Но за юморную мошь восьмиминутной "4 Hours Straight/Blues Man" можно простить и неудачный кавер "I'm In The Mood" и некоторую эклектичность: тут и смуз-джэз "I Got To Be Me" и фанковые навороты с мочными духовыми и требьют папе ...

Antone's Home Of The BluesAntone's Home Of The Blues
11/09/2006

This critically acclaimed documentary celebrates the illustrious history of the club as well as its founder/owner, lifetime blues devotee Clifford Antone. Antone, who passed away in 2006 was one of the pioneers of showcasing the blues and this film gives a valuable insight into the many iconic performances that graced his stage.

Taking an unprecedented look at the musical heart and soul of a nation, Antone's Home of the Blues lovingly chronicles the man, the place and the musicians that have made Antone's "the nation's best blues club". Packed with vintage performances the film is highlighted by onstage footage of Albert Collins, Sue Foley, Buddy Guy, Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, Jimmie Vaughan, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Kim Wilson.

In addition to the music Antone's Home of the Blues also features interviews with Clifford Antone, B.B. King, Marcia Ball, Joe Ely, ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons and Willie Nelson.

Отличный диск.

Gifted young guitarist thrilled to play with Clapton

GRAND RAPIDS -- Face it: Being asked to play guitar in Eric Clapton's band
is like writing a song for Bob Dylan, cooking dinner for Emeril or whipping
up a little painting for Picasso.

The pressure's on, and Derek Trucks loves it.

"It's something I never imagined would come along," Trucks said in a recent
phone interview. "What's interesting with him (Clapton) is that he's got
this personality that you don't feel awkward playing with someone of his
stature.

"With him, there's real humility to it. You feel very much a part of it. I
realize I'm on stage with his band, and I defer to him with any major
decisions. But you still feel comfortable; you don't have to musically
tiptoe too much."

The 27-year-old Trucks, already heralded as one of rock music's most gifted
guitar-slingers, probably doesn't need to tiptoe around anybody on stage,
considering the universal acclaim he's earned as a member of the Allman
Brothers Band and fronting his own outfit, the Derek Trucks Band.

But mounting a much-anticipated North American arena tour and playing
alongside one of his childhood heroes -- the Grammy-winning musician who has
delivered timeless riffs with the Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith, Delaney &
Bonnie, Derek and the Dominoes and as a solo superstar -- ranks as a true
career highlight.

Trucks joined Clapton's band for European tours after meeting the guitarist
last summer, recommended for the gig by another of Clapton's talented axmen,
Doyle Bramhall II.

On Thursday, Trucks will be on the Van Andel Arena stage when Clapton makes
his first appearance in Grand Rapids, the fourth stop on a U.S. tour that
kicked off Saturday in Minnesota.

"There have definitely been a few moments. It's a little surreal getting to
play tunes with a guy that created a role that I'm in: an electric blues
guitar player," Trucks said.

"There's a certain amount of professionalism he has that is nice being
around and soaking up. He is a professional. He knows what he's doing, even
down to the bands he puts around him. It's nice to see somebody who's
completely on top of their game at all levels."

At 61, Clapton remains at the top of his game, selling out venues across the
United States and Europe with a band that any rocker would envy: Bramhall
and Trucks on guitar, Chris Stainton and Tim Carmon on keyboards, Steve
Jordan on drums, Willie Weeks on bass and Michelle John and Sharon White on
backing vocals.

The vastly influential British guitarist, a triple inductee into the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame (with Cream, The Yardbirds and as a solo act), has
been performing "electric, full-band versions" of rock standards such as
"Layla," along with other classics from the Cream and Derek and the Dominoes
catalogs, Trucks said.

"They're all just great tunes, that whole era of tunes," Trucks said. "It's
really exciting touring Europe and getting to see those places that I've
never been, but I'm really looking forward to the hometown crowds. I think
there's going to be a certain edge to the dates that I really look forward
to."

For Trucks, the genius behind Clapton's guitar-playing lies in his
restraint.

