Я не знаю, как там в японском издании. Хотел, было, прикупить его. Но из описания следовало, что японские там только диски (SHM-CD, кстати). А всё остальное сделано, вернее - отпечатано, не в Японии. На Амазонах просили за них непомерную цену, а брать в японском магазине, в частности, в CD Japan, не стал, так как доставка надёжным способом (EMS) обошлась бы (из-за веса) почти в 4000 рублей. Но почти уверен, что японцы предусмотрели и там пакетики. Основания для уверенности имеются. Во всех японских изданиях, приобретённых мною в последнее время (The Beatles In Mono, альбомы в стерео от Magical до Let It Be (из релиза 09.09.09), Aerosmith Get A Grip, Led Zeppelin Definitive Collection of Mini-LP Replica CDs, Shaved Fish и Sometime In New York City), в общем, во всех случаях с изданиями с закосом под оригинальную упаковку оригинальных альбомов, всегда диски были в пакетиках. И что интересно, в пакетики вложены диски в европейском боксе ABBA Complete Studio Recordings. Так что могут, если хотят.

Это Вы имеете в виду все, что оформлено под "мини-винилы", это да, там везде пакетики. Но вопрос о том, как японцы поступают с "книжками" типа этой. Я не уверен, что они к ним делают пакетики.

У меня дважды не скачивался до конца "анлимитед".

Начал знакомиться с новым изданием с DVD One Hand Clapping. Полный позор. Очевидно,что никакой реставрационной работы с видеоматериалом не проводилось. Похоже, что для официального релиза взяли давно гуляющую по рукам и интернету пиратскую версию. Лишь по фрагментам разбивка другая, нежели в "пиратке". Видимо, львиная доля расходной части бюджета нового переиздания ушла на маркетинг и продвижение продукта. На ремастеринг видео денег явно не было выделено.

Для видео все-таки применимо слово реставрация, а не ремастеринг.

Band (still) on the Run

By the late summer of 1973, Paul McCartney, for all his staggering musical achievements as a member of the Beatles, still had something to prove. He had already shown that his post-Beatles music could sell in vast quantities: his first solo album, McCartney (1970), had gotten into the top two on the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic; his first proper studio effort of the seventies, Ram (1971), credited to “Paul and Linda McCartney”, had done likewise – and had yielded a huge worldwide hit single in the form of “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey”; the rough and ready (but still, in places, lyrical) Wild Life (McCartney’s first album with his new band, Wings) had been less successful, but had nevertheless sold in sufficient quantities to get into the Top Ten; and its follow-up, Red Rose Speedway, the most melodic album of his post-Beatles career, was a Number One album, driven up the charts by its accompanying Number One single “My Love”, which forms part of McCartney’s stage repertoire to this day.

Many non-album singles had also been big hits: “Another Day” in 1971 (famously savaged by John Lennon in “How Do You Sleep?” on the Imagine album); “Give Ireland Back to the Irish”, a 1972 hit in Britain which was banned from airplay on the BBC owing to its overtly political attack on the policies of the British government of the day in Ireland, leading to the Bloody Sunday massacre; a rendering of the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb”, inspired by his young daughters singing at the family table; and “C Moon/Hi Hi Hi”, the latter of which was also banned by the BBC on account of what was thought to be its sexual content. And, of course, there was the wonderful theme song for the 1973 James Bond film Live and Let Die, which is probably the best Bond theme song ever written, and is to this day also a staple of McCartney’s live shows.

What McCartney had yet to do, by mid-1973, was satisfy the music critics that he could produce an album which would be thought worthy of one of the two most important members of the Beatles, and half of the greatest songwriting team ever known in popular music. (No, I don’t mean George and Ira Gershwin, or Jagger and Richards.) McCartney’s first four albums had all been savaged by the critics to a greater or lesser extent, and had earned him a reputation as a musical lightweight when he worked without the critical eye and accompanying input of John Lennon. Certainly, McCartney at that time was not guilty of what has been termed the overbearing seriousness of either Lennon (political) or George Harrison (spiritual), but even Ringo Starr had (with a little help from quite a number of friends, including the other three Beatles) come up with a smash hit album, Ringo (1973), which was a sturdier and more accomplished effort than several of McCartney’s albums up to that time.

