C Амазона:

Robert Cray says that Buddy Guy's guitar solos sound like laughter from space, but they can also peal like the cries of lost souls attempting to cross the River Styx. If these 47 songs on three CDs plus a DVD boasting a new 75-minute documentary and six performances from the Montreux Jazz Festival prove anything, it's that Guy is one of the most dynamic, diverse, expressionistic, and emotional guitarists--in any genre. The set neatly examines the 70-year-old Chicago blues legend's half-century career, starting with a ragged but soulful "The Way You Been Treating Me" cut in 1957 at a radio station in Guy's native Louisiana that finds him developing his searing, exploratory style. A year later, he's in Chicago working with tunesmith Willie Dixon, and the rest is history (chronicled in Anthony DeCurtis's excellent lines notes) that leads from the glory days of Chess Records to Guy's early breakout recordings for Vanguard to his modern-day mastery. The most recent recordings often find him working with acolytes: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Keb' Mo', Jonny Lang, Bonnie Raitt, Keith Richards, and John Mayer (who duets with Guy on the unreleased "I'd Rather Be Blind, Crippled & Crazy"). B.B. King, who along with Guitar Slim was Guy's most important early influence, also joins Clapton and Guy on a stirring acoustic version of John Lee Hooker's "Crawlin' Kingsnake."
This set makes the argument for Guy's ever-continuing growth as a musician--not only as a player whose frenzy, improvisational instincts, and tonal control keep stretching with age, but as a stylist who was unafraid to put aside his trademark electric approach in 2003 to make the acoustic Blues Singer (represented here by "Bad Life Blues" and the Hooker tune) and to embrace primal North Mississippi juke joint music with Sweet Tea, which lends this set a pair of Junior Kimbrough covers. Guy's sole artistic weakness is his songwriting. He's never been prolific, and even in the '60s his lyrics drew on well-established clichés. But, as these performances attest, his playing's never been less than daring--and his voice knows every nuance of heartache and joy.

can't quit the blues - album reviews
Legend status came late to Buddy Guy, so it shouldn't be surprising that this is the first box set devoted to the blues giant's work. Yet it is still a bit of a shock, because Guy, it seems, has always been a part of the modern blues scene, ubiquitous even in the late '60s at the era's high-profile rock and folk festivals, playing the hippie ballrooms alongside the major rockers of the day, and being name-dropped by the likes of Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. So this three-CD/one-DVD collection arrives years after it might have, its audio discs stacked with 47 prime samplings of Guy's sizzling guitar work and passionate wailing, covering nearly 50 years' worth of music. That said, those looking for an evenly-balanced career overview may ultimately be disappointed: two of the three CDs are drawn from recordings made during Guy's comeback years of the 1990s to the present, after he signed to the Silvertone label (he hadn't recorded in nearly a decade prior to that point), leaving only the first disc devoted to Guy's influential recordings for such labels as Delmark, Vanguard, Artistic, Alligator, JSP and, most importantly, Chess Records, where--although he felt stifled by the label's insistence that he soften his lethal attack--he cut some classic sides working alongside such blues titans as Willie Dixon, Otis Spann and Junior Wells, the harmonica genius with whom Guy would share stages for many years. That first disc is crammed with classic blues moments--from the first track, 1957's "The Way You Been Treating Me," Guy is burning, and as he settles into his trademark stinging guitar style and belted-out, passionate vocalizing, leaving behind some of the more derivative aspects of his early playing and singing, it becomes quickly apparent that he was meant to become one of the genre's most influential artists. "I Can't Quit The Blues," from 1968, is a soul blaster par excellence, and by the early '70s, rock luminaries such as Clapton and Bill Wyman of the Stones are lining up to play on his records. Guy's Grammy-winning 1991 debut for Silvertone, Damn Right, I've Got The Blues, marks the onset of his rightful ascendance to blues royalty, and though excessive attention is arguably paid to this period of his career, there is no denying that some of his best music has been made during these years. In particular, tracks from the rootsy 2001 Sweet Pea are as good as anything he'd done before, and even the all-star affairs--among them "Crawlin' Kingsnake," cut in 2003 with Clapton, B.B. King, Jim Keltner and others aboard, and 2005's "The Price You Gotta Pay," featuring Keb' Mo, Keith Richards and others--find Guy still in tip-top shape. The DVD features a 90-minute documentary and rare live footage, including six full performances from the 1974 Montreux Jazz Festival. Ideally this collection (which includes six previously unreleased tracks) would have benefited from a fourth disc expanding upon the pre-Silvertone years, but it's hard to argue with something that's been so long overdue and, despite its lopsided emphasis on the recent output, delivers so much. ~ Jeff Tamarkin, All Music Guide

