BEATLE'S 'GOSSIPY' DOC ON HOT SEAT

By KENNETH LOVETT

EXCLUSIVE

ALBANY - The Staten Island cancer doctor who treated George Harrison is
under investigation by the state Health Department for publicly talking
about the ex-Beatle's last days, The Post has learned.

The investigation began after Harrison's estate complained that Dr. Gil
Lederman of Staten Island University Hospital violated confidentiality rules
by giving interviews about the late Beatle, sources told The Post.

A frail Harrison - who fiercely guarded his privacy - checked into the
hospital in October.

Lederman offers an innovative treatment called fractionated sterotactic
radiosurgery - which attacks tumors with high doses of pinpoint radiation.

Following Harrison's death Nov. 29, Lederman was quoted in TV and newspaper
interviews as saying the former Beatle did not fear death and was writing
and recording songs until the end.

Lederman had told The Post that after checking out of the hospital, Harrison
stayed at a Staten Island house for two weeks while undergoing outpatient
treatment.

He also recounted how the rock legend, whom he described as "quiet and
dignified," played him some new songs and gave the doctor's 13-year-old son
a personal guitar lesson.

"He believed death was a part of life," Lederman said at the time. "He was
not fearful of death."

Although Lederman seemingly stayed clear of talking about Harrison's
specific medical condition, that may not matter.

Under law, the "revealing of personally identifiable facts, data, or
information obtained in a professional capacity without the prior consent of
the patient . . . is defined as misconduct."

Robert Chapman, a lawyer for the Harrison estate, had no comment on the
probe. The Health Department would not confirm or deny an investigation, but
an official said doctors are bound by confidentiality regulations even after
a patient's death.

If found guilty, Lederman, who's never been sanctioned by the state, could
face anything from censure and reprimand to a license suspension or
revocation. Lederman did not return calls for comment.

Beatle talk may haunt Island MD

Report says George Harrison estate has complained
about interviews given by Dr. Gil Lederman

Wednesday, May 22, 2002

ADVANCE STAFF REPORT

Staten Island University Hospital's Dr. Gil Lederman
may have some explaining to do to the state Health
Department.

According to a report in today's New York Post, the
department is looking into whether Dr. Lederman
violated any confidentiality rules by speaking about
the late Beatle, George Harrison.

The gravely ill musician was Dr. Lederman's patient
before Harrison died Nov. 29.

After the ex-Beatle died, Dr. Lederman told the
Advance, "Everyone was touched by his charm and sense
of humor. He would hold your hand, he would caress
your hand, he would often make a joke or pun. He was
very sharp. If someone said the greenery was nice he
would say 'Yes, and the reddery too'."

Harrison had checked into Staten Island University
hospital in October, presumably to try Dr. Lederman's
fractionated stereotactic radiosurgery in a last-ditch
effort to stop the cancer that was killing him.

At the time, Dr. Lederman declined all media requests
for information, but after the Beatle's death, the
doctor was more open. He told the Advance Harrison's
spirituality helped him embrace what life had in
store. "He had no fear about death. He believed in the
cycle of things -- that day was because of night,
illness because of health and birth because of death,"
Dr. Lederman said. "George was someone who, in many
ways I've known for 35 years. I remember saving money,
saving pennies to buy the old 45s."

Before Harrison left Staten Island he met Dr.
Lederman's children and played the guitar for Dr.
Lederman's 13-year-old son. He played two Israeli
songs, HaTivka and Havah Nigilah and then signed the
guitar -- for what may have been his final autograph.

According to the Post, "the revealing of personally
identifiable facts, data or information obtained in a
professional capacity without the prior consent of the
patient ... is defined as misconduct."

The Post said the Health Department investigation was
prompted by a complaint from the Harrison estate that
Dr. Lederman violated confidentiality by giving
interviews about Harrison, even though no medical
information was divulged.

Dr. Lederman has never been sanctioned before, the
Post noted, saying he could now face "anything from
censure and reprimand to a license suspension or
revocation."

Dr. Lederman was unavailable for comment.

Ну, его не судят. Идет служебное расследование пока. Но поступки его некрасивы с любой точки зрения.

Doctor's wife sued over 'Harrison autograph'

The wife of a cancer doctor accused of forcing dying Beatle George Harrison to autograph a guitar is being sued for allegedly trying to get an autograph from the star on his deathbed.

Dermatologist Josiane Lederman is also accused in legal papers of breaking patient confidentiality by discussing the treatment of an unidentified "famous musician", the New York Post reports.

Her husband Gilbert Lederman settled a different lawsuit last month by destroying a guitar which Harrison's family alleged he forced the dying musician to sign.

The £22 million suit against his wife was filed by a former employee, Dr Lisa Coppa.

She alleges in court papers, lodged in Brooklyn federal court, that Josiane Lederman told "third parties" about a musician's medical treatment.

She also claims she was forced to stop working for Josiane Lederman because of unbearable work conditions.

Josiane Lederman's lawyer, Wayne Roth, said: "She's extremely upset about these numerous baseless allegations that are being made against her."

Gilbert Lederman, a cancer doctor on New York's Staten Island, was previously fined more than £2,500 for making unauthorised statements to the press about Harrison's medical condition.