After taking a critical hammering for Red Rose Speedway (condemned by Robert Christgau as “(quite possibly the worst album ever made by a rock and roller of the first rank”) and especially “My Love” (dubbed “his soggiest hit” by The New Rolling Stone Album Guide – Christgau’s comment on the Wings Greatest LP (1978) was “All I could ask is a stylus-width scratch across ‘My Love’”), McCartney was in a defiant mood. Having written enough material to fill his next album, he decided to record it in an unusual location and asked his record company, EMI, for a list of all the places in the world in which EMI had studios. After whittling down the list to two – Rio de Janeiro in Brazil or Lagos in Nigeria – McCartney decided to fly to Lagos, thinking that Africa would be “a great vibe”.

This decision precipitated a series of misfortunes that, in a less determined musician, would have put an end to the entire project. Not wanting to travel to or record in Africa, two of the members of Wings, guitarist Henry McCullough and drummer Denny Seiwell, quit the group on the eve of its departure to Lagos. Wings were thus down to a core trio – the two McCartneys and guitarist Denny Laine. After his initial deflation at this, Paul adopted the attitude “we’ll show you” and “We will now make the best album”, so that when the departing members heard it, they would say, “we should have gone”. The motivation, in his own words, was to “produce an album that was worth going out there for”.

That, however, was not so easily done, as the group and their engineer Geoff Emerick (who had worked with the Beatles since Sgt Pepper) discovered when they arrived in Nigeria. Monsoon season had set in, and the recording studio was half-built. McCartney had to explain to local staff that sound booths were needed, with glass windows in them, to stop extraneous sound from getting in. There was no drum booth, and the microphone supply was a cardboard box full of old mics. Half of the amplifiers, Emerick recalls, were missing from the eight-track tape machine, and at the back of the studio, separated by a soundproof door, was a pressing plant in which 50 or 60 people were stamping out records.

The problems with the studio were rectified, however, and recording proceeded. Then disaster struck when the McCartneys and Laine were walking back to their villa one night from the studio (neglecting advice not to do so), and were mugged at knifepoint by six men who took all of their money, cameras and (most importantly) cassette tapes of demos for the album – an experience that terrified the group. If they wished to carry on, they would have to reconstruct all the songs from memory.

Other misfortunes included Paul having to be rushed off to hospital, unable to breathe at one point, owing to a bronchial spasm brought on by his smoking (he has since kicked the habit), and a visit from Fela Kuti, a Nigerian musician who was in an aggressive mood because he assumed that Wings had come to Lagos in order to steal the local music and make money from it overseas. After being played a few tracks from the album-in-progress, Kuti realized that that was not the case and befriended McCartney instead.

Out of this maelstrom of chaos and adversity, however, came the album which is today widely regarded as one of McCartney’s finest: Band on the Run. It is now the first release of what has been designated the Paul McCartney Archive Collection, which is due to include such other reissues such as the McCartney album, Ram and McCartney II (1980). (McCartney and McCartney II are both home-made albums on which Paul plays all instruments and sings all vocals, and neither is particularly good. One can only hope that his better post-Beatles work is also to be included in the programme of planned reissues.)

Band on the Run, released in December 1973, went on to become the dominant pop/rock album of 1974. Propelled by its hit singles “Jet” and the title track, it became a British and American Number One album. An ecstatic Jon Landau, Associate Editor of Rolling Stone magazine who was later to become Bruce Springsteen’s manager, labelled it “(with the possible exception of John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band) the finest record yet released by any of the four musicians who were once called the Beatles”. Twelve days prior to the appearance of Landau’s review, New Musical Express record critic and rock journalist Charles Shaar Murray wrote, in almost identical terms, that Band on the Run was “with the possible exception of Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band album, the best solo performance of anybody who used to be in the Beatles”. Both Landau and Murray may have been gilding the lily, though only a little: George Harrison’s late 1970 album All Things Must Pass is, to my mind, the best solo album ever released by a former Beatle, and Lennon’s Imagine is also a serious contender (after All Things Must Pass and Plastic Ono Band) for the position of third best post-Beatles album made by one of the Fab Four (though I prefer Ram to both Imagine and Band on the Run – but that is just an eccentric personal view).

