Driving rain...

Не ошибаетесь. 90% народа, идущего на McCartney (да и на любых других "старичков") дела нет до Driving Rain. Им подавай Yesterday и Let It Be.

McCartney opens tour with Beatles-filled show

By KIM CURTIS -- Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Paul McCartney has nothing left to prove.

He's a Beatle. He's a knight. He's an honorary American. He's been everywhere, done everything. But in Oakland on Monday night, he showed up simply "to rock 'n' roll." And after a 21/2-hour feast for the eyes and ears, McCartney had done his job. He left a sell-out crowd of 15,000 satisfied.

With a non-stop set dominated by Beatles tunes from Can't Buy Me Love and Yesterday to The End and Getting Better, which McCartney claimed had never before been performed in concert, he rocked, he rolled, he paid tribute to John Lennon and George Harrison, but, mostly, he brought the Beatles back to life. And the audience, dominated by gray-haired, 50-somethings who grew up with the Fab Four, loved him for it.

McCartney, who turns 60 in June, hit all the high points of his Beatles, Wings and solo years -- a career that now spans more than four decades.

He's one of the best-selling songwriters and recording artists of all time. McCartney's 1970s band, Wings, scored seven No. 1 albums. In 1999, he was named the Greatest Composer of the Last 1,000 Years in a BBC poll, beating Mozart, Bach and Beethoven.

He's kept an especially high profile recently, showing up at the Academy Awards, the Superbowl and the Concert for New York City.

Monday was the opening night of his Driving USA tour, which will land in 19 cities through May 18.

A parade of costumed characters, from court jesters carrying balloons to contortionists to a man on stilts and a woman walking on a gigantic rolling ball, began the evening's entertainment. They frolicked in the audience and on stage until McCartney appeared in silhouette on a screen holding his famous violin-shaped Hofner bass guitar high in the air.

He was backed by a group of tight, well-rehearsed Los Angeles musicians, several of whom performed on McCartney's latest release, Driving Rain.

McCartney was the consummate entertainer. He strained to hit a few high notes, he messed up some lyrics and his voice sounded a bit hoarse at times, but his energy was infectious.

Women screamed when, after a few songs, McCartney stripped off his charcoal jacket and rolled up the sleeves of his gray shirt.

He sang All My Loving, against a bank of video screens that played black-and-white Beatles footage. He told the story of Blackbird and how it was meant to tell about the Civil Rights-era struggle of a young black girl.

The stripped-down, acoustic set, which McCartney says is the first time he's ever played guitar onstage without accompaniment, also featured We Can Work it Out, Mother Nature's Son, and Carry That Weight, during which he was forced to improvise: "This is the part where I don't remember the words. Maybe I'll remember them by the end of the tour," he sang.

No one seemed to mind. The mistakes made him human, made the crowd love him even more. By the time he got to Hey Jude, it was a full-fledged love-fest, with ear-to-ear grins and waving arms filling the auditorium.

He indulged the crowd with two encores, wrapping things up with Sgt. Pepper and fittingly, The End.

McCartney sings tributes to wife and bandmates

Sir Paul McCartney played tributes to George Harrison, John Lennon and late wife Linda to kick off his US tour. He played Harrison's Something on a ukelele at Oakland Coliseum, San Francisco last night. And for the first time he performed Here Today, the song he wrote after Lennon's murder in New York, which saw the arena erupt with a tearful standing ovation.

Macca also played My Love, which he wrote for Linda when they formed Wings together. He told fans: "George was a great ukelele player and whenever you went to his house, he'd play it at the end of the night. I showed him I could play the song on the ukelele and tonight I'd like to do it now as my tribute."
San Francisco hosted the last paying Beatles concert in 1966, a 30-minute show featuring just 12 songs. Last night's event saw the multi-millionaire musician playing 36 songs - including 21 by The Beatles, and 10 from his Wings days. It included 13 number ones. "When I was picking what songs to play, I imagined myself sitting in the audience and thinking 'Right, what would I want to hear him play?' said Sir Paul. They included Back In The USSR, Can't Buy Me Love, All My Loving, Live And Let Die and Jet. It also included the first live performance of 1967 Beatles track Getting Better, which prompted his fiancee Heather Mills to start dancing in the aisle.

Paul McCartney
April 1, 2002
Oakland Arena
Oakland, CA

(Note: If you are reading this disclaimer, it means that the review below has just been written late in the night and into the morning right after the show, and has not been properly edited for spelling, grammar, and 100% accuracy. It will likely be polished up and also added to in the near future. I mostly just get the basics of a review written right after a show so I can get some of my recollections down before I forget them! I should note that I didn't take down the exact setlist in order while I was at the show, so I'm using the first setlist posted on the internet that I could find that seems to match my memory. So I can't guarantee the setlist is 100% accurate, but I'm pretty sure it is.) Here is the review:
This new Paul McCartney tour is going to be very interesting in many ways. But beyond that, it's just a great show. This was the first Paul McCartney show I've been to. But I've studied up on all of his past tours and have countless videos and audio recordings from his tours, from the 1972 universities tour to the 1993 tour. A setlist can be found at the end of the review, although the review encompasses the entire setlist as well.
I have to admit that while I don't think the new "Driving Rain" album is horrible, I think it's a hit-and-miss album and not one of this best five or ten albums. Similarly, while I did not totally dislike the "Driving Rain" backing band either on the album or on their few live appearanes, they were also hit-and-miss. But this show and the band's performance surprised me very much. Paul's voice sounded much better than at the "Concert for New York", and the band sounded tighter and more rehearsed as well. The backing vocals were much better as well. Paul "Wix" Wickens and Brian Ray add a great deal to this show, and Rusty Anderson and Abe Laboriel, Jr. were much better on this show than they've shown themselves to be in the past.
The opening "pre-show" performance is something that I really just can't explain that well. It was really neat, though. I'll leave the detailed explanations of this to other reviewers. In short, a group of Cirque-du-Soliel-esque actors in full, extravagent costumes, enter the arena through the normal entries found throughout the arena that fans use to get to their seats. The very first one to appear was very near my seat. I almost didn't know it was the beginning of a pre-show performance. You know how it is, some fans just dress really strangely! But I quickly caught on that this was the opening act for the show, partially from having read Paul describe in a bit of detail what he was considering for an opening act in the interview found in the tour program. As more of them appear, the houselights dim and blue spotlights fall on all of them. Then all of those people, as well as others including a group coming into the arena from the floor level brandishing very large balloons, move through the aisles and converge on the stage and do all sorts of various acrobatic and other sorts of stunts and theatrics. The only problem that arose from this was that the opening act performance started while some people were still getting to their seats (which was pretty rude, since it was well past the advertisted start time of 8:00, it had to be at least 8:20 if not later). I'm sure some might have found this bizarre or boring, but I think it worked well. It was much better than any sort of over-blown theatrics that other acts might put on. At the same time, it wasn't too "artsy" that nobody could understand any of it. As all of this is happening, I think some of the "Firemen" music, or music similar to that, is played along. The pre-show performance comes to halt after, I'd say, 15 to 20 minutes or so, just as a lowered video screen is lit up to show Paul behind it in shadow holding up his Hofner bass. The screen rises up, and Paul and band launch into "Hello Goodbye."
