Grief of the McCartneys as pregnancy ends in new heartache They'll keep trying..but fear they'll NEVER have another baby

SIR Paul McCartney and his wife Heather are struggling to cope with the loss of their second baby, The People can reveal.

Heather, 37, suffered a miscarriage just a few months into her latest pregnancy.

The couple who desperately want a brother or sister for their 20-month-old daughter Beatrice are said to be shattered by the loss.

Charity worker Heather has turned to her closest girl pals for comfort.

And Sir Paul, 62, who will open next weekend's Live8 concert in London's Hyde Park, has been taking lengthy walks alone.

Friends say the couple who married three years ago are determined to keep trying for another child but now fear it will never happen.

A source close to the couple told The People: "They had set their sights on celebrating the birth of their second child later this year.

"But the miscarriage has come as a terrible blow to them. But Heather is telling friends she will try for another child."

Heather made visits earlier this year to the Viveka Clinic near her and Paul's home in St John's Wood, north London, after learning she was expecting their second child.

It's the same ante-natal clinic she used before the birth of their daughter Beatrice.

Viveka is also connected to the Hospital Of St John and St Elizabeth where Heather gave birth to Beatrice under the expert guidance of Dr Yehudi Gordon.

A family friend of Heather's revealed: "She told several people that she was expecting another child.

"She felt relaxed at the Viveka Clinic because she'd gone through her first pregnancy there."

Heather has a history of miscarriages and suffered two failed pregnancies during a previous relationship before she met Sir Paul. Yesterday close pals told how she had gone out on the town with them since her latest miscarriage. "Heather was down at first," said one friend. "But she is a very brave person and she hasn't given up hope of falling pregnant again despite everything.

"She's been out with her girl friends quite a lot over the last few months. Paul is there to support her too. They'll both pull through from their upset."

Earlier this month Heather was seen out with two girlfriends dining at London's trendy Nobu restaurant while her husband stayed at home babysitting.

Sir Paul, who has three kids from his marriage to cancer victim Linda, was ecstatic when Beatrice was born in October 2003.

Earlier that year Heather spoke about the problem she faced getting pregnant in an interview with TV's Michael Parkinson.

With her finger and thumb only an inch apart she said: "The chances of me getting pregnant are about that much."

Brave Heather hinted at her baby heart-ache earlier this month when she spoke at the In The Pink Party for the charity Breast Cancer Haven at London's Cadogan Hall.

She admitted: "I've had six miscarriages and two ectopic pregnancies so want to spend as much time with Beatrice as possible."

Asked about having another baby Heather said: "We'll see...Beatrice was a miracle."

Heather also revealed their childcare rota, saying: "It's Paul's turn to babysit tonight. We take turns."

Heather is likely to miss much of Saturday's Live8 concert. "I'd hoped to be there," she said. "But I've got an important commitment in Birmingham. I'll be able to get back for the last four hours though."

Organiser Sir Bob Geldof yesterday revealed how Sir Paul will kick-off the show.

He said: "It will start with U2 and Paul McCartney in Sergeant Pepper costumes. "They will open with 'It was 20 years ago today' which refers to Live Aid 20 years ago."

A spokeswoman for Heather said last night: "It's not true. There were rumours earlier this year that Heather was pregnant, but they were never confirmed. There was no miscarriage. She would like another child but are both happy and contented with their lives."

McCartney supports ColdplayMcCartney supports Coldplay
He gives the band a standing ovation

28 June 05 - Paul McCartney was in the crowd last night as Coldplay took on the massive Crystal Palace stadium in London.

The Beatle even stood to cheer the band as the gig came to an end, and called out for an encore.

They played a very similar setlist to at Glastonbury, opening with Square One, Politik and Yellow, and finishing on the new track Fix You.

Chris Martin was as humble as ever saying it was their most overwhelming moment so far and mocking his own hairstyle and the band's lack of a number one single.

