Post '60s Stones Hits 'Jump Back' Post '60s Stones Hits 'Jump Back'

Virgin/EMI Catalog Marketing will on Aug. 24 offer the first North American release of the Rolling Stones collection "Jump Back." The set was released internationally in November 1993 by Virgin after the Stones signed with the label. It has been digitally remastered and enriched with track-by-track liner notes from Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.

"Jump Back" is billed as the only Stones collection to feature all of the group's post-'60s hits in one place. All but two of the 18 tracks reached the Billboard Hot 100 (1971's "Bitch" and 1978's "Respectable" being the exceptions). The album hosts three of the Stones' eight Hot 100 chart-toppers: 1971's "Brown Sugar," 1973's "Angie" and 1978's "Miss You."

Other top-shelf hits featured are "Start Me Up" (No. 2, 1981), "Emotional Rescue" (No. 3, 1980), "Harlem Shuffle" (No. 5, 1986), "Mixed Emotions" (No. 5, 1989), "Tumbling Dice" (No. 7, 1972), "Beast of Burden" (No. 8, 1978), "Undercover of the Night" (No. 9, 1983) and "Fool To Cry" (No. 10, 1976).

The album is rounded out by "Waiting on a Friend" (No. 13, 1981), "It's Only Rock'n'Roll (But I Like It)" (No. 16, 1974), "Rock and a Hard Place" (No. 23, 1989), "Wild Horses" (No. 28, 1971) and "Hot Stuff" (No. 49, 1976).

ROLLING STONES SINGLES BOX, VOL. 2 SET FOR RELEASE NEXT MONTH ROLLING STONES SINGLES BOX, VOL. 2 SET FOR RELEASE NEXT MONTH

ABKCO Records has set July 27th as the date of release for the second in its series of three limited edition boxed sets that chronicle the rise of the Rolling Stones as single chart hit makers in 960s. The new set, The Rolling Stones Singles 1965-1967, takes up at the epochal moment where The Rolling Stones Singles 1963-1965, released earlier this year, left off: the creation of “Satisfaction.“ The master of that song was recorded in Los Angeles on May 12, 1965 and remains, to this day, the signature piece of “the world’s greatest rock ‘n roll band.”

The new set will be in stores July 27th and features a total of eleven individual CDs that show the Stones exploring acoustic, psychedelic as well as the R&B based music that is their foundation. The third volume in the series The Rolling Stones Singles 1968-1971, will be released in the fall of this year.

The Rolling Stones Singles 1965-1967 includes the original classic U.S. and U.K. couplings of such hits as “Get Off Of My Cloud,” “As Tears Go By,” “Paint It Black, “ “Let’s Spend The Night Together,” “Ruby Tuesday” and many more. During those two years, the band released singles that underscored their sense of experimentation and open mindedness. Lyrically, the band made great strides during that time and surprised their fans with songs that offered forays into social commentary (“Mother’s Little Helper”), humor (“The Under Assistant West Coast Promo Man”) and even English history (“Lady Jane”). All of the songs in the new collection were written by band members, a great leap from their earlier years when cover songs were the group’s mainstay.

The discs in the series replicate the band’s groundbreaking singles with a total of 25 different tracks, offered in the new package. One of the highlights is “We Love You,“ the track recorded as a tribute to loyal fans who stood by the Stones in the wake of the notorious police raid on Keith Richards' home in Redland, Sussex in the summer of 1967. The song kicks off with the slamming of a jail cell door and, reportedly, includes vocal contributions from John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Allen Ginsberg.

Each of the eleven discs is individually packaged in a picture sleeve utilizing original artwork one of which is the infamous “drag” shot of the band that adorned the sleeve of “Have You Seen Your Mother…” while the actual discs approximate the black vinyl look of the Stones’ original 45s. A 28 page booklet that is packed with rare photos and extensive annotation is part of the collection as is an exclusive original essay by Rolling Stones authority Nigel Williamson. It provides a highly detailed historical narrative that puts the classic material of The Rolling Stones Singles 1965-1967 in perspective, offering facts and insight into the recording efforts of the group during its golden era.

Richards Leads Parsons Tributes Richards Leads Parsons Tributes

For Keith Richards, it was "another goodbye to another good friend" as the Rolling Stones guitarist headlined a pair of Los Angeles-area tribute concerts over the weekend to Gram Parsons, the late country rock pioneer who was too much of a hellraiser even for the Stones.

