Linda McCartney's First Husband Commits Suicide

03/22/2000 4:00 PM, Yahoo! Music
Craig Rosen

(3/22/00, 4 p.m. ET) - Linda McCartney's first husband, Joseph Melville See Jr., reportedly committed suicide at his home in Tucson, Arizona. See, a 62-year-old geologist and anthropologist, apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and his body was discovered in his home on Sunday (March 19), reports Reuters.

See married Linda Eastman in the '60s, and the couple had one daughter, Heather, who is now 37. There was no ill will between the couple when they divorced and Linda married the Beatles's Paul McCartney.

See was rumored to be the "Jo Jo" mentioned in the Beatles's hit, "Get Back," which includes the lyric: "Jo Jo left his home in Tucson, Arizona, for some California grass."

Friends close to See report that he had been "very depressed and disoriented lately," but also believe his suicide had nothing to do with his former wife's death two years ago.

Being For The Benefit Of Mr.Kite!

For The Benefit of Mr. Kite
Pablo Fanque, Mr. Kite and the Hendersons were never more than colorful names to John, but records show that 150 years ago, they were real stars in the circus world. Mr. Kite was William Kite, son of circus proprietor James Kite, and an all-round performer. He is believed to have worked in Pablo Fanque's Circus from 1843 to 1845.

Pablo Fanque
Pablo Fanque was a multi-talented performer who became the first black circus proprietor in Britain. His real name was William Darby and he was born in Norwich in 1796. He started calling himself Pablo Fanque in the 1830's.

The Hendersons were wire-walker, equestrian, tramplinist and clown John Henderson and his wife Agnes, the daughter of circus owner Henry Hengler. The Hendersons travelled all over Europe and Russia during the 1840's and 1850's. The 'somersets' which Mr. Henderson performed on 'solid ground' were somersaults, 'garters' were were banners held between two people and a 'trampoline' in those days was a wooden springboard rather than stretched canvas.

DOCTOR ROBERT

"Doctor Robert" is a song by The Beatles on the album Revolver, recorded April 15, 1966 with vocals overdubbed April 16. The song took 7 takes. The Beatles were often accused of putting drug references in their songs though they claimed that they hadn’t intentionally done so; ironically, the drug references in this song went largely unnoticed. "Dr. Robert" was written about a New York physician who became known for injecting "vitamin" shots — laced with amphetamines — to his celebrity patients. This Dr. Robert Freymann was a 60-year old German physician who boasted having 100 celebrity patients in the 1960s. He lost his license in 1968 and was removed from the New York Medical Society in 1975. He died in 1987.

Dr. Robert has also been incorrectly identified by several sources as a Dr. Charles Roberts but this name was an alias given by Edie Sedgwick — the anorexic "superstar" in several of Andy Warhol’s films — to protect the identity of another doctor who was rather liberal with dispensing drugs.

It has also been rumoured that the song is about the Beatles' friend and art dealer Robert Freeman.

PAUL MCCARTNEY

UNCLE ALBERT/ADMIRAL HALSEY

Fleet Admiral William Frederick Halsey, Jr.

William Frederick Halsey, Jr., was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, on October 30, 1882, the son of the late Captain William F. Halsey, U. S. Navy. As a Navy junior, he made the usual round of schools prior to his appointment to the Naval Academy. President McKinley gave him an appointment in 1900.

While at the Naval Academy he distinguished himself in class committees and athletics, but not in scholarship. He was a member of the "Lucky Bag" yearbook staff, won his letter in football as a fullback and was president of the Athletic Association. As a First Classman, he had his name engraved on the Thompson Trophy Cup as the Midshipman who had done the most during the year for the promotion of athletics.

Upon graduation in February 1904, he was assigned to USS Missouri and later transferred to USS Don Juan de Austria in which he was commissioned an Ensign after having completed the two years at sea -- then required by law. In 1907, he joined USS Kansas and made the famous World Cruise of the Fleet in that battle ship.

For the next almost 25 years practically all his sea duty with the Fleet was in destroyers, starting in 1909 with command of USS DuPont (TB-7 commissioned in 1897), USS Lamson, USS Flusser and USS Jarvis. In 1915 he went ashore for two years of duty in the Executive Department at the Naval Academy.