He started to sing the Band Aid 20 song, saying it was their only number one, but as Boy George wasn't there to do the next line they'd "have to sing a Coldplay song," before laying into the Crazy Frog which kept them off the top spot.

"They changed my life. I never knew they could touch me that much but they did."And according to one fan - his chat made the gig:

"He was really happy to be there and really nice to the crowd, unlike moody Oasis."

The highlights included a mass sing-a-long to Yellow early in the set, but the gig didn't really get going until it went dark, when they played Clocks from a purple lit stage to a crowd full of lighters and mobile phones.

The fan verdict was unanimous praise, plenty of people said it was the best gig they'd been too, and one went even further:

"They changed my life, it was an experience I will always remember. I never knew they could touch me that much but they did."

The tour continues with another gig at the Crystal Palace Athletics Stadium tonight, followed by two gigs at Glasgow's Bellahouston Park on 01 and 02 July, and at Bolton's Reebok Stadium on 04 and 05.

MILLS McCARTNEY'S NIGHTTIME TOILET TROUBLE

PAUL McCARTNEY's one-legged wife fears she'll never get used to living live limbless, especially when she needs to go to the toilet in the middle of the night.

HEATHER MILLS McCARTNEY lost her leg in a collision with a police motorcycle in 1993 and now wears a prosthetic limb, which she takes off every night before she goes to bed.

And she admits that although she's philosophical about her life, she often curses the fact she's limbless.

She says, "Obviously I think about it. I take it off every night and I have to crawl to the bathroom in the middle of the night because I can't be bothered to put it back on.

"It is something but it's a bit like doing your hair. You just pop your leg on and get on with it."

HEATHER INVESTIGATES 'SCUMMY' JOURNALISTS HEATHER INVESTIGATES 'SCUMMY' JOURNALISTS

HEATHER MILLS McCARTNEY has come to terms with the British journalists who have made her life a misery since she started dating husband SIR PAUL McCARTNEY - by investigating them.

The former model admits she has been devastated by some of the awful things journalists have written about her and her family, but she has chosen to rise above it.

She explains, "There's always the same four people - one of them's totally obsessed with Paul and just wants to write nasty things all the time.

"It used to devastate me for the first two years but then I just thought, 'You know what, who are these people?' and I investigated them and found out that they were pretty scummy... They're just scum bags that don't do anything."

HEATHER NOT IMPRESSED WITH US SOAP DEBUT

HEATHER MILLS McCARTNEY is refusing to watch her appearance on US daytime soap DAYS OF OUR LIVES - because she's convinced she's terrible.

Husband SIR PAUL McCARTNEY has seen the footage of the activist, who appears as herself on the hit show, and has been "diplomatic" about her two-show performance, which airs tomorrow (29JUN05) and on Monday (04JUL05).

But she insists she never agreed to the cameo to become a star - she just wanted to promote her Adopt-A-Minefield charity.

She says, "I'm not an actress. I just went in and did it in two hours and left."

The former model reveals Days of Our Lives producer KEN CORDAY came up with the idea of a storyline involving Mills McCartney and her charity when he first met her at a gala.

She recalls, "He said, 'I'd like to help more...' and I said, 'Well, what is it exactly that you do?' I knew he was in TV but I live in England so we don't have Days of Our Lives.

"He said, 'We have this top-rated soap show,' and we talked some ideas and came up with a storyline that this hunk would basically go off and work in a warzone, step on a landmine, come back and need some counselling.

"I didn't expect to get the email saying, 'OK, we've done it all,' because people make a lot of false promises to charities... It was a big risk for them, so I'm really proud of them for doing that."

McCARTNEY: 'THE BEATLES WERE MOUTHPIECE FOR FANS'

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY has defended THE BEATLES outspoken political views during their heyday - insisting the band were only reflecting public opinion.

The pop legends adopted a liberal and anti-war standpoint during the 1960s - but McCartney claims they were only providing a voice for their fans.

He says, "In The Beatles, we would speak out because that was our nature. We were thinking people, we had opinions, and we started to realise we weren't the only people who held these opinions.

