Beatles festival 40 years later

THE Beatles' original drummer, Pete Best, and John Lennon's half-sister, Julia Baird, will visit Adelaide as part of the inaugural Australian Beatles Festival in June.

Best -- who played with the Beatles at Liverpool's famous Cavern Club and in Hamburg from 1959 to 1962 -- and Baird will share personal memories of the band at forum sessions.

The festival, to be held on the Queen's Birthday long weekend from June 11 to 14, will have the theme "It Was Forty Years Ago Today" and mark the 40th anniversary of the Beatles' only visit to Australia.

Adelaide gave the Beatles their biggest public welcome anywhere in the world on June 12, 1964, when an estimated 300,000 people -- a third of the population -- lined streets from the airport, along Anzac Highway to the South Australian Hotel in the city.

On June 12 and 13, tribute bands from around Australia and overseas will perform a "Beatlefest" at Centennial Hall, presenting Beatles music in a range of musical styles from jazz to contemporary.

Artists will include Victorian tribute band Where's Ringo?

The Beatle/s To Play Melbourne

On June 15, 1964 The Beatles performed at Festival Hall in Melbourne, Australia. On June 15, 2004, The Beatle/s will perform in Melbourne to mark the 40th Anniversary.

The Beatle/s are a Beatles tribute band. They will play an entire set of Beatles material on the night with support from the original support bands for The Beatles all those years ago.

The Beatle/s will be joined by Johnny Chester, Johnny Devlin, The Phantoms and Sounds Incorporated.

At the end of the show, there is another treat. For the first time ever, The Beatles original film footage from the Melbourne show will premiere for the first time ever on the big screen. The footage was only ever screened once before on Channel 9 in Australia in 1964.

Over the month of June, a Beatles exhibition will be held at Her Majesty's Theatre in Melbourne featuring interviews, photographs and rare memorabilia.

The Gala concert featuring The Beatle/s will be on June 15 at Her Majesty's Theatre.

Beatles 40th Celebrated In Melbourne

Melbourne, Australia played host to a one off event to mark the 40th anniversary of The Beatles performing in the city. A film of the original concert was digitally restored and played on the big screen for the very first time anywhere in the world.

Permission for the screening of the film during this celebration was granted on a strictly limited license by Apple Records in London. The film can only ever be screened over the three nights the Get Back performance is on in Melbourne.

Last night, a gala performance took place with original Beatles drummer Pete Best and Abbey Road studios engineer Richard Lush in attendance.

Best spoke to the audience saying how after all this time it has still never been explained to him why he was fired from the Fab Four. Best was the drummer before Ringo and played on the single version of 'Love Me Do'. His performance was replaced with Ringo's on the album version. Best explained how he was called into Brian Epstein's office one day and told that John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison wanted him out. By the end of the week, Ringo was the new drummer and the rest was history.

The recent Beatles Anthology albums featured 10 tracks featuring Pete Best. He said he felt that the inclusion of the songs was in some way was The Beatles way of making up to him.

Beatles covers band The Beat/es performed in character and Russell Morris, Jim Keays and Daryl Cotton performed a set of Beatles songs for the crowd.

A month long exhibition of photographs from the tour is currently on display at Her Majesty's Theatre in Melbourne.

Fan Strikes Beatles Gold In Australia

A long-hidden cache of Beatles memorabilia, including nearly priceless studio tapes of the Fab Four, was discovered by chance by a United Kingdom native on vacation in Australia. Experts say the value of the find, purchased at a flea market, is already likely to run into tens of thousands of pounds.

But if the tapes, which recording experts have yet to examine, turn out to be unheard recordings of the group, the value is likely to be truly phenomenal. The tapes are in sealed containers indicating they come from the Abbey Road studios where the Beatles recorded. They are marked "not for use."

Kent native Fraser Claughton stumbled on the find by chance when he made a last-minute trip to Australia to attend a friend's 50th birthday party. Beyond the recordings, he obtained hundreds of photographs taken of the Beatles at the height of Beatlemania, along with a mountain of documentation relating to their recordings. Some of the items bear original signatures of group members.

Fraser made the discovery, which he describes as "finding the end of the rainbow in Australia," while he was hunting for a cheap suitcase. "Now I've been told that to collectors the photographs, books, magazines and documents alone are worth a fortune," he says. "The documents in the main are recording sheets for some of the best-known Beatles hits. And the tapes, if they turn out to be unheard material, could be almost priceless."

Fraser is planning to sell the material in individual lots via the Internet.

New Beatles songs discovered in 'lost' archive: report

LONDON : Previously unheard songs by the Beatles could be among a treasure trove of material related to the band found inside an old suitcase at a flea market, a report said late Monday.

Beatles experts had yet to properly examine the cache -- thought to have once belonged to one of the British band's close associates -- but are hopeful that tapes within it could contain new material, the Times newspaper said.

The battered suitcase was bought earlier this year by a British holidaymaker in Lara, a town near the Australian city of Melbourne, for just 50 Australian dollars (29 euros, 36 dollars), the Times said in its Tuesday edition.

Fraser Claughton was simply looking for a cheap suitcase to carry his possessions but snapped up the case when he saw it contained a jumble of around 400 photographs, concert programmes and sealed tapes marked "Abbey Road" -- the Beatles' favoured recording studio.

"It was like finding the end of the rainbow in Australia," he was quoted as saying by the paper.

Experts told the Times that it was believed the case contained the long-lost archive of Mal Evans, who worked as a sometime sound recordist and additional musician for the Beatles, and died in 1976.

Rumours of his collection, which he compiled for a planned but never completed memoir, have circulated among Beatles collectors for years.

Among tapes inside the case were alternative versions of well-known songs such as "We Can Work It Out" as well as some new material, a pop memorabilia consultant for auctioneers Christie's told the Times.

"It certainly does tie in with Mal Evans. He had access to the Beatles making music when there was no one else around," Peter Doggett said.

"There has been much debate as to what happened to his memorabilia. It is possible that this is it, or part of it."

One four-and-a-half hour recording on reel-to-reel tape in the suitcase includes Beatles Paul McCartney and John Lennon talking as they experiment with previously unknown versions of songs, the paper added.

The archive could be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds (euros, dollars) if sold, Doggett said.
