Вэн Моррисон - Продолжая свой путь

Долго сомневался, стоит ли делать тему по поводу последнего альбома Van Morrison - Down the Road. Пишут о нем разное, в частности смотрите:

но все-таки после неоднократного прослушивания и "ощупывания" этого диска, моя уверенность в том, что это настоящий перл крепнет.
Я его скачал, как обычно в интернете по песням, собрал и стал слушать и убедился, что:
во-первых, он содержит огромное количество богатейшего историографического материала (отец Моррисона, да наверное в некотором смысле и он сам был заядлым коллекционером блюза и джаза). Так вот Моррисон, который давно не молод, воспроизводит алмазную классику типа "Джорджа он май майнд" с таким приобретаемым только всем жизненным опытом чувством, что пробирает мороз по коже. Он, Моррисон, по-настоящему "знает" о чем там поется.
в-вторых, альбом чудно оформлен в близком любому коллекционеры стилю - вывеска магазина подержанных дисков где-то в глубинке (наверное,Англия), так что приятно держать альбом в руках.
в-третьих, альбом только что вышел и стоит топ-моней - выше 20 Евро, стоит дилемма, ждать, пока он "сдуется" или купить его "на волне", не думая о деньгах.
Пишу Вам в стиле "потока сознания" Джойса (еще один привет Димону), именно потому, что хочу узнать, слышал ли кто-нибудь его и что кто об этом думает.
Смысл моего выступления в том, что "Вэн Моррисон - голова" (Димон - откуда это?). Ну да я надеюсь, Димон меня простит за подтрунивание, это делается лишь для поддержания разговора при сохранении глубокого уважения к Димоновой личности.

Был на концерте Вена 7-го июня. Если интересно, могу поделиться впечатлениями.

Конечно интересно, Алексей, будьте добры расскажите на что похож этот любимчик музыкальных критиков всего мира.

Спасибо за наводку, JLKMN! Обязательно послухаю-отпишу имху...Есть весчи из сольного Вэна ( этакий "айриш Михаил Державин":) ), которые были для меня интересны. Своеобразный "белый" взгляд на соул и блюз. Незабываемо сотрудничество и с JLH... Интересный факт: его песенку "Фаст трейн", которая присутствует на "Даун зе роуд" впервые исполнил Соломон Бёрк на своём "гремминосном" "Дон'т гив ап он ми" (2002)...Так сказать "обкатка прошла удачно" :) Буду ждать "встречи с автором" :)

Хотелось бы услышать впечатления о "живой работе" сабжа, т.с. из первых уст.

Очень крепкая работа...Ностальгия по временам, "когда люди были лучше, когда деревья были большими", определённо правильная музыка, правильно спетая вживую, я думаю, без многих дублей (это слышно по шерховатости вокала). Замечательная версия "Джорджии..." в этакой приджазованной пассионарности. Очень порадовала "Хей, мистер Ди-Джей" -- 100%-ный настрой на волну Сэма Кука. Много р-н-б, соула, кантри + айриш окраса.
Очень здорово держать эту пластиночку рядом с последней, тоже ностальгической, работой белого брата по оружию Вэна, Эрика Бёрдона...
Еще раз Спасибо, JLKMN за наводку...

Morrison writes autobiography to save legacy

Veteran rocker Van Morrison is shattering his mysterious image by writing an autobiography - because he's disgusted by the lies written about him throughout his 40 year career.

The Brown Eyed Girl star fears his legacy has been damaged by false reports about his past lovers and claims he plagiarised many songs.

So he's working on a currently-untitled book to tell fans the truth about his life.

The 59-year-old says: "The main purpose is to dispel the myths, because those myths are too much to live up to.

"You get biographies which claim to be about me. They come up with stories and some of it's partial truth, some of it's completely made up. They interview people from years ago who know nothing about me now and probably didn't know much about me then.

"Then there's books that say things about my music, like they know where the songs have come from. I want to expose all that."

At 59, Van Morrison is just hitting his stride

Everybody loves a Van Morrison song -- even the leader of the supposedly free world. George W. Bush's second term peaked from a public-relations point of view in April with the announcement that "Brown Eyed Girl" -- the Belfast Cowboy's eternally soulful first solo smash, from 1967 -- is in regular rotation on the presidential iPod.
"I don't know if I heard it was his favorite song, but I heard he had it on his iPod or something like that," Morrison says before a sound check at a university gig in Coventry, England. "Yeah, it's good to hear things like that, you know. But I would have preferred if it was a new song."

For Morrison, the new songs keep coming. His recent album, Magic Time, is the latest in a new, mature phase of his career that brings to mind the late-period work of giants like John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters, in which creative pioneers made small-scale masterpieces that drew on the certainties of their sounds and styles.

"It's about working all the time," says Morrison, who has released eighteen records in the last twenty years. The last three, starting with 2002's Down the Road, have been a notable return to form. Down the Road looked back to the jazz, R&B, folk music and country that he grew up on, and out of which he fashioned a singularly mystic Celtic-soul sound more than forty years ago. The highlight of the album was a searching cover of "Georgia on My Mind," but the most interesting song was "Whatever Happened to PJ Proby?," about the Texas-born singer who had a huge hit in England in 1964 with the hip-shaker "Hold Me." "There's nothing to relate to anymore/Unless you want to be mediocre," sang Morrison, who has long made clear that he feels like an exile in the modern world. "Whatever happened to all those dreams a while ago/...And whatever happened to me?"

