу Wind of Change, впервые появившуюся в 1990 году на диске Crazy World.

Первыми западными музыкантами, удостоившимися чести выступить в Китайской Народной Республике стали Джордж Майкл и Эндрю Риджели, они же дуэт Wham! Это произошло за год до распада группы, в 1985 году, и стоило их менеджеру Саймону Напье-Беллу больших усилий. Ему пришлось лететь в Пекин и обзванивать различные министерства, а также плести интриги против группы Queen, которая также планировали получить в Китае «право первого вступления». Хитрый менеджер продемонстрировал китайским властям две брошюры, в одной из которых были фото приличных фанатов Wham!, а в другой – фотография Фредди Меркьюри в вызывающей позе. После чего благопристойным Wham! был дан зеленый свет, и группа прибыла в Китай с десятидневным визитом. Кульминацией стал концерт перед 15-тысячной публикой в Пекине. Поклонники были рады видеть артистов, однако тихо сидели на своих местах – то ли из страха перед службой безопасности, то ли из-за традиционной восточной сдержанности.

Власти Кубы также не сильно жаловали артистов из стран загнивающего капитализма. Однако в 2001 году на Острове свободы выступила британская группа The Manic Street Preachers, в свою очередь не жаловавшая враждебное Кубе американское правительство. Концерт в театре имени Карла Маркса, куда пришло 5 тыс. кубинцев, стал первым за 20 лет большим выступлением на Кубе западных звезд. Сами музыканты, поместившие на обложку своего сингла The Masses Against The Classes кубинский флаг, дали понять публике, что поддерживают Кубу в ее борьбе против американизации. Также группа удостоилась встречи с Фиделем Кастро. Кстати, в 2003 году на Кубу прилетел еще один известный критик американского правительства – режиссер Оливер Стоун. Он три дня интервьюировал непримиримого Фиделя, в результате чего на свет появился документальный фильм «Команданте», где лидер кубинской революции говорил об истории, кинозвездах и своем видении будущего. Не возражали кубинцы и против режиссера Майкла Мура, снимавшего фильм-расследование «Здравозахоронение» и отправившего на Кубу на лечение десять спасателей, работавших на развалинах башен-близнецов 11 сентября 2001 года. Узнав об этом, власти США объявили о нарушении режиссером эмбарго на поездки на Кубу и начали против него расследование.

А вот еще один эпизод: в 2007 году в Сирию впервые за 30 лет приехала западная поп-звезда – певец Энрике Иглесиас. Он дал концерт перед 10 тыс. фанатов на специально построенном для этого события стадионе. Шоу было организовано частными компаниями, а доходы от продажи билетов пошли на благотворительность. Организаторы концерта надеялись, что вслед за Иглесиасом-младшим в Сирию будут приезжать и другие звезды. Примечательно, что американское правительство причислило эту страну к «оси зла». Но для Иглесиаса это не стало помехой. Как любой музыкант, он объединяет сердца во всем мире, пока политики раздирают этот мир на части.

Это действительно так или мне просто упорно кажется, что у Уинвуда и Клэптона почти одинаковые голоса? Например, я долго не мог понять, кто именно поет на записях Blind Faith, да и сейчас не могу. Просто вроде говорят, что там в основном Уинвуд, а так я не знаю.

Эрик Клэптон отказался выступать в КНДР

Британский гитарист Эрик Клэптон не приедет с концертом в Пхеньян, сообщает Yonhap со ссылкой на интервью пресс-секретаря музыканта радиостанции MBC.

В среду вечером представительница Клэптона Кристен Фостер (Kristen Foster) заявила, что в его планы не входит выступление в Пхеньяне. Она не уточнила причины отказа Клэптона, однако в средствах массовой информации фигурируют соображения, что это связано с политическими убеждениями рок-музыканта или с его плотным концертным графиком.

Ранее сообщалось, что Клэптон уже дал принципиальное согласие на концерт в Северной Корее в 2009 году. Напомним, что 26 февраля в Пхеньяне выступил Нью-Йоркский симфонический оркестр. Это событие стало первым выступлением западного симфонического коллектива в истории КНДР. Концерт Клэптона должен был стать первым выступлением западного рок-музыканта в КНДР, где запрещены поп- и рок-музыка.

Представители всемирно известного английского гитариста Эрика Клэптона официально отвергли возможность проведения его концертов в северокорейской столице. Это стало известно из ответа, которое последовало на письмо по электронной почте, направленное ранее южнокорейской телерадиовещательной компанией "Эм-Би-Си" в офис артиста.

Напомним, что 26 февраля влиятельная газета "Файнэншнл Таймс" в своей заметке утверждала, что КНДР пытаются организовать концерты Клэптона в Пхеньяне. Хотя пока, как говорилось в публикации, гитарист не дал официального ответа, но в действительности он выразил согласие. Однако полученное официальное письмо полностью опровергает такую возможность. В послании, в частности, говорится, что "все эти заявления являются безосновательными - никаких планов провединия концертов в Пхеньяне у нас нет".

