Tom Petty: "Some years ago, George asked me to speak and present him with a Billboard Lifetime achievement award. He began his acceptance speech by saying 'I'm sure being in the Beatles has not been a hindrance to my solo career.' (audience laughs). He was first inducted into this great hall as a member of the Beatles and tonight he receives a second nomination as a solo artist (audience claps). Having stood onstage and off between Lennon and McCartney is a really tough spot for an aspiring songwriter. Yet learning his craft he grew into an excellent writer, coming up with classics like "Something" "Here Comes the Sun" and many more. He became so prolific that he began to stockpile large amounts of unreleased songs and this became the basis for his first solo album "All Things Must Pass." (audience claps) Which was the first number one album by an ex-Beatle, (audience claps again) and many more hits would come. He often said he wasn't pursuing a solo career at all, he never hired a manager and he never had an agent. He just loved playing music with his friends and he love guitars and he loved rock & roll and he loved Carl Perkins and he loved Little Richard and he love Dhani and Olivia (applause). He loved to stay up all night long and play the Ukelele til dawn, til the kids were all in bed and tucked away. Throughout the eighties he hit number one again with his "Cloud Nine" LP and then he formed what he called his other band the Traveling Wilburys (applause). That was with Jeff Lynne and myself and some other guys (laughter). But George really was a man who lived every single minute of his life, he really filled a room, he was an upbeat person. He had a very keen sense of humor, a very keen sense of spirit. He was never preachy, he led by example. Years before Live Aid, George invented the idea of rock and roll giving back to the people (applause). As I look around I know many of you in the room knew him. He was my dear friend and yours and the world's. He achieved much more than being a successful artist, he was a truly great man (applause). And so we're gonna put him in the hall of fame, we're gonna induct him. We're gonna push him right in there (laughter). But I need you all to say "Hare Krishna." (audience says Hare Krishna) "He's in there!"

Speech from Jeff Lynne (after Tom): "Hello, George was a great friend of mine and we used to hang out a lot and make lots of records. Knowing George as well as I did, he's probably watching tonight and saying 'Get on with it.' (laughter) So I'd just like to say, welcome mate, you're in the hall of fame, where you belong and it's about time (applause). And now we're gonna bring up Olivia and Dhani Harrison. (Olivia and Dhani stand up and walk to the front while "This is Love" plays on the loudspeakers and the audience applauds).

Dhani: "Dad actually came back in 1987, from when he got the last one of these. (Pointing at award & looking at his mom) And I never told you this, but I broke it (Olivia and the audience laugh) and I glued the bit back in and no one noticed. Uh, he made a great, oh actually Mick made a great speech, in 87, where he referred to the Beatles as the four headed monster and, uh, when they were inducted. And, uh, he told me lots of great stories about my dad and that night. And I'd just like to say thanks to all of his mates, you know, who he loved to see. To all the guys for coming and playing and to the hall of fame for having him in again. And to, yeah, everyone who's ever loved his music. Good on ya, Cheers."

Olivia: "Oh, here I go again. I could talk about George, you know, forever, but I won't. There was a quote by Indian Poet Tigor that George read to me one day, he said, "Blessed is he who's fame has not outshined his truth." Here we are in the hall of fame, but the inductees are not chosen because of their fame but because they expressed their truth through their music. George said that he tried to write songs that would still mean something years from now. I think it's safe to say that in spite his immense fame, his truth would never be outshined and forgotten. (everyone claps and cheers) Good. If he were here, you know, he'd get a kick out of tonight. He'd be trying to see everybody and party. But uh, there probably would be a lot of people he'd thank. You know if you think of the span of his entire career, there'd just be so many people who are in this room tonight that he would want to mention, but I'm going to mention one, that I'm sure of. It's the person in this room that George knew the longest in his life. That he met behind the air raid shelter when he was sneaking off to have a ciggie at school. Someone who looked after him and all of them, from the time they were thirteen until, for George, the end of his life and that's the mysterious Neil Aspinall." (Neil stands as everyone applauds) "Because...thank you Neil for holding it together for all of these years because really, the whole phenomenon might not have happened or stayed together as long as it did without him. You know, he helped us, he helped his family and George loved him dearly and, and uh, many of you as well. So thank very much and let's let the music speak for itself." (everyone applauds as Olivia exits the stage with the award and as Dhani goes over to play "Handle With Care with Tom & Jeff)

На When my guitar... NEW YORK (Billboard) - U2, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Randy Newman and the O'Jays are among the nominees for the 2005 induction class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

They are joined on the ballot by the Pretenders, Buddy Guy, Wanda Jackson, the J. Geils Band, Conway Twitty and Percy Sledge.

The Sex Pistols, the Stooges, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the late Gram Parsons were previously nominated but remain on this year's ballot.

