Morphine и Mark Sandman

Dana Colley и Vapors of Morphine вчера

Dana Colley

To celebrate Mark Sandman’s 74th birthday, we’re thrilled to announce Cocoon, Morphine’s first new album in 26 years via Partisan Records, releasing on December 4th.

Is it a lost album? A rediscovered work of art? The answer is both yes and no. Cocoon draws from recordings made then abandoned by the band during the period leading up to The Night. Originally recorded with Paul Q. Kolderie and Sean Slade at Mark’s loft in 1998, decades later, Sabine Hrechdakian (Mark Sandman’s life partner who has been managing the Morphine estate with Deb Klein) worked with Kolderie to transfer the original tapes and select the songs and mixes that would become Cocoon.

While Morphine superfans may recognize different versions of some of these songs, Cocoon brings these newly mixed recordings together from their original multitrack tapes with new saxophone overdubs by Dana as a unified album for the first time.

2 Fragile

Sandbox:The Music of Mark Sandman.

Cocoon lyrics with Mark’s hand-drawn doodles and notes. He loved performing and traveling the world with Morphine, but he also loved to cocoon when he came home. The loft was both Mark's home and studio where music was always happening, tape running, friends dropping by at all hours, lots of cooking. The lyrics speak to the joys of coming home to loved ones after months on tour.

New Single Released Today!

We're excited to share the next single off Cocoon with you, "Spaceman Charm", a previously unreleased song recorded at HI-N-DRY in 1998. Never heard in any form until now, you're the first to get this rare glimpse of where Morphine might have gone next.

Enigmatic, spare, and seductive, "Spaceman Charm” pairs drummer Jay Hilt's hypnotic beat with Mark's surreal lyricism, echoing the theme of space travel that runs through the album. “That spaceman charm / cross-legged and abstract / I like it like that,” he sings, as the song moves through a strange geography of golden light, quicksand and footprints in the air.

What makes the song unmistakably Morphine is the addition of Dana Colley's masterful saxophone parts recorded nearly three decades later. Listen closely and you'll hear multiple saxophones and even bass clarinet combining to transport us to another world.

The lyric visualizer for the single, featuring one of Mark’s most enigmatic watercolors, brings our Spaceman to life. You’ll have a chance to see this original artwork, alongside a selection of other paintings, photographs, lyrics and musings from the Mark Sandman archives at an exhibition celebrating Cocoon's release on view from December 4-6 at Fridman Gallery in New York City.

Spaceman Charm