A year later, as if in answer to that question, came an even stronger album, What's Wrong With This Picture?, on the jazz label Blue Note. The music was full of horns, strings and organ, and Morrison's vocals unfurled with the warm bite of an alto-sax solo. The easy swing of "Evening in June" was a blast of sunshine; "Meaning of Loneliness" was classic Morrison brooding on the void ("Well, there's Sartre and Camus, Nietzsche and Hesse/If you dig deep enough/You gonna end up in distress"); and a cover of Lightnin' Hopkins' "Stop Drinking," jumped with a tight rockabilly beat. Overlooked at the time, it is consistently rewarding and frequently stunning.

The new Magic Time falls somewhere between the deep groove of Down the Road and the jazzy complexity of What's Wrong With This Picture? It runs from delicate soul ballads like "Celtic New Year" to a scat-filled cover of the standard "I'm Confessin'," made famous by Louis Armstrong. Throughout, Morrison presents music as he's always heard it: rooted in R&B, but without limits of any sort. It's a sound that began for him in childhood, during the Fifties in Belfast. His father, George, a shipyard worker, was an avid fan of American music. "That was my initiation," he says. "It was a combination of my father's record collection and my friends who were into music. When I was growing up, you didn't have all these categories. Jazz was a very broad term -- it covered all sorts of blues and folk and gospel. That's my kind of jazz. In those days, Woody Guthrie was sold in a jazz shop. Jazz included everything from New Orleans jazz to British traditional jazz to Leadbelly to Ray Charles."

Morrison and Charles duet on Morrison's "Crazy Love" (from 1970's Moondance) on Charles' final album, the Top Ten hit Genius Loves Company. Morrison also wrote a song for soul legend Solomon Burke's latest album, Make Do With What You Got. "If it weren't for guys like Ray and Solomon, I wouldn't be where I am today," he says. "Those guys were the inspiration that got me going. If it wasn't for that kind of music, I couldn't do what I'm doing now."

As for what that is, Morrison keeps it simple: "I'm basically a working musician doing the same thing as when I started out, except that I'm better and more successful. But I'm doing the same thing I've been doing for over forty years now. It's what I do. It's who I am."

Прослушал последний опус Вэна "Мэджик тайм"...
Произвёл неоднозначные впечатления... Вроде всё грамотно, звучит по-моррисоновски, отлично прописанный альбом...но, что-то не то: то ли излишняя эклектика, которая несколько удивляет..., как-будто собрано с "миру по нотке" (тройка эстрадных каверов + авторский материал, разбросанный по разл.стилям) Кажется, что автор, не вылазил из старого айриш-паба, подслушивал "джук-бокс" и оттуда черпал настроение-вдохновение..."Даун зе роуд" в своей ретроспективе слушается, имхо, более целостно и сбалансировано по настрою, а тут....
Может быть, я и ошибаюсь...Интересно было бы послушать мнение поклонников Вэна...

Я согласен, Мэджик тайм не очень волшебный(загадочный, колдовской). Я закоренелый 60-ер и Them остались для меня Them. Ирландский паб и немного соул...пожалуй это сейчас и остается. Как говорится, "виноград залез в бутылку". С Бердоном похожая картина, так и не нашел селфайдентити после Зверей, хотя попытки интересные были.

почему дедушки и бабушки лучше понимают внукоф? Может, и те и другие одинаково близки к корням-простоте-природе-элементарного: одни - потому что "юнны не обученны и не порочны", другие - "потому что мудры и..."

Выходит, мы оба ошибаемся :)
Когда Девятый вал сумлевающихся достигнет ирландских берегов, глядь, и новый (более впечатляющий) альбом от Вэна появится...

А мне Magiс Time понравился. Она не лучше, чем некоторые предыдущие работы Вэна зе Мэна, но все же это отличная пластинка, и я получил абсолютно то, на что рассчитывал.

Van Morrison hopes to revive some old recordings that never made it onto an album and put them together as part of a series of discs called The Unreleased Masters. "We might get one out in October, some stuff from the early '70s," says the singer-songwriter. "It's very exciting for me. It's fresh and new because I haven't heard it in so long." Morrison currently is touring Europe in support of his Magic Time album.

А мне лично большего всего радует именно последний альбом. Наконец-то Вэн себя нашел,жалко столько лет к этому шел. Раньше как-то не с большим удовольствием его слушал,а тут токой альбом. Просто шедевр! Все меняется,а Country вечно!

It's now been more than four decades since Van Morrison left his native
Belfast to embark on a career as a professional musician. And while there
will be a number of people buying this third volume of highlights from that
career who remember the days of Them, and others who picked up the story
with legendary late 1960s/early 1970s albums like 'Astral Weeks' and
'Moondance,' there is yet another generation that tuned in during the
1980s.

The first 'Best Of Van Morrison' made the UK Top 5, proof that his fan
base was still expanding after a quarter of a century at the cutting edge

Van Morrison catalogue reissues 2008/09

London 27 Nov 2007 - Van Morrison and Exile Productions in association with Polydor/Universal are pleased to announce the worldwide release of the Van Morrison back catalogue commencing January 2008.

This worldwide exclusive release covers 29 albums from 1971’s Tupelo Honey through to 2002’s Down The Road and includes the 1997 Two CD collection The Story of Them. The albums are being remastered and will include bonus material, none of which has been previously available.

Each album will include original artwork and full lyrics to Van Morrison compositions. The first series of 7 albums will be released on January 28th followed by a further 3 sets, all retailing at mid-price.
