The Six Things You Need To Know About Scorsese's George Harrison Documentary

George Harrison: Living In The Material World is a new, epic film charting the life and times of "the Beatle that changed the most". The full MOJO review will appear in a future issue of the mag (sneak preview - it's great), but in the meantime here are six things you can look forward to seeing when it is released on DVD/Blu-ray this autumn.

1.There is enough unseen footage, photos, audio outtakes and new interviews to satisfy even the most devoted Beatles fans.

Five years in the making, Living In The Material World contains new contributions from a small army of George's nearest and dearest. Apart from the somewhat expected absence of Bob Dylan, there are new interviews with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, George Martin, Yoko Ono, Tom Petty, Phil Spector, Jim Keltner, Jackie Stewart and Dhani and Olivia Harrison. The latter (the film's producer) has done an incredible job of sifting through the archives to deliver never-seen-before images, home movies and, perhaps most potently, a series of letters George wrote to his mother during the Beatlemania years. Narrated by his son Dhani, each details the pandemonium that followed the group wherever they went, the frustrations that came with global adoration and the beginnings of his journey into Eastern spiritualism. Anyone familiar with the vast Beatles Anthology documentary will have seen some of the Harrison interview footage before, but Scorsese and his team have been careful not to duplicate that project's rigid album-by-album narrative. They've also managed to avoid the well-trodden clips of The Ed Sullivan Show/ Shea Stadium gigs/A Hard Day's Night/Our World broadcast etc. In short, it all feels fresh.

2. It's 3 ½ hours long.

Like Scorsese's Dylan doc, No Direction Home, Living In The Material World is split into two parts. The first 94 minutes chart George's life from his birth in Liverpool in 1943 up until the dissolution of Beatles in 1970. The second half (114 minutes) begins with the recording of All Things Must Pass and travels through the highs and lows of the '70s and '80s before settling in the confines of his family home at the gigantic Friar Park estate and ending with his death in November 2001.

3. It'll make you laugh.

Living In The Material World does a wonderful job of capturing Harrison's scathing wit. His method of removing the Hell's Angels from Apple HQ, his close involvement with Monty Python and his dismissal of Paul McCartney's jacket are just some of the laugh-out-loud moments in the film.

4. Olivia Harrison's account of the 1999 stabbing is terrifying.

On the eve of the new millennium a 36 year-old paranoid schizophrenic broke into Friar Park and attacked George with a kitchen knife, stabbing him several times. Olivia's retaliation against the assailant undoubtedly saved her husband's life. Her memories of that night are chilling and the physical and mental shockwaves are shown to have been far more serious than was first suspected.

5. There are revelations a-plenty.

McCartney's description of his friend as "red-blooded" and Olivia's admission that there had been "hiccups" in their marriage, suggest that George's love of women ¬- and their love of him - may have been almost as powerful as his dedication to spiritual salvation.

There are also candid comments from Eric Clapton on falling in love with George's first wife Patti Boyd. Clapton hints that the idea of "swapping" had actually begun much earlier in the era of "free love".

After the initial explosion of success with All Things Must Pass and The Concert For Bangladesh, the '70s proved a tough decade for Harrison. The trappings of the rock star life had taken over and he looks painfully thin in the live footage from his tour of 1974.

And then there's what he said to Tom Petty when Roy Orbison died...

6. It's a spiritual journey from start to finish.

George on John Lennon's murder: "I think it's nicer if you can consciously leave your body at death as opposed to some lunatic shooting you on the street." Harrison's infatuation with Eastern style, study and sound has remained an integral part of Beatle-lore and Living In The Material World provides the most comprehensive mapping of his quest to date. A man of extremes, Harrison was an intensely private individual who also had the capacity to maintain long-lasting friendships with those he loved. Ringo's tearful recollection of the last words George said to him is testament to the complexity and the compassion of someone who never stopped journeying inward.

George Harrison: Living In The Material World is released on DVD and Blu-ray on October 10.

Очередная документальная работа маэстро, пишет ИТАР–ТАСС, получила название "Жизнь в материальном мире" — в честь альбома Харрисона, записанного им после распада "Битлз". В ней Скорсезе, обладатель "Оскара", "Золотого глобуса" и "Золотой пальмовой ветви", с помощью языка кино рассказывает историю "тихого битла".

Телепремьра состоится на американском телеканале Эйч–би–оу 5 октября, в том же месяце она должна быть показана на британском телевидении. Продажи ДВД–версии фильма стартуют 10 октября.

Работа легендарного режиссера, повествующая о другой "легенде", одном из лучших гитаристов современности и участнике "великолепной четверки", была снята в тесном сотрудничестве с вдовой Харрисона — Оливией. Scorsese's UK premiere of George Harrison biopic to be in Liverpool

Legendary film director Martin Scorsese's bio-pic about George Harrison will have its UK premiere in Liverpool.

