В интервью ничего про происхождение названия нет, так что тут мы можем только гадать.

Cпросите о происхождении названия группы у самого Петти на его сайте. Может ответит? А вот цена диска по-моему для Амазона довольно высокая.

Tom Petty's Mudcrutch Announce Debut Album, Club Tour

TP's pre-heartbreakers band finally records an album...

The long awaited debut album from Mudcrutch, recorded in just two weeks last August, will be released on Reprise Records on April 29th. Mudcrutch features Tom Petty along with Heartbreakers Mike Campbell & Benmont Tench and Tom Leadon & Randall Marsh.

In the early 70's, they were heroes in their hometown of Gainesville, Florida. Mudcrutch seemed poised for more. But the band never cracked the national music scene or made a full album. Now, more than 30 years later and quite unexpectedly, the Mudcrutch story continues.

In addition to the release of the album on April 29th, the band will undertake a short tour of intimate California venues starting on April 12th in Malibu and ending with a four-night run at the 500 capacity Troubadour in Los

Los Angeles (E! Online) - To follow up a Super Bowl performance that was viewed by more than 90 million people, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are going incognito.

Petty and longtime bandmates Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench are planning to hit the club circuit with the original members of Mudcrutch, the name of their group when they were still relegated to playing diners in their hometown of Gainesville, Fla.

After nearly 30 years, the five musicians—Petty, Campbell, Tench, Randall Marsh and Tom Leadon—reunited last summer on the West Coast to record an album.

"I just finished a record with Mudcrutch, my old band before the Heartbreakers," Petty wrote in a message posted on his website. "I am over the moon about it. I couldn't have hoped for it to be as good as it came out."

Mudcrutch will next crisscross California for about two weeks, starting April 12 at a benefit in Malibu for Los Angeles' Midnight Mission and winding up with a four-night engagement at the famed Troubadour in West Hollywood.

But although Petty has released 15 albums with the Heartbreakers (Campbell, Tench, Stan Lynch and Ron Blair, who quit in the 1980s to be replaced by Dan Epstein), Mudcrutch's upcoming effort will put that band's total at exactly...one.

The self-titled debut, featuring a 14-track combination of new and rerecorded tunes, is due out April 29.

In 1975, back when records were records, Mudcrutch released one single, "Depot Street," which was the A-side on an LP that also included the B-side "Wild Eyes."

Leadon, a childhood friend of Petty's who left the band in 1972 and now teaches guitar in Nashville, told the Tennessean newspaper that Mudcrutch's 2007 reunion was "just entirely unexpected."

"It was like a dream, the whole thing," he said. "Tom couldn't have been nicer. It was great to hang out with him again."

Meanwhile, Petty will return to his day job fronting the Heartbreakers on May 30 when the "Free Fallin'" rockers kick off a three-month North American tour in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Послушала 6 песен с альбома Mudcrutch. Понравилось даже больше. чем я могла ожидать. Великолепный звук. Нравятся как кантри вещи,так и то. что больше похоже на традиционное звучание Тома.
Бенмонт хорошо поет. Конечно о сольной карьере ему рано думать, но в рамках проекта - это весьма интересно.

С удовольствием послушал песни. Все хорошо, но "рочешники" понравились больше, чем песни с налетом "американы". Мой фаворит из шестерки - Lover of the Bayou.
Единственное непонятно, зачем было называться Mudcrutch, поскольку все звучит в любом случае, как программный, хрестоматийный Петти. Я думал, что будут какие-то эксперименты. Но обошлось без них. Вот и славно.

Может быть это попытка выпустить дополнительный альбом в обход контракта? Да и при этом можно избежать претензий чуть больше себе позволить: вроде как и не сольник, и вроде как и не HB. Ну и судя по всему больше демократии в группе. :)

The surprise, thrown-together reunion of Tom Petty's original teenage-years band, Mudcrutch, will unveil it's full fruits later this month with a new album - recorded hastily over 2 weeks in Petty's Malibu home studio. Thankfully ending the widely misconstrued notion that he was entering retirement, Petty fans now have "Scare Easy," a new single to tide them over that features old Heartbreaker stalwarts Mike Campbell on guitar and Benmont Tench on keys.

It's classic Petty - a simple (how could this not have been written before?), swampy rocker; with Tench's subdued haunted-house Korg providing underlying dread, but Petty's voice, as from-the-hip and defiant and ever, snidely triumphing. With dark renegade boasts and a disarming rhyme scheme, it's another page from the highlight book of Petty's catalog - both a champion and a theme of the underdog, of the "loser at the top of my game," as he invokes here.

Making this, self-reliantly bold, edgy, and maybe just a bit pissed off, the perfect 30-year-later B-Side to "I Won't Back Down;" and signifying that the coming weeks before the Mudcrutch release will be worth the wait, and in the end, basically provide listeners a new Petty album.

After all it's been Campbell and Tench that have provided the backbone of Petty's sound all these years; and with the towering absence of the latter on the otherwise brilliant "Highway Companion," it's good to see that the man is moving forward while re-embracing his roots.
