She Was A Working Girl...
by Mitchell Symons, British writer and journalist
At last, Sir Paul McCartney has given his version of his split with Heather Mills...
I was alone, I took a ride I didn't know what I would find when I saw her standing there.
"I like your face."
She said "Baby, can't you see I wanna be famous?"
I said, "something wrong?"
"You don't know how lucky you are..."
Took her out. "It's wonderful to be here: it's certainly a thrill." Had a laugh and over dinner told her I would really like to see her again.
We're on our way home when my mind is wandering. I'll pretend that I'm kissing the lips I am missing. She says that long ago she knew someone but now he's gone. She doesn't need him.
Running my hands through her hair. She doesn't have a lot to say. "If there's anything that you want...?"
"I don't care too much for money"
"Who finds the money when you pay the rent?"
"Money can't buy me, love."
People tell me that she's only foolin', I know she isn't.
I give her all my love. "No one comes near. Satisfaction guaranteed."
"Believe me when I thank you!"
And she said, "Baby, look at all the lonely people"
One sweet dream came true today. I'm going to make her mine.
Falling, yes I am falling and she keeps calling me. "I can show you a better time!"
"I love you, I love you, I love you. That's all I want to say."
I love her: I want all the world to see we've met.
"I'll buy you a diamond ring."
"You're going to carry that weight?"
She is happy just to hear me say that I will never leave her. She's leaving home after living alone. All the girls around her say she's got it coming.
"I know this love of mine will never die."
"I know I need never care."
An invitation. The rice in the church where a wedding has been...and in the middle of the celebrations, very strange. "Who is it for? What does HE care? All the lonely people? Where do they all come from? Pick up the bags and get in the limousine. Soon we'll be away from here."
She changes from day to day. I've been alone and I have missed things and kept out of sight but other girls were never quite like this. "If there's anything I can do? You can drive my car!"
"That's all I do. I have had enough"
"Please act your age."
"You never give me your money."
"Did you think that money was Heaven sent? Tell me that you want the kind of thing that money just can't buy."
Life goes on. Fussing and fighting. A kind girl seems so hard to find. "Will you still need me - when I'm sixty-four?"
"Keep YOU by my side? Don't ask me..."
"Don't make it bad. Close your eyes and I'll kiss you."
"Why don't we do it in the road?"
"I have always thought that it's a crime."
Lying on the bed. Getting nowhere. Tried to please her. Nobody came. I will remember the things we said today.
Singing in the dead of night. "Don't!"
"Your mother would know."
"Try to see it my way. Fun is the one thing that money can't buy."
"You can knit a sweater by the fireside."
"I will lose my mind."
Watching her eyes and hoping...and in her eyes you see nothing. "If I'd been out till quarter to three..." "It really doesn't matter if I'm wrong: I'm right." Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be. I break down. "You say yes, I say no; You say stop and I say go...you say goodbye and I say hello. We can work it out and get it straight, or say good night."
And she said baby, "It's understood. Working for peanuts is all very fine..."
"I will ask you once again."
"Life is very short, and there's no time..."
"You were only waiting for this moment."
"Taking the easy way out?"
"You silly girl: look what you've done. Knew it wouldn't last. It took me so long to find out, and I found out. Get back to where you once belonged. Bye bye"
She's getting ready to go. Didn't get to bed last night. Into the light of the dark black night. Now I need a place to hide away.
And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.