During WWI he served in the Queenstown Destroyer Force in command of USS Benham and USS Shaw. From 1918 to 1921 he continued his destroyer service in command of USS Yarnell, USS Chauncey, USS John Francis Burnes and Destroyer Division Thirty-two. In October of 1920 he assumed command of USS Wickes and of Destroyer Division Fifteen. At that time a destroyer division commander also commanded the division flagship. Another shore cruise sent him to duty in the Office of Naval Intelligence, in Washington, -- which was his only duty assignment in that city. In October 1922, he was ordered as Naval Attache at the American Embassy in Berlin, Germany. One year later, he was given additional duty as Naval Attache at the American Embassies in Christiana, Norway; Copenhagen, Denmark; and Stockholm, Sweden.

On completion of that cruise he returned to sea duty, again in the destroyers in European waters, in command of USS Dale and USS Osborne. Upon his return to the U.S. in 1927, he served one year as Executive Officer of the battleship USS Wyoming -- and then for three years in command of USS Reina Mercedes, station ship at the Naval Academy. He continued his destroyer duty on his next two-years at cruise starting in 1930 as Commander Destroyer Division Three of the Scouting Force. In 1932 he went as a student to the Naval War College.

Then in 1934, he embarked on his aviation career when he reported to the Naval Air Station, Pensacola for flight training. He was designated a Naval Aviator on 15 May 1935, and went in command of the carrier USS Saratoga for two years, followed by one year in command of the Naval Air Station, Pensacola. In 1938, when he reached flag rank, he held successive commands of Carrier Division Two in USS Yorktown and Carrier Division One in Saratoga. In 1940, he became Commander Aircraft Battle Force with the rank of Vice Admiral. He was in USS Enterprise in that command when World War II broke out. In April 1942 he was designated Commander Task Force Sixteen, in Enterprise to escort the carrier USS Hornet to within 800 miles of Tokyo to launch the Army planes for the initial bombing of Japan.

In October l942 he was made Commander South Pacific Forces and South Pacific Area. With the rank of Admiral, and for the next 18 months he was in command of that area during the offensive operations of the U. S. Forces. In June 1944 he assumed command of the Third Fleet, and was designated Commander Western Pacific Task Forces. As such, he operated successfully against the Japanese in the Palaies, Philippines, Formosa, Okinawa and South China Sea. Subsequent to the Okinawa campaign in July 1945, his forces struck at Tokyo and the Japanese mainland. The last attack of his forces was on 13 August 1945. Admiral Halsey's flag was flying on USS Missouri on 2 September in Tokyo Bay when the formal Japanese surrender was signed onboard.

Immediately thereafter, 54 ships of the Third Fleet, with his four-star flag in USS South Dakota, returned to the United States for annual Navy Day Celebrations in San Francisco on 27 October 1945. He hauled down his flag in November of that year and was assigned special duty in the office of the Secretary of the Navy. On December 11, 1945, he took the oath as Fleet Admiral becoming the fourth and last officer to hold the rank.

Later, Fleet Admiral Halsey made a goodwill flying trip through Central and South America covering nearly 28,000 miles, and 11 nations. He was relieved of active duty in December 1946, and upon his own request transferred to the retired list on 1 March 1947. Upon retirement, he joined the board of two subsidiaries of the International Telephone and Telegraph Company and served until 1957. He was active in an unsuccessful effort to preserve the USS Enterprise as a national shrine, and was an elected Honorary Vice President of the Naval Historical Foundation.

He died on 16 August 1959 at Fishers Island Country Club.

Uncle Albert was a real uncle of McCartney's who would quote and read from the Bible when he got drunk. The only time he read from the Bible was when he was drinking.

THE CONTINUING STORY OF BUNGALOW BILL

"So Captain Marvel zapped in right between the eyes..."

Captain Marvel is a comic book superhero, originally published by Fawcett Comics and now owned by DC Comics. Created in 1939 by artist C.C. Beck and writer Bill Parker, the character first appeared in Whiz Comics #2 (Feb, 1940). With a premise that taps into adolescent fantasy, Captain Marvel is the alter ego of Billy Batson, a youth who works as a radio news reporter and was chosen to be a champion of good by the wizard Shazam. Whenever Billy speaks the wizard's name, he is instantly struck by a magic lightning bolt that transforms him into an adult Superman-like hero empowered with the abilities of six mythological figures. Several friends and family members, most notably Marvel Family cohorts Mary Marvel and Captain Marvel, Jr., can share Billy's power and become "Marvels" themselves.