The 2010 reissue of Band on the Run comes in three configurations. There is the single-disc 9-track British edition (excluding the 1973 hit single “Helen Wheels”, which does not really fit on the album, but which appeared on the American release of Band on the Run), and a three-disc version (featuring the British album, a bonus audio CD containing “Helen Wheels”, two singles B-sides not on the album – “Country Dreamer” and “Zoo Gang”, and six audio tracks from One Hand Clapping, a live-in-the-studio documentary film made at EMI’s Abbey Road studio in London during August 1974, and a DVD containing four videos to promote the album, a three-minute home movie showing scenes of Wings in Lagos on a day trip to a nearby island, a film of the photographic shoot for the front cover of the album, and 15 songs from One Hand Clapping, including such chestnuts and rarities as Paul performing “Baby Face” (originally from the film Thoroughly Modern Millie) and “Soily”, a raging rocker written by the McCartneys and previously available only as the closing track of the live album Wings Over America (1976)). Finally, for the particularly serious fan, there is a de luxe four-disc version, which adds the CD of audio commentary and alternative versions of songs from Band on the Run that was released in 1999 as part of the 25th Anniversary edition of the album, and which is accompanied by an expensively produced 120-page coffee-table book about the album.

Although the book accompanying the de luxe edition states that Band on the Run “appeared to universal acclaim”, this is not quite true. Most reviewers were certainly laudatory, but some remained critical. In the All Music Guide to Rock, after giving the album a five-diamond grading (the highest in the rating system used in that book), Stephen Thomas Erlewine grumbles that “most of the songs are more style than substance” and that “the songs just happen to be not very good”. Elsewhere, Robert Christgau, who can be very hard to please, howls indignantly “Pop masterpiece? This?” before giving the album a C+ grade, signifying “a not disreputable performance, most likely a failed experiment or a pleasant piece of hackwork”.

Personally, wherever Band on the Run should be placed in a ranking, in order of merit, of all the Beatles’ solo albums (definitely in the top five, I would say), I consider Band on the Run an extremely strong album both musically and lyrically, which has retained its appeal over the 37 years since its original release. It was my favourite album of 1974 (I like to treat it as a 1974 record, so as to accord top honours for 1973 to Elton John’s magnificent double album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road), and it is still worth adding to your collection today if you don’t already own it on CD, or if you wish to explore the history of this classic album via the 3-disc or 4-disc edition.

Кто покупал LP-издание - подскажите, насколько точно оно (если не считать двух пластинок) воспроизводит оригинальное? И вообще, есть ли там какие-то фото/плакаты/etc, чего нет в deluxe?
И вопрос для знатоков. Сейчас на амазоне стоит порядка 30 баксов - стоит ли подождать, пока цена понизится (если такое будет), и может потом купить с винилами других ремастеров? Я так понимаю, это же не limited-издание, не должно исчезнуть... (В отличие от того же 40th ATMP Джорджа)...

Это очень прискорбно.
Как-то и покупать расхотелось, никакого смысла в этом теперь.

Я вообще не вижу смысла в этом издании,ремастер 1999 года уже полностью самодостаточен.

Можно и не дождаться. Например, европейское издание Memory Almost Full от той же фирмы на виниле не лимитед, но сейчас его не найти. Ну, может ещё и можно но, только разве что за стольник.

Да, согласен, предыдущий ремастер хорош по звуку. Но новое издание все же придется приобретать. Аудитреки с One Hand Clapping издаются впервые. Куда же без них? Второй мощный аргумент: BOTR - первый в СЕРИИ. Уж если собирать, то всю серию. Наверняка в каждом бонусном диске будет что-то новое, интересное.
Дельцы от музыки поднаторели в искусстве сбыта товара. Мимо наших денег они не пройдут. Ту же картину мы наблюдаем в переизданиях Леннона, Роллинг Стоунз. Минимум средств тратится на улучшение звука/видео и работу с архивами, максимум - на продвижение товара.
В плане аудио-переизданий близкими к эталону считаю переиздания Deep Purple (лишь с небольшими оговорками).