"There's that fine line of having this edge and being understated at the
same time," said Trucks, who cites Clapton, Duane Allman and Jimi Hendrix as
his strongest early influences.

"That sets a goal for my playing: To be able to be over the top at times or
really shoot for it, but also retain that understated tastefulness. When I'm
listening to him, he'll play an amazing, inspired solo, but I still feel
like there's more to it. It keeps people coming back. That sense of mystery
and restraint is nice.

"When you do overdo it, I don't think you ever recover from that. With him,
I feel there's never a risk of that. He's in complete control, even when
he's musically taking chances or going out on a limb."

Celebrated blues guitarist Robert Cray echoed Trucks' sentiments.

"It's taste. He shows a lot of taste and a lot of restraint. That's what I
like about a lot of the players I enjoy," said Cray, who has been opening on
the tour as well as sitting in with Clapton's band on songs such as
"Crossroads" and "Old Love" (which he co-wrote).

"It's a great band. It's a good show. Eric puts himself with the people he
plays with. He's not standoffish or anything like that."

Trucks also helped record tracks for Clapton's
as-yet-unfinished-and-unreleased solo album. The Clapton projects have added
to a hectic schedule that already included releasing a new Derek Trucks Band
album early this year, touring with the Allman Brothers and spending time
between gigs with his wife, singer Susan Tedeschi, and family.

"I'm pretty sure my band will be the focus as soon as things slow down," he
said. "Maybe we'll do a tour with Susan. There's a lot of ideas floating
around. I try not to think too far ahead."

For now, Trucks is focused on getting increasingly comfortable as a member
of Clapton's band. He said things really started to click at the end of the
first leg of the band's European tour.

"I remember one moment looking over and, for the first time, I felt like it
was a real band," he said. "Once you get over the initial shock and surprise
of being part of it ... that's what's exciting."

Shemekia Copeland Named ’Blues Artist of The Year’

Readers of Living Blues magazine's annual Reader's Poll voted singing sensation Shemekia Copeland as Blues Artist Of The Year (Female). Copeland's latest CD, THE SOUL TRUTH, produced by legendary guitarist Steve Cropper, was widely hailed as the strongest of her career. Born in Harlem, New York in 1979, Shemekia came to her singing career slowly. "I never knew I wanted to sing until I got older," says Copeland. "But my dad knew ever since I was a baby. He just knew I was gonna be a singer." Her father, the late Texas blues guitar legend Johnny Clyde Copeland, recognized his daughter's talent early on. He always encouraged her to sing at home and even brought her on stage to sing at Harlem's famed Cotton Club when she was just eight. At that time Shemekia's embarrassment outweighed her desire to sing. But when she was 15 and her father's health began to slow him down, she received the calling. "It was like a switch went off in my head," recalls Shemekia, "and I wanted to sing. It became a want and a need. I had to do it."

Shemekia's passion for singing, matched with her huge, blast-furnace voice, gives her music the timeless power and heart-pounding urgency of a very few greats who have come before her. The media has compared her to a young Etta James, Koko Taylor, Aretha Franklin and Ruth Brown, but Shemekia - who was raised in the tough, urban streets of Harlem - has her own story to tell. Although schooled in Texas blues by her father, Shemekia's music comes from deep within her soul and from the streets she grew up on, where a daily dose of city sounds - from street performers to gospel singers to blasting radios to bands in local parks - surrounded her.

With all this experience under her belt, 16-year-old Shemekia joined her father on his tours after he was diagnosed with a heart condition. Soon enough Shemekia was opening, and sometimes even stealing, her father's shows. "She grabbed the crowd with her powerful voice, poised and intense," raved Blues Revue at the time. Eventually, though, it became clear to Shemekia who was helping whom. "Dad wanted me to think I was helping him out by opening his shows when he was sick, but really, he was doing it all for me. He would go out and do gigs so I would get known. He went out of his way to get me that exposure," recalls Shemekia.