"We always used to say, 'These are not our ideas, these are our generation's ideas.' We had the platform. We could give voice to them. And that is a very interesting phenomenon."

Paul McCartney talked to Colin and Edith on BBC Radio 1, Friday and said that his new album will not be a double album though he has enough tracks to make it a double album. He says he will "shelve" one and work on that one later and put out the other one which is complete and produced by Nigel Godrich.

There are 13 tracks and Paul said the album is called "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard."

Paul said he wasn't sure that he and Bono will wear Sgt. Pepper costumes at LIVE 8. He said he was asked to do "The Long and Winding Road" and will do that and other 'surprises.'

He sang an impromptu "Lady Madonna" on the studio's piano.

The radio show is archived on the BBC Radio 1's Web site. (LISTEN AGAIN click on "FRIDAY") http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/djs/colinandedith/features/paul_mccartney/1.shtml

Why Heather missed Live 8 Jul 4 2005

KIND-hearted Heather Mills kept a promise to bereaved Birmingham families - even though it meant missing her husband Paul McCartney kick off the momentous Live8 gig.

Heather revealed how the ex-Beatle was upset to learn she wouldn't be by his side at Hyde Park because she had a commitment in the city.

Heather met courageous members of the Donor Family Network at the Tally Ho centre, in Pershore Road, on Saturday afternoon to praise them for allowing dead relatives' organs to be used to save other lives.

It was at the same time that the world watched her husband launch Live8 in London with a rendition of Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club. The former model, who is patron of the Donor Family Network, said: "I had already promised to come to Birmingham when the date was set for Live8.

"When I told Paul I would be here, he said 'but that's when I will be performing for Live8.' "I said 'well, I promised to be there and I am not going to let them down'.

"But I told Paul I would be back in London by the end to see him perform."

The 37-year-old, who lost a leg when she was hit by a police motorbike 13 years ago, added: "Organ donation is important to me, if not I wouldn't be here.

"My mother died suddenly when I was 21 and the family had to decide about allowing her organs to be used for transplants, and we said yes.

"I think it is very important for more people to say yes and think how many lives can be saved."

Grieving parents Teresa and Tony Masefield, from Witton, who allowed their son Steven's liver and kidneys to help others, said they were honoured that Heather had kept her promise.

"She could easily have pulled out of this event and made excuses but I think it is admirable that she came here to thank us for what we have done," said Mrs Macefield.

"We are proud of what we did but a little touch like this by Heather means such a lot to us."

Heather won her race against time to hot foot it back to Hyde Park after the event to see Sir Paul perform the big finale to Live8.

Caught between the devil and the deep red sea
Martin Kelner
Monday July 4, 2005
The Guardian

How young is Paul McCartney looking these days? This may not be the most important issue to be raised by Live8, but it needs addressing. I cannot be the only person in the world to have noticed that each time a Beatle dies, more years seem magically to melt away from Paul's smooth-as-a-baby's-bottom face.

First John, then George - there will be some statute of limitations that stops me from going back to Stu in Hamburg - could the multi-millionaire vegetarian bass guitarist be signed up to some demonic pact requiring him to kill Beatles in order to renew his own life?

A ridiculous and entirely laughable suggestion, of course, but if I were Ringo, I should make sure those patio doors were double locked before I toddled up to bed at night.

Let me make it perfectly clear that I am not for one moment suggesting that Paul is drinking his former colleagues' blood - he is after all a vegetarian - in an uncanny recreation of the plot of a late night movie I saw some years ago at the Classic, Taunton, directed, I think, by Roger Corman; but you have to agree it is rather spooky that, apart from a few signs of wear and tear around the neck, Paul McCartney is looking fresher than the boys from Keane. That's not mung beans.

Still, no complaints. I am prepared to sign up to whatever is needed in the way of prosthetics, bio-technology, macrobiotic food, wacky yogic wisdom, and deals with the devil, in order to keep ageing rock stars alive long enough to save the planet. I mean, who else is going to do it?

