Для начала сценаристы решили проверить: а похожи ли? Поэтому Ким Миори и Марк Макгэнн вышли на улицы Нью-Йорка. Прохожие шарахались: Миори и Макгэнн похожи на Йоко Оно и Джона Леннона, которых они будут играть в телесериале «Представьте: Джон и Йоко». Джон Леннон, как известно, терпеть не мог телесериалов и «мыльных опер», так что можно представить, как он отнесся бы к подобному проекту. Маленькая деталь: сначала выбрали актера Марка Линдсея, но потом усомнились - оказалось, что его настоящее имя Марк Чэпмен (так звали убийцу Леннона). В остальном предприятие представляется безупречным: кому же не интересно «про любовь», да еще с убийством!

The docudrama stars two relatively unknown actors - Mark McGann as John Lennon and Kim Miyori as Yoko Ono - with a script by writer Sandor Stern, who also served as director. The story begins in 1966 with a Beatles concert in Memphis, Tennessee, and ends with a freeze-frame close-up of Lennon, a moment after a glimpse of the type of handgun used to assassinate him appears on the screen. The soundtrack features thirty-two songs, all but two of which are the original Lennon, Ono or Beatles recordings.

'JOHN AND YOKO: A LOVE STORY,’ A THREE-HOUR NBC television movie scheduled for broadcast December 2nd, has been produced with Yoko Ono’s consent and input But it retrains to be seen whether die finished project will get her endorsement.
The docudrama stars two relatively unknown actors - Mark McGann as John Lennon and Kim Miyori as Yoko Ono - with a script by writer Sandor Stern, who also served as director. The story begins in 1966 with a Beatles concert in Memphis, Tennessee, and ends with a freeze-frame close-up of Lennon, a moment after a glimpse of die type of handgun used to assassinate him appears on die screen. The soundtrack features thirty-two songs, all but two of which are the original Lennon, Ono or Beatles recordings.
The twenty-five minutes of rough footage of John and Yoko that was screened for critics in mid-October seemed to reveal some weaknesses in the production. The leading players seem unconvincing in some scenes, and die actors portraying die other Beatles are far from believable: it’s hard to tell Paul from George, or George from Ringo. Yoko, who had contributed dialogue to the script, seemed to have reservations of her own after seeing an early version. She has subsequently declined all interview requests relating to the film. The reason, according to die show’s publicists, is dial she doesn’t want to draw attention away from the actors.
Yoko’s relationship with the production was based on sheer pragmatism from the start. Approached by several companies wanting to do similar projects - and faced with die prospect of an unauthorized and possibly inaccurate film biography - Yoko decided her only resort was to throw her support to the most sensitive suitor. That aimed out to be Carson Productions.
"Since John’s death,” Yoko said later, "there have been many situations where my back was up against a wall. And this was one of those.”
The project came together with few hitches, despite an unfortunate fluke in die initial casting of the Lennon role. When it surfaced dial actor Mark Lindsay’s real name was Mark Chapman — die same name as that of Lennon's assassin - he was replaced by McGann.
McGann won his role despite the fact that Stem had not seen his performance in a British play called Lennon. He and Miyori, who is best known as Wendy Armstrong on NBC’s St. Elsewhere, edged out the competition by combining acting talent with a knack for imitating their characters’ singing voices.
McGann, who sings concert renditions of "Whatever Gets You thru the Night” (with Matthew Marsh, who plays Elton John) and "Come Together” in the TV film, confesses that "it’s easier to do a John Lennon impression in a live-concert setup than it is to do it in a bedroom singing Sean to sleep.” And Miyori, who sings portions of Yoko’s "Yang Yang,” says she surprised herself: "We looked at it afterward and said, 'Whoa, it’s not too bad. She’s not a Barbra Streisand voice, that’s for sure, but...’ ”
Miyori, whose main difficulty with the role was learning how to smoke, says, "I found this whole thing easy for me. Maybe it’s because I feel a certain sense of identification with die character and story.” Identification was no problem for McGann, either. Born and raised in Liverpool, he and his three brothers used to "play at being Beatles”; fittingly enough, McGann always got John’s part.
When the script was first submitted, both NBC and Yoko were concerned about its references to die couple’s involvement with drugs and politics. Stem says he told Yoko that if those well-publicized topics were side-stepped, then viewers could say, "This is a lie; therefore, everything else in the movie is a lie.” Yoko agreed.
"I think the fact that Yoko was prepared to be that candid," says Stem, "allowed [NBC executives] to relax their own concerns.”
Consequently, John and Yoko will include some scenes that, by TV standards, arc unusually harrowing: John’s heroin withdrawal, Yoko’s miscarriage, John’s defiant seduction of a woman as Yoko sits and waits in an adjoining room. But don’t expect absolute vérité in every scene. Stem admits that some minor episodes and some dialogue in die original script "came out of my mind.” When Yoko read the script, he says, she suggested changes that made many of die scenes more authentic.
The three-hour docudrama, Stern points out, is "only 144 minutes of screen time,” once commercials and other factors arc accounted for. (A four-hour version may be released on videocassette.) "There were many things I would love to have investigated, but I just didn’t have die time.” In the end, Stem says, he selected what was "good for my story.”•


Imagine’ on video
WHEN JOHN LENNON RECORDED HIS ALBUM Imagine in 1971, he also made a film version, which has rarely been seen in its entirety. Now Sony is releasing Imagine on videocassette; it will be available in the U.S. next March or April.
The sixty-minute program features the ten tracks from die Imagine LP, plus two Yoko Ono songs from her Fly LP and "Power to die People,” by John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band all digitally remastered. Visual accompaniment includes footage of John and Yoko sharing a bath, supporting Oz magazine in a protest march, boating near dieir Tittenhurst Park estate in England and entertaining such worthies as Fred Astaire, Dick Cavett and George Harrison at the St. Regis Hotel, their first home in New York.