Shemekia stepped out of her father's shadow in 1998 when Alligator released TURN THE HEAT UP to massive popular and critical acclaim. Rave reviews ran everywhere from Billboard to The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The Chicago Sun-Times, The Boston Globe, Emerge and many others. "Nothing short of uncanny," said The Village Voice. "She roars with a sizzling hot intensity," shouted The Boston Globe. She appeared in the motion picture Three To Tango, and her song I Always Get My Man was featured in another Hollywood film, Broken Hearts Club. She even guested on the television program Early Edition.

In 2000 she returned with WICKED. Almost immediately the young singer was in great demand at radio, television and in the press. The opening song, It's 2:00 A.M., won the Blues Music Award for Song Of The Year, and the album was nominated for a Grammy© Award. She appeared twice on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, and also performed on National Public Radio's Weekend Edition and the CBS Saturday Early Show. In November 2001, she appeared on Austin City Limits to an enthusiastic live audience and on television to millions more old and new fans all across the country.

With her Dr. John-produced follow-up, TALKING TO STRANGERS, Shemekia again turned up the heat, with far-reaching material treading the ground where blues and soul meet rock and roll. The album debuted in the #1 spot on the Billboard Blues Chart and received critical praise all around the world. The Associated Press declared, "Copeland blazes through TALKING TO STRANGERS with fervor and grace. Her singing can be as thunderous as Etta James and as mellow as Chaka Khan." Vibe agreed, saying, "TALKING TO STRANGERS is a masterful blend of ballsy rockers and cheeky ballads." Features and reviews ran in The Washington Post, Billboard, Essence, Vibe, USA Today, DownBeat, Ebony and many other national and regional publications. She appeared on the Late Show With David Letterman (along with B.B. King), was featured in the Martin Scorsese-produced concert film Lightning In A Bottle, the PBS television series The Blues and even opened a show for the Rolling Stones in Chicago.

Influential guitarist Etta Baker diesInfluential guitarist Etta Baker dies

MORGANTON, N.C. - Etta Baker, an influential blues guitarist who recorded with Taj Mahal and was awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts, has died, her family said. She was 93.

No cause of death was given, but her health had been failing for years, The News & Observer of Raleigh reported on its Web site.

Baker died Saturday in Fairfax, Va., while visiting a daughter who had suffered a stroke.

"She just had to go, she just had to see my sister," said Darlene Davis, another daughter. "She was a great mother and a tower of strength for the family. We always looked up to her."

Baker was raised in a musical family in western North Carolina. She made her first mark in music in 1956, when she appeared on a compilation album called "Instrumental Music of the Southern Appalachians." The recording influenced the growing folk revival, especially her versions of "Railroad Bill" and "One-Dime Blues."

She worked for 26 years at a textile mill in Morganton before quitting at age 60 to pursue a career as a professional musician.

Baker became a hit on the international folk-festival circuit, playing Piedmont blues, a mix of the clattery rhythms of bluegrass and blues. She won a 1991 Folk Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Mahal, who recorded an album with Baker in 2004, was among those who found inspiration from her rhythmic finger-picking.

"I came upon that record in the '60s," Mahal said. "It didn't have any pictures so I had no idea who she was until I got to meet her years later. But man, that chord in 'Railroad Bill,' that was just the chord. It just cut right through me. I can't even describe how deep that was for me, just beautiful stuff."

Outside her musical career, Baker raised nine children. She also suffered great losses.

Her husband suffered a debilitating stroke in 1964. That same year she was in a serious car accident that killed one of her grandsons. In the span of a month in 1967, her husband died and one of her sons was killed in the Vietnam War.

Baker toured well into her 80s, but finally quit because of heart problems.

This year she no longer had the strength to play guitar so she focused on the banjo. She could still play well a month ago, said Wayne Martin, who plays fiddle on her banjo collection coming out next year.

Baker also is to appear on blues-rock guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd's next album due out in November.

"She embodied everything we love about the South," said Tim Duffy, who worked with Baker through his Music Maker Relief Foundation.

"She was strong, warm, witty, gentle; a gardener and also the world's premiere Piedmont-style blues guitarist," he said. "Like B.B. King and single-string blues, anybody who has picked up acoustic finger-style guitar has been influenced by Etta whether they know it or not."
