LIVERPOOL'Ss favourite sons have found themselves caught up in a council row
in a small town in Holland.
The city fathers of Venlo council have given the thumbs down to Beatles fan
and bar owner Fred Honig's vivid tribute to the Fab Four.
Fred's Yellow Submarine Cafe is brightly decorated in the style of the
band's psychedelic 60s feature cartoon.
But the Blue Meanie bureaucrats of Venlo council have ordered Fred to paint
over the design and remove portraits of John, Paul, George and Ringo - or
face a stiff fine.
Mr Honig said: "They told me my cartoons don't fit in with the image of
Venlo's streets and I must paint over it.
"They said the shop front is too cluttered and has too much advertising.
"It made me very sad to think of painting over the Beatles and my cartoon. I
had it specially commissioned a year ago and a local artist called Leon
Beeters designed it.
"At least 300 customers have signed my petition and I am planning to write
to the Mayor of Venlo."
Mr Honig, 32, opened the cafe nine years ago and gradually filled it with
memorabilia, including statues, puppets, records, autographs and a replica
of Macca's guitar.
He said: "I have loved the Beatles since I was four years old but my wife
Esta won't let me have any Beatles stuff in the house so I have to keep it
in the bar. "Many people in Venlo are Beatles fans and all my customers
love them. We play a lot of Beatles music. "I would love to visit Liverpool
and see their home."
A spokeswoman for Venlo council said: "The city quality commission thought
the cartoons weren't nice and didn't fit in with the surrounding
environment - they were too much and the colours were too bright. "We told
Mr Honig to take them down or paint over them." Venlo, population 90,000, is
near the border with Germany. Bart Ebisch, a reporter on the town's
newspaper, said: "The Yellow Submarine is a highlight in Parade Street. "We
have been campaigning with Mr Honig. Many of us in Holland are big Beatles
fans."
