Quote from "Good Times Bad Times: The Definitive Diary of the Rolling Stones 1960-1969"(1997):
"Thursday, 29th September 1966, ABC Theatre, Stockton-on-Tees. Two shows - 6:15 & 8:30pm. Due to wrong directions, both the Stones and the Yardbirds arrived 20 minutes late for the first house. There was a near-riot when Long John Baldry announced they may not perform. Peter Jay and The Jaywalkers and Ike Tina Turner played an extra set, to cover for them. The Stones eventually arrived, but played for only 20 minutes. After the shows, Mark Roman* drove Bill's Mercedes from the theatre, as a fan decoy, while Bill left with the others in the Austin Princess. A few miles out of town, the two vehiclesmet and Bill took over the Mercedes (Bill had been driving himself between venues, since the tour resumed in Manchester)."

At the beginning of the tour I travelled on the coach along with the support acts, later I travelled with Bill Wyman.
The Stones themselves were already big stars, but not yet the Superstars they are today. You don't last over fifty years in the music business if you're not unique. I have always regarded them as the best rock band in world; they blazed the trail for others to follow. However, in 1966 they were just a bunch of very talented and intelligent people. Charlie liked big band music, Bill liked to visit stately homes and castles. In the latter part of the tour he and I travelled together in his Mercedes with a couple of the Ikettes in the back, listening to The Four Tops on his in car record player. (Yes there were such things.) Bill liked to bring his car to the concerts so it became my responsibility to drive it back to the hotel after the show. When the last note was played on stage, the guys would drop their guitars and head for the limo which would take off quickly, followed by the coach and then me in Bill's Mercedes, the idea being that we could impede and slow down any pursuing bikes and such that were trying to get to the guys.
There was one time when it was necessary to take a private plane, from where I cannot recall, back to London. In those days passengers and pilots were not completely separated in the aircraft, so we could see and talk to them easily. Brian (I say Brian because it was he who was responsible for looking after a tin of "Herbal Tea") asked the pilot if we could smoke, and within a few minutes and for the rest of the flight the cabin was filled with smoke. We had a quite unusual and interesting landing.
Brian was perhaps the more eccentric of the group. He insisted that a dentist's chair be brought along and installed in each hotel room that we visited.
It was usually either he or Keith who secretly instructed the Follow Spot operator in each theatre to concentrate his light on Mick, forcing him to work harder, whilst Charlie drummed and probably thought about being in a big band, Bill thoughtfully chewed gum, and Brian and Keith played up a storm as always but ensuring that Mick was firmly in the light and displaying more energy than a power station."

Text is taken from the published reports of the visit.
"The Rolling Stones – England’s No.1 rock ‘n’ roll group plays at the Alan B. Shepard Civic Center on July 4, 1966. Some 3,500 screaming teenagers packed the house to see the five shaggy singers perform a 15 minute “concert” showcasing their hits, ‘I Can’t Get No Satisfaction” and “Mother’s Little Helper.”
The band’s plane landed at Norfolk Airport at 6:30 p.m for a 7:30 show at the Dome. After eating dinner on board the chartered plane, the group strolled briefly on the tarmac.
A fast, police-escorted limousine ride to Virginia Beach ends with the Stones being led into the Dome in the middle of a police flying wedge that pushed its way through the crowd.
The Stones’ act followed those of the Standels, The McCoys and the Syndicate of Sound. After the McCoys finished, the curtain was drawn and a line of policemen ringed the stage. From behind the closed curtains, the sounds of the Rolling Stones warming up became more regular until they burst out in their first song as the curtain opened.
Virginian-Pilot* staff writer Frank Delano had the opportunity to conduct a light-hearted interview with the group after the show.

-What you thought of the Beatles?
- Mick Jagger: Nice lads.
- Do you consider your music serious?
- Brian Jones: I think it’s a serious threat to juvenile morals.

Describing the audience at the dome Jagger said they were “a rather quiet lot.”

*The Virginian-Pilot is the daily newspaper for Norfolk, Virginia. Commonly known as The Pilot, it is Virginia's largest daily.
