Sure, Cale varies the recipe slightly now and then with punchy horns, jazzy vibes, the odd banjo and even a mambo groove.

Essentially, though, To Tulsa and Back finds J.J. following the same path he blazed decades ago -- and proving once again that nothing succeeds like not giving a damn.

Tulsa Declares J.J. Cale Day

press release reports: On the heels of his acclaimed new album To Tulsa And Back, J.J. Cale has just wrapped a rare tour of the United States (only his second tour since 1996) that played to sold out crowds across the country. In the course of the tour, Cale was accompanied by Eric Clapton, commemorated by his hometown of Tulsa, and began filming of a forthcoming documentary, details of which will be announced shortly.

One of Cale’s inspirations for hitting the road in the first place was an invitation from Eric Clapton to participate in his Crossroads Festival in Dallas. That led to warmup dates on the West Coast which then headed east to Dallas. Clapton joined Cale for his entire set in Dallas which included such Cale originals as "Cocaine," "After Midnight" and "Travelin Light," all of which reached a wider audience via Clapton's versions of the songs. Clapton recently told Vanity Fair that J.J. Cale was the one living person he most admired.

Cale’s return to Tulsa's historic Cain's Ballroom for only his second performance in the city in the past two decades, in addition to the civic pride inspired by the title of the new CD, prompted Mayor Bill LaFortune to proclaim July 5 as “J.J. Cale Day” in Tulsa.

JJ Cale Is Really JW Cale

JJ Cale is not JJ Cale and in fact never was. He has always been JW Cale.

JJ's keyboard player Rocky Frisco has contacted Undercover News to set the record straight about JJ Cale's real name and we are happy to do so.

JJ was referred to as Jean Jacques. On behalf of JJ, Rocky writes The "JJ" nickname was created by a club owner on the Sunset Strip. The "Jean Jaques" crap was created by a drunk French "journalist" who got thrown out of the venue and made a lot of crap up to pretend he had done an interview".

Over the years, myth has become fact and JJ is often referred to by the false name. "He really doesn't care much, but did give me permission to correct it" Rocky says.

JJ Cale recently released 'To Tulsa and Back'. It is his first album in 8 years. Rocky hopes that the activity from the new album will generate enough interest for a well overdue tour, and he really wants to come to Australia so he can also pursue another interest. "I have mentioned it more than once" he says. "I'm hoping for an OZ/Kiwi tour sometime during our winter/your summer that will allow me to stay on after the tour. I'm a Mini and MG restorer and fan and I have a number of offers to stay as a houseguest in both Australia and New Zealand from people who know me from the Car Lists".

Сказать, что он чем то отличается от других альбомов JJ, нельзя...Добротно сделаная работа, та же вкрадчивая негромкость вокала, "жирная" гитара плюс местами "вау",местами "добро"(вообще, гитар много разных: такая неновязчивая насыщенность ),скрипочки,"вибрафон", "хэммонд"...
в "New Lover" очень забавный гитарный рифф-"хук", звучит как ирония над "Металликой"...

Rio...Симпатична,с веселенькой медью а-ля "латино", но на "бразильщину" аля самбо или босса не тянет, скорее всего "испанский вариант" минорного блюз-квадрата.

С радостью прослушал и первое впечаление: JJ остался JJ, те кто хотели встретиться со старым, добрым другом, встретят его на диске: john lee hooker - ты прав!

JJ Cale's music is well rooted in the pre-rock 'n' roll years and following his early work with the Valentines, Cale toured the road with some Grand Ole Opry stars. A versatile performer, JJ was adaptable to that pure country and western sound. But Cale's subtle blues rhythms and hypnotic voice eventually needed a chance to surface, so JJ spent some mid-sixties time in the Sunset Blvd. clubs with Tulsa buddies Leon Russell, Carl Radle, and Marc Benno (who later became the backbone of Delaney and Bonnie's band).

Over the next few years, Cale shuffled home-bases among Tulsa, Nashville, and Los Angeles, all the while delivering classic albums like "Naturally", "Really", and "Okie", as well as hit singles like "Crazy Mama", "Lies", and "Cocaine".
The Tulsa original, JJ Cale has retained an astonishing degree of privacy and mystery about him over the years and as far as anyone knows, has never been too concerned with the traditional trappings of rock stardom.
The living-legend, JJ Cale is an enigmatic character, a performer whose life-style, interests, and music seem to be born out of another time. It tells you as much about the man as he'd probably like anybody to know. It's charmingly friendly yet, disarmingly honest. He doesn't waste words, music, or your time.
This DVD is the most intimate look at JJ Cale ever. Recorded in 1979 at the Paradise Studios in Los Angeles, this rare and unique session, with Leon Russell on Keyboards, was discovered in Leon Russell's archives in his remote range in Nashville and re-stored and re-mastered and originally released on DVD in 2001 to give fans the chance to see this unique talent at work in the studio.