Along with an impressive slate of inductees, this year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony will boast some impressive star power in the form of Justin Timberlake, Bruce Springsteen, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart and Neil Young, who will present the honorees. The March 14 ceremony at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel will be filmed by VH1, which will air highlights on a March 19 special.

Although official designations have not been announced by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, Springsteen will reportedly induct U2, a reversal of Bono's rhapsodic speech welcoming the Boss into the hall in 1999. Timberlake is said to be handling honors for the O'Jays, while blues legend Buddy Guy will be immortalized at the hands of King and Clapton.

Stewart, meanwhile, will reportedly induct Percy Sledge, while Young pay tribute to the Pretenders. The class of 2005 also includes non-performer honorees Premier Talent Agency founder Frank Barsalona and Sire Records founder Seymour Stein.

U2, Pretenders Join Rock's Hall of Fame at NY GalaU2, Pretenders Join Rock's Hall of Fame at NY Gala

Tue Mar 15, 7:02 AM ET Entertainment - Reuters

By Mark Egan

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Irish rockers U2 were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, led by their charismatic singer Bono, whose work on behalf of Africa's poor has also earned him status as a political statesman.

Reuters Photo

The 20th annual ceremony on Monday night at New York's Waldorf Astoria hotel also honored The Pretenders, led by singer-guitarist Chrissie Hynde, soul veterans Percy Sledge and The O'Jays as well as blues-guitar great Buddy Guy as members of rock's elite.

"(U2) are the keepers of some of the most beautiful sonic architecture in the rock-and-roll world," said rocker Bruce Springsteen while inducting U2.

Bono, a born-again Christian, was a highlight of the Live Aid concert for Ethiopian famine relief in 1985 and has since campaigned tirelessly for the world's poor.

This led to gossip that the Bush administration was considering him as the next head of the World Bank, but the singer again dismissed the idea at a post-gala press conference.

"Don't quit your day job yet my friend, you're pretty good at it," Springsteen joked of the speculation about Bono, whom he called a "plain operator" and a "crazy Irishman."

Bono, who inducted Springsteen in 1999, said as Monday night became Tuesday morning, "This is a bit of an Irish wedding ... beautiful girls and beautiful frocks and fights in the bathroom."

SALES-OBSESSED

He then urged music executives to rethink how they do business, saying in the current sales-obsessed climate U2 would have been dumped during a slump after their second record, "October," which included overtly religious songs.

"There would be no U2 the way things are now, that's a fact," he said. Stars such as Springsteen and Neil Young, who also failed to have early hits, also would have failed to make the grade with today's music companies, he said.

Founded in Dublin in 1978, U2 penned political songs such as "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and uplifting rockers like "Where the Streets Have No Name." They are now touring North America to promote their latest chart-topping album.

As the band played, Bono sang at first amid the tables, taking champagne from one table and dousing his band mates. Renditions of "Pride," about civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and their recent hit "Vertigo" brought the crowd to their feet.

The Dublin quartet - Bono, guitarist The Edge, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer and heartthrob Larry Mullin Jr. -- broke through with 1987's "The Joshua Tree" and became one of the world's most successful rock acts, with recordings and elaborately-staged tours which sought to always explore new ground.

"I'm just not sure I'm ready to accept institutionalization," Mullin said after the ceremony. "If I'm to be really honest I would have liked this 10 years down the line."

Nominees must have a 25-year recording history and are chosen by a group of industry insiders, leading some critics each year to complain about the bands left out.

TRIBUTE

The Pretenders, with hits like "Brass in Pocket" and "Back on the Chain Gang," and U2 burst on the scene in the aftermath of the punk-rock explosion in the late 1970s.

"We're paying tribute tonight to James Honeyman-Scott and Pete Farndon, without them we wouldn't be here," Hynde said, referring to two original members who died of drug abuse in the early 1980s.

"Without us, they might have been here, but that's rock and roll," she said, before she joined her band to play a high-octane set.

The O'Jays, with matching suits and choreographed dance moves, formed in the late 1950s. They dominated the 1970s soul scene with such hits as "Love Train," "I Love Music (Part 1)" and "For the Love of Money," now the theme tune for the hit reality TV show, "The Apprentice."

Sledge had his biggest hit in 1966 with "When a Man Loves a Woman." He told black-tie crowd how he honed the song while improvising on stage. "I never in my life thought I could go so far on that one sentence," he said.

Guy has been at the forefront of Chicago blues since the 1960s, influencing legends from Jimi Hendrix to Eric Clapton.

"If you don't think you've got the blues, just keep living, and if you don't think you're drunk, just keep drinking what you're drinking," Guy said before donning his guitar to play with Clapton and B.B. King.