Picturehouse at Fact in the city centre will screen 'Living in a Material World' on Sunday 2nd October.

Interviews with former Beatles band members Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are weaved with unseen photographs and footage to tell the story of the musician, film-maker and poet who died in 2001.

American rocker Tom Petty, from The Travelling Wilburys, and blues guitarist Eric Clapton also appear in the three-hour film - as does jailed music producer Phil Spector.

Oscar-winning director Scorsese is most famous for his bruising gangster epics but is a huge Beatles fan.

He has previously made music-docs about The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and took a journey through the history of the Blues.

"Like so many millions I first came to know George through the music. The Beatles music, those beautifully lyrical guitar breaks and solos - those unforgettable songs of George's," he said.

"I will never forget the first time I heard ‘All Things Must Pass,’ the overwhelming feeling of taking in that all glorious music for the first time. It was like walking into a cathedral.

"George was making spiritually awake music, we all heard and felt it. I think that was the reason that he came to occupy a very special place in our lives.

"When I was offered the chance to make this picture I jumped at it."

Yoko Ono, the wife of John Lennon, who was shot to death by Mark Chapman in New York in 1980, also reveals how George and the band reached breaking point with her presence.

She says: "The tension was stifling us. It had to self-destruct."

The Beatles broke up in April 1970, when Paul left the band.

George embarked on a solo career that gave him a number one hit, 'My Sweet Lord', and produced almost 30 films, notably the cult 80s film Withnail and I.

His health deteriorated during the 90s despite giving up smoking and he battled throat cancer before finally succumbing to lung cancer in 2001.

His Widow, Olivia, is excited to see her late husband's life shown to the world.

She said: Olivia Harrison, "Martin Scorsese’s intuition towards George was evident the first time we met to discuss this project.

"He sensed what George was about: his music, his strong beliefs, his art, his place in the Beatles’ story and his extraordinary life afterwards.

"Marty’s wonderful film has found all of that and more."

Tickets for the screening at FACT Picturehouse Liverpool are on sale now. The film goes on general release on 4th October.

San Sebastián film festival: from ghosts to George HarrisonThe Spanish film festival brings interesting new fare from Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's chiller Intruders to Martin Scorsese's Harrison tribute Living in the Material World

There was no doubt who stole the show in the festival's opening few days, though, and that was Martin Scorsese with Living in the Material World, a fantastically indulgent triple solo-album of a movie, which was his colossal 208-minute documentary-slash-fan-tribute to George Harrison, featuring interviews with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, George Martin and many more. It was baggy and could arguably have come down to three hours, or two hours – it didn't need to be three-and-a-half hours long. But reason not the need. It was a hugely involving event, which made a serious, reasoned case for George Harrison as an authentically spiritual figure in pop music, a musician who, alone in the Beatles, and perhaps alone in 60s pop culture, genuinely cared about the life of the spirit and the nature of the transcendental. And with his 1971 concert for Bangladesh, George Harrison invented the benefit gig.

Scorsese argued that within the Beatles' tense group dynamic Harrison was inspired and energised by the Lennon/McCartney nexus but also alienated from it, and frustrated by it. As the Beatles' lead guitarist and a gifted composer, he should have been at least equal in status to John and Paul but never was, and his delicate musical sensibility did not have their worldly, sensual pop-instinct and punch. Scorsese brings the film to a climactic rendition of While My Guitar Gently Weeps half way through the film, and that song never sounded so compelling or thrilling, the voice of the musician himself: lonely, melancholy but defiant. Yet of course, when the quarrelling Beatles broke up George discovered what John and Paul discovered – that this longed-for liberation from the others' interference did not make their solo efforts soar, but flounder. The mysterious chemistry was gone. Undoubtedly, George Harrison's solo work had something of the prog vanity and conceit that punk was reacting against, but Harrison showed he had the spirit of punk in his soul by gloriously bankrolling the Monty Python film Life Of Brian with his company Handmade Films. (The film reminds us that George Martin's Parlophone record label was originally a comedy label, which produced Peter Sellers's classic LPs: Sellers is shown pictured with Harrison in one shot.)

Before Scorsese's documentary, I didn't realise that this was no rich man's indulgence. Harrison had to mortgage his house to write a $4m cheque for Life Of Brian. Intriguingly, the film allows us to compare two classic pieces of archive TV talk-show footage: Malcolm Muggeridge pompously denouncing the Pythons for hastening the demise of Christian civilisation, and John Mortimer sceptically attacking George Harrison's concept of "karma". There is an ironic karmic link, which the film does not explicitly point out, between Lennon's death and Harrison's – George had cancer, but his life was shortened by a horrendous, violent attack from a mentally disturbed intruder at his house. Undoubtedly, Scorsese has a weakness for alpha-male rock stars and maybe the film could have done with a sharper, more unimpressed look at, say, Harrison's super-group The Travelling Wilburys. But it was still very enjoyable.
