Runnin' Down A Dream To Be Released in Europe and Australia

Fans in Europe and Australia do not have to wait much longer for the opportunity to enjoy Peter Bogdanovich's Runnin' Down A Dream.

On November 23, SPV Records will release the entire 4-disc set in stores throughout Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. SPV will release the entire 4-disc set in stores throughout the rest of Europe on November 26.

On November 24, Liberator Music will release the entire 4-disc set in stores throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Petty grievances: 'No room' for a lost Heartbreaker

ST. AUGUSTINE — In Peter Bogdanovich’s documentary “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” Tom Petty goes from a hungry and ambitious Florida teen to international rock icon.

The four-hour film (just released on DVD), and the coffee-table book that accompanies it, relates the story of Petty and the many musicians who’ve played with him over the past four decades. The tale is told by the star himself along with dozens of present and former band members, business associates and famous admirers.

Danny Roberts is nowhere to be found. A singer/guitarist with Mudcrutch, the Gainesville group that evolved into the Heartbreakers, Roberts spent three years with Petty and company; they were the best of friends, and obsessed with making the big time.

Roberts performed on every recording that brought the group to the attention of the Los Angeles music industry, and even drove the 1969 Volkswagen van that got them there. They performed many of his compositions. He signed the first contracts and played hundreds of shows as part of Mudcrutch. He sings and plays bass on the only single the group ever released.

There’s a famous photo, circa 1974, of the band in this period. It appears in “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” but Roberts has been airbrushed out.

The Mudcrutch saga takes up much of the film’s first hour.

“I try not to be bitter, but I can’t but be a little hurt by such an intentional snub,” said the 55-year-old Roberts, who’s back playing in Florida bars. “I somehow thought Tom was bigger than that.”

Although Petty was the group’s chief songwriter and vocalist, Roberts was an integral part of their developing formula. “When they hired me, they tried to talk me into singing his songs,” Roberts said. “But I said ‘This guy’s got a real identity, and it would be foolish to even think about that.’”

Mudcrutch broke up in 1975, without finishing an album. Roberts moved back home to Florida, while Petty and the others remained in California to pick up the pieces.

“They asked me to come back 15 to 20 times,” Roberts said, “every day for a while. They’re hired another guy from Florida to play bass, but it didn’t work out.”

He did head west again, and spent several years playing with New Wave pioneer Phil Seymour. Petty had reformed his group and re-named them the Heartbreakers.

In a statement, Bogdanovich cited the documentary’s epic running time as the reason for Roberts’ exclusion. “We could not possibly encompass every single twist and turn, nor every person who came and went along the way,” the filmmaker said.

“I am sorry Mr. Roberts feels slighted, and can understand his feelings, but we had to keep the viewers’ attention-span in mind, and he was not essential to the journey we were depicting ... Nothing personal.”

Roberts hasn’t seen or heard from his old friends for 20 years. “I’ve gone out of my way not to badmouth Tom or anybody in that band,” he said.

He insists he doesn’t want money; he received a hefty royalty check for the Mudcrutch tracks included on the 1995 Petty anthology “Playback.”

“I want acknowledgement of my input and my contributions,” Roberts said. “I was there. It wouldn’t have happened as it happened without my participation.

“Nothing would have stopped Tom’s talent from making its way to the place that it’s at. It’s like a game of pool — Tom was the 8-ball, but I was the 1-ball. You have to spread them all out on the table to eventually sink the 8-ball into the corner pocket, and win the game.” 

В таком случае, цитата Богдановича “We could not possibly encompass every single twist and turn, nor every person who came and went along the way” не совсем корректна, так как Робертса не то, что нникто не попытался encompass (переводится как "окружать заботой и вниманием", так и "затрагивать, касаться"), его намеренно из истории группы исключили. И по-моему, это очень некрасиво.

Обвинять в предвзятости Била де Янга не могу - он когда-то писал потрясающе классные статьи о Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

Да, какя-то не очень красивая история получилсь.

Просто как предположение - этот hefty royalty check, возможно, изначально предполагался не таким уж hefty, могли быть какие-то трения между Робертсом и Петти (даже скорее всего не с ним лично, а с его менеджментом), и дабы избежать чего-то подобного в будущем, Робертса решили вообще не упоминать и "изъять из архивов".

Точно мы, вероятно, никогда не узнаем, шоу-бизнесс - еще та кухня, но как-то хочется Тома Петти оправдать. Если он Джеффа Линна когда-то в со-авторы записал только за то, что тот предложил "free" в "Free Fallin'" петь на октаву выше, то как-то не очень вяжется, что сейчас он предпочитает умалчивать о старых заслугах бывших товарищей по группе. Хотя у него с Робертсом и Линном наверняка разные отнощения.

Мне тоже кажется, что там какие-то личные проблемы во взаимоотношениях. Не хотелось бы ворошить старое в фильме, подробности рассказывать. Кто его знает, что там за конфликты были. Тем более, что бывают вещи о котрых в 2 словах не расскажешь, а подробности займут слишком много места и будут не очень в тему.

"No funny business," she assured passersby, however. "It's just friendly here." During dinner, she took her act to the stage, where she performed alongside her Weekend Update co-host Meyers. Afterward, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers played a set for an appreciative crowd that included Tom Brokaw, Brian Williams, Harvey Weinstein, and Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg.

Tom Petty to play Super Bowl halftime show Sun Dec 2, 5:14 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will play the coveted halftime slot at the Super Bowl in Arizona on February 3, organizers of the year's No. 1 television event said on Sunday.

This year, nearly 140 million Americans watched Prince play at the football extravaganza.

Other recent acts have included the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and U2. The most infamous performer was Janet Jackson, who bared her breast during the 2004 event, triggering a bipartisan political crackdown on televised smut.

The National Football League's annual championship game will be held at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, near Phoenix. It will be televised by Fox.

Petty's performance will mark a rare occasion where the veteran rocker is closely aligned with a corporate sponsor, in this case the North American arm of Japanese tire firm Bridgestone Corp, which has lent its name to the halftime event.

Petty, 57, is an outspoken opponent of sponsorship of rock concerts, and his last album with the Heartbreakers, 2002's "The Last DJ," was a pointed assault on corporate greed. His spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment.

As I walked home from school one day, I could hear loud music coming from the Petty backyard. Later that night, my mother, who was at the time a very conservative and strict Baptist, instructed my sister and I to "walk on the other side of the street", because "who knows what is going on in that backyard with that older Petty boy and his music!". My mother seemed to fear at the time that her little girls might be "corrupted" in some way by rock and roll music. She also wondered why Tom was in the backyard playing music instead of going to school and she didn't like his long hair. My grandmother didn't think it was such a big deal....she didn't see the difference between what Tom was doing and what Elvis was doing.