I would make an exception in the case of Brian Wilson, who really ought to be allowed to live out his days in genteel comfort at Dunharmonizin', the lovely home for retired barber shop singers in Southern California, instead of being propped up behind a keyboard on stage in Berlin, a tribute to the embalmer's art, with the look of a man who any moment expects to hear the cry: "Nurse, he's out of his bed again."

One does not wish to be unkind to someone whose music has brought such joy, but Brian Wilson was never a dynamic stage presence in the Beach Boys' heyday, and on Saturday you felt the only good vibrations that might have done any good were those from One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

Talking of Mephistophelean deals, Joel Glazer appeared on MUTV to persuade supporters of the benign nature of his family's ownership of Manchester United. Not that he was likely to get away with any empty weasel words of reassurance under the fierce scrutiny of the hard-hitting interrogators at MUTV. Yeah, right.

Steve Bower's chat with Glazer was like one of those cringe-making Meet The Controller phone-ins you sometimes hear on the radio, where the presenter pretends to put tough questions to the boss on behalf of the listeners, and the boss pretends to be responding firmly but fairly under the pressure of some pretty hard-boiled questioning.

The only difference on MUTV was that they did not bother with the pretence, understandably since it must be squeaky bottom time for staff at United's dedicated TV channel as much as for anyone else at Old Trafford, and the last thing you want to do is antagonise the new boss.

I did not take an entirely accurate note of the interview, and in any case Glazer's plans for United, in as much as he revealed any, were reported in this paper on Saturday, but I think the programme went something like this:

Steve: Hello, and welcome to the Sweetness and Light channel. Joining us today for an exclusive interview, it's our first chance to meet with a man who has been roundly criticised by the public and the press, it's Lucifer. Lucifer - or should I, ha, ha, call you Mr Lucifer . . .

The devil incarnate, for it is he: Just call me Nick

Steve: Well, welcome to the programme, Nick, and thank you for joining us at what must be a very busy time for you. Now you have come in for some very forthright criticism, with a lot of people concerned about your plans. What worries them is that they think you may have a dastardly scheme to consume us all in deadly flames. Do you find this kind of criticism hurtful, at all?

TDI: It's not pleasant, Steve, but if I paid much attention to the tittle tattle you read in the press, I shouldn't be in this business. What I always say is, if you can't stand the heat . . . let me put that another way . . . (smiling interviewee and ever so humble host continue until it is time for exclusive coverage of United reserve team tour of Upper Volta, followed by Showtime with Phil and Gary Neville).

Oh yes, the tennis. Some good stuff, but it seemed to pale into insignificance in the face of momentous events elsewhere. I even found myself playing truant from the women's singles final to watch Snoop Dogg, the rap artiste also sometimes known as Snoop Doggy Dogg (apologies to Mr Dogg if I have missed out a Doggy somewhere, it's that old Boutros Boutros Ghali problem again.).

I have to say this type of music utterly defeats me. Sometimes you just have to admit, you are not as young as you used to be. Unless, of course, you are Paul McCartney.

Sir Paul McCartney's busking admission
July 4, 2005

Sir Paul McCartney spent a day busking in London in disguise. .

The Beatles legend, who opened Live 8 with U2, donned a fake beard and dark glasses and took his guitar to central London - and, amazingly, his true identity was never discovered.

He revealed: "It was for a film thing and it was something I'd always wanted to do So I scruffed myself up a bit, put on a false beard and shades, and went down to Leicester Square tube station It was really cool.

"A couple of people came up and said, 'Is it you?' but I just said, 'Oh, no'.
"But I got a few shillings and I thought, 'This doesn't feel right' So I gave it to charity" .

Sir Paul also claims he rarely gets noticed when he goes out and about.

He told Britain's BBC Radio One: "Nobody recognises me much, particularly when on the Tube and you're sitting there like a zombie, and people go, 'No, it can't be?'