MEAN MR.MUSTARD

Written by Lennon, this song was inspired by a newspaper article about an old miser who would conceal his cash wherever he could hide it, to prevent others from forcing him to spent it. Another inspiration was a "bag lady," that Lennon observed one day who used to hang out in Hyde Park near Kinightsbridge. She kept all her possessions in a plastic bag and sleep in the park.

SUN KING

In 1971 John said that "Sun King" came to him in a dream, but in 1980 he said it was "garbage". This song by Lennon reminds me of a combination of I Am the Walrus and Because. It contains basically nonsense, combined with wonderful harmonies, making it a really beautiful song. The closing lines are nothing more than Italian, Spanish and Portugese words which are more common to tourists. John Lennon, in 1969 said, "We just started joking, you know, singing `quando para mucho.' So we just made up... Paul knew a few Spanish words from school, you know. So we just strung any Spanish words that sounded vaguely like something. And of course we got `chicka ferdy' in, a Liverpool expression. "Chicka ferdy" could also be a combination Spanish/Liverpudlian pun "chica verde" [green girl] or just like `na-na, na-na-na'-- "as one child would say to taunt another." `Cake and eat it' is another nice line too, because they have that in Spanish-- 'Que' or something, and eat it." In this song, The Beatles freely mixed dialects and languages here, (Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese) and when this is combined with less than perfect enunciation and accent, many uncertainties arise, leading to many possible interpretations. The words are as published: "Quando paramucho mi amore de felice corazon Mundo paparazzi mi amore chica ferdy parasol Cuesto obrigado tanta mucho que can eat it carousel" "Parasol" is an umbrella, of course, but literally translates as "para sole" as in for the sun, or perhaps "pa re sole" for sun king. "Paparazzi" are people who take pictures of celebrities. "que can eat it" should be "que/cake and eat it", "carousel" is a popular brand of chocolates in Britain. "Obrigado" is Portuguese [thank you], or "obbligato" [musical term - secondary, yet necessary part] A literal translation would most likely be: Quando para mucho mi amore de felice corazon "If/When For Much, My Love Of Happy Heart" Mundo paparazzi mi amore chicka/chica ferdy/verde para sole "World Paparazzi, My Love, Chicka/Girl Ferdy/Green For The Sun Cuesto obrigado, tanta mucho, que/cake and eat it, carousel/cara sole This Thanks, Very Much, Cake and Eat It, Carousel/Dearest Sun Regardless, I think it's still a rather cool song!

DEAR PRUDENCE

This song written by John is a tribute to Prudence Farrow, the sister of Mia Farrow. She inspired the song for Lennon at the Maharishi's retreat, when she would not join the activities, staying instead in long periods of meditation. The others wanted her to join them and Lennon enticed her to join in. Lennon improved on the song by adding visions of world beauty. It was probably the only positive song to come out of Lennon's many visits to India.

MARTHA MY DEAR

The name for this song by Paul came from his Old English Sheepdog. But, it wasn't about a dog, but was another of Paul's songs directed at his former love interest Jane Asher. Although but this time in 1968 Paul had started dating Linda Eastman, in this song, Paul is asking Jane not to forget him, as he believed they were really meant for each other. Paul went on to marry Linda in 1969, and Jane married cartoonist Gerald Scarfe in 1981, a relationship formed in the seventies.

Lennon wrote this song in Paul's style as a tribute and dedication to his late mother, Julia Lennon, and to Yoko. Translated into English, Yoko means "ocean child." Half of what I say is meaningless, but I say it just to reach you, Julia,

Давайте весь Хард Дейз Райт сюда перепечатаем :)

Вот например:

