"ON “I’M NOT IN LOVE”…

When I first heard “I’m Not In Love” from 10cc, I thought it was one of the best records I’d ever heard. It was very imaginative, it’s use of the synthesizers was very compelling. I thought it was enormously tuneful and a tremendous hook. I couldn’t get it out my mind. I thought it was one of the best records ever. And it still is, it still sort of strikes me as being one of the most significant independent records ever made and so I started to listen to their other tracks and certainly the musicianship was extremely good. I did like the percussion sounds very much. I thought they were very inventive and different you know, it was something that we always need a little bit of difference in our recordings and 10cc seemed to come up with it.

ON 10CC / BEATLES COMPARISONS…

There was definitely an affinity with the Beatles but I think that was true of quite a few groups. In fact the Beatles, I guess, were so influential that it would be very difficult not to be influenced by then and I think 10cc didn’t copy them so much as just use them as a kind of springboard and I didn’t really find that there was any great imitation. I didn’t think they were trying to copy them in any way. I think they were getting the best of both worlds. They were using the Beatles as an inspiration which is the way I think it should have been done and I think everybody benefited from that too.

ON WORKING WITH ERIC ON PAUL McCARTNEY ALBUMS…

I never actually worked ever with 10cc although I got to know them, of course, and of course they did their own recordings anyway. But later on, Eric Stewart and I got to know each other pretty well, because we worked with Paul McCartney on a couple of Paul’s solo albums, starting off with “Tug Of War” and “Pipes Of Peace”. And there was a kind of holy trinity if you like as when it came to vocals, Paul and Eric and Linda would be a vocal trio and they all blended together extremely well. SO when I did multi-harmonies, instead of giving each one of them a different note, I would tend to layer them. I had 5 voices to fill and I would get them all singing in unison on the one voice and then add another one. We did it that way and as a result of that, I think the harmonies were very effective. And of course Eric had an ability to blend in brilliantly with both Paul and Linda and it made a nice fusion. And he had quite a few good musical ideas, so it was very good working with him on those occasions.

ON WHETHER HE’D EVER BEEN TEMPTED TO USE AS MANY VOCAL OVERDUBS AS 10CC USED ON “I’M NOT IN LOVE”…

I guess that number of tracks you’re talking about is the overlay for that wonderful swirly sound of the backing vocals rather than the main vocals. I guess that was an attempt to get a classical Orpheus Choir with a couple of voices probably so I can understand the amount of tracks they would have used but gosh, no, I would never do it myself.

Well, “I’m Not In Love” is one of my favourite tunes and I think the reason being it was so simple, so direct. It was the kind of song that I wish I’d written."

Thinking about the new packaged Meanwhile today.... and I ask myself one
question . Why ?
Meanwhile was deleted very soon after its release. It was a dismal failure
commercially.
So other than us die hard fans who is gonna buy it ? With the price of the
making of it, it may just cover the costs. Just a thought.

Review

'I'm not in love', 'Rubber Bullets' and 'Dreadlock Holiday' - Classic tracks from one of the most interesting and talented bands to ever grace the world of music, are all included in this live collection of songs alongside new tracks and presented on DVD for the very first time.

10cc were formed in 1972 with the line up of Eric Stewart, Graham Gouldman, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. The rulebook was thrown out of the window as their unrivalled songs injected with sharp wit and lyrical dexterity plucked melodies and subject matter from previously undiscovered waters to turn the band both into chart regulars and darlings of the critics. They were one of many bands dubbed at the time as 'the new Beatles' - but unlike most of the others, 10cc actually came close to the Fab Four in terms of hits and quality. After Godley and Creme left in 1976, Eric and Graham decided to carry on as 10cc and were augmented by, amongst others, guitarist Rick Fenn and drummer Paul Burgess. And the hits kept on coming.

Then after years of lying dormant while they all pursued other ventures Graham Gouldman along with Fenn, Burgess, Mick Wilson and Mike Stevens has taken to the road again as '10cc featuring Graham Gouldman and friends'. This DVD includes two appearances that Kevin Godley made as one of the 'friends' at a gig in Cardiff - when he graced the stage for the first time in almost 30 years and again at the landmark Shepherd's Bush Empire show in London.

The set list on the DVD includes no fewer than 17 hit songs including some written by Graham for other artists including the Yardbird's For Your Love and the Hollies' Bus Stop .The DVD "Clever Clogs" also features original artwork and an interview from the originator of all of 10cc's best known album artwork the legendary designer, and founder of Hipnosis, Storm Thorgerson.

The band which includes Take That and Mika's musical director Mike Stevens and the multi talented Mick Wilson will be playing a series of concerts in support of this release including a showcase at London's indigO2venue on 1 May 2008.