Buddy Guy woos with soft touch at casino's first concertBuddy Guy woos with soft touch at casino's first concert
KYLE MUNSON

October 21, 2006

Riverside, Ia. — With age comes wisdom.

Blues guitarist Buddy Guy epitomized that old adage here on Friday night. He didn’t just unleash one blaring, blistering lick after another. He played with the utmost restraint and seduced his audience at Riverside Casino & Golf Resort with whisper-soft guitar solos. (Guy played so quietly that the inordinate static in the PA became a distraction.)

He crooned in his sweet falsetto more than he wailed.

He deferred to his four-piece Damn Right band, especially monster keyboardist Marty Sammon, to serve up plenty of solos.

And so Iowa’s newest gambling destination, open since Aug. 31, tapped the 70-year-old blues legend for its inaugural concert in an event center that was filled with about 950 fans.

Guy delivered a concise 80-minute performance with no opening act or encore, but he didn’t seem to lack for energy. The set began with a continuous half hour of music that focused on subtlety until one thundering drum fill launched “Hoochie Coochie Man” into a roaring frenzy. Second guitarist Will Crosby added extra firepower.

Guy — dapper in a black pinstripe shirt and pants and with a fedora atop his bald head that once was draped in long, curly locks — was simultaneously joyous and wistful on stage. He repeatedly referred to the blues as a dying art form: Many of his influential peers are dead and gone; the music is disappearing from the radio airwaves; and he considers his most recent album, 2005’s “Bring ’Em In,” poorly marketed by his record label. (Guy’s “Can’t Quit the Blues” box set to be released on Halloween should help draw some long overdue accolades for the five-time Grammy winner who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year by B.B. King and Eric Clapton.)

Guy didn’t just perform; he worked the crowd with all the gusto of a politician. He hopped off the stage (nearly slipping) and wandered the entire perimeter of the room, even strayed outside, to serenade fans up close. Nine-year-old Joshua Casey from Cedar Rapids even received an impromptu lesson and got to strum a chord on his hero’s guitar.

From the stage Guy gave the entire audience a brief lesson on blues history by transitioning from John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom” to Cream’s “Strange Brew” to Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile.”

Friday night offered more evidence that casinos are becoming more important on Iowa’s live music landscape, and not just because they’re proliferating. Casinos also tend to have more money to throw at music acts compared to their competition. They’re becoming more diverse and sophisticated in their offerings. Harrah’s in Council Bluffs recently wrapped a summer amphitheater series that embraced everything from Tony Bennett to the Flaming Lips. Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino in Altoona next year will open an indoor venue similar to Riverside’s.

Does the gambling industry in Iowa hold as much promise as the casino building boom would seem to indicate? Is the blues on the brink of extinction as Guy would have us believe? Who knows, but at least for one night the meeting of the two worlds conjured 80 minutes of simmering magic from a legend.

Buddy Guy celebrates 50-year careerBuddy Guy celebrates 50-year career
Wed Nov 29

NEW YORK - Sitting in his record label's offices, high above the Manhattan skyline, blues legend Buddy Guy looks at a table lined with six of his signature Polka Dot Fender Stratocaster guitars, all of which are awaiting his famous autograph.