U2 Headlines 2005 Rock Hall of Fame U2 Headlines 2005 Rock Hall of Fame

NEW YORK - Minutes after being officially bumped up to legendary status after a raucous, sentimental induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, U2 headed to the media room to answer questions about their momentous honor.

But perhaps only a rock band fronted by Bono would first be asked about everything but music.

"Bono! ... What about the Nobel Peace Prize?" one reporter called out, asking whether his mission to eradicate third-world debt would get him the honor.

"Rock star is already having the cream of the cake," Bono replied.

Another wondered whether he would assume the presidency of the World Bank, as the latest Bono-leading-the-free-world rumor would suggest.

Over U2's 30-year journey from the streets of Dublin, Ireland, to becoming the world's most important rock band, there have been times when Bono's charisma, his charitable efforts — and now a fashion line — have eclipsed his collaborators and lifelong friends: guitarist The Edge, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr.

But on Monday evening, their rock peers recognized the collaborative achievements of perhaps the most groundbreaking rock group in the past two decades.

"Uno, dos, tres, catorce," said Bruce Springsteen (news), quoting the Spanish countdown in U2's recent hit, "Vertigo," as he inducted the band into the rock hall with a loving, humorous tribute.

"The translation is one, two, three, fourteen. That is the correct math for rock 'n' roll. The whole had better equal a lot more than the sum of its parts — or else you're just rubbing two sticks together."

On a night when The Pretenders, The O'Jays, Percy Sledge and blues legend Buddy Guy received keys to rock's exclusive club, U2 was clearly the star attraction.

"They are the keepers of some of the most beautiful sonic orchestration in rock and roll," Springsteen said.

Though they weren't inducted until after midnight, the ballroom was still packed. And when they performed some of their biggest hits, including "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" with an assist from Springsteen — everyone, from celebrities such as Catherine Zeta-Jones to grizzled industry folk, jumped out of their seats to cheer them on.

Highlights of the induction ceremony will air Saturday on VH1. Hall of fame members are permanently enshrined in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Musicians, industry professionals and journalists vote on the inductees.

U2's induction was hardly the evening's only highlight.

The O'Jays are best known for their work with Philadelphia soul producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, but the gospel-styled singers are actually from Canton, Ohio. Their hits include "Back Stabbers," "Love Train" and "For the Love of Money."

After film clips showed them in wild tuxedos during the 1970s, the quartet wore simple black suits to perform a medley including each of those songs.

They were inducted by Justin Timberlake. "Anyone who's ever written, produced or performed something soulful stands in the shadows of these giants," he said.

If nothing else, Sledge's voice has been the backdrop to countless romantic encounters. The Southern soul singer is best known for "When a Man Loves a Woman."

Rod Stewart (news) called it "one of the best performances I've ever heard and I'm sure you've ever heard."

The Pretenders came from the same rock generation as U2. Ohio native Chrissie Hynde (news) was a tough but tender role model for women, singing "Brass in Pocket," "Precious" and "Back on the Chain Gang."

The band formed after Hynde moved to London to be part of the city's fertile music scene. She's soldiered on, with drummer Martin Chambers, after guitarists James Honeyman-Scott and Pete Farndon died as drug casualties.

"They went through all the heartache that rock 'n' roll is built on — they lost two band members and they never gave up," said Neil Young, who inducted the band and sat in for a ferocious performance of "My City Was Gone."

Hynde told the audience she knows The Pretenders have sounded like a tribute band for the past 20 years. "We are a tribute band," she said. "We're paying tribute to James Honeyman-Scott and Pete Farndon, without whom we would not have been here."

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of rock 'n' roll, the hall — also celebrating its 20th induction dinner — brought Bo Diddley in to perform the Bo Diddley beat with fellow guitarists Eric Clapton and Robbie Robertson.

Now a stooped old man, Jerry Lee Lewis moved slowly to the stage to perform "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On." But he still managed to kick over his stool and sit on the piano keys.

Guy dominated the Chicago blues guitar scene, and he was ushered into the hall by Clapton and B.B. King. Later, both joined Guy onstage for a rollicking rendition of "Let Me Love You Baby."

Backstage, Guy noted: "My mother told me before she died ... if you've got any flowers, give 'em to me now, so I can smell 'em. So y'all give this to me tonight, I can smell this, man!"

The dinner offered a clash of celebrity cultures: Mariah Carey breezed in, offering a brief kiss to ex-husband Tommy Mottola. Richard Gere (news) shared a laugh with King. The Edge checked his Blackberry during The O'Jays' performance.

Frank Barsalona, credited with creating the first big rock 'n' roll booking agency, and Sire Records founder Seymour Stein were inducted in the nonperformer category.
