О Цеппелинах речи вообще не шло, а Дженесис и Флойд упоминались как-то. Но я думаю вряд ли. Если только Гелдоф не готовит нам большой сюрприз.

Africans Wonder Whether Live 8 Will HelpAfricans Wonder Whether Live 8 Will Help
Thu Jun 9

NAIROBI, Kenya - They'll be grooving to Coldplay in London, rapping along with Will Smith in Philly, dancing mbalax with Youssou N'Dour in Paris. But in African cities and villages, they'll be worrying about day to day survival — and questioning whether Western extravaganzas like the Live 8 concerts, however well intentioned, can help.

"This is not going to change the price of my rice or fuel," said Maimouna Dialo, a 37-year-old fruit vendor in the Guinean capital of Conakry.

Aid worker Houghton Irungu was less skeptical, saying the Live 8 concerts planned for July 2 in five Western cities will force leaders of the world's richest countries, meeting days later, to respond to calls to double aid to Africa, cancel its crippling debts and help its people trade their way out of poverty.

More than half of Africa's 870 millions people live on less than a dollar a day. Africa needs urgent help for its 12 million children who are orphaned by HIV/ AIDS. About 30 percent of children across the continent are not in school. Debt cancellation and more aid would enable governments to use the extra funds on basic social services and on children, he said.

The concerts in London, Paris, Philadelphia, Berlin and Rome and a so-called Long Walk to Justice to follow were organized by musician Bob Geldof of Live Aid fame. Two decades after Live Aid, Geldof sat on an international commission chaired by British Prime Minister Tony Blair that proposed a series of fixes for Africa the G8 group of industrialized countries has been pressed to adopt.

For the walk, Geldof has urged hundreds of thousands of people to travel to Scotland, venue of the G8 summit, after the shows to press world leaders to endorse the Commission for Africa programs. The Commission for Africa has proposed erasing debt and trade barriers, doubling the West's aid to Africa, and encouraging African government's to be more democratic.

"People can relate more easily to the messages" spread by music, said N'Dour, the Senegalese world music superstar who popularized the hard-drumming, infectious mbalax style and who will perform at the Paris Live 8. "The message therefore spreads quickly."

Other performers include Madonna, 50 Cent, Paul McCartney, U2, Bon Jovi, Brian Wilson, Crosby Stills & Nash, Sting, Stevie Wonder and Jay-Z.

U2 singer Bono brought the campaign for Africa to the European Commission Thursday, where he joined commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in an appeal to EU leaders to throw their political weight behind a plan endorsed by European development ministers to double the EU's $57 billion annual development aid for African and other poor nations by 2015.

"Africa and the problems of that continent can offer us a chance for Europe to re-describe ourselves, our value system," the Irish rock star said.

Irungu, a Kenyan who advises the British aid and development group Oxfam, said stars can influence politicians because they can marshal public opinion.

"It is estimated that between 2 billion to 3 billion people will watch the (Live 8) concerts, and with that kind of pressure it would be suicidal for the personal legacy as leaders of rich countries to ignore calls that emerge from their own political constituencies in G8 countries and from Africa," Irungu said.

"The plans for these concerts are bold and imaginative," Irungu said. "The Live 8 concerts are essentially designed to mobilize the population of the G8 countries in a way that the G8 leaders cannot ignore."

For most Africans, though, the Live 8 concerts are a preoccupation of the West. They have had minimum publicity in most of Africa, including in South Africa, whose President Thabo Mbeki will attend the G8 summit. A corruption scandal implicating his deputy, Jacob Zuma, is dominating newspapers, radio and television.

Innocent Batala, a Cape Town car park attendant, said he hadn't heard about the Live 8 initiative.

"But I suppose if they are trying to help us Africans, that's good, because life is tough and it isn't getting any better," Batala said.

Bono joined European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso in an appeal Thursday to government leaders to double development aid to Africa and other poor regions over the next 10 years. The campaigning Irish rock star said that a commitment to cut poverty in Africa could rekindle public support for the European Union in the wake of the rejection of the EU's constitution plans by French and Dutch voters.

Albarn criticises Live 8 concerts Albarn criticises Live 8 concerts

Blur and Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn has dismissed Live 8, saying too few black artists are taking part and it may not be the best way to help Africa.

