Elton Gets First 'Brotherly Love' Award
Award Recognizes Johns Efforts Regarding AIDS

PHILADELPHIA -- City officials honored Sir Elton John on Monday at Independence Hall.

Philadelphia's Mayor John Street presented the British entertainer with the city's first-ever Philadelphia City of Brotherly Love Award.

It honors John's efforts to improve the plight of people around the world living with AIDS or HIV.

"I am truly pround to be here as a British person who loves America so much," John said during the ceremony.

Over a dozen years ago, the performer founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation. The international non-profit group funds HIV and AIDS prevention and care services around the globe.

John says his ambition is to eradicate AIDS.

As John sang along, students from First Philadelphia Charter School serenade him with the city's anthem, "Philadelphia Freedom," which was written and originally performed by John.

The tributes did not end there. John met with an HIV survivor and posed for photos outside the William Way Community Center for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community.

The street sign there now bears the name Elton's Way.

John is in Philadelphia, fresh from performing at Saturday's Live 8 concert in London.

He was the headliner for the free Philadelphia Freedom Concert on Monday night.

Elton John was on hand just a little over 24 hours after he peformed in the Live 8 concert in London.

After accepting the humanitarian award, John told the crowd that it is his mission to eradicate AIDS and HIV.

John went on to the Community Center for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community and hugged some survivors of the disease.

John was touched by the center, which epitomizes his effort to eradicate AIDS.

A street was also named in John's honor on the Fourth of July.

Elton John to Write With Joss Stone

Sir Elton John is planning on recording a Christmas song with Joss Stone later this month.

The superstar told of his recording plans to Ian 'Molly' Meldrum backstage at the Live 8 concert last weekend in London.

Sir Elton said that as well as the new song with Joss, he is also recording with BB King, Patti LaBelle and will also perform a tribute to the late Luther Vandross.

Also this week, he will release his new single 'Electricity' from the Billy Elliott musical.

John wrote the soundtrack to the musical based on the hit movie which is now being performed at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London.

His previous theatrical successes were The Lion King and AIDA. Elton is also working on a score for the stage show The Vampire Lestat.

Halloween Night's Alright

Elton John will help celebrate Bette Midler's 60th birthday by performing in New York at this year's Hulaween event, being held to benefit Midler's nonprofit New York Restoration Project. Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler, will receive the Wind Beneath My Wings Award during the Oct. 31 gala.

Elton John adds country feather to cap

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - It was just a couple of weeks ago that Elton John generated chart news by scoring two simultaneous top five singles in the U.K.

This week Elton adds another first-time accomplishment to his long list of chart achievements by making his initial appearance on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart. It's a case of a Brit helping a Britt.

On one of his tours of Australia, Elton heard a recording by a teenaged singer from Newcastle, Catherine Britt, and invited her to one of his shows in Sydney. Backstage after the show, he asked if she was interested in signing with an American record label. Britt told Elton she didn't have any contacts in the United States and didn't know where to start. The next day, thanks to Elton, she had three label offers and within a week she was in Nashville, signing with RCA.

Britt made her debut on the Hot Country Songs list with "The Upside of Being Down," which opened at No. 57 the week of Aug. 14, 2004, and peaked at No. 36 the week of Nov. 13. Now 20, she sees her second chart entry, a duet with Elton on "Where We Both Say Goodbye," opening at No. 49.

While this marks Elton's first appearance on the country chart as an artist, he has previously been listed on the survey as a songwriter. Coincidentally, Tim McGraw's version of "Tiny Dancer" peaked at No. 49, the week of Feb. 15, 2003.

Elton John to Perform Outside Colosseum

ROME - Elton John will take the stage just outside the Colosseum in September, Rome officials said on Friday. The free Sept. 3 concert will take place on the Via dei Fori Imperiali, the large boulevard that leads to the Colosseum and is lined with ancient Roman relics.

Last year, a concert there by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel drew hundreds of thousands of fans.

"It will be a great event ... held in the most charming scenery in the world," Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni told a news conference.

"I can't wait to meet my fans in Rome for a unique musical happening," John said in a video broadcast during the conference. "It is so exciting."

ELTON'S DISMAY AT PEACHTREE ROAD SALES

SIR ELTON JOHN is disappointed his 2004 album PEACHTREE ROAD was only modestly successful, but accepts people may just be tiring of him after nearly four decades in the music business.

The PHILADELPHIA FREEDOM singer received decent reviews for Peachtree Road, with many writers hailing it as a return to his 1970s form, but the flattering write-ups didn't transfer into huge sales.

He says, "It is probably one of my lowest-selling albums of all time.

"It was disappointing everywhere in the world, so I have to hold my hands up and accept that the songs just didn't connect.

"I'm proud of Peachtree but, if I think about it logically, people may have 10 or 12 Elton John albums in their collection already. Do they really need another one?"

