HELP

Q Magazine

Tom Doyle interviews Paul McCartney for Q's 20th Anniversary Special (November 2006 issue)

Q + A: Paul McCartney Beatle

Q: How are you?

PAUL: I'm well. I'm enjoying my music.

Q: Where are you right now?

PAUL: A photo studio in Kentish Town, London.

Q: You were the first Q cover star. What does Q mean to you?

PAUL: Oh, y'know... cool magazine. It's strange looking at the first copy now. It looks so old-fashioned. But it looked very smart and modern and groovy then.

Q: What's the best thing you've ever seen in Q?

PAUL: There was a nice thing in the original issue on Dylan, who's pretty elusive. Here he was just chatting.

Q: What were you doing 20 years ago?

PAUL: You know what, I'm terrible on what I was doing when. Beatles fans can tell you exactly what was going on in the '60s and I go, "Oh yeah, that's right." I don't actually know what year The Beatles started. I couldn't tell you, man. Sgt. Pepper was '67, I know that much.

Q: 1986 was Press To Play...

PAUL: That's right. Q gave it a good review. I thought, "Aw, bless 'em." Cos I don't think it's that good an album.

Q: What's been your high point of the last 20 years?

PAUL: Live 8 was pretty cool. Concert For New York for 9/11, pretty cool. The Mexico City gig [in November 2002] was unbelievable. The warmth coming off these 30,000 Mexicans was overpowering. [Mock breathlessness] I couldn't sing for the emotion of it.

Q: And the low point?

PAUL: Linda dying. Undoubtedly.

Q: What was the first album you bought on CD?

PAUL: Wow. I don't know, man. We made our first recordings to two- track stereo and we used to take home a shellac acetate. Then came tape cassettes. Then we went through CDs and MiniDiscs and DATs. To me it's just a series of new ways to hear your music.

Q: And the first track you downloaded?

PAUL: I haven't ever downloaded a track. Never. I've got an iPod nano. But the earphones remind me of work.

Q: Which track of the last 20 years do you wish you'd written?

PAUL: I like Fields of Gold. One of my favorite Sting songs.

Q: With George Harrison gone, you must be glad that you did Free As A Bird and Real Love for the three-volume Beatles Anthology in 1995 and 1996.

PAUL: Yeah, that was nice to do. There was one more that we didn't do, which was a pity. It didn't have a very good title, it needed a bit of reworking, but it had a beautiful verse and it had John singing it. But George didn't wanna do it. The best thing about it all was to work with John again. Hearing him in the headphones, it was like he was in the next room -- "F*k, I'm singing harmony with John." It's like an impossible dream.

Q: What's the single biggest thing that's changed in your life in the last 20 years?

PAUL: Having children.

Q: You had them before, obviously...

PAUL: [Laughs] Yeah, I did. I've had one since. Bringing up children. There you go.

Q: If you could talk to yourself 20 years ago, what advice would you give?

PAUL: [Comedy Scouse accent] Caaaalllmmm dowwwn.

Q: Your favourite drug of the last 20 years?

PAUL: Cocoa

Q: You can't say that!

PAUL: I can. It's a double entendre.

Q: Do you miss a joint?

PAUL: Um. [Laughs] No. I've done all that. And I know what it does but... it's a bit befuddling. It's more important at my stage of the game to be unfuddled.

Q: Now that Michael Jackson is on his uppers, any chance of buying back his share of The Beatles' catalogue?[Jackson bought publishing rights to almost all Beatles songs in 1985]

PAUL: In about 10 years, a lot of it returns to me, just legally. So anyone who now buys it is only gonna end up with half of it. Some of the important rights are about to return, which I didn't realise.

Q: Would it feel good to have it back for your old age?

PAUL: Oh, yeah. You know what doesn't feel very good? Going on tour and paying to sing all my songs. Every time I sing Hey Jude, I gotta pay someone.

Q: Where will you be in 20 minutes?

PAUL: In the car, going home. Get some sounds on. If it's thick traffic, it'll be Gorillaz.