"I know a lot of stars who won't go to the supermarket or the cinema, but I do The worst thing that can happen is someone will ask you for an autograph and if that happens I just go, 'Sorry, I'm shopping' But I'll shake their hand and say hello"

Madonna looks set to work with Sir Paul McCartney on her new album.

The Queen of Pop discussed a musical collaboration with the Beatles legend when they met backstage at Saturday's (02-05-05) Live 8 concert in London's Hyde Park.

An insider revealed to America's New York Daily News newspaper: "She was spending quality time backstage with Paul McCartney, and they had a 15-minute chat about her new CD and him possibly doing something with her for the record.

"But although Madonna enjoyed meeting McCartney at the historic show, she allegedly demanded to be kept as far away as possible from Mariah Carey backstage.

According to America's New York Post newspaper, a source overheard the singer saying: "Just let me know when she leaves her trailer, because that's when I'm outta here.

I want to be kept as far away from her as possible."

McCartney, Dion, Lavigne donate to minefield charity to raise funds
Canadian Press
Wednesday, July 06, 2005

NEW YORK (AP) - Paul McCartney, Celine Dion, Maroon 5 and other music acts have donated concert tickets and special experiences in an online auction for Music Clearing Minefields, an initiative of the United Nations Association's Adopt-A-Minefield Campaign.

"Heather and I have worked hard to raise funds and awareness for Adopt-A-Minefield," McCartney said in a statement Tuesday. "We hope that through Music Clearing Minefields, others will become as impassioned about this cause as we are."

McCartney has donated VIP tickets to his sold-out fall tour to the online auction on the Charity Folks website. Coldplay, Meat Loaf, Avril Lavigne, Elvis Costello, Brian Wilson, Jack Johnson, B.B. King and others also have donated concert tickets and "meet-greets."

Last year, Adopt-A-Minefield auctioned off items such as tickets to the Kingdom of Heaven film premiere, passes to a Valentino fashion show in Paris and drum skins signed by Aerosmith and Ringo Starr. Adopt-A-Minefield encourages individuals, community groups and businesses to resolve the global land mine crisis.

"I have always believed that music makes the world a better place, but not until recently did I fully understand the scope of this statement," McCartney said. "Music Clearing Minefields demonstrates the way music can make the world a safer place."

Heather McCartney: Soaping UpHeather McCartney: Soaping Up

One could say that Heather Mills McCartney, second wife of Paul McCartney, has lived a soap-opera-like life.

But last week and earlier this week, Heather was responsible for a storyline on the wacky NBC soap "Days of Our Lives."

No, it wasn't about evil twins, demonic possession or faked deaths.

Heather created a storyline about a soldier who goes to Iraq and comes back an amputee after stepping on a land mine. Mrs. McCartney, as you may know, is a vocal force in the campaign to destroy land mines around the world.

She herself lost her left lower leg below the knee after being hit by a police motorcycle in 1993.

I ran into her backstage at Live 8, where she was doing her own filming for a mini-documentary about the proceedings.

"I thought I'd get something together for when all this is forgotten in six months," she said.

She has a point; people's memories are short.

Of course, I don't know how director Richard Curtis feels about Heather's filming. The man behind "Four Weddings and a Funeral," and, along with Bob Geldof and U2's Bono, behind Live 8, was making his own documentary on Saturday backstage in London.

But back to the soap: Heather sat next to "Days" producer Ken Corday at a charity event and proposed the idea. Over the last few days, she made personal appearances on the show and also appeared in a public service announcement on the subject.

Heather, by the way, gets an unfairly bad rap in the press as Paul's wife and mother of Beatrice, now 20 months old. In fact, she's quite lovely in person and is serious about this issue.

The British press made a big deal of the fact that Paul and Heather didn't spend any time backstage with Paul's famous fashion-designer daughter, Stella McCartney.

But I don't think that was true either. Stella made the rounds and left early, choosing not to stick around for hours and hours. But everyone seemed to get on just fine.