Norah Jones, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Dwight Yoakam and John Doe were also among the performers at "Return to Sin City: A Tribute to Gram Parsons," which took place on Friday at the Santa Barbara Bowl and yesterday (July 10) the Universal Amphitheater near Hollywood.

The events were organized by Parsons' daughter, Polly, who said she hoped to raise between $50,000 and $70,000 for the Musicians' Assistance Program (MAP), which helps people in the music industry get treatment for drug and alcohol problems.

Her father, who died of a tequila and morphine overdose in 1973, aged 26, was a trust-fund kid from Florida with a love of country music. When he came to Los Angeles to be a rock star in the late 1960s, he brought his southern stylings to the Byrds for one album before co-founding the Flying Burrito Brothers. He also recorded two solo albums, but never enjoyed much commercial success.

Perhaps most importantly, he became a trusted member of the Rolling Stones' inner circle, renowned for being able to supply the band with copious amounts of drugs. He particularly bonded with Richards, who told reporters backstage on last night that Parsons taught him the "finer points of country music ... the difference between Bakersfield and Nashville, for example. Because I didn't know there was one."

The extent of Parsons' uncredited influence on such Stones songs as "Wild Horses," "Country Honk" and "Torn and Frayed" has been a matter of debate for years.

"When you're playing with somebody for a few years and you do a lot, things rub off that you're not really aware of immediately," Richards said. "It's not sort of a matter of, like, 'I nicked that lick' ... It's like osmosis, and we osmosed a lot!"

The Flying Burrito Brothers managed to cover "Wild Horses" before the Rolling Stones released it in 1971, and Richards led a group rendition of the ballad near the conclusion of last night's concert. He began his set with two tunes from Parsons' solo career, singing a duet with jazz diva Norah Jones on the Nashville standard "Love Hurts" and then performing "Hickory Wind" by himself.

Jones, who announced that the shows were "the best two nights I've had in forever, since I was five years old," had the most time on stage, also focusing on Parsons' solo work. She performed "Streets of Baltimore," provided a showcase for former Parsons guitarist James Burton on "Cry One More Time," and took to the piano for "She." Besides Burton, the house band also included another Parsons alumnus, Al Perkins, on pedal steel.

Steve Earle introduced some political commentary by declaring that the Flying Burrito Brothers' draft notice song "My Uncle" would have sounded outdated a few years ago, but was particularly relevant these days. He was also the only performer to acknowledge Parsons' many co-writers, in this case, Chris Hillman, who played with Parsons in both the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers.

For his part, former X punk rocker John Doe hailed the Musicians' Assistance Program as "a really great thing for all of us who get high."

Stones star back in rehab

ROLLING Stones star Ronnie Wood is back in a rehab clinic after falling off the wagon.

He checked into the Priory in London in a bid to conquer his booze addiction.

The final straw came when the guitarist crawled under a restaurant table and pretended to BITE people’s ankles.

It is the third time Ronnie, 57, has sought treatment for the condition in four years.

A source close to the star said: “The problem for him is always when the Stones come off tour — he finds it hard to occupy his time. He realised it had got hold of him again when he was at a restaurant with his wife Jo and Kate Moss.

“He had clearly been drinking and caused a scene by crawling under the table, pretending to bite people’s ankles.

“But his frame of mind is very positive. Ronnie is getting a lot out of his treatment.” He previously drank eight pints of Guinness, two bottles of vodka and a bottle of Sambuca a day.

He first checked into the Priory in 2000. In 2002 he was in the Cottonwood Clinic, Arizona.

The dad of four has been told to quit smoking after a scan found traces of lung disease.

Last night a spokesman for the rocker said: “Ronnie is having ongoing treatment”.

Wyman glad to be away from 'boring' StonesWyman glad to be away from 'boring' Stones
28/07/2004

Former Rolling Stone Bill Wyman has slammed his former bandmates Mick Jagger and Keith Richards as "boring" accusing them of having "run out of ideas".

The 67-year-old bassist, who left the band in the early 90s, is glad he quit the legendary rockers as he was fed-up with his creativity being sidelined, while Jagger and Richards monopolised the song-writing.

Wyman says: "The best thing is that I'm no longer confined to writing heavy rock songs like Mick and Keith, who seem to have run out of ideas. They haven't had a hit for 30 years.

"There was never any access to writing. Mick and Keith didn't really want anybody else involved.

"I loved what we were doing, but my creative side wasn't being given a chance and sticking to the same safe format became boring for me."