But first, the blues legend takes a moment to recall their significance — all the way back to 1957, when Guy left Louisiana to chase his guitar dreams all the way to Chicago.

"To make my mother feel good about me leaving I said, 'I'm going to show you I'm doing so good I'm going to drive back here in a polka-dot Cadillac,'" he recounts with a smile.

Although the spotty sentiment wasn't entirely serious, Guy paid tribute to his mother, who died in 1968, once he felt he achieved real success.

"I said I'm going to get a polka-dot guitar. And I know wherever she is she's smiling."

These days, Guy is smiling as well. Though he toiled for much of his career out music's spotlight — inspiring the likes of Eric Clapton and Keith Richards while being ignored by the mainstream — in his later years, he's gotten accolade after accolade.

From his best-selling record in 1991, "Damn Right, I've Got the Blues" to Grammy trophies and his belated induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame just last year, the mainstream is finally giving the 70-year-old Guy his due.

And a recently released three-disc/DVD boxed set "Can't Quit the Blues" shows why he merits such admiration. It features highlights from his impressive 50-year career as a blues guitarist, including never released tracks, along with collaborations with greats like Muddy Waters, Clapton and Richards, to newer talent like John Mayer, Jonny Lang, and Keb' Mo'.

"There's a certain abandon that Buddy has that he relies on more than other people," says Mayer of his hero-turned-friend. "It's an unchained energy. Buddy Guy is what makes the electric guitar electric."

Ever the showman, Guy's music has always come from his heart more than his head, being that to this day he can't read sheet music, and delights in both the spontaneity and sloppiness that comes with improvising (which at times meant playing the guitar with his feet and teeth).

"I didn't want to play what was written," he explains. "And it worked."

However, the journey from picking cotton on a plantation to picking strings on stages across the world as a card-carrying guitar icon was an arduous one. After famously being taken under the tutelage of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf in Chicago, Guy became a peer of those whose styles he had once echoed, but he was less successful in seeing the financial fruits of his labor.

"Everybody was getting ripped off," he says. " Elvis Presley would have probably lived longer if he knew how much Col. (Tom) Parker was ripping him off. But a lot of the people who ripped us off were dead and you can't get revenge off a dead person."

Of course, black artists were being neglected in other ways as well.

"The British guys introduced us to white America," says Guy of artists like Mick Jagger, Clapton and Jeff Beck who, when they came over as part of the British invasion, credited him as an influence at a time when he couldn't even get a record deal.

"They made us go places we'd never been before."

And though now some believe being able to play the blues means having actually lived the blues, or at least being of a certain hue, Guy dismisses such musical prerequisites as absurd.

"If you got the same amount of fingers as I got, I don't have an advantage over you just because my skin is black. The only advantage I'd have was if I had an extra finger," he says, holding up his hand, then chuckling: "We did have a guitar player named Hound Dog Taylor who did have an extra little finger but he couldn't use it."

Guy would rather dispel the awe surrounding his genre, and see it move into the mainstream, which is why he encouraged blues-rock progeny John Mayer to release a blues album, which he did as a live album in 2005.

"Every once in a while a young person needs to come along and fire up the record company and remind them that the blues is still alive," says Guy, who recognizes that MTV favors youth and beauty over experience.

"My challenge is to defend blues as it exists in my pop music," says the 29-year-old. "My fans know who Buddy is and that's important to me."

Mayer not only admires Guys musical know-how, but also the way that he's conducted his career.

"I can't think of anyone else today who would stick to their guns under such oppressive conditions. He's proof that keep your head down and play people will notice."

And despite all that Guy has gone through to finally find recognition much later in life, he never lost sight of the music.

"Better late than never," he jokes of the career-spanning box set, while taking a silver paint pen to the first of the shiny black hard-bodied guitars adorned with white polka dots.

"Because I still can't quit the blues."
