Glam rock, once also known as glitter rock, emerged in the early 1970s, a post-hippie phenomenon and antidote to all the earnest seriousness of that era. The dream was over, the stars were dead and out of the smoke of Altamont, comes what? Teenage transvestite revolution, science fiction escapism, exactly what the doctor ordered!

The man who first bridged the transition from hippies to glitter kids was probably one time model, Marc Bolan, the first to wear feather boas, glitter and top hats and write songs that no one was meant to take seriously.

The second was Bolan's friend David Bowie. Ziggy Stardust was born right after the Apollo moon landings (1969-1972) and used his gay shock tactics to great effect.

This was the era that spawned Queen, KISS, The Sweet, Slade, Mud, Gary Glitter (I was in his fan club at aged 10 but didn't know his secrets) and the Bay City Rollers.

The great cult favorite Mott the Hoople were also present, with "All The Young Dudes" provided by Bowie. And then there was Roxy Music, whose Brian Ferry became the epitome of jaded style and European cool.

It would be 20 years before we would see Glam again. David and Brian were probably sorry, too, as Ratt, Twisted Sister, Poison and Cinderella hit the airwaves.

Early years:

Though (because?) he was born with a different name, Marc Bolan was one of those rock stars who seemed to have been to the manner born. He was playing skiffle at age 9, then formed a band not long after, and by the time he was 17 he had a recording contract, no doubt helped, during the heyday of Swinging London, by his stint as a male model. His path to stardom wasn't nearly as swift, however -- first there was an aborted attempt as a teen idol named Toby Tyler, then a stint with psych-rockers John's Children, a gig Mark landed by boldly going straight to their manager's home and auditioning unasked. By 1967 he'd formed his own group, Tyrannosaurus Rex, essentially a duo of himself and drummer Steve Took. It was one of the first "freak-folk" acts, and its four albums were very well received in England.

Success:

True superstardom, however, would have to wait until the turn of the decade, when Marc, now surnamed Bolan as a tribute to his idol Bob Dylan, decided to bring his love of early rock and roll back into his sound (possibly due to the recent success of Sweet, bubblegum poppers who were moving in a harder direction). Replacing his drummer, he retooled the latest Tyrannosaurus Rex album he'd been working on, renamed the band T. Rex to indicate the new direction, and enjoyed a huge hit with the leadoff single "Ride a White Swan." His breathy vocals and fantasy-fueled lyrics, reminiscent of Tolkien, combined with his Dylanesque love of wordplay and some very basic Chuck Berry-style rock guitar, proved irresistible, especially coupled with strings and the freakishly angelic backing vocals of the Turtles' Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman. Marc began to wear makeup and boas and cover himself in glitter, and his fans followed suit. The glam rock (a/k/a "glitter rock) era was born.

Later years:

Like so many trends in the UK, glam rock was abandoned a mere two years after it was embraced, and while Bolan embraced the future, successfully incorporating both prog-rock and R&B elements into his signature sound, he was considered old news by the record industry. By 1977, however, the punk explosion had occurred, validating his less-is-more, back-to-basics approach, and he was rightly venerated by the new guard an an influence. Marc was just beginning to ride the crest of this revolution, assembling a new band and making a number of media appearances, when his girlfriend, R&B singer Gloria Jones, accidentally drove their car into a fencepost and then a tree just outside London. Gloria suffered some injuries, but Bolan was dead at 29. Bassist Steve Currie also died in a car crash a mere four years later, longtime friend and percussionist Mickey Finn died in 2003 from cirrhosis of the liver.

•The Smiths' 1986 hit "Panic" is based off the rhythm and chords of T. Rex's "Metal Guru"
