Raul Rekow, who played percussion with the Santana Band almost continuously from 1976-2013, has died. He appeared on 16 Santana studio efforts, including 1977’s Top 10 hit Moonflower, 1981’s Zebop! (featuring the Top 20 song “Winning”), 1999’s 15-times platinum Supernatural and Carlos Santana‘s most recent solo album, 2014’s Corazon.
“We mourn the loss of my brother, Raul Rekow,” Santana said, via Facebook. “He was an integral member of Santana for 34 years and the heart beat of the band. On Nov. 3, 1980, British hard rockers Whitesnake capped a few years of frantic activity with their first official concert document, Live…In the Heart of the City, which captured the hard-working sextet in their natural element. That there was even enough consumer demand for a double live opus, just two years beyond the band’s official formation, was a testament to how far David Coverdale’s post-Deep Purple enterprise had come in such a short time.
Indeed, since morphing into a full-on band proposition (from a name casually ascribed to Coverdale’s backing band over two, rather poorly received solo LPs), Whitesnake had made their blues-rock intentions clear on 1978’s Snakebite EP and Trouble LP, showed they meant business on the following year’s Lovehunter, and then doubled down again with 1980’s even more successful Ready an’ Willing album.
And now here they were — singer and leader Coverdale, guitarists Micky Moody and Bernie Marsden, keyboardist Jon Lord, bassist Neil Murray and drummer Ian Paice – not even six months removed from that last studio LP’s release, but already presenting their burgeoning fan base with this four-sided live record consisting of two distinct sets, themselves separated by nearly two years.

With the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret in the audience, this was the night when John Lennon made his famous remark “In the cheaper seats you clap your hands. 1963, The night after The Rolling Stones had just come off a 30-date UK tour with The Everly Brothers, they kicked off another 50-date UK club tour at the Top Rank Ballroom in Preston.

1969, Founder member of The Ink Spots, Ivory Watson died aged 60. The group who formed in the early 1930s in Indianapolis, had the 1939 US hit ‘If I Didn't Care’, and ‘The Gypsy’ was their biggest chart success, staying at the No.1 position for 13 weeks.

1970, The Beach Boys played the first of four nights at the Whiskey A Go-Go club in LA.


1971, The Who opened up The Rainbow Finsbury Park, London, England appearing on the first of three nights.

1973, Roxy Music and Leo Sayer appeared at Newcastle City Hall, England.

1974, Pink Floyd played the first night on a 21 date UK tour at the Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Scotland.

1989, Elton John scored his 50th UK chart hit when 'Sacrifice', entered the charts. Only Cliff Richard and Elvis Presley had also achieved this.

1998, Oasis singer Liam Gallagher was arrested after an alleged drunken brawl with photographer Mel Bouzac at a London pub. Bouzac had been tipped off that Liam was in the pub wearing a Russian hat and attempted to take photos.


2000, Stereophonics bass guitarist Richard Jones married Gail Middleditch at a church in Suffolk.

2000, DMX went to No.1 on the US album chart with 'The Great Depression'.

2001, Michael Jackson went to No.1 on the UK album chart with 'Invincible'.

2001, The Times newspaper published the 'Rich List' with Madonna being the highest earning woman in Britain grossing £30m, all the Spice Girls had dropped out of the listings except for Victoria Beckham. Paul McCartney had earned £20.5m during the year.

2002, Elton John and his lyricist Bernie Taupin received the Music Industry Trusts Award for one of the greatest songwriting partnerships of all time.
