Brenda Spencer had a memorable encounter with John Lennon and Yoko Ono on a New York street in February, 1978, she tells Beatles Examiner, and was even able to take a photo of them.
“This is the very first photo I ever took of John and Yoko, Feb 1978, after the very first time I met them,” she wrote. “When I heard about Beatlefest the year before I was only 16 but I wanted to find a way to get to New York and meet John and go to the Fest. Most of my friends were 10 years older than me, so I traveled with friends that had tables at the Fest and ran fan clubs. No, I didn't tell my parents. I did ask my brother to give me a ride to the airport, and after he dropped me off he told my parents where I'd gone.
“I stopped by the Dakota after we arrived and saw little Sean with his nanny. That weekend was later called Blizzardfest because we were snowed in and couldn't leave New York on the day we were supposed to. So we stayed an extra night at the hotel.
“All my friends had gone to the airport to wait for the flight but I made one last trip to the Dakota, I wasn't going to leave for the airport until I absolutely had to. I was waiting outside talking to the doorman when I see John and Yoko headed right towards me! I was in shock. He looked like he did from the White Album 8x10.
“They came towards me and I froze. I couldn't speak, I was in shock. John says 'Hello.' All I could manage was a meek sounding 'hi' (and) nothing more. So he paused and said, 'Goodbye.' Hello, goodbye' as they walked away I snapped this photo, then cried tears of joy.
“And to this day I don't remember how I got to the airport!”