Слухи от возможности проведения серии культурных мероприятий в КНДР стали появляться после того, как недавно в Пхеньяне прошли успешные выступления Нью-йоркского симфонического оркестра. Как известно, второй сын лидера КНДР Ким Чен Ира Ким Чжон Чхоль является большим поклонником творчества Эрика Клэптона. Как сообщалось, представители КНДР через свое посольство в Великобритании пытались организовать выступления гитариста в Северной Корее. Это сразу же породило спекуляции по поводу того, что, возможно, КНДР наконец начала открываться хотя бы для культурного обмена с международным сообществом.

A few days ago, the talk of the Garrick Arms pub wasn't about the rare earthquake that shook London. It wasn't about protesters who had somehow gotten on the roof of the Parliament building. It wasn't about soccer.

It was about Eric Clapton performing in Pyongyang.

"Can you imagine — Clapton playing 'Cocaine' in North Korea?" proclaimed James Dorsey, a 32-year-old London stockbroker, as Clapton's "Bad Love" played overhead. "Of all the crazy things out there, this has got to be up there."

Added 29-year-old accountant Abby Wheeler: "Who knew Kim Jong Il was a rock fan? Well, at least the North Korean government is into decent music."

The New York Philharmonic Orchestra may have a similar take on things after its historic performance in Pyongyang this week. It was the largest group of Americans to visit the reclusive state since the Korean War.

Its musicians aren't used to being an opening act. Having to play second fiddle to anyone would come as a surprise to music director Lorin Maazel. Yet a visit by Clapton, who has been invited to play in Pyongyang next year, would raise the bar.

It's a reach to say rock "n' roll will be instrumental in talks over Kim's nuclear programs. Yet it's amazing to think that "Slowhand" will be rocking a place where such music is banned. Few influences are more Western than the sounds of guitar gods like Clapton. Diplomats see the overture as a sign North Korea wants to build cultural bridges with the West, and maybe more.

Banned songs?

As Clapton ponders his Pyongyang set list, one wonders which tunes the 62-year-old won't be allowed to play. After all, China wouldn't let the Rolling Stones perform "Brown Sugar," "Beast of Burden," "Let's Spend the Night Together," "Honky Tonk Woman" or "Rough Justice" in 2006. Rapper Jay-Z wasn't allowed to perform in Shanghai last year.

For all their control-freak tendencies, Chinese officials aren't nearly as paranoid as North Korean leader Kim. So let's think aloud about how he may view Clapton's back catalog.

First, the songs Kim might not want to hear in Pyongyang:

"I Feel Free." Well, I certainly feel free, Kim might be thinking. Not that he'd want his 23 million people feeling liberated. Then again, Kim could spin the song as an anti-American tirade — as in it's good to feel free from George W. Bush.

Sheriff Kim

"Change the World." Change the world? The communist leader might ask himself. What?!?!?! To hell with that!

"I Shot the Sheriff." Kim wouldn't want his impoverished masses getting any such ideas in their heads. He's the only sheriff north of the 38th parallel. And there's no doubt that in his mind, there won't be any shooting at the man who commands the fifth-largest standing army.

"My Father's Eyes." While giant portraits of Kim are found throughout North Korea, many concert goers this week wore badges with a portrait of his father: Kim Il Sung. From Korea's founding until his death in 1994, Kim Il Sung was called Great Leader. It's quite a legacy to live up to North Korea's "Forever Man." Would Kim want to be seen as looking through daddy's eyes?

"Let It Grow"

"Peaches and Diesel." It's never good to remind millions of what they can't get their hands on. Here, Clapton might also be banned from playing "Let It Grow," which some might take as a political statement about the dismal economy or a reference to the nation's lack of agricultural prowess.

"Knockin' on Heaven's Door." The debate about which son will replace Kim, 67, rages on amid reports of failing health. One thing seems certain: The odds are stacked against the son who was arrested in Japan in 2001. He's the Einstein who tried to visit Tokyo Disneyland on a Dominican Republic passport.

Now for the songs Kim might like to hear in Pyongyang:

"Bell Bottom Blues." Kim isn't a man distracted by the latest fashion trends. With his khaki jumpsuit and bouffant hair-do, he makes Fidel Castro seem downright dapper. Kim may welcome an ode to fashions from a more sepia-toned time, comforting him that he looks "Wonderful Tonight."

"On My Knees"

"River of Tears." This number might remind North Koreans that they enjoy the best quality of life and to live anywhere else would be nothing but a constant source of hardship and sorrow. Kim's spin brings to mind Clapton's tune "It's in the Way That You Use It."

"I Can't Stand It." The spirit of this Clapton ditty was captured by the South Park guys in their 2004 film "Team America." It's still hard for me to think of the Dear Leader without picturing him singing "I'm So Lonely."

"Layla." Kim may find special meaning in the "you've got me on my knees" line. That's where he has his population and, arguably, the Bush administration, which has bungled the North Korea issue. It could make for the perfect encore in Pyongyang. There's just one downside here: The song is reportedly also on Bush's iPod. Talk about shuffle diplomacy.