Performers should also be charged for taking part because they will receive so much free publicity, he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

But a Live 8 spokesman hit back, saying Albarn should "check his facts".

Live 8 said they wanted to get the most popular stars for the shows, which would feature a large "urban element".

However Albarn said it was the "greatest oversight" not to include many black and world music artists on the bill for the London gig.

"This country is incredibly diverse," he said. "More than ever, black culture is an integral part of society. So why is the bill so damn Anglo-Saxon?

"If you are holding a party on behalf of people, then surely you don't shut the door on them.

"It's insensitive and it also perpetuates this idea that Africa is separated in some way."

But the Live 8 spokesman said organisers did not simply want to "preach to the converted" by appealing only to world music fans.

"Bob Geldof's intention was to get headline-grabbing shows full of people who fill stadiums and arenas," he said.

"This is not [world music festival] Womad. We are not doing an arts festival."

Ms Dynamite, US rapper Snoop Dogg and Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour are the only black artists currently due to perform in London on 2 July.

The US concert in Philadelphia will feature a string of African American stars including Stevie Wonder, 50 Cent and Jay-Z.

A large African event is also being planned, the spokesman added, although it is not confirmed.

Albarn also said there should be "some kind of tariff" on record companies.

"All the artists that play there will enjoy increased record sales - if they play a good gig, they will benefit from it," the singer said.

Artists should put pressure on their record labels to "genuinely show this is an altruistic act and that there is no self-gain in it".

"Because surely that negates... the message if there is," he said.

'More sophisticated'

Albarn, who released an album with musicians from Mali in 2002, said he had not been asked to play at Live 8.

"I don't want to take part in an event that is so exclusive. Is this the most effective way to help Africa?" he said.

Live 8 treated Africa like it was "a failing, ill, sick, tired place", he said.

"My personal experience of Africa is that yes, I have witnessed all those things there.

"But it's incredibly sophisticated - the society and the structure of people's lives is as sophisticated, if not more sophisticated in some ways, than in the West."

Bob Geldof Fights Back Against Albarn Live 8 Slur
6/11/2005

Following Albarn’s sniping about Live 8 yesterday on Radio 4, Bob Geldof has today defended the event.

Albarn, who has refused to play at the event, derided it as too “exclusive,” and too “damn anglo-saxon” along with suggesting that it is not the best way to help Africa and even hinting at the questionable motivation behind the artists involved.

“Live 8 …doesn’t make you feel closer to Africa, it treats it like it’s a failing, ill, sick, tired place”

“It is without question that all the artists that play there will enjoy increased record sales.”

However, as reported by Reuters, Geldof or ‘Sir Bob,’ as he was dubbed after the original Live Aid, has come back by pointing out that the artists sought for the event are actually the best known in G8 countries. They are thus the most effective means of raising the event’s profile and tightening the pressure on world leaders.

This is in addition to fellow organiser Midge Ure’s assertions earlier this week that Live 8 has gone to lengths to put African artists and issues at the centre of proceedings, particularly in Edinburgh, saying:

“there was always going to be an African influence on what was going on” and that “the reality is that these are the artists who sell the most tickets…if you want to do something worthy that will get a paragraph in the press – if you’re lucky – then fine but if you want this to be high profile then these are the people you need.”

It seems that Albarn may be standing alone with a large portion of egg on his face.

BONO AND WILLIAMS TO HEADLINE LIVE 8 FOLLOW-UP

BONO and ROBBIE WILLIAMS are set to headline this year's (05) second most eagerly anticipated music event - a follow-up to next month's (02JUL05) LIVE 8 concerts.

The U2 frontman and Williams will join ANNIE LENNOX, SUGABABES and TEXAS for the follow-up show at Edinburgh's Murrayfield stadium in Scotland on 6 July 2005, four days after Live 8 is staged simultaneously in London, Paris, Berlin, Rome and Philadelphia.

The Scottish Live 8 is being held on the same day as the G8 Summit meeting to persuade leaders of the eight largest industrial nations to cancel Third World debt, double the aid budget and rewrite global trade laws so developing countries can protect their economies.

Live Aid co-organiser MIDGE URE says, "Edinburgh is going to be the focal point of everything.

"The eyes of the world will be upon it. In Scotland that day we will hold eight men to account.

"We care about the 30,000 children who die on their watch every day."

