The multiple characters that David Bowie inhabited throughout his career and his general versatility as an artist will be celebrated as part of a new exhibition at London’s famous Victoria and Albert Museum. The V&A is set to open a new attraction which will showcase more than 90,000 pieces of Bowie memorabilia.
The new section of the V&A in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will be quite the celebration of music. Not only will this site be the location of the new David Bowie Centre, but it will also house the Glastonbury Festival archive, which will showcase images and memorabilia from the festival over the last 54 years.
The Bowie exhibition’s highlights include handwritten lyrics by the late icon. These include his scribblings for classic songs such as ‘Fame’, ‘Ashes to Ashes’ and ‘Heroes’. There will also be costumes that Bowie wore throughout the Ziggy Stardust period of his life.
Bowie was an incredibly creative musician, who wasn’t content with just making music under one guise. Subsequently, throughout his career, he adopted multiple personas and wrote from various points of view, including Major Tom, Ziggy Stardust, and Aladdin Sane. His costumes, designs, and various other artefacts from his creation and embodiment of these characters will be on display at the exhibition.
Bowie passed away from cancer on January 10th, 2016. This occurred just two days after he released his final album, Blackstar, which took on a much deeper meaning following the singer’s death.
The archive is possible because the V&A recently acquired Bowie’s archive with the help of Bowie’s estate, Warner Music Group and the Blavatnik Family Foundation. There is still a while to wait before fans can see the exhibition, though, as it isn’t set to open until September 13th, 2025.
Tim Reeve, the deputy director of the V&A, is excited about the opening of the new storehouse in East London and the Bowie exhibition. He said in a statement, “Delivers on our ambition to create a new standard for access to national collections, in an area of London with such a rich creative heritage and vibrant and talented creative community.”