The Beatles: Famous Fans Pick Their Favorites

Brian Wilson on Paul McCartney

McCartney was somebody I admired very much, but a competitor at the same time. It was a thrill to have him around. When The Beach Boys first heard Rubber Soul, we were so flipped out that we cut Pet Sounds. Then Lennon and McCartney were so flipped out with Pet Sounds that they went right ahead and made Sgt Pepper. So it was like a friendly rivalry.

With Rubber Soul, I loved the idea of it being a collection of folk songs, a collection of songs that all seemed to belong together. That's what blew my mind the most. I loved "Girl" [singing] and "Michelle" and "Norwegian Wood". I loved them all. They were fantastic songs and there was so much harmony and melody on there. There's absolutely no way that Pet Sounds would have happened without Rubber Soul. I knew I needed to create an album everybody would like.

Paul's best quality is his singing voice. And of course, his songwriting ability runs very high. The songs are so diversified. He has such a versatile way of writing. A lot of songs are entirely different from each other. He's probably the most prolific songwriter in the history of the business. There were similarities between us in that we were both bassists and our birthdays were two days apart. He was June 18 and I was June 20 [both 1942]. I'd call us friend-mates rather than soulmates. He has such a great sense of humor. I feel sorry for him having those problems with his wife right now, but he'll get through it. A lot of people are on his side. He's such a great guy.

The first time I ever heard The Beatles was when "I Want to Hold Your Hand" came on the radio. I flipped I really loved it. But I didn't meet Paul until 1967, in a recording studio in LA. He came by with Derek Taylor. Derek had been the Beatles' agent, and because of the Beatles connection, we decided he'd be appropriate for us as well. Paul was dressed in a white suit with red, patent-leather shoes. He looked really spiffy. Then he sat down at the piano and played "She's Leaving Home" for me and my wife. We both just cried, it was beautiful.

Then of course, we recorded him eating a carrot and some celery for my song "Vegetables". We got along pretty good. We didn't really stay in touch over the years, but when we met in 2004, he had come to watch the SMILE concert in England. I was told that he was crying. And I knew he'd said that "God Only Knows" is the best song ever written. I'd never really considered writing a song with Paul, but it's something I might still pursue, though not right away. His concerts are just fantastic. I've been to three or four of them and every time I go, I like him more. When we get together, we talk about each other, what we're into and what kind of music we're making.

My favorite Paul McCartney moment? Let It Be. I could not believe how great that album sounded. It was just fantastic, with Phil Spector producing. "The Long and Winding Road" [sings the chorus] is just so beautiful."

"We Love Paul 10 of Macca's magic moments"

1. Royal Variety Performance, November 1963. Paul introduces "Till there was you" as a song from "The Music Man". "And it's also been recorded by our favorite American group Sophie Tucker."

2. New York press conference, February 1964. Reporter: "in Detroit, there's people handing out car stickers saying Stamp Out the Beatles." Paul: "Yeah, well, we're bring out a Stamp Out Detroit campaign."

3. "Aaaowwwww!" Of all the McCartney screams that precede a Harrison guitar solo in 1963-64, "Can't Buy Me Love" is the shrillest, the loudest, the best.

4. Waking up with the melody for "Yesterday" in his head. Paul plays it to friends, asking them to identify the song. He can't believe he's written it.

5. Hearing John's lyrics for "This Bird Has Flown" (later "Norwegian Wood"), Paul suggests a small but crucial change to the last verse. The house should burn down.

6. The guitar solo in "Taxman". Usually credited to George, the solo proves that Paul was not only a phenomenal bassist but an outstanding lead guitarist.

7. Paul talks EMI chairman Sir Joseph Lockwood into approving Sgt Pepper's celebrity collage sleeve, after lawyers have warned of multiple lawsuits. "Don't worry" Paul says. "Everyone'll love it."

8. A night in 1968, Paul opens an upstairs window of his St John's Wood home, perches on the windowsill and sings the newly written "Blackbird" to a group of female fans camped outside.

9. Paul walks barefoot across Abbey Road for the LP cover. The number-plate of a nearby VW Beetle reads "LMW281F", sparking rumors that he is dead (Linda McCartney Weeps).

10. Twickenham, 1969.Yoko howls an avant-garde improvisation while Paul, eager to please, stoically wrenches feedback cacophonies from his amp.