The Who Added To Live 8 London, Which Sets New World Record
June 14, 2005

Another day, another slew of news about Live 8, as the mammoth concert event is little more than two weeks away. Rolling Stone reports that the surviving members of The Who have been added to the already packed London concert, alongside Paul McCartney, U2, Elton John, Madonna, Mariah Carey, R.E.M., Coldplay and now the reunited Pink Floyd. The Who have not performed live in over a year, and have been occasionally working towards a new studio album.

Though all the Live 8 shows are free events, those planning on attending the London concert had to enter a ticket lottery via text messaging. According to Reuters, the Guinness Book Of World Records now says that this contest has set the official world record for the "Largest Text Message Lottery," with 2,060,285 messages received by the Live 8 organizers.

Some of the lottery winners were unsurprisingly already selling their free tickets on eBay, and fetching big bucks. Live 8 founder Bob Geldof spoke out, condemning the selling of tickets for the charity event. In a statement, Geldof said, "I am sick with this. The people who are selling it are wretches. But far worse is the corporate culture which capitalizes on people's misery. I am appealing to their sense of decency to stop this disgusting greed." This afternoon, eBay Managing Director Doug McCallum told the press that all current Live 8 ticket auctions would be taken down. According to the BBC, McCallum said the "unprecedented" decision was made because "our customers said they were concerned about the profiteering rap being connected with the name of the site they're so passionate about."

Last but not least, while many artists have been rumored to be added to Live 8, the latest name is one that is on every newspaper headline in the world. Live 8 promoter Harvey Goldsmith was asked on U.K. radio station Capital FM if the organizers would consider inviting Michael Jackson to join Live 8, now that his court case has ended. According to Sky News, Goldsmith's response was, "Obviously, we'd consider it," and added that there would be issues concerning Jackson's ability to work and the appropriateness of adding him to the line up. The latest acts rumored to be joining the Philadelphia concert are Linkin Park, Eddie Vedder and Wyclef Jean.

Live 8 Organizers Plan New Concert 1 hour, 26 minutes ago

LONDON - Three more Live 8 concerts to raise awareness of poverty in Africa were expected to be added to the lineup as organizers announced plans for a separate concert featuring African artists.

Bob Geldof said in a speech Thursday at an event in Dublin, Ireland, that concerts would be held in Tokyo, Toronto and Johannesburg, South Africa.

He said the gigs in Tokyo and Toronto were chosen in part to pressure the Japanese and Canadian governments to give aid to Africa.

"Three weeks ago Europe agreed, unbelievably, to double aid, throwing the ball back to the Yanks, the Japanese and the Canadians," he said. "So that forced me now to do, which I didn't want to do, a concert in Tokyo, Toronto, which we are announcing tomorrow."

Organizers said they would officially announce the new locations Friday.

An Africa Calling concert featuring African artists will be held in Cornwall, southwest England, on July 2 — the same day as the larger concerts will be held.

The Africa Calling concert will be hosted by Senegalese musician Youssou N'Dour and will feature performances by Maryam Mursal, Salif Keita and Thomas Mapfumo.

Live 8 organizers have been criticized by some people in the British music industry for a lack of African artists at the main London event, for which more than 130,000 tickets will be released.

Singer Peter Gabriel, who is helping organize Africa Calling, said the concert would give African musicians an opportunity to be heard.

"We have a chance to redress the balance. Africa Calling will be about voices of Africa undiluted," he said.

Three more Live 8 gigs revealed Three more Live 8 gigs revealed

Bob Geldof is set to announce three more Live 8 concerts, including one to be held in Africa.

Live 8 Africa will take place in Johannesburg, while concerts will also be staged in Tokyo and Toronto.

The venues will add to a growing list of shows that includes London, Philadelphia, Paris, Rome, Berlin and Cornwall on 2 July.

They aim to highlight world poverty and will take place days before the G8 summit of world leaders at Gleneagles.

Poor nations

Geldof said he hoped former South African president Nelson Mandela - who has also campaigned for the alleviation of poverty in Africa - would head the Live 8 Africa concert.

"Mandela, if he's well enough, will bring it to the world," he said.

Geldof, who originally co-ordinated five main concerts in Europe and the US, said he decided to arrange more after the European Union agreed to double its development aid to poorer nations.

