Ринго Старр, Лу Рид, Green Day, Джоан Джетт и Стиви Рей Вон будут включены в Зал Славы Рок-н-ролла в 2015 году

Объявлены имена тех, кто в 2015 году будет включен в Зал Славы Рок-н-ролла: этой чести будут удостоены Лу Рид (Lou Reed, посмертно), Green Day, Стиви Рей Вон (Stevie Ray Vaughan), Джоан Джетт (Joan Jett), Билл Уизерс (Bill Withers), The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Ринго Старр (Ringo Starr), который уже в списке лауреатов на правах одного из "битлов", также получит специальную награду - за музыкальное превосходство (Award For Musical Excellence). Ringo Starr is among this year's names for the Class of 2015 inductees into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, the Rock Hall announced Dec. 16. Starr is being honored with the Award for Musical Excellence, the Hall said. "My goodness! I'm so excited, he told Rolling Stone magazine. "We'll have a very nice evening and it'll be my pleasure to receive the award."

The complete list of nominees also includes The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Green Day, Joan Jett & and The Blackhearts, Lou Reed, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble and Bill Withers in the Performer Category and The Five Royales receiving the Early Influences Award. The inductees were chosen by a voting body of more than 700 artists, historians and members of the music industry, the Hall said.

“As we mark 30 years of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductions, we're proud to honor these artists, said Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation President Joel Peresman. “These inductions epitomize rock and roll's impact over the past 50 years and continuing through today."

The 30th annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place April 18 at Cleveland's Public Hall. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Dec. 18 and will be available through Ticketmaster. Prices for tickets will be $75, $150 and $300, the Hall said.

Ringo's induction as a solo Beatle makes him the last group member to be so honored individually. John Lennon was the first of the group to be inducted as a solo Beatle in 1994, Paul McCartney followed in 1999 and then George Harrison in 2004. The Beatles were inducted as a group in 1988. Just last year, Brian Epstein and Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham received the Ahmet Ertegun Award for Lifetime Achievement and were inducted in 2014.

Я не понимаю, Ринго введут в члены Зал Славы Рок-н-ролла, или ему всего-лишь дадут премию "Award For Musical Excellence"?

Не зря я голосовал за Green Day! Билли Джо - классный!

Commentary: The Rock Hall’s inconsistencies shine through

Beatles drummer Ringo Starr is being given a special award for musical excellence. He anchored the Beatles' sound and had a productive solo career, even beating his former mates to the top of the charts. He continues to record and tour with a revolving All-Starr Band. The Beatles are already in the hall, as are John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison as solo artists.

Apparently, when you’re an ex-Beatle, they bend the rules for you.

Ringo Starr was not a nominee for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2015. But he’ll be an inductee - along with Green Day, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Lou Reed, Bill Withers, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble and The “5” Royales - receiving the honorary Award for Musical Excellence.

What’s that you say? Isn’t regular induction into the hall an award for musical excellence? Yes, but this special category was created to recognize those who contributed to rock ‘n’ roll without being headline attractions. According to the hall’s website, RockHall.com, it’s for “musicians, producers and others who have spent their careers out of the spotlight working with major artists on various parts of their recording and live careers. Though they often play a key role in the creation of memorable music, the public rarely knows them by name.”

The E Street Band was honored in this category, for instance, this year, for their contributions to Bruce Springsteen’s work. (Springsteen entered the hall alone, in 1999.) In 2012, awards in this category went to producers Tom Dowd, Glyn Johns and Cosimo Matassa.

But Starr is a Hall of Famer already, as a member of the Beatles, and post-Beatles, he’s been a solo artist. (John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison already have been inducted as solo artists.) It makes absolutely no sense that he is being given this award.

But then, a lot of things about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame make no sense.

Nine Inch Nails, for instance, would seem to have all the credentials for first-ballot induction: musical innovation, a huge influence on other artists, major commercial success, longevity. They were nominated, but not selected. And yet the hall has a place for The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, who made some undeniably great music but lasted for less than a decade, never had a Top 40 single or album, and specialized in a style of music (Chicago blues) that was created by others.

Also failing to make it past the nominees stage this year: Sting (who is already in as a member of The Police), The Spinners, The Smiths, War, Kraftwerk, Chic, The Marvelettes and N.W.A.

And arguably, the list of artists who didn’t get nominated is even more stellar: Bon Jovi, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Yes, Willie Nelson, Chicago, The Moody Blues, Soundgarden, Jethro Tull.

Of course, that’s not meant to disparage the accomplishment of the inductees.

Green Day’s punk-rock brattiness made them, initially, an unlikely candidate for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But their songwriting was always first-rate, and they grew in ways that no one expected, changing gears for the power ballad “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” writing rock operas (“American Idiot,” “21st Century Breakdown”) and headlining crowd-pleasing stadium shows. “We’re in incredible company and I’m still trying to make sense of this,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told RollingStone.com, about hearing that Green Day will be inducted.

While Green Day is a rare example of a band making it into the hall in its first year of eligibility, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble have been eligible since 2009, and often have been cited as one of the hall’s most egregious oversights. From their 1983 debut “Texas Flood” to Vaughan’s 1990 death in a helicopter accident, they did more than anyone else to bring raw, uncompromising blues-rock to the masses, while also earning the love and respect of blues purists.

Joan Jett made her first splash as a member of the all-female band, The Runaways, and released one of her signature songs, “Bad Reputation,” as a solo artist, but peaked, commercially, as the leader of The Blackhearts, with songs such as “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” and “I Hate Myself for Loving You.” She’s been eligible since 2006; perhaps she swayed voters with her well-received performance at this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Though overshadowed by his ex-bandmates, Ringo Starr had an impressive string of hits in the ‘70s, including chart-toppers “You’re Sixteen” and “Photograph,” and has toured steadily for the last 25 years as the leader of his own ever-changing All-Starr Band.

Lou Reed, like Starr, is already in the hall (as a member of The Velvet Underground) but is being recognized for his solo career, which ranged from his biggest single (“Walk on the Wild Side”) to his most abrasive, experimental work (“Metal Machine Music”) and one of the all-time-great rock concert albums (“Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal”). A lifelong New Yorker who also maintained a second home in Blairstown in the 1980s, Reed died in 2013, at 71.

Best known for his warm, soulful hits “Lean on Me” and “Ain’t No Sunshine,” Bill Withers was a constant presence on the pop and R&B charts from the early ‘70s to the late ‘80s, though he has rarely been in the public eye since then.

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, led by singer and harmonica player Butterfield, started as a tough, no-nonsense Chicago blues outfit in the mid-’60s, then expanded its sound with elements of jazz and Eastern music. It was one of the few acts to perform at the two most important rock festivals of the ‘60s, Monterey Pop and Woodstock. Members included guitarists Mike Bloomfield - who also did groundbreaking work with Bob Dylan, The Electric Flag and others - and Elvin Bishop.

The “5” Royales will be inducted in the Early Influence category. They were a North Carolina-based R&B group that had hits such as “Dedicated to the One I Love,” “Tell the Truth” and “Think” in the ‘50s.

The induction ceremony will take place at Public Hall in Cleveland on April 18. According to posts on RollingStone.com, Paul McCartney will be on hand to give Starr his award, and Withers is considering coming out of retirement to perform at the event.
