Bluesman 'Little' Milton in coma after stroke Wed Aug 3

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Blues musician "Little" Milton Campbell, whose gritty vocals and songwriting recalls B.B. King's rough-edged style, was in a coma after suffering a stroke, a friend said on Wednesday.

The 71-year-old Grammy-nominated guitarist and singer known for writing and recording the blues anthem "The Blues Is Alright" suffered a stroke July 27 and lapsed into a coma at a Memphis, Tennessee, hospital, friend Larry Chambers said in a telephone interview.

Born to sharecropping farmers near the Mississippi Delta town of Inverness -- his father, "Big" Milton Campbell, was a local blues musician -- "Little" Milton picked up a guitar at age 12 and recorded his first hit for Sam Phillips' Sun Records at age 18. It was the same year the Memphis studio recorded Elvis Presley for the first time.

Discovered by blues-rock pioneer Ike Turner, Campbell has gone on to score dozens of rhythm and blues hits and was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1988.

Though acclaimed in blues circles, Campbell has never achieved the fame of King and others in the genre. He has traveled constantly, playing mid-sized clubs and arenas.

After signing with Bobbin Records in East St. Louis, Illinois, Campbell recorded "I'm a Lonely Man" and "That Will Never Do." A long association with Chicago's Chess Records produced the 1965 hit "We're Gonna Make It," which coincided with the civil rights movement. Other hits included "Baby I Love You," "If Walls Could Talk," "Feel So Bad," "Who's Cheating Who?" and "Grits Ain't Groceries."

"Annie Mae's Cafe" and "Little Bluebird" were hits he recorded with Memphis' Stax Records, which he joined in 1971 before the label's demise. Most recently, he has recorded for The Malaco Music Group in Jackson, Mississippi, for whom he produced albums entitled "Your Wife is Cheating on Us," and his last, "A Nickel and a Nail."

His wife, Patricia, was at his side, Chambers said from Memphis. They have three children.

Mayer Needs Fans to Help Finish His Song Wed Aug 3

NEW YORK - John Mayer has writer's block — and he wants your help. The soft-voiced rocker is calling on fans to make a song out of some lyrics that didn't make it onto his upcoming album.

"I'm inviting all aspiring songwriters to write their own chords and melodies around my lyrics," Mayer writes in the September issue of Esquire, on newsstands Aug. 15. "You can tell people we wrote a song together."

Mayer, who has written a monthly column for Esquire for more than a year, urges people to send a CD of their song to the magazine's music department. The lyrics and information on submissions, due Sept. 30, can be found in the upcoming issue.

One line reads: "I've got dreams to remember, I've got days to forget/I've got some phone calls in to God but he ain't called me back just yet."

The 27-year-old singer writes that the lyrics were left over from a tune intended for "Continuum," his third studio album. The song ended up an instrumental, so Mayer is "looking to make some use of the time and emotion I spent writing (the lyrics)."

The best submissions will be featured on Esquire's Web site. Mayer will pick the winner, who will receive a Fender John Mayer Signature Stratocaster guitar.

Bluesman Little Milton Campbell Dies Thu Aug 4

JACKSON, Miss. - Mississippi bluesman Little Milton Campbell has died in a Memphis hospital from complications of a stroke, his publicist Carrie Newton confirms.

Newton said Campbell, 71, died Thursday about 8:50 a.m. Newton said no other details were being released immediately.

Campbell suffered a stroke July 27.

The Inverness native had been scheduled to perform Aug. 11 at Clarksdale's Ground Zero Blues Club for the blues documentary "Native Sons," but that performance was canceled.

Campbell's last appearance in Jackson was at The Allman Brothers Band concert in May.

His hit record "We're Gonna Make It" and his 1978 vintage black jacket were on display in Clarksdale last year as part of a "Sweet Home Chicago" exhibit at the Delta Blues Museum.

Funeral services were pending.

Campbell is survived by his wife, Patricia, and several children.

Сёдня прикупил дисочек "LITTLE AXE -- CHAMPAGNE & GRITS" (C) 2004 (RealWorld)
Очень странная, но местами весьма забавная дикая смесь блюза и даба...Поборникам чистоты стиля не рекомендуеца (имееца в виду Блюза, а для DUBовикоф, кажыся, самы раз: съедят и скажут "давай ышо! афффтар жжот!" Наверное, так и должон звучать блюз 21-го века, чтоб привлекать в свои ряды "племя младое незнакомое")...Записано очень хорошо: с дабовыми делами не сравнить : нет нарочитой грязюки саунда... Мне понравился кавер песенки Сон Хауза "Grinning In Your Face", отмечу СLOUD, FINGER ON THE TRIGGER, WALK ON WATER...
Советую послухать: интересная работа...

Уважаемый Сергей, а с какого периода Вы считаете Питера Гэ. "вечно спящим"?
Расшифруйте, пжалста... Ежели с "макофского" периода -- эт одно, ежели после "мультикоф", то эт как-то некорректно получаецца...