A two-CD version of Elton John's 1975 Captain Fantastic and the Dirt Brown Cowboy album will be issued Sept. 13. The deluxe-edition release will contain several bonus tracks, as well as performances from a June 1975 concert at London's Wembley Stadium during which John played Captain Fantastic in its entirety. He again plans to perform the whole album next month at a few shows in Boston and New York.

ELTON JOHN PLANNING 'CAPTAIN FANTASTIC' SEQUEL

With a 30th anniversary edition of Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy due out in September, word comes that Elton John is planning a sequel to one of his most famous albums. John plans to start work on the project in early 2006 with lyricist Bernie Taupin and guitarist Davey Johnstone, though no release date or actual title has yet been determined. The first Captain Fantastic hit Number One on the Billboard Top 200 in 1975 and has sold three million copies.

A deluxe two-CD version of Captain Fantastic, featuring a 1975 live show from London, comes out September 13th.

John and his band plan to perform Captain Fantastic in its entirety on September 16th and 17th at the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston and September 21st, 23rd and 24th at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

John begins the next run of his The Red Piano show in Las Vegas on October 4th at The Colosseum in Caesars Palace.

SMOKEY ROBINSON & BARRY MANILOW TO HONOR ELTON JOHN AT ELLA AWARDS

Elton John has been announced as the recipient of the 12th annual ELLA Award, named after the late jazz great Ella Fitzgerald. The ELLA Award is given to singers for their contribution to music and global humanitarian efforts. The ceremony, which takes place on October 10th in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, will feature performances of John's music by previous ELLA recipient Barry Manilow, along with Smokey Robinson, k.d. Lang, Lulu, and many others. Tickets are priced between $600 and $2,500, with all proceeds to benefit the non-profit Society Of Singers.

The Society Of Singers was founded in 1984 and aids musicians in need of emergency financial help, as well as well as offering scholarship programs designed to advance the vocal arts.

Previous recipients of the ELLA Award -- besides Fitzgerald herself -- include Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett, and Celine Dion.

Elton Agenda: Sitcoms, Sequels, Musicals

With deference to James Brown, Elton John may be the hardest-working man in show business. In addition to his ongoing touring schedule and his "The Red Piano" engagement in Las Vegas, John is working on a number of projects, highlighted by a new studio album to be released in 2007.

For that project, he and longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin are writing a sequel to "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" called "Captain Fantastic and the Kid." The first edition, released in 1975, covered the pair's first 30 years; the second will cover the subsequent 30 years and will come out March 20, 2007, five days before John's 60th birthday.

"I'm starting writing and recording it in Atlanta in January," John tells Billboard. "It was [Sanctuary Group CEO Merck Mercuriadis'] idea, because he said, 'You're always saying how Bernie has become the Brown Dirt Cowboy' -- he lives on a ranch in Santa Ynez [Calif.] -- and I'm this guy who plays concert after concert, buying art, buying photographs, living a very lavish lifestyle. I've become Captain Fantastic."

"We would have been together then about 40 years by the time it comes out," John continues. "One of the things I'm most proud of in my life is the relationship I've had with Bernie."

Beforehand, John will on Nov. 8 release "Elton's Christmas Party" exclusively through Starbucks. The disc will include previously released holiday-themed songs from other artists, plus a new duet between John and Joss Stone. A $2 donation from each album will go to the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

And while "Billy Elliot," a musical written by John and Lee Hall, continues playing on London's West End (a Broadway opening is planned for 2006), the John/Taupin-penned musical "Lestat" is scheduled to debut in December at San Francisco's Curran Theater. The project is based on Anne Rice's "Vampire Lestat" series.

As previously reported, John has a development deal with Touchstone Television for a sitcom about a rock star and his entourage. "Sex & the City" scribe Cindy Chupack is writing the pilot.

Meanwhile, last March, John wrote nine songs with Scissor Sisters for possible inclusion on their next album, marking the first time he had ever written in the same room with someone.

"You know, I'm 15 years sober today," says John when asked how he finds time for all these projects. "That's changed my life. The energy that I used to spend doing drugs and everything, I spend doing great things, like getting up in the morning, going to Tower Records, trying to find new acts, trying to promote them. I have the most fantastic life. I really love it so much."

Music Queen Sir Elton John has unveiled plans to write a sitcom based around the misdemeanours of his youth.

The project, titled Him And Us centres around the lives of Elton and his rock pals Mick Jagger, David Bowie and Rod Stewart. The main character is Max Flash, a demanding rock star with a long suffering entourage.

The tales of their rock n roll antics are a far cry from the healthy lifestyle that Elton leads nowadays: 'You know, I'm 15 years sober today. That's changed my life,' he told Femalefirst.com.

'The energy that I used to spend doing drugs and everything, I spend doing great things, like getting up in the morning, going to Tower Records, trying to find new acts, trying to promote them. '

Elton obviously leads a charmed life, continuing to gush 'I have the most fantastic life. I really love it so much.'