He said: "Three weeks ago Europe agreed, unbelievably, to double aid, throwing the ball back to the Yanks, the Japanese and the Canadians.

"So that forced me now to do, which I didn't want to do, a concert in Tokyo, Toronto, which we are announcing tomorrow [Friday] .

Line-up expands

"We will also announce Johannesburg tomorrow."

Geldof also said that people without tickets will be allowed into Hyde Park on the day of the show, reportedly to watch the concert with extra screens and speakers.

"I'm not supposed to talk about this but other people tell me there are arrangements to allow hundreds of thousands more into the park on the day," he said.

He added that there would not be another gig like Live 8 in anyone's lifetime.

"You have the originals, their children, their grandchildren, their great grandchildren. They will never be on a stage together again.

Opera star

Meanwhile, rockers Status Quo have said they are "desperate" to join the bill at the London gig in Hyde Park.

Status Quo famously opened the original Live Aid concert in 1985 with their hit Rockin' All Over The World.

Roxy Music have joined the bill for the Live 8 concert in Berlin.

They will join Green Day, Tracy Chapman, Brian Wilson, Chris de Burgh and Welsh opera star Katherine Jenkins at the concert at the Brandenburg Gate.

MÖTLEY CRÜE And STATUS QUO Rejected By LIVE 8 Organizers - June 17, 2005

MÖTLEY CRÜE and STATUS QUO are among the 65 bands that were reportedly rejected by the the Live 8 organizers after the artists offered to play the flagship concert in London next month, according to The Scotsman. "We simply don't have room for them," Harvey Goldsmith, the promoter, said.

STATUS QUO famously opened the original Live Aid concert in 1985 with their hit "Rockin' All Over The World". Yesterday their lead singer, Francis Rossi, said they were "desperate" to play at Hyde Park. "We're going to be there if they want us to," he said. "We want to make it clear we are desperate for this gig."

A total of five enormous, free concerts will be held July 2 in Philadelphia, London, Paris, Berlin and Rome, according to the Washington Post.

The extravaganza, which is being organized by Bob Geldof, who 20 years ago put together the famine-relief concerts of Live Aid, will not be intended to raise funds. Rather, it is aimed at spotlighting the problem of poverty in developing African countries just days before President Bush, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Russian President Vladimir Putin and leaders of five other industrial nations gather for the G8 Summit in Scotland.

Live 8 Concert to Be Held at Versailles By The Associated Press

PARIS - Versailles Palace will be the backdrop for the Live 8 concert in Paris, one of eight concerts scheduled July 2 worldwide to raise awareness of poverty in Africa.

"We need an iconic building to represent the wealth of our countries," organizer Bob Geldof told reporters Friday.

"There is a great, rich symbolism," Geldof said, referring to the ornate 17th-century palace west of Paris. "In a global event like this, you must talk symbols."

"Also, I wanted a nice place to stay for the night," he said, laughing.

The goal of the free concerts, also to be held in Berlin, London, Philadelphia, Rome, Tokyo, Toronto and Johannesburg, South Africa, is to push for a political solution for African poverty ahead of a summit of Group of Eight industrialized countries next month.

Geldof rejected complaints from some critics who insist the concerts don't include enough African artists, saying the idea was to "get eyeballs" of millions of people onto TV screens around the world.

"We need the biggest artists as defined by popularity and sales," he said.

Destiny's Child and Linkin Park have been added to the lineup for the Philadelphia concert. The additions were announced Thursday, one day after organizers said rapper 50 Cent wouldn't be able to perform because of a scheduling conflict involving his new movie.

Noel Gallagher Mouths Off About Live8
6/18/2005

Noel Gallagher has today defended Oasis’ decision not to play Live8.

The band were already booked to play a homecoming gig in Manchester by the time the Live8 plans were revealed - and chose not to cancel the concert in order to take part.

Whereas Gallagher has commented that: “If it was possible, it would be nice to take part.” He has also displayed his annoyance at the way that rock stars are automatically expected to get involved and fall at Geldof’s feet:

"It's the general thing that rock stars should be doing something to fucking sort this out. And it's like, 'Well, all right, that's what U2's Bono and Coldplay's Chris Martin are for.'

"I don't like the way that somebody suddenly decides that all the bands in England are going to fuckin' play and everybody jumps to attention” moans Noel on BreakingNews.ie.