THE CONTINUING STORY OF BUNGALOW BILL
Bungalow Bill, the song says, 'Went out tiger hunting with his elephant and gun. In case of accidents he always took his mum.' Written by John while in India, it recounts the true story of Richard Cooke III, a young American college graduate, who visited his mother Nancy while she was on the course in Rishikesh.
John described Bungalow Bill as "the all-American bullet-headed Saxon mother's son" and Cooke agrees that it was an accurate description of him when he first met the Beatles. Cooke is over 6ft tall and was, on this occasion, dressed in white and sporting a crew cut. "The other Beatles were always real nice to me but John was always aloof, he says. "They epitomized the counter culture and I was the classic good American boy and college athlete. There wasn't a whole bunch that we got to connect on."
The tiger hunt itself took place about three hours away from Rishikesh and involved Cooke and his mother travelling by elephant and then hiding in a tree on a wooden platform known as a marchand.
"Rik sat down and I stood behind him," remembers Nancy. "It wasn't long before I saw this flash of yellow and black. I let out a yell and Rik twirled and shot the tiger right through the ear."
"I was pretty excited that I had shot a tiger," remembers Cooke. "But the Texan who organized the shoot came over to me and said, 'You shot it, but don't say a word. As far as the world is concerned you didn't shoot this tiger.' He wanted to be the one who went back home with the skin and the claws as his trophy."
It was when they arrived at the ashram that Cooke began to feel some remorse wondering whether the killing of the animal would bring him 'bad karma'. He and his mother had a meeting with Maharishi which was also attended by John and Paul.
"It was a fluke that they happened to be sitting there when I had this conversation with Maharishi," says Cooke. "My mother is a very vocal person and she was talking excitedly about killing the tiger and Maharishi looked pretty aghast that his followers could actually go out and do something like this. It was the only time I ever saw time almost angry."
"Rik told him that he felt bad about it and said that he didn't think he'd ever kill an animal again," recalls Nancy. "Maharishi said - 'You had the desire Rik and now you no longer have the desire?' Then John asked, 'Don't you call that slightly life destructive?' I said, 'Well John, it was either the tiger or us. The tiger was jumping right where we were'. That came up in the lyric as 'If looks could kill it would have been us instead of him.'"
John came up with the name Bungalow Bill for Cooke as a play on Buffalo Bill, the performing name of American showman William Frederick Cody (1846-1917) who was a hero in post-war schoolboy comics. He chose 'Bungalow' because all the accommodation in Rishikesh was in bungalows.
Cooke knew nothing of 'Bungalow Bill' until he started getting postcards saying 'Hey Bungalow Bill. What did you kill?' from friends who had recognized him in the song. He now divides his time between Hawaii and Oregon and works as a photographer for National Geographic magazine. His mother Nancy lives in Beverley Hills, California.

Или вот:

PAPERBACK WRITER

Paperbacks had caused a revolution in post-war publishing, making books available to people who would have found hardbacks too expensive to buy. Poet Royston Ellis, the first published author the Beatles had ever met when they played music backing his poetry in I960, is convinced that Paul latched on to the phrase 'paperback writer' from his conversations with them. "Although I was writing poetry books then, if they asked me what I wanted to be I would always say 'a paperback writer' because that's what you had to be if you wanted to reach a mass market," says Ellis, who went on to become a writer of travel books and plantation novels. "My
ambition was to be a writer who sold his books and made money out of it. It was my equivalent of their ambition of making a million-selling single."
As with many Beatles' songs, the lyric was driven more by the sound of the words than their logic. Taken literally, it's about a paperback writer who has written a novel based on another novel, whjch is also about a paperback writer. The 'man named Lear' is probably a reference to Edward Lear, the Victorian painter who, although he never wrote a novel, did write nonsense poems and songs which John loved. The Daily Mail gets a mention because it was John's regular newspaper and it often would be lying around the Weybridge house when they were writing. Stories from the Daily Mail would later be used as inspiration for two songs on Sgt Pepper.
The main musical innovation on 'Paperback Writer' was the boosted bass sound. Paul was now playing a Rickenbacker and, through some studio innovations made by engineer Ken Townsend, the bass became the most prominent instrument on the track, bringing it into line with recent American recordings by Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett.
'Paperback Writer' was a Number I single in many countries including Britain, America, Germany and Australia.

JOHN SINCLAIR

Crisler Arena,

A Hard Day's Wright (Steve Turner) книга хорошая, спору нет, однако в ней
представлены далеко не все персоналии.

Например, сам до сих пор хочу знать:
- кто такая Anna, которая Go To Him?
- кто такой Rudolf, который Red Nose, который Reggae?
- кто такая Magill, она же Lil, она же Nancy?
